The new Hoka One One Zinal is a super fun, lower profile trail/hybrid shoe that really has me excited. It's super reminiscent of one of my OG Hoka favs, the Huaka. It's a low profile, simple hybrid shoe that will work for a lot of people for runs under 20 miles (I prefer a bit more underfoot for the longer days). What do YOU think about the Zinal? Will the crazy price keep you away or waiting for a sale?

I've really been enjoying the new Hoka Zinal - it's low profile, vibram grip and lightweight make it a solid summer trail runner. But, at $160, it's a spicy meatball. What do you think of the new trail shoe from Hoka?
Hey, how well does it breath? I feel like most trail uppers are so overbuilt for what I need and would trade off that protection for feet that aren't overheating. If you have any recommendations, I'm all ears.
Please review speedcross 5
How is it for distances greater than 20 miles, 50k-100k
Isn’t it similar to torrent 2? I don’t see why I would want this over the torrent 2 as both seem to be targeting similar runs
I really want to try this shoe, I loved the original Torrent with its lightweight features. I do want to know if it will go longer though... 20 miles +... it's £160 here and I agree it's a high price. I tried the mafate speed but unlike the advertising it is way to heavy for long distances and has literally zero grip on wet chalk!
Pre-ordered these! Can’t wait.
Loving the dynamic moody lighting.
Great review. I totally agree with you, because I too fell in love with these shoes. Actually bought them on 'looks', but they really run great! (Up to 25km) They are nice, light and good fit. But... after 100km I can already see considerable wear on the studs, I only have 1 or 2mm left at the front. And then they are quite expensive.
Another honest and great review. Hoka’s tend to be too cushy for me, but this one looks good. But too pricy. Going for the Kiger.
Definitely looks like a fast trail shoe. Looking forward to the follow-up. I'd like to see you follow up on some of your initial favorite shoes to see if any changed your mind 6 month/12 months later. Happy 4th!
I’ve finally pulled the trigger on a pair of these! Pickings are currently slim here in New Zealand for big shoes (size 13 or 14, depending on fit), but Hoka just got a new drop of Zinals so…
I've put these through everything from half marathons to scrambles to backpacking trips and feel like they perform great in all aspects.
Oooh, Strawberry Shortcake rocks. I might have to try these guys out and see how they feel on my feet. Perfect for the mix road/farm running I do some days. I might just have to wait for a good sale.
Love the review and of course the shirt. The price is very steep. Looks like a great shoe.
Love your honest and solid reviews. Curious to know how many miles you get on shoes before going to review.
Just bought a pair, crazy excited for something like compared to my speed goat 4.
More of a road runner but love trail and fell running when I get the chance. Would love to do some of my shorter runs with on some of the nearby trails but struggled to decide on a shoes that’s will cope with asphalt at the start and end and trail in the middle. This sounds like it might be a good option, think I’ll wait for a sale though.
I picked up a pair! Super excited to take them out tomorrow. $160 was a tough pill to swallow. Feels like I’m spending $40 just for Vibram over the Torrent.. but then I put it on. That tongue, that lockdown. So comfortable. It’ll be hard to go back to the Torrent(my previous fav)! What sucks is my other favorite shoe is the Evo Speedgoat ($159). Hoka going to make me go broke.
I ran the 16hr 80km (50 mile) UTMB x-traversee on these. With the rough alpine terrain, I preferred its lower stack and simple form. To me it's been good for long distance. It does wear a bit quicker than others.
'bout time we see some new trail shoes from them!
Great review got it in Europe on sale for 80 euro .. amazing value and great 10/15 K race shoe.
that classic jogging in place shot..., it’s why we are here.
it’s hot here in oklahoma.., I went out for a run.., felt great for 3, thought I was pretty good hydration wise..,
but I beat down buy the humidity by 4.5.. oh well. I tried
Thanks for the review, these shoes sound like a blast to run in. Think I should I order these in same size as my Mach 4s?
Great review Ethan! Would you pick those over the Brooks Catamount? Believe they are both same price.
Dig the shirt too. Hokas have given my blisters at high mileage until the Mach 4. What is a trail shoe that is comparable to the Mach?
In the hybrid category, the Saucony Mad River is a steal.
OOOH BOY you got THE shoe.... what a surprise....Hope you and Kim and Gus are having a happy 4th! Take Care...Love you all!
Expensive WITH durability questions. That's a winning combination!
durability is not the only factor that counts, when it comes to the price.
