Best & Worst Changes in Netflix's Live Action Avatar

- The live action Netflix remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender has recently been released and the internet has some thoughts. because I did really enjoy it, I wanted to be a bit more positive with my video about this show and try to go over everything they changed in this series that I liked and that I think made this show a worthy addition to the franchise while also being fair and including changes I didn't like as well. This video covers episodes 1-4 and will be followed up on by a second part.
Part 2: • Everything Netflix's A...
00:00 - Intro
1:35 - Cut episodes
3:31 - Aang
9:15 - Warriors
15:20 - Omashu
19:17 - Into the Dark - Zábava
Netflix’s 8 episode limit is hurting their shows and you can really see it in this series, the visuals and acting are great but the characters don’t get time to breathe and the writing goes from good to bad to good to bad over and over again. I loved the show, but imagine if it had 2 more episodes to spread the story
i agree with the visuals being good but the acting was far from good. No one is coming after the actors themselves, they just ddint do a great job. Of course the material didnt help but still
acting is great??
i definitely agree! there simply wasn't enough time for what this show wanted to do - like the sokka/yue love story had even *less* time to develop bc the implied timeskip is gone and therefore they knew each other less than they did in og alta and therefore her sacrifice and death didn't hit as hard
also only the first episode was a full hour - every episode after that was only 40mins so imagine if *every* episode had those extra 20mins *plus* we got 2 more on top of that!
they added unnecessary details and omitted required plots !
The Netflix show had more runtime after all.
I have been saying the same thing .. the biggest hindrance to this shoe is it really needed 10 episodes .. there is 100% some writing and dialog issues but this show needed 2 more episodes ... I still enjoyed it and though didn't agree with all the decisions.
The best change in my opinion was Zhaos character. He seemed decently witty and also didn't spell out everything in plain text.
Also great acting
I totally agree. I told my wife mid-series he was my favorite actor. I felt like he breathed new life into the show and they gave him more freedom.
I find that ironic that Percy Jackson and Avatar both had a series that came out in 2024 that was more accurate than both of their 2010 live action movies. Both shows have their flaws but hopefully they will both improve by the time their second seasons come out.
tbh the percy jackson movie was nowhere near as bad as 2010’s TLA, I remember we read the Lightning Thief at school then watched the movie and we thought it was pretty good
I honestly found the percy jackson remake much worse and I actually like ATLA for the most part but I hope they can both make improvements for season 2!!
Big fan of both Percy Jackson and Avatar, and in my opinion the Avatar show was way better than Percy Jackson. I love the Avatar show, the Percy Jackson show in my opinion is very mediocre and feels cheap. The Percy Jackson movies are terrible adaptations, but the first one is a good movie, it has action/adventure/suspense/humor which in essence is what Percy Jackson is about. While the Avatar show has issues, its fun and entertaining, and it actually captures the spirit of the original series. The Percy Jackson show failed to capture the spirit of the books in my opinion. I'd give the Avatar show a A- and the Percy Jackson show a C. I am super excited for the Eragon tv show, that show could be amazing!
Do you think Netflix will change 8 episodes to maybe 12 episodes? Probably not, and that's why there probably won't be a significant improvement.
@@apomalachel8787 They definitely should, that would have been the ideal number for this season. That way Jet could have had his own episode, same with June, Jeong Jeong, and the inventor and his son. But realistically, I hoping for 10 for season 2!
Aang isn’t flying, he’s falling with style.
he flies as soon as he wakes up in the water tribe
@@otaku1abe9That is the air tornado.
@@PikminFan-mt9fq i'm pretty sure aang wasn't able to move like that with an air tornado. and to have enough strength to keep him in the air the wind should be intense for anyone nearby yet everyone was unfazed, unless aang's body weight is truly that of a feather.
@@otaku1abe9 is he though? Aang isn't flying the way Zaheer did in the Legend of Korra. Notice that Aang is constantly moving when he is in the air, it's more like gliding with the support of his air bending ability to sustain his "flight"
😂😂😂 That’s exactly what I said to my kids when we were watching it!
I think one of the biggest changes was showing that Zuko's crew was the regiment that was going to be sacrificed at least in this timeline.
