I'm in Canada... The first time I really noticed the advantage of downsampling a hi-res camera signal was when Rogers broadcasting started to use 4K cameras for ice hockey (downsampled to 1080i for OTA broadcast). The details of the scratches on the ice surface were immediately noticeable compared to the 1080i cameras they were using the previous season. It was night and day. A huge improvement in quality.
I've used REDs in both enviroments. On a multi-million dollar feature and on no budget shorts. They work very differently in each setting. If you can afford to kit one out properly and afford the crew that requires, they will smash pretty much anything out of the water. If you're a solo shooter who is going to slap a lens on the front and start shooting, they'll be your Achilles heal. Like the Alexa Mini, this camera is not designed to support solo shooter enviroments. It works alright, but you'll find better work flow in an FS7 II or Ursa Mini Pro. BUT, if you are shooting on a production with a camera team ready to conquer the challenges and with the proper gear and accessories to make this shine you won't regret it. That being said, the Alexa Mini is a massively superior camera in nearly every way imaginable ( other than resolution).

RED 8K for compressed YT delivery to smart phones. Genius!!
Considering most people have iPhones or cheap android phones these guys paid 50k to deliver 8K content to 720P screens and shitty overstated LED screens
Cicero 219 most flagships have 1080p and up but 90% of android phones are really cheap and equipped with shitty overstated led screens and a lot of people still use old iPhones that have 720p screens

i mean, i get it, sometimes you're outside for a long time, and want to watch some headphones review or whatever, fine, but how can one be ok with watching content on a phone full time when most people have at least a 1080p monitor/TV at home, with decent audio output and stuff
It will still look much better than a footage shot on an average DSLR. Its not only compressing the footage but also downscaling.

The sharpness is 90 due to the lens, not the sensor of the camera.
buys a 150k camera, talks about beeing a small business owner at the end of the video
Sounds about right.
Better equipment cost more than that nowadays. For larger businesses (edging into movie and digital film area) to buy decent cameras goes into the millions, thats why most productions rent.
(Heck, even the mobile rigs that field news people use are up there in the price, but have near zero resell value as they are not indoor only, and thats for 1080p only.)
Though, I would put Linus in more of a medium owner bracket. Once you have over a million subscribers, the ad revenue from that most likely exceeds the small bracket even with overhead. Just my input.
actually it's only 8k
Wait, he's not considered a small business? Shall we just put him into the income bracket of high earners like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, or any other company?
No, because people who can't spell "being" probably have no fucking clue what's even going on right now.
@@JJJJ-uq6gg First off, Hollywood cinematographer do not invest in cameras because each director asks for a different camera based on their film. Because of that, studios or the producers of major films rent all equipment based on what the DP requests. So get your facts straight.
GuGu is right. If you decide to purchase a camera of this calibre, you need to be sure you'll get the use out of it. If the camera isn't being used multiple times a week, throughout the year (while also earning enough to pay for both the camera and operation), you're best hiring a camera for shoots.
And I think the quality upgrade really shows. But just as important as the camera are the lights and the set decorations (and the hand model ;) that add to the lovely frame of each of your videos.

I think people are forgetting that LTT to quite a large extent is an enthusiast channel. Yes, they offer advice for the budget minded consumer but how many people can actually afford 16k gaming desks or their petabyte project. It's for entertainment and our enjoyment...so enjoy looking at a 140k piece of kit and the IQ that it provides.
Dan Chen! Yes! It's amazing that RED have made such an incredible camera so cheap at $50k. The "issues" discussed in this and Linus' review are like LTT got hold of a GP F1 Ferrari and gave it to his mum to review. She hated that it didn't have a cup holder or a makeup mirror with lights.
Even the care. Those mags don't fault if taken care of properly.
Some people use their camers, not just take care of them :) Just as some people use their expensive cars, not just collect and take care of them.
Care to provide proof that LTT don't take care of their equipment properly? And no, Linus dropping stuff isn't a good example, as he isn't in charge of the cameras.
That was clearly Linus's hand in the shot holding (and screwing around with) the SSDs, is anyone surprised that four failed when they let Linus anywhere near them.... ;-) He probably tried to 'SLI' them...
" they offer advice for the budget minded consumer " I laughed so hard on this one. They stopped doing so couple years now.
