The proms are easily touchable when live, and energized screws on the sides when you disassemble the outlet and GFCI at the outlet instead of the circuit breaker. The North American outlets are an atrocity. In Brazil, our outlets are recessed, so you can't touch the proms while they are energized, the outlet screws are on the back of the outlet protected by a plastic cover, and hard to touch.

I think the main reason they used AC is that AC produces a moving magnetic field allowing it to be transformed to a much higher voltage and lower current so you can use smaller wires to transmit it, a DC converter to ramp up or down the voltage was more complex especially back then they probably only had rotating transformers and resistors, it was long before transistors

The electricity in your home in Canada is single phase 2 pole, the transformer outside your home on the pole transforms in such a way the two 120v wires are in phase, the only real reason 3 phase is used is really for the physical balancing of the machines producing and using the electricity, the same reason you see windmills have 3 blades, it’s much easier to prevent shaking with 3 torques 120 degrees apart
