- In this video I show you how to replace the T.C.M. in your Nissan. The transmission cooler/ Radiator had failed in this PathFinder mixing antifreeze with the transmission fluid.(s.m.o.d.) The dealer said that its not covered under a recall, and the entire transmission must be replaced for around $5000. We shall see if this transmission can be saved. If you find this video helpful, subscribe. I put out a repair video every week. Thanks for watching.

I just dropped my 06 pathfinder at the repair shop 2 days ago. I wish I've seen this video before dropping it. But at that time I wasn't sure if it was the tcm problem until now that the mechanic told me today. Since I've heard the the tcm needs to be programmed I did not want to deal with it too much so I left it at the shop. But this video is definitely the best video for tcm replacement. Wow. Good job bro
Excellent video, i had the dreaded wont crank and cross contamination issue on my 2008 pathfinder with 181k miles. I replaced the radiator, bypassed the transmission cooler lines to the new radiator. Now I dropped the valve body out and saw I have a Hitachi TCM. This seems to be a little better designed compared to the Bosch. I found black marks between two of the lines in the TCM which I assume are 12 and gnd. I cleaned out the short material and put gasket sealer in the area to isolate for future issues. I am about to re-install and see if it all worked. Hope the fuse does not blow again. Thanks for your video with great detail.
Thanks. I tried cleaning out and sealing up the tcm f on this one as well and it worked for a week.
@@GrimRepair unfortunately my fuse is still burning out. I took the valve body out again and am looking for another place that could have shorted out. I may just have to order a new tcm board, but not sure if that is the issue now?

Thank you for the video! My 2008 Xterra had water in the transmission. I did the radiator bypass and flushed the system. It ran good for awhile but now it went into limp mode and is blowing the tcu fuse. I think I may need to try this before I decide to let it go.

Great video! The idea of working on an auto trans makes me nervous af. My frontier threw a check engine light for the overdrive shift solenoid and I'm already starting to sweat
Thanks, it's not as scary as you probably think it is.
Best video I’ve seen those far. I have an 07 Pathfinder with probably the same issue. Mine won’t switch out of 2nd gear and I only could go 30 mph
you're in transmission limp mode. a fail safe, best luck for your repair.
I am have 2001 maxima with 213k miles transmission is having issues. Believe its the
Solenoids. if its the torque converter, the transmission is not worth fixing
Yes I scanned it and that’s exactly what pulled up brake solenoid
This is the best video capture of a mechanical job I have seen. The detail and especially the photos were excellent. But it needs to be higher in the CZcams tag list when I searched for Re5
r05a. Would have save me a good bit of time yesterday... But my issue is more convoluted since the boy that removed the valve body, removed most every bolt and we had to make a few guesses as to where they went. But your run through was great. I may have to take it back out as the turbo sensor had overheated and burnt/crusted on top and sent it to Limp mode with no reverse. Testing of the TCM seems to show no problems. So I have to install it to test it.
Thank you, happy to help. Unfortunately I can only do so much about how youtube ranks my videos. If you could give it a like that might help. Thanks for watching.
@Jay Seth I thought I mentioned that in the video but, it was $600 and about 1.5 hour after diagnosing the problem.
@Jay Seth is this a question? What do you mean?
@Jay Seth I did not have to do any programing. It worked right out of the box. The instructions in the box did say I would need to program it, but it worked fine I may have gotten lucky. Control modules can be reprogrammed they do it often at the dealer.
@Jay Seth I did NOT buy a new transmission the old tcm was in limp home mode and would only work In 2nd. I bought a new tcm problem solved.
Great video man really appreciate the label of the bolts that's what I was really worried about not putting the both back in the right place

Hello.. video was on point with my 06 Xterra. My question is.. does the solenoids gotta be the same exact ones or can be replace with any other one that looks like it? See only see the solenoids in order to put in place but not the numbers on them are the same?
@@dne2007 there are 3 different types of solinoids on the tcm. As long as the correct type is in the correct bore, you'll be ok.
@@GrimRepair ty guess ill have to replace the tcm since I didn't do a good job cleaning the burnt spot and it does have continuity in all places.
5-Stars! ★★★★★
So I have a 2009 xterra with a p1774 code I was wondering if it could also be the tcm since it got contaminated with coolant
Yes, it could be.
Excellent video , I will be trying this tonight. I have a p1757 error code and I am stuck in 4th gear. I suspect it’s the TCM connector to the front brake solenoid has snapped so I might be able to solder it back up. If not snapped then I will replace the solenoid itself