AMAAAAAAZING!!! :O - Not just the resolution, but what you can do with it, even if you never use the 8k for final video.
$130k camera with rolling shutter. 👍🏼
3 Trees Photography yeah I noticed that too, he was talking about how great it is for motion tracking, but he didn't acknowledge how even very subtle rolling shutter can completely destroy a camera track.
That camera cost more than my house
The camera is $50k. 6 years ago we filmed HBO series Spartacus on a $250k HD Sony Cam. The best Film Cams cost half a million.
It's arguably THE BEST digital cinema camera ever made. The issue isn't how expensive it is but how cheap it is. Unfortunately now it can be afforded by people who don't know how to use an elite camera.
It's like complaining a F1 Ferrari doesn't have cup holders or lights for the make up mirror.
you have a really shitty house then
Interesting story, Ashley - I thought film cameras, from pocket still cameras to top movie ones were on average cheaper than their digital counterparts?
Why is it arguably the best camera ever made? Because its 8K? I prefer Arri's colour science and except for the specialty areas of VFX, stabilisation and re-framing the extra resolution is not detectable even in a cinema. Check out Steve Yedlin's resolution tests at NoFilm School nofilmschool.com/2017/08/yedlin-camera-resolution-myths
I dont know if RED is the best camera. ARRI Alexa is still better and more reliable workhorse IMHO that's why so many Hollywood cinematographers and directors prefer ARRI over RED.

I think the REAL reason is "We have the money".
If I have the money, i will get a 8K RED camera to film my little one everyday, so that when they grow up, they won't feel too bad to watch 8k family video on their 16k TV.
What the hell, no you would not, nor could you.
The prep before footage with RED cameras alone would be a nightmare and would take hours. That's saying you have a PC that can edit and store RED at all. Also it takes forever to edit RED footage because they are cinema cameras and they record in RAW ungraded footage. Just getting focus on a 8K camera that looks acceptable would take forever. There is a reason these cameras are used on productions.
Source(s):
I am a professional photographer and a short film maker
As a vfx artist, i must say that they spend money without seeing much retaliation because raw its not only for grading and color correction theres a lot going on. Its not a profitable camera for a small production company as they mention in the video
sunnyspeed studio they also have the technology. They'll need 128GB ram and double Titan XP to processes and edit the video and process. You can't just record and upload to a computer.

@@9622AvAtAr so your saying they should have just left false information in the video to continue the spread of said false information? I have been looking at running dual or even triple cameras so I can get different shot. However I have seen where a 4k would help post work framing especially since I'm using 1080p videos. I can see where 8k can help in many ways as 4k would for my videos. I would like to see the post production workflow to see if there is anything I can do better when editing. Thanks
The bars are negative space. If you use an ultra wide monitor, when you go into full screen they disappear. I use an ultra wide because I like having the increased peripherals in games is a huge advantage. Unfortunately that means I have black bars on the sides of videos. Not on this one though. I guess they editor of this video just wanted to make a video for their ultra wide fans.
most movies support 21:9. I'd say 98% of them.
# if it were only 16:9, it wouldn't support uploads of 21:9 footage... Don't you think? ;)
# With the new youtube style, you can watch an ultra wide video in the large view mode and it will expand to both sides of your 16:9 screen. That way, you can watch a video not in fullscreen but still have a fullscreen width. So technically, you are getting a larger video in non-fullscreen mode.
21:9 only offers more field of vision in games which calculate their FOV using a vertical measurement. In games where horizontal FOV is limited, you will actually see LESS than someone on a 16:9 monitor.
Clearly since CZcams did not re-render this video in a 16:9 frame CZcams is also 21:9...
Most of the time 8K video capture is not for actually outputting in 8K, but for downsampling to lower resolutions for a much better approximation of pixel coordinates+color value. The more dense the sampling of light hitting the sensor, the more accurate is the representation in the final video regardless of the output resolution.
In terms of if it's overkill for CZcams. I'd say it's a mega overkill for anything with high video compression, which includes any kind of video streaming online. The bitrate simply isn't high enough.
The RED cameras are only good for the professional movie and TV series business, where it is possible to deliver the content on UHD Blu-ray.
The RED cameras aren't geared towards the consumer market, but for highly professional studios filming commercial video content, hence the high price tag.