This shoe is all about performance - when lightweight and responsiveness comes into play, durability can suffer.
See Nike Vapourfly... People spend rediciulous amounts of money, for shoes that last around 200km.
Great review... the price is a little high for what you get... the hawaiian shirt is ON POINT!
Good review. Just gotta think what else you can get for $160 like the evo speedgoat. Unless weight is your main concern, seems like the evo sg is more value
Interesting shoe and great review (as ever). Would love to know how they compare to the Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra (my current fave trail shoe for summer / buff trails). Terrex SU appears to have similar stack and lug profile, but looks to be firmer in the midsole and have a more durable outsole. Also, fit - are these narrow in the forefoot (like I find the Cliftons to be), or do they have space for the foot to spread?
Thanks for the review.
The high price is maybe due to the Vibram LiteBase, at least partly.
It looks like some stones are stuck in the grooves of the exposed midsole. I experience that kind of issue with the Evo Mafate. Is it an issue with the Zinal?
well done to you, pal!
FWIW the Zinal and Torrent 2 have the same midsole foam, but the Hoka stats indicate the Zinal has 20% more foam (477 cm3) than the Torrent 2 (395 cm3). I don't have a big gripe with the difference in price based on that info. But still.
Nice looking shoe though you'd have thought the price would have been lower seeing as though there's less features and materials. Looks a good shoe to try 👌🏃♂️
Was going to get some, looks perfect for short summer races... and then saw the $160. 😬 looks like I'll stick to Torrent.
So curious to try this. I need a good low drop road/trail hybrid for lower miles but have been steered away from Hokas because of ankle instability. Seems like this might be a good first Hoka?
Otter pops are the best!
Happy that Hoka added vibram outsoles to a light weight trail shoes. I’ve ripped the outside off of 2 of my torrent 2. From your footage, your forefoot seems to be pushing outward, spilling over the shoe... possibly another durability issue with the lack of support of the upper material. I’ll stick with the torrent and SG4. Thanks but no thanks Hoka zinal.
I don't want to take away from the Zinal, but did you ever give an update on the Nike Invincible durability? Thanks!
It's strikes me as the Salomon of the Hoka line. And that makes me a little excited. But with the price you can get the Speedgoat Evo (or something like the Salomon Slab Ultras) so I dunno
Reminds me of the Speed Instinct 2
it's interesting that the Torrent is fairly similar but SO much cheaper
I like the shirt 👍👍
Hi, I've heard that the Zinal fit a little big, considering that I wear US 11 in Tecton X and Speedgoat 4/5, you recommend going down to US 10.5 in Zinal, plus I have narrow feet and I like a good fit.
What’s spicy is the Nike hat during a Hoka review. 🤪
shhhh! :)
That'll change once his new Hoka bucket arrives 😂
@@seanmac80 I like that bucket. And with Walmsley sporting it, so will a lot of other people! 🤙🏼
I really like the mint one from his pegasus trail review
Hey you guys!
I like the color....I know color shouldn’t matter...but it’s pretty. So now I want it.... 😬
Hi Mr G Man, do you think the Zinal is like a trail version of the Mach 4? I cannot take the Mach 4 off, but I don’t want to ruin it on the trails. Peace ✌🏻🇦🇺🏃🏻♂️😁…what do you think is a trail version of the Mach?
I’ve been running in the torrent and torrent 2 the last 3years. You mentioned you preferred the zinal over the torrent…why?
Looks like a Mach 4 trail shoe. I’d love to give them a spin but I agree the price is outrageous
Exactly what I thought, Mach 4 with tread. Interesting 🤔
Why do you prefer the Zinal over the Terrex Speed Ultra?
I don't mind low durability if the price is lower. Like Rincon 2, got a couple of pairs on discount for less than this one shoe.
Yup, totally agree!
The previous year's Kinvara ($50-$80) - always and forever.
They look narrow in the footage as your foot is wider than the outsole appears to be, no issues there?
The mesh is indestructible. my first pair did over 1200km. yes I had to glue the toe bumper and after the kilometers the lugs were completely gone. but the mesh was still like the first day. I ran around the planet with the shoe in really lousy surroundings. Dolomites, Patagonia, Zion NP, ... . river crossings are also no problem. EF has little material that could hold moisture. After all the kilometers, I was also rafting with the shoe. no joke.
