- When you have a lot of milk in the spring and summer, but not a lot during the winter months, it's great to be able to have a way to preserve that fresh milk so you can enjoy it all year round!
By freezing and freeze-drying milk, you'll be able to enjoy fresh milk whenever you want.

I had a sweet, little, old lady in the grocery store tell me years ago to add a teensy pinch of salt before I freeze milk. I started doing that and it has thawed perfectly with delicious taste ever since! I love people who share their wisdom with perfect strangers! Love your channel!!
Do you a pinch for every quart? I’d love to know.
@@eo9337 My guess is per container rather than by-the-quart.
@@rrbb36 Thank you. I’ll try that.
I didn't know about the salt, but I love freezing milk (unfortunately no access to raw milk) in tall narrow glass bottles I bought on Amazon. The thawing time is less, and I make sure it thaws IN the refrigerator. I will try shaking or blending a little to see if it improves, but we think it tastes just like it did when we bought it. My sis has a freeze drier, but it has not appealed to me yet.
@@rrbb36how much is a container
😄 The girls botched the experiment. That was hilarious. They are so precious.
They are precious indeed. But l trust the boy's judgment.
The truth comes out of the mouths of babes.
The girls got the jars mixed up. The one they pointed to was marked #1.
I have 2 miniature Jersey cows and I'm breeding them on staggered schedules so I should have milk all year round. I've been raising dairy goats for 20 years so I'm frequently drowning in milk. I make all the dairy products for my family, I love making cheese to share & enjoy. I also make soaps and lotions with my milk!
How long can you milk them before you have to stop or do they just dry up ?
I have been freezing whole milk for years, and years. You can shake it or even use a blender to get the smooth texture after thawing. No change in flavor
Do you take away the cream on top?
@@Simplinalina absolutely not! That extra fat is actually good for your body. Especially for growing children.
Game changer! Thanks. I’m so tired of all the extra appliances!
Thank you showing how little ones never go with the expected results. You could have cut it but you showed real life. That is perfection!
In fact the kids point at the jar labeled #1, they just put it back in the wrong order.
@@Philippe620 Oh, you're right! I didn't catch that the first time I watched it. Two of them pointed to the fresh milk and one to the freeze dried.
When I was a little boy my family lived in northern Michigan and a lot of times we stayed at my uncle's farm ,and I can tell you I was so healthy drinking raw milk as compared to when we moved back to the city and started eating and drinking crappy foods , I for one say stay at your farm and keep eating and drinking all the good stuff like that milk you have.
Do u refrigerate raw milk
@@adhikariindia yes and it can be powdered ez as well , and unlike homogenized milk that get rotten you can use sour milk in different foods.
Had your family tried freezing the raw milk? If so, how long did it last in the freezer?
Amen 🙏
@@rachels8065 yeah my mom and aunt would freeze it and if the cream was still in the milk it could be eaten like ice cream and was very very good I think there was a bottle of frozen milk that was in the freezer for a year or two and it was still very good, oh yeah a glass bottle not plastic that's another key to great raw milk , plastic has so many chemicals in it that leaks in the milk and even other food I recycle all my plastic long ago because it is just bad for you.
I froze milk for years, in quart containers, the trick to returning the fat to 'normal' is to let the milk warm up to warm -room temperature (body temp) then shake it and refrigerate it again.
How long did it last frozen and was it raw?
I remember my mom freezing gallon jugs of milk when we lived overseas.
That brings back memories:) . My mom did that too...... also powdered milk. We were stationed in Japan from 1965-68
@@mayapplecottagefarm4237 my dad was stationed in Misawa Japan. We were there from 1974 thru 1977. I was there for 4th-6th grades. Dad was in the Air Force. I remember mom using powder milk and evaporated milk in a pinch.

@@CelticLady01 I will check out the chocolate covered almonds on Amazon:) My mom went on a lot of day trips I was too little to go but I will ask her about those places:) I remember the Buddha of Kamakura. When I was a kid my folks would freeze homogenized milk. It was never the same. We always had to shake the container before drinking it. I remember we also drank powdered milk which if reconstituted properly actually tasted better that the frozen milk. Ice cold of course!
We have been using our freeze dryer for everything. Raw eggs, milk, yogurt, soups, pastas, and our garden is starting to come on. Your tutorials are always really helpful.
Do you cream your milk or freeze dry it with all the cream in it?
@@kendragiles9869 I'm wondering the same thing because we just got an over abundance of milk.
I'd LOVE a video about your freeze drier! I've been so curious about them, and it completely makes sense why you and your fam would get great use out of one on the farm. :)
Check out retired at 40. He’s got tons of great freeze dryer videos including one titled should I get a freeze dryer.
I absolutely love mine though. There’s nothing better than just adding hot water to a bag during a hike or camping trip and getting a home cooked chemical free meal. Good luck!
