The first time I really noticed the advantage of downsampling a hi-res camera signal was when Rogers broadcasting started to use 4K cameras for ice hockey (downsampled to 1080i for OTA broadcast). The details of the scratches on the ice surface were immediately noticeable compared to the 1080i cameras they were using the previous season. It was night and day. A huge improvement in quality.

  • @michaelbubly

    I've used REDs in both enviroments. On a multi-million dollar feature and on no budget shorts. They work very differently in each setting. If you can afford to kit one out properly and afford the crew that requires, they will smash pretty much anything out of the water. If you're a solo shooter who is going to slap a lens on the front and start shooting, they'll be your Achilles heal. Like the Alexa Mini, this camera is not designed to support solo shooter enviroments. It works alright, but you'll find better work flow in an FS7 II or Ursa Mini Pro. BUT, if you are shooting on a production with a camera team ready to conquer the challenges and with the proper gear and accessories to make this shine you won't regret it. That being said, the Alexa Mini is a massively superior camera in nearly every way imaginable ( other than resolution).

      Sounds about right.
      Better equipment cost more than that nowadays. For larger businesses (edging into movie and digital film area) to buy decent cameras goes into the millions, thats why most productions rent.
      (Heck, even the mobile rigs that field news people use are up there in the price, but have near zero resell value as they are not indoor only, and thats for 1080p only.)
      Though, I would put Linus in more of a medium owner bracket. Once you have over a million subscribers, the ad revenue from that most likely exceeds the small bracket even with overhead. Just my input.

      GuGu is right. If you decide to purchase a camera of this calibre, you need to be sure you'll get the use out of it. Yes, they offer advice for the budget minded consumer but how many people can actually afford 16k gaming desks or their petabyte project. If I have the money, i will get a 8K RED camera to film my little one everyday, so that when they grow up, they won't feel too bad to watch 8k family video on their 16k TV.

      What the hell, no you would not, nor could you.
      The prep before footage with RED cameras alone would be a nightmare and would take hours. That's saying you have a PC that can edit and store RED at all. Also it takes forever to edit RED footage because they are cinema cameras and they record in RAW ungraded footage. Just getting focus on a 8K camera that looks acceptable would take forever. There is a reason these cameras are used on productions.

    Most of the time 8K video capture is not for actually outputting in 8K, but for downsampling to lower resolutions for a much better approximation of pixel coordinates+color value. The more dense the sampling of light hitting the sensor, the more accurate is the representation in the final video regardless of the output resolution.
    In terms of if it's overkill for CZcams. I'd say it's a mega overkill for anything with high video compression, which includes any kind of video streaming online. The bitrate simply isn't high enough.
    The RED cameras are only good for the professional movie and TV series business, where it is possible to deliver the content on UHD Blu-ray.
    The RED cameras aren't geared towards the consumer market, but for highly professional studios filming commercial video content, hence the high price tag.

      ...or you could do it correctly with a 3 chip camera.
      You're mostly correct, except that nobody's buying RED (or any other cinema cameras) to make television, mainly because all those little components are too fragile and troublesome for day-to-day TV production. Also the quality needed for TV just isn't there. Movie production is like a chain made of many weak links, while TV uses fewer, stronger links. Movies spend a year or more on one project, while TV finishes and resets in as little as a day. Take one look at the production schedule of "Linus Tech Tips" and it's clear that they aren't epic filmmakers, as much as egos might believe. It's just the wrong gear for the job.

  • @simongentry
    @simongentry Před 6 lety +229

    here's what 2017 shooters often are NOT taught - a digital camera/cinecamera is like a roll of film (middle ages) based on its iso (asa) - and like film shooters of old - you had to learn to push or pull based on the film's asa and your shooting conditions. native iso today is exactly the same - every camera has a native iso, but experienced shooters will know how and when to push or pull the camera's native iso both to capture the look they want in camera - and knowing what they plan for in post. as cameras evolve, they become more forgiving for those untrained - but at the same time, experienced film makers/photographers will know how to use this new found high-end latitude to their advantage.

    • @thinkingoutloud3757
      @thinkingoutloud3757 Před 6 lety +6

      I basically treat adjusting gain away from native ISO/ASA as the last resort. So I sit at native. Need it darker? Think on ND's. Need it brighter? Work on the lighting. It's basically when these first solutions don't pan out that I think of adjusting the ISO/ASA. It's certainly more practical in a run-and-gun situation.

The lenses they are using on their 8K camera don’t do it justice. Throw some Zeiss cp series lenses on there or if they really want the best go for Zeiss master primes. They think the camera is expensive? Just wait until they decide to buy some cinema glass.

