Proto-punk in 1965, and still proto-punk in 1970. This was pretty much how The Who performed "My Generation" from the late 60's up til the mid 70's. It starts with "My Generation", but then weaves in sections of 'Tommy', some themes intended for the 'Lifehouse' project, and even a bit of what would eventually become the song "The Naked Eye". It was intended to be completely open ended, where Pete was allowed to play whatever came to him. But The Who were *so* mentally in sync by 1970 that no matter how long this went on they rarely went off the rails.

Great choice, great reaction! I saw this line-up three times, including in August 1969 and July 1970. They laid waste to the competition each time. Zeppelin gets way more attention than it deserves in reaction videos compared to the almighty Who! Townshend was a song-writing genius as well. And yeah, that is "Sparks" in the medley section.

Yeah, back in the day, my buddy was a pretty good drummer and I borrowed my older brothers electric guitar and we did that down in his parents basement once. We really got into it. At one point, to me, he became Keith Moon! He was killing it. He had that nervous energy that made him perfect for drums, and he was so happy that I could at least imitate Pete Townsend on guitar. It just felt so damn good! We must have been alright. It brought my buddy’s younger sister downstairs to check us out! She said we sounded really good. In a sense that was one of the best moments I’ve had. Thank you Who!

Lee, The Who often improvised this track at the end of the set. To prove my point listen to My Generation at the following night`s show at Hull City Hall on 15th Feb `70. I dont mean on here of course but privately. The reason I suggest this is twofold first of all the nuances proving they dont play it note for note every night. Secondly you`re a drummer and Keith`s drums are higher in the mix than the Leeds set. It is to the slight detriment of the guitar and bass but being a drummer I thought you might enjoy Keith`s performance.

In terms of pure entertainment value, The Who live are basically untouchable.
There are sections of this where Pete's using an echoplex, which, if you listen to the James Gang live at Carnegie Hall you'll hear Joe using some of the same riffs. He actually credited Pete on the liner from the Third s album, so I'm sure they met up somewhere along the way.

I saw the Who every time they came to NYC from their very first USA performance under the auspices of Murray the K (along with Cream's first in the USA) through to their performance of Tommy at Madison Square Garden. What no video or recording can ever capture is the sheer power of the wall of sound that those three instruments produced. It was overwhelming. Also, watching Pete from below his level (rather than a camera at his level or above) gave his onstage moves--the jumps, the windmills--almost a kind of bizarre majesty. They were at the Fillmore East the night Dr. King was assassinated and performed A Quick One--when they got to the line "You are forgiven", Pete aimed his guitar at the audience, like a machine gun as he sang the line again and again, and somehow it became an engine of forgiveness.

The WHO recorded EVERY DATE on this short tour and ended up with about 100+ hours to choose from. He assigned their tour manager to sort through for the best to put on the album. He handed Pete a list ten pages long and they started listening and after a while Pete stopped the whole thing and said “Fuck it- let’s go to Hull and Leeds and take what we get”. Pridden(?) asked what Pete wanted to do with the other reels… “Pile ‘em up and burn ‘em all” Pete later regretted that decision.

I happened to be at this concert at Leeds. I have seen the Who 46 times and if you watch them live Pete and Keith feed of each other. It usually is the Drummer and Bass player that feed of each other. I don't know about y'all but in my opinion Keith plays his drums like a LEAD GUITAR!!!! For real think about.

Great song, great band! Next, check out "A Quick One, While He's Away." It is a 1966 song in six movements written by Pete Townshend and recorded by the Who for their second album A Quick One. The live version is awesome too. Be prepared, it’s very unique. ✌️

Love this version. They segue into material from their rock opera Tommy. This is the best live recording bar none, in my opinion. I especially love the version of ‘Young Man Blues’ that is on this album. Thanks for your great channel. Cheers!!

Great live performance although the Woodstock performance of Listening to You and See Me Feel Me is outstanding.

This "My Generation medley" was an on/off feature of Who gigs from 1969 to 1981. It didn't always have the Tommy excerpts, but (a bit like Dazed and Confused) it served as a skeleton on which to hang the current crop of spare riffs and works-in-progress. In '68 there was at least one infamous version where they kept it going for half an hour (and only succeeded in showing Pete's limitations as a soloist).
For what it's worth, this one is edited in spots - the full length version is here czcams.com/video/h9r_AOTNJFg/video.html

You can hear the rudiments of later completed songs like "Naked Eye" in this extended jam.

If memory serves, I bought this, ELP's Tarkus and Poco's Deliverin' on the same high school haul. For live, hard to beat. Genesis' "Seconds Out" and ELP's "Welcome Back My Friends..." are among the rare exceptions, I would peradventure.

Had this 8-track in the early 80's. Yes you heard a little bit of "Sparks" in there. 👍🏻 A lot of great riffs in there!
