The first thing we did after moving onto our homestead three years ago was plant fruit trees. This year we had our first crop of usable apples for pies and stuff. Your place is looking great.

We have been milking our A2A2 jersey for almost 3 years now. People think we are crazy. I think we are the lucky ones. We have grown our jersey herd from 1 to 3 and I am hoping to use our intact jersey bull to breed our two jersey girls. Love seeing this content! How many acres do you have? Beautiful place!
Thatâs wonderful! I think you guys are amazing for milking your own cow. A2 milk has allowed me to drink milk again. We have 26 acres! About 6 of those is forest.

For your newly planted tree, it'll be beneficial if you stabilize it by tying it down, just until the roots are embedded into the ground. If you dont, the tree will just tip over, bc there isn't anything to hold it into the ground. It gets windy in winter. Just a tip. Thanks for sharing.

There is a dairy around Wooster Ohio and/or Orville Ohio's where they have A2A2 milk! I grew up with a milk cow. When we go visit my son in South Carolina we bring back milk that is much better than Ohio store milk. Jerseys are great cows. Nowadays, dairy cows are not bred to have meat on their bones. When you transplant trees, especially tall ones, you should stake them for a few years so the roots can take hold and protect the tree from high winds. Your hole should be twice as big as the root ball so the roots have an easy time spreading out. I enjoy what I have seen on your videos!!!

I have chrons disease, which makes me sensitive to lactose, a doctor recommended a2 a2,. I tried..no pain... Great....maybe you should be tested for chrons

New subscriber. You have a very nice place. Transplanting trees can be a hit and miss even when you do every thing right. One rule donât put the fill soil over the original height of the soil when the was growing in the woods. We live in the South so we transplant a little later in the fall. I am looking at doing the same process with my future dairy herd. I will definitely be watching yâallâs future videos.

Well one thing is certain in northern Kentucky you have a huge selection of trees to choose from. I tended to plant mast trees but then I enjoy wild life around my place.
We are still learning which trees we want to plant. We want a lot of nut and fruit trees as well

As far as I know you have to dig a hole twice as deep and large for the roots to spread and to stake it. Good job.

And the beginning for about the first year if you water it about 20 minutes every day and go outside the root ball so that the roots have to go and search for the water that'll give you a good base if you'd be surprised how fast that tree will grow

I would pull the compost back from the base of the tree. They prefer to be bare at the point the roots turn out. I like to keep the original ground profile. You are doing a great job.

I would halter train the milk cow. Good for handling them later. Also can tie up in a narrow stall and let calves suck until both get used to each other.
Great advice! We started Halter training and Stanchion training her a couple weeks ago!
Are you going to build nesting boxes, or put any hay in the pens for the eggs?
the tree you transplanted you need to "tie the tree" put three posts in the triangle away from the root ball - and the cheapest way to tie the tree to the posts (metal or wood) is women's stockings they are flexible and will rot off over the next 3-4 years when they tree does not need to be tied anymore and will not cut into the tree while it is growing

fall is not the time to transplant a tree, Spring is, when the tree is waking up and has time to establish its self before winter.
The best time of the year to transplant trees and plants is autumn. This is because of cool temperatures and warm moist soil. Plants also require less energy as they begin to enter the early stages of dormancy. They are no longer focusing on above ground growth. We will be transplanting some trees in spring as well!
A2 A2 milk. The best and so good for you. Itâs a shame that milk cows are not the âsameâ as the ones from my childhood.

