    When i was in training to be an electronics assembler, they gave us examples of ESD damage. They were on surface mount parts. Surface mount parts are extremely tiny, as in you can nearly fit two of them on your pinky nail. We were building the electronic components placed in radar systems. Markedly different from the RAM sticks in your PC.

    This is more or less what I do for a job! Using specialized equipment, I take micro-chips and zap them, most failing under 2kV. I don't really have a computer background nor electrical background so I'm trying to learn what all goes through in the process. Ironically enough, I originally watched Linus's video before starting there and now I've seen yours! I appreciate all you do to show beginners what all the devices around us do, and what we take for granted, very interesting stuff!

    Just watched both videos, and remembered Linus had mentioned the grounds
    are so close together it's hard to hit a data pin. By you guys
    grounding the board to an actual ground wouldn't it be easier for the
    static to actually jump to a ground pin? Would it have been easier to
    destroy the card if you would have grounded a data pin instead?

    • @candle_eatist
      @candle_eatist Před 2 lety +4

      A little late to this but if you ground the data pin, then zap another data pin it could go through the board and kill it. But that would be a bit unrealistic.

    The danger from ESD ist NOT that you actually destroy something. Because, as we have seen, it takes a lot to fully break it.
    The biggest problem is that every discharge can damage structures inside the chips by a little.
    So your RAM will work, but then you get sporadic problems like crashing, etc. it might even be that it will work fine for a year and then due to aging it will produce crashes very sporadically.
    THAT is the real danger, because it's much more difficult to diagnose such a problem. The RAM (or whatever) "works" after all.
    It would have been interesting from an academic point of view to do a full RAM test after each discharge to see if the RAM has degraded.
    But that would be quite a lot of effort and not as much fun for the guys, I assume. :)

    Can static kill your PC?
    The short answer is: Yes. However, it's less likely now than it was 15+ years ago.
    The long answer with anecdotal reference is: Absolutely. Back in the mid-1990s, I worked in tech support for a relatively new PC manufacturer, Micron Electronics, Inc. During the first couple of years, we were seeing an out of box failure (OOBF) rate of 7-9%. We worked diligently to figure out the cause for the failures, going so far as to POST 100%, boot to WINSETUP 35%, fully run test 5% of the units in the order they came out of production. We were still getting the same shipped unit OOBF results and getting 2-3% of our full run tested units back OOBF.
    As a new company, we hadn't anticipated the demand for our product and we were in the process of expanding our facility and adding more warehouse space for the completed and packaged product. In the meantime, we'd been using our wide hallway corridors to store the current warehouse overflow, which regularly made up over 50% of our inventory. What we discovered by tracking every unit's movement in the facility, shipping company used, and system base makeup over 6 months, was that 98% of our OOBF product had been stored in the corridors.
    Employees passed through those corridors and made up 1000s of passes daily creating fairly continuous airflow and, as you know, that's a high static producer. We'd been enclosing the product in regular poly bags, styrofoam impact protection, and cardboard boxes, each one on its own exactly the wrong material. We switched the bags and styrofoam to anti-static materials, started using anti-static pallets and our OOBF rate immediately dropped to

    Around 5:40 Linus mentions how there may be a preference for the discharge to jump to ground pins. If I had to guess I'd say this is plausible for the following reason: the data pins have some amount of residual charge on them that would be greater than the ground line, therefore creating a larger voltage between the ground pin and the source than between it and the data pins. If what linus mentioned was in fact the case, this would be why since the discharge would want to jump to the point of greatest voltage.

    There are 2 types of ESD testing, contact discharge and air discharge. Maybe contact discharge would have more likely killed the RAM? So that means holding a signal line and and then hitting the trigger.
    Usually most ICs have built in ESD protection in the way of diodes which give a reasonable level of protection (but the amount of energy they can absorb is limited).
    The ground signals are spread on the RAM stick mainly for the purpose of signal integrity.
    Also, even if a circuit seems to work, ESD can reduce the reliability and performance depending on the type of circuit.
    So a better way is to do a memtest each time (of course more time consuming).

      that made me think - the actual "dead signal" from the PC should come from a failed board recognition, which wouldn't happen if just one or more physical memory addresses are destroyed by some zaps. The "dead RAM" obviously takes a lot more to be achieved.
      in other words, the "MEEP MEEP" signal of "good RAM" is a simple hardware check that informs the user that the RAM has been installed, and gets recognized. memtest should uncover all other, more subtle problems.

    I've been working on computer hardware since the mid 1980s -- back far enough that you had individual RAM chips in individual sockets, not these DIMMS where most of what you're touching is a ground-plane of some sort. I have *never* burned out a modern RAM stick with ESD -- but back in the day, it was *so* much easier to kill your RAM when they were just a bunch of chips sitting on your desk and you had to push them into dozens of sockets. That's really where this whole "ESD is dangerous" thing comes from. It *is* still dangerous, of course -- just not nearly as much as it used to be. Computer engineers have done an excellent job over the years of protecting our electronics from it.

    • @foogod4237
      @foogod4237 Před rokem +14

      Yeah, I remember back in the day when you actually did have to worry about this sort of thing (and I fried a few different components that way myself), but electronic components have gotten so much more robust than they used to be. I've been telling people for years that the whole "anti-static" thing nowadays is basically just a myth people have held over from the ancient history of computers (y'know, back in the 80s, when dinosaurs roamed the earth), and not something anybody has ever realistically needed to worry about for decades... It's nice to see other people actually pointing this out too.

More punctually its button interface, the radio/clock still works but it doesn't react to the buttons - but if I reset it exactly at midnight it starts at zero! :D ... and I achieved this by dusting off a CRT tv screen and then accidentally going near the clock.