Really great review! I have a question on how these would compare to say the Brooks Catamount or Terrex Speed Ultras in terms of speed. Would you say this is faster on uphills compared to their counterparts? If you haven’t tried those, how well do the Zinals work on climbs? Thanks and have a great day (:
I have both , catamount are little bit more reactive but stiff, zinal more light . In Downhill run zinal works good and better than Catamount ,this are my impressions
Can you review some running shorts?
Is it blue though? blueish greenish turquoiseish maybe?
So they’ve added a vibram sole to a torrent and increased the price significantly.
Looks and sounds like a trail mach 4!
I wish $160 was an expensive shoe in Canada. These and other top end shoes push $200+ easily.
Same in Europe... I bet these will be around 160€, which is around $190 with the current exchange rate 😅
15-20% duty will do that.
I know. $160 would be such a deal, always have to look for deals or wait.
$250 here in Australia 🤦🏻♂️
I feel that pain. S-Lab Solomon’s are $220 plus
Like the idea of the shoe, love the weight, low stack height, and simplicity... but I buy 1 new shoe per year. If I knew this would last 1k miles, I'd go for the $160. Looking forward to the durability report after 250+miles.
I can confirm I passed 1K km on these shoes and am now looking to replace them, with the same shoes probably!
So 6 months from now these will be Hoka’s best selling trail shoe?
How is the stability of this shoe?
i loved the challenger atr 6, but the upper gave up way too early. here i see the zinal has the exact same weakpoint, which is not having a welded overlay in the lower part of the upper that is right above the midsole, specifically on the inner side. so the bad durability prediction is probably on point here!
After far over 1200km in the Zinal. The upper is NO weakpoint. I'm so impressed with this shoe. The only Point i had to glue by my own was the toebumper after 1 year of use. But that's OK Case i used them in the Dolomites on sharpe rocks, gravel fields in Patagonia... The water drains out that good, that i was rafting with them 😅
Sorry for this fanboy talk, but i also can send you pictures from the upper... The mesh is like new. Currently surching for an replacement because there is no profil anymore and yes the midsole is done. The insoles are also flat as paper.
Hi quick suggestion -> You already have criteria such as build quality, comfort, fit, price and looks. It would be great if you could add a "sustainability" element to it. And research / ask makers about a) environmentally friendly (recyclable? how long does it take in a landfill to breakdown?) and b) socially friendly. (Any sweat shop in the supply chain?). At the start it may be very difficult to enquire and a lot of shoes wouldn't maybe have a high ratio. But in this day and age I think it is a good criteria to choose a product. Thanks!
Great idea!! I have asked similar questions in the past, don’t get much back in the way of specifics, BUT, I agree that this is incredibly important to address! Even just green practices in manufacturing/development/etc. Salomon is putting some of their initiatives public which is nice to see.
It says Vegan, so I would like to understand how “vegan” it is.
Damn, I don't want to like this shoe at the price, but it seems to good not to try. Thanks Ethan! Does Hoka ever give a reason for the higher price tag?
prefer the Torrent .. not just for the price
I don’t know why they didn’t just add mega grip to the torrent. Perfect all round package. £160 is reaching a little IMO
Mud? I had a hybrid shoe that was great until the trail was wet. The trails here are poorly drained clay and usually wet. That was a problem.
I want these! But they should be $130 max. Just can’t pull the trigger at $160.
Wait...there's a book club? Man I've been gone a long time...
This shoe costs US$ 245 in Sweden. That includes 25% sales tax. Ouch!
Seems very similar to the Brooks Catamount? How would you compare? Both are the same price.
Catamount is narrower and far more responsive. Fit is more precision in the Catamount as well.
By a miracle got a pair cheap. Great shoe for moderate rails but mine picked up a ton of gravel in the structure of the outsole. Anyone else see this?
Hej Ethan,
The price is really an issue! It's way more expensive than the Hoka One One Torrent 2 here in Sweden.
For me unfortunately is a no go, I would love to try, because it's something perfect for me, but not at this price.
The brands are quite shooting high this days, what it is happening...
Cheers,
160 USD is a bit steep
What is similar for less money?
Main Hoka issues are, from my point of view, the outsole. Designs are cool, comfort is correct, but durability is meh!
Does your point of view include trail shoes? The Vibram Outsoles last forever
@@CKledde torrent 2 is a very fragile shoe
@@possiquesi I've done over 500 miles in my first Torrent 2 pair, now I'm at 300 miles in my second pair. The second pair has a bit more outsole wear than the 1st one, around 300 miles the upper starts to break up little by little but I would not call that "fragile"...