Amen! Bad breeding practice by the dairy companies a long time ago started breeding out A2
Maybe try transplanting a smaller tree also see how it compares to the big one you just planted next summer. . Smaller trees are easier to dig and less shock for the tree as you would be cutting away fewer roots. I find the black cherry trees here (Minnesota) transplant pretty well and you mentioned you have cherry trees also. You may need a plastic tube on the trunk of smaller trees to keep them safe from bucks rubbing their horns ( have to assume you have deer running around also).
Great advice! We do have deer but on the back end of the property. None by the house yet! I think we have too many animals/dogs for them to come this close!
I think you needed to plant it a little bit over the ball of the tree @ u need to steak it on both sides do the hole before u dig out your tree spend at least two days on that project đ

farmers plant fruit trees and berry bushes in the fall - not in the spring they need to much water to get started to plant at that time of the year and the losses are to high unless you have a irrigation system in place to water them every other day in the summer - for small scale homesteading like you are doing the growers of these trees are having sales in the fall - you also pick the tiny fruit off the tree when they have just formed for the first 3 years so the tree puts it efforts into getting established not growing fruit
Great advice! We are pretty lucky, it actually rains more in June/July/august then it does in the fall. Spring gets a good amount of rain as well. Grass really kicks it into high gear in the summer!

We have started our own Jersey Dairy Milk Herd. They are all A2/A2. I have several Lactose Intolerant people that buy our milk. Its in demand. I cant keep it in stock.

@@ThePasturedHomestead I am located just across the river in Indiana (Dillsboro IN to be exact). I do have a dedicated Herd Share. Herd shares are a gray area but sales of Raw Milk are illegal unless you have a license to sell it as Pet Milk and which we do. I think its all BS, its just another way for the state to get your money. I pay $100 a year to have that license. I like my herd share but I am leaning more towards just offering it all as pet milk cause we cant keep it in stock. Its sold pretty much the day we milk and even have a list of people wanting.

I don't see a need for the halter on the cow while in the pasture. If she gets caught on something it could prove disastrous. MHO.

We are close to Winchester! The A2 milk cows are hard to find! We didnt know ours was A2 till we tested her. Jerseys have a 65% chance of being A2

I grew up on A2 milk and there is nothing like it. I canât stand store bought milk so I just donât drink it now because I donât know anyone with a dairy now to get raw milk and Iâm in Va so, itâs illegal to buy raw đ€Šââïžđ

Its illegal to buy raw milk here as well but you can however be apart of a "herd share", this is where you own a small portion of an animal and you pay a monthly or weekly fee to receive milk from "your" cow. Its a wonderful loop hole. Sadly food freedom now days requires loop holes... The USDA doesn't protect people anymore, they only hurt them...

I think itâs a shame what has been done to the diary /farming industry because what is produced now by these big corporations is not good for us/. Growing up, both sides of my family had farms and had Guernseyâs and and Jerseyâs, I miss the fresh milk so much. My great grandfather used to be the one of a hand full of suppliers of delivery for milk in Washington County, Virginia a few decades ago. Stories of great grandmother helping deliver in their Model T. My family got out of farming in the late 80âs as things starting changingđ

Are you going to try your hand at cheese making with yourA2 milk? Would cheese from A2 milk have less digestive problems for people that are lactose intolerant than A1?
We will 100% make cheese, yogurt, butter and cottage cheese once we start milking! I would assume that A2 cheese would be easier for people to digest as well!
I was taught that when doing trees to chop the topsoil with the grass put it aside then put it in the bottom of the hole as fertilizer for the tree by a guy that has a large fruit tree buisness should work on others i would think

Transplant smaller trees. They are easier to reestablish. And not so much work to get out of the ground.

Very interesting hearing about the A1 and A2 quality of milk. Hopefully the young bull that you have will test for A2 quality as well. Don't know if you are familiar with the You Tube channel "More Than Farmers"? Codi and his family have a small Homestead with a Jersey milk cow called Maddie. They have some interesting videos that you may enjoy and learn from.
Why is everything so scattered out?
Like your shop looks like it is a half mile from your house.
The shop used to be a sawmill when it was owned by the Amish. I can imagine they wanted it farther from the house because of noise and dust. The other big barn was a calving barn so I imagine they wanted to keep any smell from the house.

The Jersey bull is related to the other Jersey calf we have.

you are wanting silvopasture - have you thought about growing acorn trees - really easy to grow and look up on youtube "growing acorns from seed" great to finish pigs on and really easy to do and maybe another income earner selling off seedlings at 3 years old - you just need to find someone with acorns on the ground and go and pick them up