I feel like the Katara actress at some points maybe had too much of a blank expression. Aang always felt full of energy and Sokka felt full of cockiness (Zuko-Rage, Iroh-Grief). I feel like every character really showed why they were casted, but the Katara actress, to me at least, didn’t give that same energy that the other casting choices had
Aang isn't supposed to just have energy. Aang doesn't quite act like a kid sledding on penguins or riding an elephant Koi fish. They very quickly got him involved in the avatar and what it means and he only solved the dilemmas of whether to save the world with friends or without them. He even solved these dilemmas when he was supposed to learn waterbending. Sokka isn't as goofy or sexist and he even likes secret tunnels which is a weird change. Perhaps Katara isn't as motherly as she should be. But towards the end of the series she became more and more like Katara in the last 2 episodes.
Katara had zero personality thanks to to script
Yeah, Katara is my favorite in the show but in this version... Shes just kinda there? I cant even really describe her character well
My faves were definitely Sokka and Aang and Katara is down on the list..
The directing was very poor when it came to Katara, but also the editing seemed off a few times. During some of her dialogue there seems to be this extended pause without much expression before she responds. It's literally 1 second that needed to be cut off to make the dialogue more fluid
The katara actress is more like katara irl. They shoulda let her be herself
If they are waiting to develop aang and katara, WHY INCLUDE Cave of two lovers in season 1!!! Sokka and katara going in legit made me pause and question everything. They ended up spinning it okay ig of brother sister love but wow I was shocked
i really hated that! like clearly all the stuff they pulled from S2 they're going to shorten or skip but in that case DON'T ADD IT TO S1 IF IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO BE THERE
like wong shi tong! or mai and ty lee (love them but imo they cheapen azula here)
In the beginning od that part I heard "Sweet Home Alabama" in the back of my head 😅
Katara's actress is 17. I heard a rumor that the reason Mike and Bryan left is because the live action wants Zutara to be a thing and Aang ends up with Toph instead.
@@igetboredproductions, I must admit, that kinda sounds interesting. Starting to wonder now if they'll actually go through with that idea.
@@CinemaSongscovers cute! I'd actually be down to see that lol ~ like a multiverse where korra never existed then? I wonder who the next avatar would be then?
Idk why everyone hated Azula so much? I think she is in a great place for a starting point to become slowly more unhinged as the show goes on. People need to keep in mind that since she wasn't in season one, they had a clean slate to start her arc. Showing her struggle having to earn her dads favor really sets up her holier than thou complex later on because she believes that she earns it. Yes she is a protégé and naturally gifted but having to see her push a bit to overshadow the first born MALE heir to the thrown was nice to see because in the cartoon it doesn't seem like Ozai would be progressive enough to allow a daughter to step into that spotlight instead of a son ya know? I liked seeing her earn it because talent alone only gets you so far in life.
Where we agree we really agree but where we differ we really differ like I hate how Bumi and Azula are written. They don’t feel like the same characters
I loved the azula change, but not the bumi one
I love Azula tho... both the og(obv, she's iconic) and this version. It shows her growth into the menace she is in Book 2.
I agree, I hate Bumi and Azula’s changes. Just felt very VERY off from the originals. Aang got stuck in a storm, he didn’t run away like in the original so I don’t understand Bumi’s bitterness and why he blames Aang. Azula’s change is not as bad but she use to be the most scariest character but I don’t get the same anxiety as I did in the original. Seeing her flaws takes away the fear I had when I thought she was a “perfect” monster
What they done to Bumi was criminal in my opinion, I really find it hard to see how people like the change in some cases
I didn’t mind azula but I absolutely hated what they did to bumi
Not exactly perfect in terms of pacing and some changes, but it is overall a FAR better live action portrayal of *Avatar: The Last Airbender* than whatever the hell that 2010 film was
There is no movie in Ba Sing Se

It’s hurting a lot of shows with these 8 episode seasons. They luckily had a good episode length to be able to at least incorporate a lot of the main story elements from book one but these streaming services need to give these shows a proper season length or else they’ll never get it right. I still think they did a great job with this show for what they were given. Iroh and Zuko are portrayed beyond expectation.
Cuz of the writer strike, every streaming show will have 8 episodes
Bad batch has more than 8?
I was very impressed with how they managed to incorporate most episodic episode plots into the series tho. Like the combination of jet and the mechanist was great
A major change that you didn’t mention during the episode 1 segment was that Aang never ran away intentionally.