"Most of the time 8K video capture is not for actually outputting in 8K, but for downsampling to lower resolutions for a much better approximation of pixel coordinates+color value. The more dense the sampling of light hitting the sensor..."
...or you could do it correctly with a 3 chip camera.
You're mostly correct, except that nobody's buying RED (or any other cinema cameras) to make television, mainly because all those little components are too fragile and troublesome for day-to-day TV production. Also the quality needed for TV just isn't there. Movie production is like a chain made of many weak links, while TV uses fewer, stronger links. Movies spend a year or more on one project, while TV finishes and resets in as little as a day. Take one look at the production schedule of "Linus Tech Tips" and it's clear that they aren't epic filmmakers, as much as egos might believe. It's just the wrong gear for the job.
I don't know. You don't really have a solid point to use RED cameras to shoot CZcams videos. Those cameras are torturing the whole media group. It tortures Linus's wallet, it tortures Brandon, and it mostly tortures the editors. But, you know what, you are enthusiasts who like to play with cool gadgets so, keep doing what you love.
here's what 2017 shooters often are NOT taught - a digital camera/cinecamera is like a roll of film (middle ages) based on its iso (asa) - and like film shooters of old - you had to learn to push or pull based on the film's asa and your shooting conditions. native iso today is exactly the same - every camera has a native iso, but experienced shooters will know how and when to push or pull the camera's native iso both to capture the look they want in camera - and knowing what they plan for in post. as cameras evolve, they become more forgiving for those untrained - but at the same time, experienced film makers/photographers will know how to use this new found high-end latitude to their advantage.
I basically treat adjusting gain away from native ISO/ASA as the last resort. So I sit at native. Need it darker? Think on ND's. Need it brighter? Work on the lighting. It's basically when these first solutions don't pan out that I think of adjusting the ISO/ASA. It's certainly more practical in a run-and-gun situation.
How come DSLRs don't have gain controls? Do you know the native ISO of 5D Mark IV? I know with C-log, it's 400, how about without?
Great point! Thank you!
More fitting start to your comment would be 'here's what 2018 English speakers were NOT taught'.

Honest question: Why not use ARRI? Seems like you guys have been suffering from a lot of headaches from this little monster, ultra high res ARRI cameras may not be quite as high-res as the 8k insanity of RED but are typically a lot more reliable and more intuitive to use. ARRIs are a favorite in cinema, guess you just wanted bleeding edge tech?
Arri is the far superior camera in my opinion. Arri has their issue too, but I still prefer the images Arri produces. Even then the best camera in the world is nothing without a good lens. The lenses they are using on their 8K camera don’t do it justice. Throw some Zeiss cp series lenses on there or if they really want the best go for Zeiss master primes. They think the camera is expensive? Just wait until they decide to buy some cinema glass.
Well, it's a matter of workflow i'll say. To me Arri is really the cinematographer's camera, with all the heritage of film stock, and all the analog approach. The ways to expose, set and use the camera is different than Red, as well as for the post-production steps.
Arri is best
Thought my Adblock stopped working for a bit there.........
When the video started I looked for if I clicked on the wrong video or not, then after confirming it's LTT I checked my adblocker if it is turned on. Hmmm
I like how between the "before" and "after" images there's no noticeable difference on my 1080p laptop monitor.
As a pro editor and media manager in the UK, this seems ridiculous. For LTT material that is primarily, consistently lit and locked off anyway. No wonder you guys need a petabyte of storage! You're an overkill channel though, so what the hell.
Ross Martin if you zoom in 4x when editing, you will get a 4K video. This resolution is a godsend for editors who don't have to worry about degraded quality.
gfjfj ufidi - maybe keep your cameraman away from booze when shooting in the first place and you don't need to reframe later and spend a quarter million bucks ?!?
@@gfjfjufidi2880 It's been a while, but no. if you zoom in 2x on an 8k video, you get a 4k image.
I can completely relate to the benefit of shooting in 8k! In my previous occupation as a Motion Graphic Designer/Video Editor we only had the luxury of a Canon 5d which shot at around 1920x1080 at 25fps with only pathetic Imacs to edit on. Whether we were just adding Lumetri colour, motion tracking, adjusting compositions or throwing on visual effects it was a nightmare with footage looking pixilated on decent displays despite our high quality presets in Encoder. I was actually let go for taking too long over videos thanks to shocking timeline scrubbing previews and rendering when clients were pushing endless amendments with cross-timezone deadlines.