@@martinv.4172 I did 40 miles and the outsole was destroyed. I returned them
@@martinv.4172 I guess it depends on the terrain
Huaka was the 🐐.
That price is ridiculous for what it is.
Vibram-Sole, ProFly Cushion, the lightest trailshoe in the market?!
I bet you change your oppinion once you stand in the shoe.
@@dermarcb its not even close to being lightest...you have salomon pulsar for example, first on my mind! ;)
Maybe that’s what Hoka was going for to compete with the s/lab series or the Brooks catamount which are in the same price range. I find it quite a narrow niche though and would probably stick with challenger or torrent from hoka. Happy running y’all!!
@@adventureornothing4137 Salomon refers to the Pulsar as being a shoe for road and mixed terrain on their own website. But I get your point and also don't want to start a major argumentation here about grams, because probably you're right! :D
But still... The Shoe has a lot to offer, is great fun in the trails and if somebody wants a light cushioned trailshoe by HOKA at a lower price point, one could still go with the torrent 2... Don't you think?! :)
@@dermarcb yeah you're right.. Pulsar is something between road and trail shoe... But basicly if I'm not wrong its meant for rolling terrain(gravel roads, single track non technical terrain). Salomon Road running is phantasm and sonic(balance, accelerate, confidence) shoes... But yeah hoka zinale is solid piece of shoe if durability is worth the price tag. 👍
Wild
Merrell Moab Flight sounds like a better choice...
The extra $$ goes to vibram !
Not much lateral support to keep your foot in place. Ya gonna roll your ankles in this one when running trail
have had zero stability issues in this one. Good ground feel, flexibility - feels good!
So... A Solomon Sense Ride 4 from Hoka but by the price of two! Seems a nice shoe but that price... Way too much!
40c here in T bay canada. To hot run
We hit mid 40s (celsius) here last week. Not pleasant, especially without AC.
$160!!!! Too spicy!!!
These should be $130 like the Torrents
It looks like a good shoe but its way too expensive. I stay with the speedgoat
Vegan and recycled materials, I wonder if that had an impact on the cost of material?
That's a steep $$ amount. It's like many of the carbon plate shoes... GREAT but short lived.
New Garmin, new Hokas, new Garmin, new Hokas.
Ah, decisions, decisions.
This looks like a little less comfortable and more expensive ATR 5. No thanx. But thanx for the review
Hoka creating great non-like Hoka shoes. Other brands creating great Hoka like shoes. What is going on?
Who else wanted to scrape out the rock stuck in the outsole?
Just like Porsche. Remove seats reduce weight, radios, comfort features & charge more, a lot more. Hokas my favorite, but the worst durability of any shoe on the market.
Worse than Altra?
I think if you're a trail runner you should at least try them once. I rode out a couple of pairs before going back to what I have always ran in, they never got to the 'feel natural/comfortable' stage and as soon as the trail narrowed I got (or felt like I got) clumsy in Hoka's. Each to their own but yeah they're definitely not for everyone, and I guess the price will automatically alienate some runners. I'm sure Jim W will draw a lot of people into the brand and it will be interesting to see how they're viewed say a decade from now
And, no discounts on Running Warehouse on Hoka’s. I do still think that Hoka is on top when it comes to trail shoes but they’ve yet to produce a super foam and their replacement cycles on some of their models is longer than the vast majority of their competitors. The Mafate has only had upper updates since it was introduced - the midsole and outsole has remain unchanged.
@@sram1996 Not sure how much running you do but i disagree! Hoka is my favorite but they do not last as long as any of the competition none.
@@markscott2259 I should’ve replied to the video and not you because I don’t disagree with you about the durability - it’s been a mixed bag for me for sure, but better than Altra, though I’m not sure that’s saying much. 😂I think performance-wise Hoka is probably still on top only in the trail world. I run ~3000+ miles a year, the vast majority of which is on trail, with ~500k feet of climbing.
Race Shoe
far too expensive for such cheap materials ... hoka should invest more in quality and cushioning instead of sponsoring athletes ... don't forget the normal runners made hoka great
160 ?
Then no !
Torrent 2 not Torin 2…had me confused for a bit. 🤦♂️
I'll enunciate my "Ts" better next round!
Thanx for the review - it's a pass.
Let’s charge more for less. Yah! Should have been $140.
"responsive"...say no more! I'm out.