He went off to clear his head and went down in a storm.
Removing Aang’s disgrace and failure is practically removing his character arc from The Storm which I believe is an awful choice.
The Foaming Mouth Guy's absence was a crime
I aint gonna lie doing that shit in live action would be weird and cringey af its one of those things that are fine in animation but not live action
Alot of passion was but into this show, that much is clear but it does stumble a bit. The show should have had 10 episodes in total. Putting Jet and his freedom fighters in Omashu was not a good change imo. They should have gotten their own episode. Aang should have been practicing waterbending along with Katara during their journey to the north pole. Besides that and some minor nitpicks with the acting and pacing. The show gets a solid 8/10 from me. I just hope this stupid mindless hate will not doom any chance of a season 2 and possibly 3.
Oh god I hope not
I find it ironic that Netflix didnt mind North Water tribe's sexists culture but were concerned with Sokas sexism (that 'killed'' the character momentum of suki and soka)
Probably because they didn't want any of their *main* characters to be sexist. Plus, Sokka represents people from our generation while Pakku represents some individuals from the older generation such as Baby Boomers, in which sexism is more common. The writers probably intended to make certain characterizations a little more "realistic", based on what the characters represent. I'm not trying to paint Sokka not being sexist as a good thing for the series. I'm just trying to determine the intention of the writers to change that.
Katara went from struggling to make a bubble to kicking Zukko (been trained since a child) butt with zero progression. Just didn't feel deserved. I think, if I were to have only one gripe with the live action, my biggest issue was the constant exposition dumps. I think the original show did better with showing the ramifications of the genocide, while this show was like, "This is gonna look cool."
Yes, making Katara a Mary Sue was definitely one of my biggest gripe. One of the things that make Katara an interesting character (or really any character) is to see them struggle and overcome those struggles and faults.
@@TheHcjfctc Katara is Mary Sue in the original. Since the end of season one till the very end she didn't lose a single bending fight. She was stronger than Aang in every fight with Zuko and Azula. She kicked their asses while Aang was struggling although he had two or three elements to use. I felt really annoying every time Katara waterbended in the original, because I knew she is going to win
@@user-kv5tr7we4s Waterbending didn’t come easily though and she did end up needing to be trained. I’m ok with her being powerful, but not just from learning from a single scroll.
I think they did train Katara, just didn’t show it. But she kind of self taught herself along the time
@@alexlolli2325 No, she didn’t other than that brief healing lesson. That’s why she pretty much tells Zuko she was her own master.
I can’t tell you how happy I am to see someone who has my opinion of this show, and doesn’t have some twisted hatred that was obviously incubated long before it even came out.
I was excited for the show but had my expectations low, which I think is the perfect storm for really enjoying it.
It's 7/10 for me my only complaint is Azula comes across more like a spoiled child then a legitimate threat, bumi is too cruel, suki is a creepy stalker, and sokka needs a bit more dad jokes & sass.
Yeah I also hate that Zhao gives her all the credit (especially the blades). Making Zhao more like a incompetent puppet.
And of course that SHE conquered Omashu while in the original Bumi immediately surrended so his people's lives and city would be spared from death and destruction and waits till the time is ripe to reclaim.
I think it was better to not include her in this season and let her do whats she does best in book 2.
yeah bumi doesn't look like he was part of the white lotus
iroh looks tense (never a calm moment)
@@sjoerdderks4731 There's still a chance that bumi did surrender just like in the original show. I agree Azula should have been in season 2 she stole too much screen time from katara.
@@erklid2882 Unless the white lotus has become a grouchy club of senior citizens that all wear white diapers.
