  • There are a LOT of quickly growing 80s and 90s classics, several of them from the House of Toyota themselves. The MKIII and MKIV Toyota Supras with their legendary 1JZ and 2JZ power plants, the big body ultra exclusive Century, and of course the Celica. Arranged the proper way for a sports car with the engine in the front, a manual transmission in the middle, and the power going to the pavement through the rear tires. In this case we have the cream of the crop, a 1985 Toyota Celica GTS that's had 1 owner its entire life.
Unfortunately even the legendary 22RE Toyota motor can suffer from failures and this poor car suffered an injury a bit over a year ago that sidelined it forcing an engine rebuild. We quickly got into the situation of fixing just what HAD to be done versus doing everything we COULD get done and doing a complete rebuild. So after hunting down the parts necessary our friends at M&M Head Service in Delware Ohio rebuilt the entire long block for us and handed it back for installation. So, we, meaning Rich, got to work!
These little cars are awesome 80s classics, from the period correct styling to the fuel injected feature of the Toyota 22RE versus the previous 22R, to the sporty stance. It's not packing the grunt over a 7M-GTE or 2JZ-GTE from the bigger badder younger cousins but it's still a very capable little sports car. In this video, we go through the process of reinstalling this capable little 4 cylinder and get it a big step closer to purring to life again.

We've had opportunities to work on a LOT of cool classics but more and more these 80s Japanese sports cars are finally getting some love and attention. More than happy to get this thing living and breathing, ready to make the original owner proud!

They are great cars and really deserve their legendary dependability reputation, unfortunately this one suffered for a quick and damaging overheat which forced the rebuild. But, back together and better than ever :)

Super SUPER cool car and a 1 owner so realllly rare to find. It's in extremely good shape, unfortunately suffered from an overheating and had to go see the Doc.

518.000km on my hilux when i sold it about 4 years back. Body went rusty but motor fine. Still see it driving around. Used to pop a head gasket about every 100.000 but went to a steel shim style and studs and no problem again.

@@watsisbuttndo829 they really are crazy bulletproof motors, and very very simple. Unfortunately this one suffered a catastrophic overheating and needed some bigger than normal attention. But, should be fired back up soon and ready to cruise another few decades :)
The Hilux is such a legendary truck, with a VERY well deserved reputation!

@@watsisbuttndo829 I have no idea how many miles or hours were on mine, it was actually a 1979 Celica (I believe GT). Sold it for some silly reason but no problems at all, It never used oil and always ran great, just ran and ran. Legendary engine for sure and the car was fantastic.

We have floor drains for a reason :) Also less chance of damaging paint and plastics that are old and cold