Albert Ellison i feel you bro, i feel you. Stay strong
@Linustechtips I wonder if this video was a reaction to Corridor Digital's 'What LinusTechTips got wrong' video? Seems like both parties reached out and realized there was the opportunity to go together on a project to explain more about the Red cameras.

5:28..max.. amazing. .
The real reason they bought RED 8K cameras.
Shantanu Bharvirkar that's not really that impressive unfortunately, I have taken pictures on my Google pixel that look better. Not impressed.
Calico Studios
Yeah let's not lie now
Calico Studios the reason you probably view your photos as better is because the Pixel does not have as shallow of a depth of field as the lens they're using does. This serves a lot of different purposes which you can do your own research on if you're interested. Point is, no, the image from a phone is NOT as good as this one.
Is the video 21:9?
MIND NOVA sure looks like it
MIND NOVA yes
MIND NOVA Yes it is and its beautiful.
Damn right it is!
Yes.
I hate it.
Honestly you could probably shoot that beginning sequence in S-Log on a Sony A7 and come out with absolutely flooring colors and dynamic range.
Can I have it when you're done with it? I'll even drive up and grab it 👍😎
PS: I wouldn't know how to even turn it on.
Nah, you would end up figuring it out. It can't be that hard to turn on a $50,000+ camera. Right? At least you aren't required to pay extra to do so.
@@jay-gb well you need an accessory to even turn it on soo.
Apparently it comes with a power button out of the box (and nothing else).
That's easy it basically only has one button or so 😂😂
What is the name of the song in the start??
That was beautiful to watch on a 1440p ultrawide
Jacob Halfman And I don't care...
Jacob Halfman Same here! I watched on 1440p 16:9 AMOLED and it was beautiful
Yeah , Ultrawide is the best , fuck 16:9 monitors , it's 2017 ffs , ultrawides are the future
Would advise waiting for the pg35vq to drop since prices will probably drop for the for the 34q along with it or shortly after. worst case scenario you wait a little longer and either way it's worth af
Agreed.
In the beginning I was like, did I accidentally press the next thumbnail?
Beachtek! They're run out of my hometown; I did social media work for them as my part time job in high school (seriously)!
0:48 intro in widescreen?
Brandon played Linus, they don't need this and he just wants to shoot his 'outside projects'
such as...?
depression "giving Brandon better toys for best productivity"
Naughtysauce that's why Linus has a company where people love coming in every day and doing their best, and you are a commenter with a bad attitude
@potato Derp the ones he mentions?
@@zedmas9744 Yeah, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars so one of your employees can fool around with projects that give nothing back to the company during his free time is business 101. Of course, if I could convince my boss to do the same thing I would be happy to work there every day.
This video has convinced me that you really don't need that ultra expensive RED camera.
1. Brandon hobby is not an argument for buying one for a company. Company equipment is for company related work. (or at least it's safer that way)
2. Turns out that shit is breaking all the time. For $140,000? That's a refund
3. Most of viewers probably watch it in 1080p on average, consumer grade, 5 year old or older displays, so they wouldn't see a difference between shot from a $30,000 camera and $140,000 camera.
4. Did i mentioned that it breaks all the time and for that price it shouldn't? That's a refund.
5. Corridor Digital is filming actions scenes in open field, you are filming most of the time static scenes in a building. Not really an argument for buying one for Linus media group.
6. Seriously buy something for $30,000 and after 5 years when that stuff might no longer be sufficient buy new $30,000 or $40,000 camera. Still $70,000 ahead.
7. This is really first world problem
8. All in all even after all this bitching from me i appreciate that you guys want to deliver best quality shots possible. Hovewer i'd prefer if you were filmming with slightly worse quality from $30k worth camera and for saved $110,000 got rid of cancerous thumbnails. How about that?
Add3k I
If I was paying that sort of money its because I want equipment that was mission critical and it has to work every time. I agree with you they really should refund and go with something else. Failures happen, but not to that extreme.
They write it off over several years and use it as a way to spike business costs to dodge taxes.