okay i think the changes to katara could've worked if the writers took it farther than they did
here me out! katara watched her mother get burnt alive in front of her and it's implied that she feels it was her fault bc it was *her* waterbending that tipped off the firebender causing the need for her mother to cover for and protect her
imo that's a great change! and it makes sense in terms of what it did to *sokka* - him going from sexist idiot to massively overprotective brother who doesn't want his sister waterbending bc the last time it got their mom killed and he *wasn't there* to help
i think looking at katara's trauma this way is actually super interesting and i wish they dove more into it than just 1 conversation with jet and her being scared to waterbend (even if it's a decent parallel to aang it still wasn't strong enough)
i think it makes sense that *sokka* would be afraid of her waterbending but *katara* would use that guilt and fear to push herself too hard to becoming a master (like in og atla) and this is where a lot the siblings' clashing could come from
then you rework the secret tunnel stuff and katara and sokka's conversation becomes stronger because they acknowledge what the loss of their mom did their relationship and katara gets the depth, strength, anger, and fierceness she's desperately lacking
also gran gran hiding the scroll from katara i think should've sparked a lot of hurt and anger - she had a way to learn, a way to protect her village and her family and her grandmother *kept it from her* for years! i think it would've brought something to katara's character if this was the first time we saw her get really angry (and if they handled it correctly - as someone very close to her own grandma being angry at her is complicated to navigate) and have sokka step in trying to be understanding while also saying the wrong thing and it pulls them further apart until the omashu episodes where they work it out with that talk in the cave
Your breakdown is perfect. I’ve never seen anyone dive into the potential here with them. ItThank you. ❤ it had so much potential
I agree with your comment about haters being disingenuous with their reviews. Those people are of the opinion that if it isn’t a shot for shot remake then it’s terrible. There is no pleasing such brats. It had some pretty glaring flaws and yet to me it still felt like avatar. I think they will learn and round out the feel and flow of the show much better in season 2. It wasn’t like with Star Wars and halo where they just tossed out the source material. How would you cut down 23 hours of material into 8? Some major plot points have to change or be cut out all together it’s just fact.
The live action had 20 minutes more screen time than book one. You're right in the sense that they didn't need to do it Shot for shot esp since CGI resources needed to be allocated properly. I still think it was an OK show, but I hated the changes with Azula (the development she has in season one should have been her development when she was a kid and how now she's just a secret weapon to be released in the real world. Her manipulation of Ty Lee joining her squad was great. Idk if we'll get that now) I want to see a complete psychopath and her mother somewhat thinking that. Not a scared power hungry girl. I also hated Bumi's character changes, but it was easier to let go with how Aang "calls" back a friend. I can understand the bitterness. I just wish he was more the "mad" genius he's meant to be. Also the exposition is so bad. They should have just made gran gran say the story at the start instead of kyoshi. How many times did we hear what an avatar's role is? How he is reincarnated? (Zuko, Zhao mentions it too) How many times did we have the bad guy tell his plans when it's exactly what happens haha. They just needed to show us. The animated kids show treats its audience smarter than the live action which already has mature scenes. I also hated them including the cave of 2 lovers. I guess they wanted to force fanservice in, and I was happy to hear secret tunnel and leaves from the vine, but not at that cost. Not to change that part of the storyline.
Still a better adaptation than the movie. (Except Princess Yue's wig, or her eyebrows being so dark and unblended with her hair). I just wish we didn't strive to be just better than the movie. But to be at par with the animated series.
The main cast hasnt really captured the fun the animated series has
Idk about you, but I feel like they casted Katara wrong. She doesn’t show much emotion whereas the animation version shows so much. I honestly prefer Katara from 2010 compared to this one.
Looking at some interviews and bts the actress is way more like Katara off screen. Same goes for Gordon as Aang. It feels like the writing and directing just didn't let them be themselves
U blame writing and directing. She looks the part unlike mi is Katara
@@haraldsbaumanis 💯💯💯
Oh, but Idk if we can go straight to blame the directing. It might just be that since it's the first season, the actors weren't comfortable yet - plus they were still getting to know each other. But other than that, I agree. Off set, they're so much like the characters, and have much better chemistry too.
I've seen a lot of admittedly harsh criticism for the show, mainly being "oh it's not like the original" and I get the complaints, but it's pretty dang good compared to any other live-action adaptations released in the recent years (besides Percy Jackson, the Percy Jackson show is good too)
This was a wonderful review! Your dialogue and insight is a breath of fresh air! Your pros and cons have merit due to your great sense of perspective and thought for both🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Agreed!! It’s so great to hear someone not just hate but give a balanced approach.
I watched the new live Avatar and I really liked it, great visuals, effects, action and very decent actors and characterization. I give it 9/10. I compares close enough to the animated series. In live action, it is expected the studio would make some changes.