Of course, if I could convince my boss to do the same thing I would be happy to work there every day.

    This video has convinced me that you really don't need that ultra expensive RED camera.
    1. Brandon hobby is not an argument for buying one for a company. Company equipment is for company related work. (or at least it's safer that way)
    2. Turns out that shit is breaking all the time. For $140,000? That's a refund
    3. Most of viewers probably watch it in 1080p on average, consumer grade, 5 year old or older displays, so they wouldn't see a difference between shot from a $30,000 camera and $140,000 camera.
    4. Did i mentioned that it breaks all the time and for that price it shouldn't? That's a refund.
    5. Corridor Digital is filming actions scenes in open field, you are filming most of the time static scenes in a building. Not really an argument for buying one for Linus media group.
    6. Seriously buy something for $30,000 and after 5 years when that stuff might no longer be sufficient buy new $30,000 or $40,000 camera. Still $70,000 ahead.
    7. This is really first world problem
    8. All in all even after all this bitching from me i appreciate that you guys want to deliver best quality shots possible. Hovewer i'd prefer if you were filmming with slightly worse quality from $30k worth camera and for saved $110,000 got rid of cancerous thumbnails. How about that?

      If I was paying that sort of money its because I want equipment that was mission critical and it has to work every time. I agree with you they really should refund and go with something else. Failures happen, but not to that extreme.

    • @EliteRocketBear
      @EliteRocketBear Před 6 lety +14

      They write it off over several years and use it as a way to spike business costs to dodge taxes.
      Not only that, chances are they might be looking toward expanding their business to shooting footage as a freelance gig or service. Sure, you can do the same thing with much much less expensive cameras, but you cannot really make tech videos about those cameras. The RED line of cameras are hot stuff right now, and titles such as "140 000 dollar camera" and "8k resolution" draws the attention from people who wouldn't know anything about RED cameras or top of the line equipment.
      Not only that, if they do indeed allow Brandon to expand a branch of the company for providing filming service with the RED camera, they can use the camera itself as a selling point.
      Besides, in loads of companies the equipment they buy is also used by staff in the downtime. This is nothing different.
      Purchasing this makes lots of sense from a business perspective on multiple fronts.

      You are right with 2 thing in your comment.
      1. I have no idea how video productions works. However i know enough about youtube to know that even $30,000 camera would be an overkill.
      2. You are also right about " Making expensive purchases of the same type of kit every year will hurt your company" Hovewer you missed the part where i said "stuff might no longer be sufficient" If as you say barely anything changes in 5 years on camera market that's another reason not to buy RED camera for youtube videos now.
      I actually do know how to run a company, so you were wrong here.
      I also think you missed the part of the video where they said that it broke so many times, they had so many problems with it that instead they will just write it down. So there goes your better longevity.
      More features? This is i think the third time they are compalining that they have to use RED SSD instead SSD of their choice. Ability to use your own ssd seems like a good feature to me.
      I also doubt they offer better support than than other companies. After some price point the support is mostly the same (very good)
      We all already established that RED is overkill and i will write it again even camera for $30,000 would be also an overkill.
      I will also write again that as a viewer i would rather have slightly worse quality which I and 97% of viewers won't notice (don't quoute me on the numbers) and no clickbait titles and no cancerous thumbnails instead. Something which is very noticable and irritating.
      EDIT: corrected some mistakes

    I feel that resolution is not a true selling point. Why didn't you guys go with Arri? Almost every movie that won rewards for best picture made with Arri. These movies made are in 2.8k! And yes they even showed it at IMAX theaters and the image was holding up very well.
    I once worked with Red and it isn't bad, but I think they have chosen a different path that didn't make sense to me.

    Really glad to see this collab after Corridor's reaction to Linus's first video on the Red. Funny enough, that was the first time I got to see who Linus was and I just though he was a really mad but passionate guy about camera gear. I'm really glad I've gotten to know what LTT is all about and I've gotten to see how happy and enthusiastic Linus is about technology now. I've realized how much I love seeing groups of people so passionate about their work, and how much fun they have in the process!
    Hope Corridor and LTT can collab again in the future!

      the fact that they deleted a portion of their video and didn't post a correction, making it look like they wanted to cover it up, after Linus turned out to be on the money about the SSDs. It was the bigger dude claiming they had no credibility, that's kinda what this was about, they put their cinematographer on to show that they do have the expertise on the tech, just because linus is the presenter, doesn't mean he writes all the scripts.
      I am happy to see they're getting along now though, and seemed to have moved this behind them.
