    The new Hoka One One Zinal is a super fun, lower profile trail/hybrid shoe that really has me excited. It's super reminiscent of one of my OG Hoka favs, the Huaka. It's a low profile, simple hybrid shoe that will work for a lot of people for runs under 20 miles (I prefer a bit more underfoot for the longer days). What do YOU think about the Zinal? Will the crazy price keep you away or waiting for a sale?

    I've really been enjoying the new Hoka Zinal - it's low profile, vibram grip and lightweight make it a solid summer trail runner. But, at $160, it's a spicy meatball. What do you think of the new trail shoe from Hoka?

    • @BoKristensen
      @BoKristensen Před 2 lety +4

      Hey, how well does it breath? I feel like most trail uppers are so overbuilt for what I need and would trade off that protection for feet that aren't overheating. If you have any recommendations, I'm all ears.

      I really want to try this shoe, I loved the original Torrent with its lightweight features. I do want to know if it will go longer though... 20 miles +... it's £160 here and I agree it's a high price. I tried the mafate speed but unlike the advertising it is way to heavy for long distances and has literally zero grip on wet chalk!

    Great review. I totally agree with you, because I too fell in love with these shoes. Actually bought them on 'looks', but they really run great! (Up to 25km) They are nice, light and good fit. But... after 100km I can already see considerable wear on the studs, I only have 1 or 2mm left at the front. And then they are quite expensive.

    More of a road runner but love trail and fell running when I get the chance. Would love to do some of my shorter runs with on some of the nearby trails but struggled to decide on a shoes that’s will cope with asphalt at the start and end and trail in the middle. This sounds like it might be a good option, think I’ll wait for a sale though.

    I picked up a pair! Super excited to take them out tomorrow. $160 was a tough pill to swallow. Feels like I’m spending $40 just for Vibram over the Torrent.. but then I put it on. That tongue, that lockdown. So comfortable. It’ll be hard to go back to the Torrent(my previous fav)! What sucks is my other favorite shoe is the Evo Speedgoat ($159). Hoka going to make me go broke.

      durability is not the only factor that counts, when it comes to the price.

    Interesting shoe and great review (as ever). Would love to know how they compare to the Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra (my current fave trail shoe for summer / buff trails). Terrex SU appears to have similar stack and lug profile, but looks to be firmer in the midsole and have a more durable outsole. Also, fit - are these narrow in the forefoot (like I find the Cliftons to be), or do they have space for the foot to spread?

  • @antoinedaina355
    @antoinedaina355 Před 2 lety

    Thanks for the review.
    The high price is maybe due to the Vibram LiteBase, at least partly.
    It looks like some stones are stuck in the grooves of the exposed midsole. I experience that kind of issue with the Evo Mafate. Is it an issue with the Zinal?

    FWIW the Zinal and Torrent 2 have the same midsole foam, but the Hoka stats indicate the Zinal has 20% more foam (477 cm3) than the Torrent 2 (395 cm3). I don't have a big gripe with the difference in price based on that info. But still.

    Happy that Hoka added vibram outsoles to a light weight trail shoes. I’ve ripped the outside off of 2 of my torrent 2. From your footage, your forefoot seems to be pushing outward, spilling over the shoe... possibly another durability issue with the lack of support of the upper material. I’ll stick with the torrent and SG4. Thanks but no thanks Hoka zinal.

    The mesh is indestructible. my first pair did over 1200km. yes I had to glue the toe bumper and after the kilometers the lugs were completely gone. but the mesh was still like the first day. I ran around the planet with the shoe in really lousy surroundings. Dolomites, Patagonia, Zion NP, ... . river crossings are also no problem. EF has little material that could hold moisture. After all the kilometers, I was also rafting with the shoe. no joke.

    i loved the challenger atr 6, but the upper gave up way too early. here i see the zinal has the exact same weakpoint, which is not having a welded overlay in the lower part of the upper that is right above the midsole, specifically on the inner side. so the bad durability prediction is probably on point here!

      After far over 1200km in the Zinal. The upper is NO weakpoint. I'm so impressed with this shoe. The only Point i had to glue by my own was the toebumper after 1 year of use. But that's OK Case i used them in the Dolomites on sharpe rocks, gravel fields in Patagonia... The water drains out that good, that i was rafting with them 😅
      Sorry for this fanboy talk, but i also can send you pictures from the upper... The mesh is like new. Currently surching for an replacement because there is no profil anymore and yes the midsole is done. The insoles are also flat as paper.

    Hi quick suggestion -> You already have criteria such as build quality, comfort, fit, price and looks. It would be great if you could add a "sustainability" element to it. And research / ask makers about a) environmentally friendly (recyclable? how long does it take in a landfill to breakdown?) and b) socially friendly. (Any sweat shop in the supply chain?). At the start it may be very difficult to enquire and a lot of shoes wouldn't maybe have a high ratio. But in this day and age I think it is a good criteria to choose a product. Thanks!

      Maybe that’s what Hoka was going for to compete with the s/lab series or the Brooks catamount which are in the same price range. I find it quite a narrow niche though and would probably stick with challenger or torrent from hoka. Happy running y’all!!

      @@adventureornothing4137 Salomon refers to the Pulsar as being a shoe for road and mixed terrain on their own website. But I get your point and also don't want to start a major argumentation here about grams, because probably you're right! :D
      But still... The Shoe has a lot to offer, is great fun in the trails and if somebody wants a light cushioned trailshoe by HOKA at a lower price point, one could still go with the torrent 2... Don't you think?! :)

      @@dermarcb yeah you're right.. Pulsar is something between road and trail shoe... But basicly if I'm not wrong its meant for rolling terrain(gravel roads, single track non technical terrain). Salomon Road running is phantasm and sonic(balance,accelerate, confidence) shoes... But yeah hoka zinale is solid piece of shoe if durability is worth the price tag. 👍

      I think if you're a trail runner you should at least try them once. I rode out a couple of pairs before going back to what I have always ran in, they never got to the 'feel natural/comfortable' stage and as soon as the trail narrowed I got (or felt like I got) clumsy in Hoka's. Each to their own but yeah they're definitely not for everyone, and I guess the price will automatically alienate some runners. I'm sure Jim W will draw a lot of people into the brand and it will be interesting to see how they're viewed say a decade from now

      And, no discounts on Running Warehouse on Hoka’s. I do still think that Hoka is on top when it comes to trail shoes but they’ve yet to produce a super foam and their replacement cycles on some of their models is longer than the vast majority of their competitors. The Mafate has only had upper updates since it was introduced - the midsole and outsole has remain unchanged.

I run ~3000+ miles a year, the vast majority of which is on trail, with ~500k feet of climbing.