No CHECK ENGINE light ..but luck of power moving ...especially uphill...reverse ok ..when on the run gearbox shifts gears ok.
Faulty TCM unit ?
Car has 114k milles on the clock ...and i dont want scrap it just because of that .
Well detailed Video ...Great job 👍
It could be, did you check your fluids and make sure the coolant isn't mixing with the transmission fluid?
@GrimRepair I will check this 2moro
It's 20:20 and raining like he'll
What colour should I avoid to discover ??
And if mixed what does it mean?
Well...hopfully I'm not going to find any milkshake 2moro
If so i do hope new radiator + flashing both coolant and transmission liquid would fix my pathfinder, at least for another 50k milles.
@tomaszkus3652 it means your transmission cooler inside the radiator has failed and is killing your transmission. If it is the original radiator and hasn't failed. you should replace the radiator anyway, because it will go bad and ruin your tcm, nissan may replace your radiator for you under a recall. Your transmission fluid should be red and oily, not frothy, watery, or sticky. Your antifreeze should look like antifreeze. There are many different colors it could be, hard to say who may have put in what over the years. If you aren't familiar with how uncontaminated antifreeze should look, you may want to have someone who is look at it.
@tomaszkus3652 it may not look like a strawberry milkshake. Mine wasn't that bad. When I first looked at it, I just thought that it looked wierd.
Hey man amazing video THANK U SO MUCH!! I have a 07 frontier I'm pretty sure it's the TCM. When yours went out what did it do was it a no crank no start when you turn the key over?
It was a crank no start. I had a communication error code and was unable to pull tcm codes the tcm fuse would blow every time I tried to start it. I had coolant contamination from a few weeks before, I had replaced the radiator and flushed the tranny, but I must not have gotten all the coolant out. The coolant causes the tcm to short out and blow the fuse.
Although your sound system needs improvement, this is a really good video. Great job man!
Thanks!
Would I have to re program if I’m just replacing the input clutch solenoid??
No
Is there any difference in transmission control module in the xterra and the pathfinder with the same motor?
I don't think so, it may need to be programed though.
I have a question. Is it okay to replace more then one solenoid. Since I have the valve body out? Your Pathfinder has the same valve body as my 2004 Infiniti FX35 AWD.
Yes it's also cheaper to buy all of them as a set.
Perfect!
Did you get the P0717 code, mine is the same I just replaced the radiator and flushed the coolant and trans but the code just came back
It's been a while, I don't remember. A bad tcm can give you that code, though.
Great tutorial! I have a 2011 frontier (which shouldn't have the coolant contamination problem) which I believe uses the same part. The transmission was slipping badly and it was kicking out a code related to the tcm, P1774. For some reason the shop I took it to recommended that I replace the transmission rather than just the tcm because it requires taking apart the transmission and can be "risky?" Watching you do it, I can see that's clearly not the case and that the valve body comes off super easy from the transmission. My question I guess is whether there's a risk or downside to replacing just the computer, and whether I should instead replace the whole valve body, with a new tcm, considering the whole body is not super expensive and it's possible there is some other bad contact in the valve body that is causing my problem. (Sorry, not super mechanically inclined so I hope this makes sense) Thanks again for the video!
Thanks. There is risk in everything, if you have chunks of metal in your transmission pan I would be worried that what ever is causing that might contaminate the new valve body. Some super fine flakes are normal. If everything looks normal I would just change the tcm. Hard to say anything for sure without seeing the car. I can see a lot of shops not wanting to just change a tcm because if anything goes wrong in the future with your (probably high milage) transmission it would be easy to blame them. They want your car fixed and not coming back in for warrenty work.
Hey there - I have 08 pathfinder rwd, I changed the radiator when I got the truck prior to issues after reading about it. The transmission works fine going forward, shifts up and down no issues, the problem is now that the reverse doesn't engage unless I shift back and forth between park and neutral. There is no slippage in the transmission, it pulls strong but simply stopped engaging reverse consistently, is this a shift solenoid issue? Thanks
It's possible.
I have a 07 pathfinder my battery died and replaced it with a new one after that the transmission started acting up. Local machanic told me it had code p0744 tcc solenoid valve function fault. Any ideas? Thanks
Could be the tcc solinoid, wiring issue or the tcm. My over the Internet guess is the tcm.
Hey bro
Did the tcm ever needed programming or did everything work out
I’m in a similar situation where I need to change my tcm.
I didn't other have said they needed to program theirs.
Thanks man! This is the best video on this out there. My Xterra only has a p0717 code. Do I need to replace the whole valve body or just the TCM like you did?
Thanks, I would just do the tcm.
@@GrimRepair Gotcha. Appreciate it
I hav a question, on the solenoid replacement, are they all the same or, are they all different, according to the numbers underneath each one?
There are 3 different ones on the tcm each type has to go in the correct bore. I am not sure what you mean by numbers underneath them?
I know it's three different solenoids 1oddball 3 of one solenoid and 3 of another. Does it matter which go where as long as it's the correct solenoid type? Surprisingly no smod just hard shifts from park-reverse and hanging/not wanting to shift to second unless walking the gears by letting off the accelerator at just the right moment
Seeing this video four years after it was done, I have a question for you, once I pull out the valve body, will transmission fluid comes down as well?
Yes
Hey i fully replaced my whole tcm with the valve body and now when i wanted to turn it on it said it was on 3rd and not on park, but it clearly shows on my shifter that its on P. Any help? Truck doesn't want to turn on cause of that and moving the shifter up and down doesn't change anything
Make sure the shift linkage is lined up on the valve body.
Bravo TOP ******
Did the replacement time come pre programed? Is there a link to where you bought it? Did you have to program it? Thank you so much
I thought all of that was answered in the video. There is a link in the description,to the tcm I used. I did not have to program it.
At 8:25 the part that attaches to the green plug from the valve body is called an a/t assembly harness connector. It is attached to the back of the transmission on an '06 2WD and kept in place with a snap ring. Remove the snap ring and the wiring plug on top of the connector. The connector is designed to be pushed in so you can remove the valve body - I needed the hook end of a crowbar and positioned it against the transmission housing while pushing down on the connector to pop it out. The connector has ten pins on each side - make sure they are straight and clean before connecting the green plug from the valve body back to it. (It'll throw a P720 code if one of the pins is flattened down). There's also a metal tab that supports the connector (it may be pushed down on the valve body) - carefully straighten it out and sit the long end of the connector on top of it. Lube the o-ring on the connector before pushing it back into place (may need a screwdriver to help), then secure it with the snap ring. The valve body can be tightened down after that.
I didn't have any luck removing it that way.
Great vídeo i liked it!! I need a tcm for My Nissan Frontier 07 4 cilynder 2.5 how can i get it?
Thanks, your local auto parts store (oriely's, Napa, or Autozone) should have it, you may have to go in and ask about it. If you dont live near one of those a Nissan should also have it.

