    For Terraforming Mars you guys should really play with the Corporation cards and drafting after each round. It adds a lot to the game and puts more strategy into building your engine.

    Regarding moon spaces in TM: One of them is a Mars moon, the other is a Jupiter moon; there is an event card where you smash the other Mars moon into Mars (granting heat and minerals).

  • @darrenq1067
    @darrenq1067 Před 7 lety +1

    Trust me, the only way to play TM is the draft variant. I've played this game at least 10 times and the replayability with the different corporations is so satisfying. Last night I played, of my initial 10 cards draw I just kept 2 (paying 6) as the rest did not fit my Heat strategy (with Helion corp)... Then we played again and I had the Green corp and kept building parks, increasing my plant production and terraforming. Such a great great game.

    • @KissellMissile
      @KissellMissile Před 7 lety +1

      I'd say the only way to play it is without drafting. The starting corporations are a must though.

    • @chadkrizan9864
      @chadkrizan9864 Před 7 lety

      I much prefer not drafting to drafting after 20+ games. I think a lot of folks make judgements about the game after 1 or 2 plays, not realizing there's a billion ways this game can play out. Things that are powerful one game can be completely ineffective or absent in the next.

  • @chadkrizan9864
    @chadkrizan9864 Před 7 lety +6

    I feel like a lot of the criticism for Terraforming Mars here is just based on not having many plays under their belts. There's a lot of things you start to see in the game a dozen plus games in, and at over 20 plays, I'm still seeing new things every game that I didn't think were possible viable paths.
    If Terraforming Mars has a weakness, it is the fact that it might not always make a great first impression, and in this day of near infinite choices in games, people will move on if their first experience with a game isn't great.
    For example, a lot of the complaints about bad draws in the game don't make sense to me after a bunch of play. The fact that some cards are useful late vs. early is a big decision point in the game. Do I pay for this card that I know I can't use for a long time, or do I keep my money for more immediate uses? Some generations, you don't keep any of your cards, and some times you keep them all. I've had opening hands where I kept two cards, and opening hands where I've kept all 10, and been equally competitive regardless.
    Or, some times, board play won't be a key part of your game, while other times it will. You can't go into the game saying your strategy for the game is going to be X. You have to look at your cards, and see how to make the best of what you're getting. Different players will do vastly different things in the game, depending on what they get, which I find super interesting!

    • @Jiiri
      @Jiiri Před 7 lety

      That's fair enough, but is probably true of tons of strategy games. It's a big ask, though. "After a dozen times through this long, involved game, it'll start to make sense" is true and irrelevent in a day when we have access to so many great games. It seems like number of plays to appreciate depth is a metric and some games can do better or worse on that metric. If a game takes 4 hours to play, but takes 10 plays to be able to actually make meaningful decisions, that's a design flaw, in other words. I may start thinking of more games with this time-vs-appreciable strategy metric.
      I agree wholeheartedly with a lot of your insights. Thanks for sharing!

    We had someone come in a very close second without putting a single structure on Mars, lots of Space and Earth cards.
    But that cost them the game because the winner (me) picked up extra points from awards like Mayor of Mars (3 cities) or best Miner. But they came close.

    Terraforming mars is excellent as a solo player game. I'm not sure I ever want to play it as a multi-player because I enjoy it so much on my own.

    • @kkey1030
      @kkey1030 Před 7 lety +1

      I have to say that one reason is because there are whole elements that aren't played in the solo variant, which makes it a bit more streamlined and less "fussy." But for whatever reason, it's one of my favorite solo games.

    Just so my picks are made public, I think Raiders and Kingdomino will take the win this year. Although I think Exit is new and different, I think it will be difficult for the jury to pick something that has no replayability. Raiders is a reasonable pick and a little more sensible than Terraforming Mars. I think Kingdomino is family friendly and that is the basis of the category. Just my two cents.
    BTW, enjoyed the discussion

    I completely agree with Lincoln on Terraforming Mars. I like the game and I've won a few times, but every time I've won I've done so by NOT Terraforming Mars which feels a bit disappointing. Some of the most powerful point cards have nothing do do with the three Terraforming goals. In one game, I had over 20 points from bugs and microbes on my cards and I wiped the floor with my opponents and there was nothing they could do to counter it. I might prune some of the cards from the game.