Completely agree with you!

Yeah, I agree. It seems unfair that a lot of people hate the live-action series; I genuinely like some of the changes, don't get me wrong, the show is not perfect, like you said, there are a lot of changes that seem off, but overall, it's not bad, they still have a lot of room to improve in the next season. I'm still rooting for it.
Great review…I seen so many reviews that bash this series because it wasn’t a direct conversion. There are flaws sure but it is still a good show.
One thing they changed that I really like was Chans character from the northern water tribe it really shows a positive perspective from his predicament and him giving his life in battle giving respect to sokka I think was great
Finally someone gives this show a fair review
Finally!!!!! Someone else who likes this show! It's not as good as the cartoon but it holds its own as a powerful story.
agree.
THANK YOU for this. This show has many flaws, but I feel that its heart is in the right place. It clearly respects its source material while taking some necessary risks that improve the overall adaption. There’s lots of room for improvement, I hope the creators listen to the constructive feedback. Here’s hoping for a great season 2!
PS: Show Zhao >>> Animation Zhao
PS2: Dae-Kim is a PHENOMENAL Ozai.
Some different opinions here than what I’ve been seeing! Good analysis, thanks!
So refreshing to listen to a fair review of the show unlike so many "fans" just blabbering that all the differences from the original makes this show trash
He’s being paid to promote this lmao this was not an honest review
Love this review! Thank you for talking about this show maturely! I agree with nearly all of your points and appreciate that someone could examine the show and its source material without a nostalgia on.
I definitely have nostalgia for Avatar, I'm just not blinded by it
I feel Bumi's part was down played like Zhao, he told Aang that the Fire Nation was coming made it sound big and then you got the Firelord at the end saying the attack on the north was a distraction for Omashu.
How is no one talking about that joke of a scar they gave Zuko?? The lack of willingness to commit to any of defining character things, personality-wise and Look-wise, and rather sanitizing them bothers me so much, my god...
14:40 On point, I was pleasantly surprised that Ozai's characterisation was more nuanced, like they're trying to make him into a tragic villain, a man being cold and heartless because that's what he thinks is expected of him.
It does bring some problems down the road, though
@@Megakiller538I'd like to hear your concerns specifically, because while I can see some problems, there are also ways around them, I mean, if this show drops energy bending in favour of another solution I will have my Vince McMahon reacts cued up.
@@abrahamedelstein4806 In terms of the sequel comics, it shows that SPOILER ALERT: Zuko was banished due to his mother leaving, and Ozai vowing to treat Zuko as if he was adopted. I guess they could change it, but it is just a good reason
idk i like and dislike the change
on the one hand i think it works really well to show more of what the war is doing to other side, a cartoon villian *does not* translate well to live action and i like that it's implied that ozai is also heartbroken and grieving the loss of his wife and nephew just deep down and tucked away where no one can see bc that would be weakness and he can't afford that
on the other hand tho the lack of uncaring cruelty toward his children *especially* zuko will cheapen their arcs/endings down the road
zuko's farewell speech to his father is one of atla's best moments and this more nuanced ozai makes me think we won't get that
@@sosha20 I hear your concern and all I can say we'll see, the scene might benefit from a more sympathetic Ozai depending on how it's done.
I could see it playing out that Ozai taunts Zuko to kill him in his unarmed state but Zuko rejects this on the grounds that he won't live by Ozai's morality anymore, which then prompts Ozai to attack him since he has learned nothing.
To me I don't like the changes that Aang can fly/glide without his staff, it's remove the whole point of why Air nomad lost ability of fly when they started to Befriending sky bison, the whole spiritual point hat the more attachment you have the more freedom you will be restricted on their ability. it is why air nomad use the air glider to fly.
I need these streamjng services to chill out on this 6 and 8 episode limit for shows. Can we get a nirma 12 to 13 epispde run so we can have quality pacing and structure
Honestly I don’t see why people get upset when you don’t like something like this. I like it and I do have things I don’t like but I’m not going to get upset that people don’t like it or hate it.
This literally people should take this as its own thing but also add sum more contexts and layers to make it better that what u think this series should improve going into season 2
It’s literally avatar the last airbender the live action it isn’t its own thing they are bringing something people already like and putting it in a new format. You should be able to want similarities
0:17 i’ve always wanted to get it’s animated movies like a lot of shonen anime. And I’m excited that we’re finally getting it
Why does momo scream like a chimpanze in the netflix adaptation? HE is supposed to be a winged LEMUR.
