Don't forget, this is almost 50 years ago. It was due to trailblazers like Best and Puskas that we have players like Messi today. Comparing them is stupid. Imagine how good Best would have been if he had the diet, training, coaching and sheer footballing history that today's players have the luxury of drawing on. Also amazing how quickly people forget players like Ronaldo (the original) and Zidane when talking about the best ever. The mark of a great footballer is how far ahead of his time he is. By that measurement Best is, without doubt, one of the greatest.
I still think George was the best of all time. And I was lucky enough as a ten year old to watch Puskas, Di Stefano and Ghento as the forward line for Real in the 1960 European Cup final @ Hampden Park in Glasgow Scotland.
They are very similar, but like you say, times have changed. The weight of the old balls, the weight of the boots, the brutal tackles, the muddy pitches... it does make you wonder how good he would be now. And imagine if he had spent his entire youth training in the elite Barca academy (like Messi did). They would both make it into my 'all-time 11' -could you imagine the link up play?!
To C Mc D: I appreciate your well-written comment of truth and insight. Also, adding to this, the new rules of today, creates defenders' trepidation, with the need to play cautiously, making strikers like Messi, flourish.
Tavy@ people forgett this was the 1960s , training meant drincking 6 days a week except a friday. And those cow parks they played on that was a foot deep in mud, plus those old heavy leather balls. Best with no shin guards on and socks at hes ankles playing in those conditions and standing on the ball saying to the defender "well come and take it off me" is one of the greatest sporting moments any one will ever see or remember! I couldnt tell he was so good with both feet at controling, hitting 50 yard passes with either foot plus scoring from tight angles while under heavy pressure and rideing the tackle, or tackles. So take that talent and place it in todays game with the training they do, the diet, the coaching, the parks, and it goes on and on. To me he wasnt just the greatest player but he was the greatest entertainer on tv to watch, even better than comedians, boxers, film stars, ect... Benfica tried to kill him but that would take a gun to get that man of a park. He was 5ft8 and 9 stone with no shin guards on. Just sheer natural ability from the gods. Even with one leg he wouldve played on. The hard treatment best took that night is the worse i have seen on any player. If that was in todays ponces game at least 3 players would have been sent off. Best tore them to shreds. A heard from some one who was there that night that best even said try and not kick me or stand on me when am down lol a was lmao. That sounds like best. Maradona wouldv rolled about as if he he fell of a high flat, then wouldve snapped and got sent of after the first 5 minutes. Starts at 3:11 until 3:28 in this fantastic balance allows him to step off the ground and reset his feet/ankles to hit the ground running in a change of direction so that the defender doesn't spot it in time to adjust to block. Best disguised it perfectly. The disguise allowed him to dummy so many players/goalkeepers, as Gordon Banks admitted.

Poor George had the legs kicked off him. No protection from officials. This good surface allowed him to show his brilliant close skills. Usually most English pitches thru winter in those day's were like potato field and the tackling would involve police nowadays

How can people say this guy wasnt the greatest ever! If pele, maradona, messi, and company recieved that abuse they would of wanted of that park asap. Or would still be rolling around the grass! Honest question, were shin guards a requirement in the game in 1968? because I don't think Best was wearing any at the beginning and definitely not after he scored that last goal, 6:22 his socks are all the way down to his ankles. 5:03..is that the first rabona ever recorded on tv during a live game? I'm simply amazed at how great of a player he was. Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldhino, Maradona, they all look like students of Best after watching this.
Rabona? Yeah. Best did that after the ref blew to halt play. The commentator, Kenneth Wolsenholme, said Best scored by snapping up a defender's mistake. The defender was committed to booting the ball upfield, but Best's toe poke bounced the ball off the defender's standing foot to nutmeg him while his Portuguese right foot hoofed the remaining air upfield. Best's manager, Matt Busby, marvelled at how many ways Best could beat a player.
I didn't mean it in terms of stats and records, I meant it in terms of just pure ability and skill. He did what Messi can do but when hacking someone down two footed was just deemed acceptable or a foul at a push and he still kept at them. The likes of Messi, Ronaldo would be bitching to the ref.
Best and Charlton were outstanding in this final. As George once said they should have built on this but it was as if they reached the "one" they wanted and wouldn't push for another, another and another with better players tgey could have had. George lost his way and gave up trying. This was evident in his 70-73 performances. Wayward passing, shooting from the corner kicks, taking on too many players and losing possession easily. Shame, at this time he was world class.
nope it wasn't till early 90s when you had to wear shin pads. shin pads never used to have ankle supports or straps to strap round your leg, they used to have tiny spikes that attached to your socks to stop them falling down. If you look closely too you'll notice the goal keeper isn't even wearing gloves
You have to remember he is still only 22. His lack of awareness of what is going on around him is his one great flaw I feel. And I've never heard anyone point this out. Its perhaps not that he was greedy, but when you haven't yet learned to look up while you play. It is still a fantastic performance, and he does put in some fine crosses and passes. Wembley is a huge pitch and he was not the only one who was legless in extra time. He also has had about 10 wicked fouls committed on him. I have to say however, I was surprised to see him respond to them threatening a retaliation. Good for him.