  • @Ragelog

    Drafting in Terraforming Mars is a no-go for me. It adds way too much time to the game. Everyone first has to draft cards they think they want, then sit there again and decide if they actually want to buy them. In my opinion, too many people come into this game thinking that they need to find and build the perfect cards to satisfy the game end conditions. If you are waiting for the perfect group of cards to make your game work, you aren't playing correctly. Don't overlook the standard projects, which often seem like a waste of money. If you build your engine effectively, you should be awash with extra money towards the end of the game. At that point, you can start building greenery, raising the temperature, and building cities to help your score. The end game comes very quickly. I think the "Corporate Era" cards help a lot with this and are a must for any game that I will play. I was pretty lukewarm on Terraforming Mars until I discovered that it's not so much about waiting for the perfect cards, but making the cards you do get work for you. Thanks for the discussion, I always enjoy the content you guys put out.

    Terraforming Mars is an incredibly fun game. But the card draw so critical that there are times when I won or lost and I genuinely didn't feel that every decision I made was that important. However, please so not do the drafting variant. It just adds way too much time to the game that it detracts from the overall experience.

    The most take that cards are plants, when you play with the Corporation Cards there are 3 others (one steel, one titan and two money production), but i think most of you don´t saw them ;)

    • @TorIverWilhelmsen
      @TorIverWilhelmsen Před 7 lety

      Yeah, five plant production busters (Fish, Herbivores, Biomass Combustors, Small Animals and one double, Birds) in the standard deck; the Corporate Era deck has five more: Two energy (Energy Tapping, Power Supply Consortium), one money (Hackers), one steel (Great Escarpment Consortium) and one titanium (Asteroid Mining Consortium). The Corporate Era deck also has far more cards geared towards removing or stealing resources.

    When you saw just a half of the cards in a 5 Player game of Terraforming Mars, you did something wrong !!!
    (10 start cards * 5 players plus 4 per generation * 5 players * 10 generation maybe less: is 200 to 250 cards) so you have to play all of them (208) !!!

    Is El dorado a bit like Clank?

    • @zottirgen
      @zottirgen Před 7 lety

      Yes it's a deck building and racing game but you only go forward and try to finish the track first

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 Před 7 lety

      Zottirgen Unlike Clank the cards you buy don't give you points to help you win. They may help decide a tie but basically all they do is help you move and it's first to the end that wins.
      There's no "well I won't finish first but at least I'll have more points in hand" decision such as you get in Clank. It would be like Clank if all you had to do in Clank was reach the lowest point in the board and then get out first.

    Would love to see Aaron's thoughts on Queendomino when it comes out. I adore Kingdomino, and it's much more thinky at 2 players with the 7x7 grid version. I think Queendomino will be a fun one based on everything I've seen.

  • @martinlarouche4418
    @martinlarouche4418 Před 7 lety +1

    Would not play Terraforming with the draft. Part of the point is that they represent innovations. You might hope for a specific innovation to come your way, like microbes useful for terraforming... but you might never come accross them, forcing you to adapt to what you get. Letti g you draft would serve no thematic purpose as you get to pick and choose what you can discover. If you want to go down a path, you probably will be able to as almost the entire deck will go through your hands at some point.
    Adjusting and adapting is more fun than just picking and choosing, because after a few plays, you'll keep playing the same way every game. Not drafting makes you play more different cards each game.
    Also, while your corp might not do a lot of Terraforming, the game presents you with other paths to victory with related tasks. What Lincoln complains about being able to win while not doing any actual terraforming, i see as a plus to the game. Get points by putting spaceships and being a police corp? Bring pets into martian households? Put livestock on mars? Those are all activities that are part of making mars habitable for humans. You're not terraforming the planet per se, but you are definitely contributing to making it hospitable for humans... which is the same thi g at the end.

  • @trdi
    @trdi Před 7 lety +1

    I have to say that from these 6 games I'd ever want to play only two, Terraforming Mars and Eldorado. The rest looks pretty meh to me. Exit the room games are in my opinion much better in digital format. It's a big problem to play these games with many players as usually there will always be someone dominating and someone else will not be able to contribute anything. It doesn't even mean that one is a genius and the other is mentally challenged. All you need is just one person to be SLIGHTLY faster than the other and the fun is over. I would never want to play such games unless soloing. I've seen some of these puzzles they've included in the games, and they are way too easy, no challenge at all. No doubt that they did it to make sure everyone feels smart while playing it. Too much compromising going on.
    With that said, the games the jury picked were not the two I mentioned. I don't think that the award is really important, especially because it's not clear to me what the criteria is. I don't think anyone knows and that is the main weakness of the award.

    Terraforming mars: one of the most overrated games of all time
    Kingdomino: amazing light gateway game
    Magic maze: terrible, no idea why it was made
    Quest for el dorado: good with 2 players but very little replayability
    Exit: who cares
    Raiders: clearly the best game, and its even better with the expansions
