Yeah, even watching it in youtubes 4k compression, the 8k looks softer / 'worse' than the 4k.
Tho I don't believe that anyone actually cares about 'sharpness' in photos/films/videos.
Your device has to also be able to handle as well as the app and your signal and etc
There is no irony here. This video was prefaced with this point. The topic of this video is not about viewing high res footage. It’s about editing it.
This is likely down to the fact that the Blackmagic Ursa 12k shoots the same way for 8k and 4k, just downscaling the 8k readout to a 4k file. On top of that they might not have lenses that are made for resolving pin-sharp details in 8k.

I like your videos and I just want to give you an opinion from a film maker point of view. You left out the most amazing feature of this camera which is it can actually record any resolutions in Raw without cropping into the sensor unlike any other cameras, and still retaining a 1:1 pixel readout. So there is your option for editing in Premiere or anything else other than Davinci Resolve. By the way I edit 6K BRAW even on a macbook air M1 and of course I set up my timeline in 1080, do my edit and only at the end I reset the timeline to 4k or even more if I want and do my export. ( only be aware settings like grain or noise reduction might behave a little differently at different resolutions so might need to recalibrate them) So the Ursa 12k is a beautiful 12k sensor but you are free to shoot in 4k for example and that 4k will have more details than a 4k sensor for sure.

@cheetahluv210 yeah, i was talking about digital video, and if course some crazy shit would run it but you know what I mean, and with film, you can go as dense as you want, pretty much, :)
I love the colour scheme on the "12K" that's written on the camera
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Already happened when you started filming in 8K.
This.

well as BM said when they released it, it was kind of a new test for people doing cinema and they were going to be updating it as info comes in from the industry on what works and what doesn't so at least they gave advanced warning. This would also explain the weirdness around using premiere, as premiere isn't used in the professional space for cinema editing, but more in the prosumer space like FCP.
Although the memory issue was a weird one on PC, I suppose they couldn't impose that on Apple as Apple don't have any hardware it's asking for, but still.
Still compared to when RED release new tech it's not doing too bad, just software updates required, what usb standard is in use on the port do you know, the BMPCC4k had an older slow USB3 gen1 I think.
Always gets me with his sponsor part.

Umm Linus!! Try and remember that most of your viewers don't have a clue what camera settings mean!.. Most of your viewers don't know what camera's are.... And don't know what premiere pro is.... And punching in, and what shutter speed means, or aperture........ And for what the more resolution the better like. having something like 4k or 8k or 12k to punch in to fake multiple camera angles! Most of your viewers have no CLUE what these things mean
anyone who doesn't understand those things is a TRUE PLEB!!!!!
Well he did have 2 sponsors sooooooo...

Interesting stuff it'll Be Great when they fix all the bugs and they should allow other codecs to be used that's not very kool I'm looking forward to see how things develop

HDR: Am I a joke to you?
That's where RAW comes in.
@@Arfaer I kinda want it now given CZcams has supported it since 2016.
@@5urg3x Most "pro" cameras have supported what can be called hdr for 10-15 years or more, that included every blackmagic camera every made of course. Playback is what's new. I've only done one show so far that was specified as HDR output (to be seen on an HDR TV). Output was actually the same as normal, we just needed to add an HDR screening system so it could be checked.
@@5urg3x HDR means above 1 in SRGB 8 bit space. Thats it.
All these cameras shoot a raw format and you can put it in any colour space you like. red, blackmagic (cinema dng) and alexa have been unclamped for ages.
Condor was an HDR broadcast output show, the only difference in the pipeline was a new LUT for the alexa mini they used - and an expensive screening setup.
@@5urg3x The displays are a bit of marketing BS right now. They are highER dynamic range, but really just 10 bit with a wider but obviously not infinite space. HDR files (radiance format, the origin of the term back in the 80s) are 32 bit float, where you can have a pixel at 0.0000001 and the next at 1000000. As of the last few years, higher end tv and film are done in ACES colour spaces, which is a fucking disaster, but is an unclamped "hdr" space and you would deliver that for an "HDR broadcast output" tv show if you were into that sort of thing... but noone is. Before that we worked linear, with no colour space and just viewed in whatever LUT was suppled (mostly alexa log). Before that (90's to early 2000's) it was just random chaos. I dont deal with colour spaces anymore, thank god. i just make it look pretty on my screen and run away. :)

Right, let's totally ignore the price difference, and availability of a 12K sensor. "From a brand new $10k dollar camera", probably because the equivalent 12K camera from Red would be...oh wait...
@@richardhammer187 Doesn't change the fact that a 10k dollar camera should actually have decent software, and not be so bug-ridden it's unusable when you purchase it.
@@jonasgrill1155 it does have decent software... This is a clickbait video. It comes packaged with DaVinci Resolve, and you can get it for free online. BRAW is meant for editing in Resolve and especially for colour correction. Never mentions normal workflow of going between editors. The fact it actually runs fairly smoothly on Resolve.
Linus who bitches about Adobe and is well aware it's crap at updates.
@@michaelodonnell6949 Still though, Blackmagic clearly has an apple bias, cause it runs perfectly fine on a low VRAM, slow m1 APU, but is still laggy on an RTX 3090.
You would hope that your software would perform better using one of the fastest GPUs in the world, rather than an APU that is slightly faster than a GTX 1050ti.
@@jonasgrill1155 As opposed to any other film camera producer? The fact it runs poorly on the RTX 3090, is not a failure of the camera or it's codec it's an issue with Adobe driver integration and broken updates.
Has nothing whatsoever to do with Blackmagic or it's "apple bias".
I already know, I watched his 2017 video, it's for the editors to do some edit-fu so they can do the future magic and actually *enhance*
Would love to see a followup video on this to see if you're still happy with this decision.