Next time I'm at the junkyard icon make you a shirt, but I'm pretty sure it just screws into the bumper.
So I ordered the solenoids on Amazon for my valve body, but it doesn’t say which is which and they are all similar. Can you help me. Please?
There are 3 different types. One type has a plastic Top, one type has a plastic Nipple on the top and one type is metal on top correct?
Could it be my valve body if my titan takes off slow and my AT check light is on. Almost feels like something holding the back of my truck from taking off
When there is a problem they go into limp mode and start out in second, and acceleration suffers.

Hello Grim, I'm watching your video from France because I have an automatic transmission problem on my Nissan Pathfinder 2005 2,5l 174cv, in fact the gearbox starts in 2nd gear so it's almost impossible to move forward without making a noise, it's not possible. I move forward in my research and I notice a strange liquid in the coolant reservoir, I also think that the engine radiator is dead and the gearbox oil has mixed with the coolant. So I think it's the TCM that's messing up and not the box. Thank you for your video and if anyone has an idea about my problem, I would be very happy to read your comments.
You need to at a minimum replace your radiator, tcm, and flush out your transmission fluid really well. Hopefully it can be saved. It's starts in 2nd because it's in limp home mode.
thank you for your answer, I hope I can save the transmission. I went to Nissan and he asked me 10 000 euros for change the transmission. That the price of the car completely crazy@@GrimRepair

