  • Have westerns reached their creative potential or are we just repeatedly scratching the same surface of something with limitless creative possibilities? In this video essay, I take a look at the animated bizarre masterpiece "Rango" and how it brilliantly showed us that more can still be done with the tired genre.

    Just wanted clarify since I've been getting a few comments saying that I copied Cosmodore's idea, that I had worked on this video for almost a month and released it just two days after Cosmodore uploaded his (which I loved by the way!). I honestly wish I could of written, recorded, and edited a video like this in less than two days but alas, it takes me forever to do anything. Its an honest and spooky case of parallel creation. With that out of the way, thanks for watching my video! I hope you enjoyed it. I figured I’d upload something more fun and light hearted for the beginning of summer. It took me longer to make than I originally intended and to make a long story short, that’s because I’m currently undergoing a major change in my lifestyle that is very intensive and time consuming which has and unfortunately will continue to add delays to the upload schedule but I promise it’s temporary and that uploads will be consistent and frequent once things are back on track. I can’t tell you how excited I am for the next video, it’ll be a great one. Anyway, have you seen Rango? If so, what did you think? If not, go watch it, it’s amazing!

      When I first saw Rango, I was about 8 or 9, and it wasn't until just last year that I watched it again with my family and realized, "Holy cow this is an awesome movie." Thanks for making such a great video about it.

Upon which, Jake exclaims, "You got killer in your eyes son? I don't see it." When Rango comes back after having his epiphany, Jake is once again staring into Rango's gun.
      Rango states, "It only takes one bullet."

    What I also love about specifically Rango’s character is that despite how strange and ridiculous he is, there are many moments before his encounter with the spirit of the west where he proves he is a hero already. He was putting pieces together of the water mystery as well as the idea of following the pipes or putting out the torches to find the exit. His own self doubt and fear held him back but when it came to it, he was smart and truly came to respect the townspeople and really want to help them. I think that’s part of what sells the final encounter with rattle snake jake; he already had it in him, he just had to realize it’s not about him or how people viewed him, it’s about what needed to be done like you said.

    Something that always got me, even as a kid, was the differing scales of the characters. Some animals depicted would be way larger than the others, but in the story are actually very small. For example, the wild boar blacksmith is the same size as all the other townsfolk, including a spider and a tortoise. Boars get pretty friggin big! But then there are characters who are truly massive, and they all tend to play critical parts in the story. The Armadillo, the Hawk, and Rattlesnake Jake. I wonder if there’s some symbolism to that.

    • @sirmongrel511
      @sirmongrel511 Před rokem +123

      that and some props were small (like their guns) while others were human scale (like the town clock being a pocket watch). It was odd but honestly I think the film is begging to be watched on shrooms or something.

    • @enriquesaenz3574
      @enriquesaenz3574 Před rokem +57

      Perhaps its the impact they had on Rango's story? Rattlesnake Jake and the Hawk were his most influential obstacles, while the Armadillo and even the Spirit of the West were his most influential guides. This is only the first thing that comes to mind. It could also be that they wanted the Hawk and Jake to be frighteningly bigger than Rango.

    • @michaelsauve851

      This movie is meta af
      Think about it, the premise is that of a lizard in an aquarium being transported trough life
      Plastic wife, fake skies, mundane day to day so much so he invents himself a life
      He is longing for something more to happen, for his glass bubbles to shatter (the truman show)
      As he wished it, it happens
      Is it in his mind or a true event?
      And heres where it gets me hard:
      Is it simply another one of his plays or did it really happens and it is about him coming to terms with all his fears, flaws, hopes and regrets?
      So i'd say that some things are important like time, foes, the fact he said he killed them brothers with one bullet but yet he defeated Jake with one too, but without even firing it
      There is so much
      The paradise at the end when he finaly crossed that road
      An allegory for paradise or finaly being free after having bountiful things kept away from him since birth?
      He is the working class stuck in the american dream who got transformed from fighting for his ideals, finding a community and helping it in adversity, etc...
      I have so many point of views on this movie and its why i find it fascinating
      In the end i read it as a classic: just be yourself and live the life you aspire to
      /don't lie to yourself and wait for the glass to break

  • @tred6292
    @tred6292 Před rokem +74

    Not to mention, like you brought up with the owl turning his head around, or Rango not being able to camouflage, the film uses the fact that it's characters are animals in unique ways that add to who the characters are and what role they are able to play in the story. Sometimes in anthropomorphic animal films these days, the narrative forgets that it's dealing with animals and writes all the characters like they are humans. To the point where you could replace the animal cast with a human cast and still have the same story (case and point, "Sing").
    Don't get me wrong, I love the movie Zootopia, and I found its narrative of using predator and prey to symbolize racial inequality, and foxes and rabbits to symbolize societal stereotypes, to be a really clever tactic for the film's thematic storytelling. I just wish that film gave us more scenes like the one where Judy is using her bunny athleticism to give out parking tickets. It's great when you can see the writers playing around with the idea of "how would this animal use their natural talents to solve this problem?"
    That same question about animal characteristics being used to shape the characters, their actions, and how they go through situations, is a big part of the movie Rango. Which is another reason why that movie is so great.
    I just wished more filmmakers utilized that same potention when writing for their "talking animal" movies.

    A nice bit of visual story telling is , while Rango can't change his colors well, his cloths slowly change to match the setting and role he's trying to play, the more he becomes the gun slinging hero the closer his outfit reflects that, even regressing at times before finally becoming the spitting image of the Sheriff the people needed inside and out. He now truely blended in with his new home and family.