Not only that, chances are they might be looking toward expanding their business to shooting footage as a freelance gig or service. Sure, you can do the same thing with much much less expensive cameras, but you cannot really make tech videos about those cameras. The RED line of cameras are hot stuff right now, and titles such as "140 000 dollar camera" and "8k resolution" draws the attention from people who wouldn't know anything about RED cameras or top of the line equipment.
Not only that, if they do indeed allow Brandon to expand a branch of the company for providing filming service with the RED camera, they can use the camera itself as a selling point.
Besides, in loads of companies the equipment they buy is also used by staff in the downtime. This is nothing different.
Purchasing this makes lots of sense from a business perspective on multiple fronts.
You are right with 2 thing in your comment.
1. I have no idea how video productions works. However i know enough about youtube to know that even $30,000 camera would be an overkill.
2. You are also right about " Making expensive purchases of the same type of kit every year will hurt your company" Hovewer you missed the part where i said "stuff might no longer be sufficient" If as you say barely anything changes in 5 years on camera market that's another reason not to buy RED camera for youtube videos now.
I actually do know how to run a company, so you were wrong here.
I also think you missed the part of the video where they said that it broke so many times, they had so many problems with it that instead they will just write it down. So there goes your better longevity.
More features? This is i think the third time they are compalining that they have to use RED SSD instead SSD of their choice. Ability to use your own ssd seems like a good feature to me.
I also doubt they offer better support than than other companies. After some price point the support is mostly the same (very good)
We all already established that RED is overkill and i will write it again even camera for $30,000 would be also an overkill.
I will also write again that as a viewer i would rather have slightly worse quality which I and 97% of viewers won't notice (don't quoute me on the numbers) and no clickbait titles and no cancerous thumbnails instead. Something which is very noticable and irritating.
EDIT: corrected some mistakes
EDIT2: I was answering to Elusivity
Yeah dodging taxes is problably true reason they bought it. Didn't really want to write than argument on an "open forum"
Me starting the video: What kind of ads this is?
What are they trying to show of?
*A wild Brandon appeared*
Me: Damn, that was the video !? Wow, and the worst was that I already watch it...
The edit at the beginning was AMAZING
Brandon in a video? What kind of sorcery is this?
yall ever just look up at the night sky and think, "Pizza rolls are just mini hotpockets"?
Ben Werli yea
Everyday bro...
Think that the whole world is like happening right now.
Ben Werli every night sis
or that pizzas are just unrolled calzones?
Hi! What’s the song at the very beginning of the video? It’s not the one listed in the bio
I feel that resolution is not a true selling point. Why didn't you guys go with Arri? Almost every movie that won rewards for best picture made with Arri. These movies made are in 2.8k! And yes they even showed it at IMAX theaters and the image was holding up very well.
I once worked with Red and it isn't bad, but I think they have chosen a different path that didn't make sense to me.
No rendered black bars, nice!
This entire comment section "I have never used a red camera and I don't make videos, but I have very strong opinions on why LTT should have bought a different camera that I have never used instead of the red one"
outsider344 I wish I could like this comment more than once. Why are so many people complaining about how LTT spends its money? It's LTT's money, not mine!
Moop Because quality is going down. Have you seen the thumbnails?
LinusMLGTips The thumbnails prove that quality has gone UP, just a screenshot of the video with some text on it was very lazy, this is a step up
Since when did thumbnails reflect the video content? There are some grade A channels that still use stupid red arrows....
It's like buying a Lambo to go from the bedroom to the kitchen.
i keep coming back to this video for the ultra-wide and the amazing shots
Really glad to see this collab after Corridor's reaction to Linus's first video on the Red. Funny enough, that was the first time I got to see who Linus was and I just though he was a really mad but passionate guy about camera gear. I'm really glad I've gotten to know what LTT is all about and I've gotten to see how happy and enthusiastic Linus is about technology now. I've realized how much I love seeing groups of people so passionate about their work, and how much fun they have in the process!
Hope Corridor and LTT can collab again in the future!
the fact that they deleted a portion of their video and didn't post a correction, making it look like they wanted to cover it up, after Linus turned out to be on the money about the SSDs. It was the bigger dude claiming they had no credibility, that's kinda what this was about, they put their cinematographer on to show that they do have the expertise on the tech, just because linus is the presenter, doesn't mean he writes all the scripts.
I am happy to see they're getting along now though, and seemed to have moved this behind them.