I have a 2005 crew cab V6. My transmission won’t go into OD and I don’t believe I have low gear. The CEL has been on for sometime but that’s because of an O2 sensor issue. Could the TCM be my problem or is the transmission shot? By the way the vehicle has 267k miles
It could be the tcm. It sounds like it's in limp mode staying in second. Make sure you are using a scanner that can pull transmission codes.
Thanks for the awesome Video Grim. This sounds like the problem I having with 2007 Xterra. I'm ordering the TCM from Street Smart tomorrow. Do I just replace the radiator too or is there a separate radiator/cooler for the transmission?
Thanks, the factory set up incorporates the radiator, and it's prone to failure. If yours has coolant contamination you will have to replace it. If you live in a warm climate you can run an extra external transmission cooler to prevent coolant contamination from ever happening in the future.
@@GrimRepair I got the TCM and radiator switched out but the vehicle still isn’t starting. No codes but the dash is showing the transmission in 1 and not park. I tried the unlock gear shift.
The fuse is good. Any thoughts?
@@armh3 it sounds like your shift linkage isn't hooked up right the car won't start in anything but park and neutral.
Hey man my 06 nissan frontier has been shifting hard into 2nd gear(by hard I mean sort of bumps into 2nd, no clanking or grinding of any kind) and a delayed up shift from 3rd gear to 4th gear and its also delayed when I shift from drive to 3rd when going down hills. I was wondering if this would solve my problem or what your advice would be?
It could, it's hard to say for certain without looking at it. Do you have a scanner that can pull tcm codes?
@@GrimRepair I dont own a scanner unfortunately but I had an engine light come on about a year ago and I ran the code at autozone and it said something along the lines of valve body assembly or something about my tcm solenoid? but I lost the print out of the paper I recieved that had the actual code number, but the light did turn off after I had my transmission fluid flushed. But still shifts a little bit funky but its not a huge problem just would like to prevent any further damage to my transmission if it can be prevented lol.
@@sa.3370 the light dosent always come on for transmission codes scanning it is where I would start.
Question. Did the TCM need programing? I've looked at the Dorman replacement 609-250 and it states "requires no programming after installation". But you state you were going to have to program it... but then eluded it was just an old OBD2 code.
I did not have to program it. It was a stored code.
@@GrimRepair Thanks for the info for if I have to go that route. I pulled the controller and cleaned it and then sealed all the exposed circuits in oil resistant RTV.
I've watched this video a couple times, very helpful. I had the SMOD happen to my 07 Xterra, but got it fixed (very painfully, but fixed). Recently, it's been going into limp mode intermittently and I'm trying to nail down the problem. Do you remember the specific code that was coming up?
Multiple Solenoid codes, I believe the code when it finally failed is in the video.
@@GrimRepair I listened to the video again, you cleared a communication code but it didn't say what the actual code was.
@@Scott_the_Celt u1000 was the communication code, you will need a scanner that can pull tcm codes to read many of them the check engine light may not come on for the transmission.
Well not my problem! I have same vehicle but seems like torque converter or something that controls lock up. Have no codes it shifts and drives great. Problem is at idle got vibration. It seems to rev about 500 rpm more than it should across all gears wont slip no matter what I do in any gear except a few extra rpm. I'm so close to converter but some good info be great. My fluid is also good and i've put 3000 kms with no changes. Standard swap?
vibration at idle, like a bad motor mount?
I have a 2012 Nissan pathfinder, my transmission started doing this weird thing while driving it throws itself into a neutral state or stalls to get into 1st gear, lots of torque converter spinning. Turn the car off/on, drivers normal. Get error codes P0850 Park/Neutral switch input & U0101 Lost Communication with TCM. No one at Nissan can verify where the PNS input is located. Also the pathfinder can be turned on in P, R,N or D... I wondering if it's the whole valve body now? Not sure, but your video has now lead me to a different road.
Do you have antifreeze contamination in your transmission?
Can I just replace the solenoids ?? I have the code coming up for the input clutch solenoid and how would reset it
Reprogram
You can replace just the solinoid, if that's all it needs you won't need to reprogram. It is likely a broken contact inside the tcm though, it's a common problem. I bought a remanufactured tcm and I did not need to reprogram it. If you do need to reprogram, you'll either need an expensive scan tool, or pay the dealer an hours labor.
un favor querdo amigo esa ecu que cambiaste necesitas programarla o no
It was not nessasary for me. Others have said that it was nessasarry. I may have gotten lucky I am not sure. If it needs programming the dealer should do it for an hours labor cost.
Any specific torque specs for replacing the bolts?
8 inch lbs
Why would you put two trans coolers? One wouldn't be enough? Thank you for the video.
From the factory, there is one built into the radiator and an other separate from the radiator. If you add another and don't use the one that is built into the radiator, you eliminate the possibility of coolant contaminating the transmission fluid. If you live in a cold climate, I don't recommend doing that, but make sure you use a high quality radiator.

You said at beginning of video you would put two trans coolers in instead of the radiator cooler, but one of the most important thing the radiator trans cooler does is warm up fluid some in winter.. some vehicle's have issues if they are running too cool in winter.. best to just put In a new aftermarket radiator.
That is what I would do, however I live in a hot climate. Thanks for bringing it up.
Please help. All the bolts are gone. I can't find anywhere a kit or what size they are. Can anyone help me find a bolt kit for tcm.??? Ty.
@707Pelican I'll check at the junkyard if they have any in there. I'll make an ebay listing if I find any.