Finaly not crybaby video on youtube
This valid video that actually rating this series with perspective of adult
im simping for suki, put me in a choke hold
The Netflix adaptation is good. I liked special effects the most. But I didn’t like that in some episodes they merged story and made it unclear and unfinished (episode with face stilling spirit and forest spirit). Katara did not have the personality of Katara of the cartoon and with always blank face expression. Yue was terrible, not Yue at all. I liked Aang and Iroh. Iroh was perfect.
Why did Netflix hire the Ember Island Players to write, direct and act in the live action Avatar The Last Airbender series ? It makes zero sense because everyone hated that episode in universe except Sokka.
I know these Netflix writers will just make Katara and Zuko end up together but it will be such a hack job in the writing department that I don't think anyone will enjoy or like it
Ironically, this version got rid of every single one of the plot points i HATED from the og show. So for that reason alone, i am okay with it. is the og better? yes. But i think as it's own show (ignoring it's a remake) it is still pretty decent if not good. it's better than some of the other garbage netflix has put out in recent years. plus i can appreciate how they tried to make it as visually accurate as possible.
I have a bad feeling they're going to over correct Katara in Season 2.
I think the over correction could be good though. The actress trying super hard to show emotion might be the perfect amount for us viewers. Because all the emotion she showed in season 1 was nothing lol.
Yes, of course it's not EXACTLY like the original because it's not 100 episodes... but I enjoy recreations you can tell had real passion and effort in it's making. The visuals and pretty people alone make it a good watch.
I loved what they did with Kyoshi and the Kyoshi warriors. The warriors were kind of a buzz kill in the original series. They always got defeated so easily, but the live action did them more justice.
When will you upload part 2 of the video?
I absolutely love this adaptation some changes I don't really care for the biggest is I really wish aang would have attempted water bending once or twice but this characters are nailed in my opinion the is great the special effects are incredible Fantastic video 😊❤
1. Aang didn’t waterbend
2. Azula wasn’t scary whatsoever.
3. Katara was so flat
4. Ozai carried the show was more than he should have 😂 he was one of the best actors tbh
5. Putting Katara and Sokka into the spirit world was awful, same with the secret tunnel
Wow I didn’t know you were into Avatar.
Yea this show is amazing especially if you stop thinking about the cartoon every single second. The changes mostly fit the show. Sokka grew on me aswell
agree.
Thank you for this video. I don’t think I disagreed with you at all. After your second video. Would it be possible to get a video of what you would do for the second season?
I've been called a hater multiple times for pointing out that this show has flaws and having genuine criticisms for the show. Wanting to see a product you love want to grow and be better for the future seasons isn't hating. The show was good, at most parts.
Sokka’s sexism and the sexism in the fit the time as a whole should have stayed which would have made katara…proving haters wrong makes her bending development more powerful and faster along with AAng’s and the other characters that gave her empathy and encouragement equaling balance which is what the show is about.
I didn’t mind the M. Night Shamalan film
Seriously?
He tried, which I can respect.
i like the costumes and the setting of the movie..
So, I saw it before I saw the show and I enjoyed it. It’s actually what got me to watch the show. I have to separate it as its own thing and not an adaption in order to enjoy it now, though.
2010 adaptation was not bad at all. It wasn’t very similar to cartoon but still good. I liked it. It’s like slightly different version of the story which deserves to exist.
How can we know this version will have 3 seasons like the animated one? Maybe Netflix will stretch it for 5 or 6 (which neither fans nor Netflix would complain about).
Yes, the climax of this season is the same as the end of Book One, so one might think it will be a season-to-season adaptation, but that might be because it's a climatic battle, fit for a first season ending.
I am in your corner, I think the show is solid. The original show is the best, but this version does good job at getting to basic ideas across, while.make enough changes that it new.
I always give first seasons a 'first season pass' for some of the flaws. This is because you aren't always going to get it right the first time. You are just finding your feet and finding out what works, what doesn't etc. After that, I remove that pass because you should have listened and learned about what to do. That's largely what I'm doing here. Avatar is no One Piece, but it is close. The people making it just need to take notes from the fans and adjust.
