  • What is A2 milk? How do you test cows for this? Here we talk about the genetics of A2 and how that affects some consumers who have trouble drinking milk. We also go through our journey of testing our own cows to find out if they will produce A2 milk next year.

    I’m glad you’re doing this bc I can only drink a2 milk. Regular milk really upsets my stomach but I’m not lactose intolerant.

    Thank you for sharing all of these videos! My husband and I are working towards a dairy farm in southern Minnesota, similarly structured to yours. Thank you for sharing all of this information, it's very helpful to those that hope to follow in your footsteps and get started!

    That’s amazing! Thank you for the explanation. My 3 year old can only have A2. When she was a baby we went through hell trying to figure out what was wrong with her because she wouldn’t poop for two weeks. Finally we figured out it was dairy both in my diet when breast feeding, and in formula later on. We got her on coconut milk after a lot of struggle with that translation but she always sipped on our older child’s milk. Finding A2 was a life saver.

    I get really severe inflammatory responses to some milks and not others. For instance the target brand organic milk I can tolerate really well on the other hand this brand called clover messed me up. I’m wondering if it has to do with their cows Milk genes

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 5 lety

    I purchased two jerseys heifer calves for home dairy cows. At what age do you breed them for the first time?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 3 lety

      We breed so when they calve they are no younger than 24 months old. We recommend you check out the book “Raising a Dairy Heifer Successfully”. There is a lot of good information in there.

    Hmm, just a question...will you be selling your milk to a processing plant or marketing it yourself? But more importantly, will you make ice cream and/or gelato?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 5 lety +1

      We will have a processing room on the farm and have fluid whole milk, chocolate milk, and eggnog as well as yogurt and maybe cheese. We did think about ice cream, but maybe later.

    • @Steve-ps6qw
      @Steve-ps6qw Před 5 lety

      I'm a big fan of Chocolate milk and eggnog is good too (non alcoholic or?)On cheese, the hard cheeses that take forever to make or soft/farmer's cheese? Funny thing about that soft cheese, I thought it was only a Spanish thing but apparently every culture has and uses soft (farmers cheese). My mother was born and raised in Germany, on a farm, and they had it as well, they call it quarg or quark...or something like that...sounds kind of disgusting....oh, speaking of gross...don't make the German Hand Kase...that reeks beyond anything you have ever smelled. I have an aunt that eats that at restaurants...it should be illegal. It is horrid!! Apparently it is regional, my mothers family is from Frankfurt, Hesse.

    Will an A2/A2 mother and father cow only produce A2/A2 calf’s?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 4 lety +1

      Lisa Nowakow Great question! Yes, if both the Sire and the Dam are A2/A2, then the offspring will be A2/A2 as well. Thanks for watching!

  • @Steve-ps6qw
    @Steve-ps6qw Před 5 lety +1

    I bought some lactose free milk last week and was wondering if that meant it was A2. But now I realize it is something different. Lactose is a sugar, all things ending in "ose" are sugars like fructose and sucrose....and A2 is an amino acid, the building blocks for protein...so they are totally different. Anyway, that milk tasted so good, almost like it was half and half!!I really look forward to moving up north asap. We just experienced a small fire at our house on 7 April and today is 23 April and we still have no power. The electrical system was fixed the day after the fire and there is no structural damage but the horrible county government in all its bureaucracy still hasn't given the green light for us to have power. This is why big government is bad...its not for the people but for itself, a sort of self licking ice cream cone (which is sad because I really like ice cream)....Sorry for the rant, but I really cant wait to leave this third world country (miami, fl) and move north where there is rule of law.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 5 lety

      There is a lot of confusion about milk and lactose and A2. I hope this video helped clear up the A2 part a bit. We are still learning, but I broke it down to the simplest way I thought I could. Sorry to hear about the fire! Hope things get better soon.

    • @Steve-ps6qw
      @Steve-ps6qw Před 5 lety

      You did a great job on breaking it down. And the fire has served as a catalyst, lol, to get us to move sooner. We will be your distant neighbor (about an hour and a half away!)

    Was the testing very expensive?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 4 lety

      I believe it was $15 per heifer, but you had to get a packet of the blot paper cards from Neogen first. I don't think they were that expensive. It was nice to get definitive answers for ourselves and future customers. Thanks!

    So, if you have A2-A2 cows and you breed to A2-A2 bulls will you always get only A/-A2 offspring?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 5 lety +4

      Yes! So, since our 4 heifers tested A2A2 we will breed to an A2A2 bull and won't need to retest offspring.

    A2 cows supposed to have a hump and I don’t see the hump in your cows. A2 cows have flaps between the neck and curve back.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před rokem +2

      A2 cows can be any breed. And not all cows of a particular breed can be A2. Some breeds have a higher likelihood of being A2, but the only way to know for sure is through genetic testing.

  • @medronhos
    @medronhos Před 3 lety

    Hum... I thought A2 cows have that big bump under the neck?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 3 lety +1

      The only way to distinguish an A2 from an A1 cow is through genetics testing. Cows from the same breed can be either or. Hope you found our video useful! Thanks for watching!

    • @roobaba5415
      @roobaba5415 Před 2 lety

      Not fully true. All Buffaloes, Goats, Sheep and even humans have A2 milk just like Indian cows. Only european cow breeds have A1 and A2 mix, with some being nearly all A1.