Not perfect but it's a solid 8.
These people who are complaining about the loss of a romance between a 11/12 year old and a 14 year old is not a huge loss to me. I am glad they focused more on sibling bonds. Ozai and Iroh and Sokka and Katara
I agree with pretty much everything you said!
"Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished."
I noticed that it was actually Gran Gran who said that in this adaptation. In a way, I kinda with that they'd have said the rest of it, but at the same time it makes sense they didn't because in the original show, it was Katara saying it in the intro and it was she and her brother who found the new Avatar.
So if Gran Gran had said the rest of it, it wouldn't have made sense.
Though, I can now think of a way it could've been worded to where it would've worked, but hey, I didn't write the script.
Wow am i the only one who didnt like how Bumi was introduced or is it just me
The lettuce leaf joke being butchered was by far the worst bit of the series.
12:09 When I saw that part, I was kinda worried they'd killed Momo off too.
Until I heard, "he's alive. Barely."
Kinda reminded me of Arcee's line in Transformers Prime after Bumblebee and Raph are blasted by Megatron. "Raph! He's breathing, barely."
I have been a fan of the Avatar Series for years and I just recently rewatched the Animated version prior to watching the Live Action Remake. Here is my opinion:
Pros:
1. The Action Scenes are visually well done;
2. There is more Backstory given to Gen Iro and Prince Zuko; and
3. The Casting for the Primary Characters seems to be well done, especially for Gen Iro.
Cons:
1. Due to the necessity of combining several of the Animated Episodes storylines into one of the Live Action Episodes the story lines seem convoluted and to fans of the Animated Series this will be very obvious and in some cases insulting; and
2. The Casting of several of the secondary characters in particular Princess Azula and her two friend, Mia and Ty Lee. I found the Live action Azula not to be as intimidating as her animated counter-part and the physical resemblance especially for the characters of Mai and Ty Lee was not there. The Animated Mia is tall and thin, Ty Lee is lean and athletic while both live action actresses were short and dumpy. The physical appearance of the characters lends support to their personalities and storylines. This is not there in the Live Action Version.
Overall the Live action version is not Bad, however if you are fan of the Animated version the glaring mistakes and convoluted storylines far over shadow any of the special effects and diminish the Live action version.
Those people who have never seen the Animated Version will find this series enjoyable, however I would suggest that they watch the original, which of course is far superior.
Granted it's been a WHILE since I've seen the cartoon but I think I remember it pretty well. I watched this series all together this weekend and I liked it. Yes, of course, they changed some things, but overall I don't mind some of them. I like Aang having the journey and a path instead of wondering in the original. I agree Katara is very mellow compared to her animated version but she's a traumatized teenage in the start. We see OUR Katara in the finale when she fights and gets all the adults to listen. I am still not sure about the Zuko actor but Iroh is PRICELESS!!! The visuals are beautiful and I really like it so far.
One of the big problems that I haven't heard anyone talk about yet (and I'm only 2 minutes into this video, so maybe it will come up still) is that they removed all moral ambiguity from the characters. For instance, Katara doesn't steal the waterbending scroll and justify it by saying it was stolen from her people in the first place. How will that effect things like Katara's confrontation with Yon Rha further down the road? They are going to have to make even more changes as the series progresses because of how they handled season 1.
I’ll give it up for the casting. They looked so much like the original characters that I totally bought them
The adults in the show is the best thing.
Both ozai and iroh, they emote so much with just their expressions.
Zhao is a slimy sleazeball instead of being a thug like the cartoon and the actor is excellent with his portrayal
I don't understand why they choose a young man and covered him in prosthetics to appear old for king bhumi.
The kids I feel aren't given good lines. Yes they are kids but they aren't given much direction. Zuko though is still good
Aaang met Roku during the Summer Solastaces at a Shrine. Winter is water, summer is fire. Fall is fire, which leaves Spring for Earth. That's the cycle Summer, Fire Roku, Fall Air Aang, Winter, Water Korra. We don't have an Earth bender avatar but you can see the pattern.
Four seasons four love.
Kyoshi was from Earth Kingdom
@@paulc7162 right. I had a long week. I was thinking Earth Bender after Korra. I forgot Kyoshi was the one before Roku.
I also forgot Roku asked Aang to get to get to his shrine at the summer solace. So it had 2 requirements.
got some good news for you there making a new avatar cartoon series set I believe a hundred years after Korra from what's been floating around aka there's going to be a earth bender avatar
Sum up the show:
"The flying bison whistle was done better"
Lol
New viewer here, love the video!
14:10 Agree! Really good casting choice there!
18:21 Yes she did, She appeared in the last scene of the season finale lol
Why is every comet section about the Netflix's live action ATLA have people assuming someone was paid to give a good review of the series or bashing people's opinions. seriously, It is okay for people to have different opinions. Opinions are not fact. If you like the show, watch it. if you hate the show, don't watch it. We should be respectful of other peoples opinions, instead of bashing them for have different opinions.
I’m going to avoid any judgment until the last season of the show once all three seasons are finished I think then, and only then is a fair to judge the show, because we see how the characters fully grow, and fully change, and fully adapt to the narrative anchors placed as the story goes on.
I found the casting of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender was perfectly done, especially Sakka whose facial expressions look so much like the animated version it is spooky.
Airbenders gave up the "Ability to fly" upon finding care and companionship with the flying Bison. That's probably why people were upset.
I’m honestly not a fan that they did secret tunnel way too early in that situation but that’s just my opinion but i say it was still solid
Secret Tunnel introduces badger moles, explains Omashu, continues romantic tension between Aang and Katara (mercifully removed in full), and has fan-beloved song. It wasn't too early because it's not that pivotal
This is such a great show, i am loving it !
It was okay for the most part but it felt very very rushed.
It's fine comparing the versions but people need to remember it's a different take on the story and to just enjoy
I’ll give it a 4/10, it’s for sure not good, not even average, but some cool/good parts so it gets just below average. Not even comparing it to the original bc I hadn’t watched that since it first came out, but just in general as a film. Like when I was watching it I fr was questioning if it was bad or the original just isn’t as good as I remember. But ofc I went and watched the original right after and realized I had forgotten how amazing it actually is, and this remake is just that bad. The writing is off, the quality of the actual filming was bad (some parts were good but others were horrible). The story telling was also very meh, so basically the whole thing is just meh if I could describe it in one word. I’m not the type of person to be like “yeah it was mostly bad but there were some good parts so it’s okay” which it seems a lot of ppl are saying. I feel like some ppl want it to be good so bad that they let it twist their opinion. But if we’re gonna be honest and unbiased it’s just bad. I also think the problem is pretty much everything that comes out theses days are bad, so that’s where the opinion of “some parts were good/cool but also had a lot of bad parts, but that’s okay” comes from. Were so used to mediocre films that we settle for inadequacy. My first thought when watching this shouldn’t be “was the original this bad” which just shows an unbiased opinion from someone that barely remembers the original show and was excited for the live action. Like I didn’t even know all the drama with the OG writers and didn’t even know about that movie, so I really had no negative connotations going into it.
I didn’t expect it to be as good as the anime show, but I still enjoyed it very much, there was some scenes where the cgi was amazing
I really didn't know how to feel about this adaptation. there were a lot of things that I liked. I like how they portrayed Uncle Iroh and Zuko. but there's a lot of things that I didn't like like Katara and Azula. and then some weird changes like Katara and Sokka going into the cave of lovers. how's the den like how Katara became a master without any formal training just by reading a scroll. overall I don't think it was that good. but there is hope. if there's a season 2 they can still save it.
I think it would be a really nice touch if in the live action season 3 they have Zuko talk about his findings on the avatar with Aang
I didn’t mind the prequel in the first episode, my issue was that they jammed it and what we originally 3 other episodes all into a single episode which made everything way too rushed and him discovering the massacre at the air temple wasn’t given the emotional weight it needed
0:57 and the same could be said for Cowboy bebop😢
I like your take: the cartoon did some stories better, this show does other stories better
The cave of two sibilings compared to lovers
4:27 what about the 2010 one
Firelord doesn't look menace enough
What?! I think he looks spot on.
@@pinkribbons12yea of course did 🤦🏿♂️
You are about 30/70 on this. The 30% is your good takes BTW.
I think they need 10-12 eps because it feels like there’s not enough time
4:48 still good