@@cgc1581 already binging his videos 😂 love that man
Oh my gosh!! Now I want a freeze dryer 🤣. I wish I could just sit down for an afternoon with you. You inspire me to do so many things!!
Pressure canning milk is easy and great. I actually like canning raw whole milk. Flavor is delicious
Have canned milk perfect that's 6 years old. Whole milk does best. 4 pints in an instant pot. Butter cans well too.
We always had frozen milk when I was a kid. I still shake the container as a result.
BTW, cute little girls.
Our family is being so blessed by watching and learning so much from you! Prices here in Hawai'i are insane! This has been helping us so much! Thank you thank you thank you! Stay blessed! 🙏❤
Every house built should come with a water cooled and propane fueled whole house backup generator, a full array of solar panels, and a freeze dryer, a high quality unit that would last you 20 years, because buying those items individually is so freaking expensive, you really need to roll them into the cost of a new house.
What if you live somewhere that solar doesn't make any sense?
Some places don't get enough sunlight and other places the electricity is so cheap and plentiful, the panels would never pay themselves off before they were useless.
Also, what if you live somewhere that a generator doesn't really make sense?
In South Florida a lot of neighborhoods have their power lines buried because it makes them stormproof.
If you live somewhere that never loses electricity. It would take the power company not being able to purchase fuel to stop your electricity.. and if they can't get fuel then you can't get fuel for your generator.
At best you would be buying yourself a few days depending on the size of your tank.
Lastly. There are people who are just never going to preserve their own food.
They're not producing any of their own food. So unless they go to the store and buy things , to just then dehydrate them and then store them, it doesn't make any sense.
Once again if stores don't have food, you only have a small amount of time, before you're out of it. And God forbid, the people in your neighborhood, figure out you have food, when they run out.
So in reality you should have included all houses should come with a fully stocked armory as well, to defend your resources when others are without.
Because like Bill Burr the comedian says otherwise you're just collecting supplies for the toughest guy on the block
Everyone needs to do as they need it, but it is time to go to more solar, water and windcraft. And it is always good to know how to grow and store food. Always in the way it is right for the place you live in. Some would not be so careless with everything if they had to grow it them selfs.
I understand totally what you're saying, I can't rely on electricity where I live. So freezing anything is out of the question for me. But FYI during the great depression in North Central America in the 30s it wasn't the zombies you had to deal with it was the government they took your silver, they took your gold. I don't know if you're like me I can't afford an armory that'll hold off the government. But I can deal with a thief or two.
Hmm great idea....perhaps one can capitalize on a business of making completely self sufficient tiny homes or something like that. Then you buy the home with all the goodies :)
The contractor would have to demand a substantial down payment seriously! I have seen people come into a home with little or no down then strip the house and walk away; too many con artists and dishonest people out there.
Thank you for sharing. Loved seeing your wonderful children participate in the flavor testing!
Amazing! Well done! Congrats on your new preservation method and machine!
Very well mannered boys. Cute
We freeze our cows milk in extra jars placed inside zip locks(incase they break, then reuse the bags for the next batch). If you leave an inch or so of head space it doesn't break, but still good to do to be safe. And do not screw the lid on tight just incase it expands more than the head room given.
We freeze it unskimmed (sometimes our girl gives us >30% cream), defrost in the fridge the day before use, then place in the blender on high until combined.
The blending combines the fat and skim milk wonderfully and tastes nearly as fresh as it does from the cow. It will froth a fair bit so leave ample headspace.
We cannot afford a freeze dryer in the near future and really do not like plastic (that isn't HDPE or P.P.) touching our food.
This has worked great for us so far.
LOVE your channel and all of the info your provide to us.
Thank you SO much Homestead Family!
You are a beautiful and inspiring woman!
I had a jar of chicken broth I canned and froze and the jar broke even though I did everything correctly!
@@chera3467 I had that happen to me a couple of times (with milk). As far as I could tell it was always due to not leaving enough head room. If it's nearly all water (chicken broth, milk) it could have expanded more than expected. Just a drop too much is all it takes. Maybe leave an inch and a half and see if that's better?
May I ask why you are freezing the broth if you've already canned it? If it's to preserve the broth and they're in jars but not pressure canned, try leaving the lids loose to allow escape if it's too full. One could place in a pot or big container to catch any liquid that drips. If they are properly pressure canned, you shouldn't need to freeze them. Hope this helps!
Thank you for posting this!! How long did your raw milk last in freezer? 6-9 months at least?
This process is so amazing!! I loved your tip of freezing the milk in a ziplock too because I often loose milk at home! Never wasting milk ever again! Thank you so much 🥰🥰 I am new to your channel, me and my husband are planning to move to a farm sooner or later and I will definitely use many tips in your channel to live a happy new life! I have been canning milk for some time and after 1 year I still like it very much.
You just added to the list of pros for a feeeze dryer.
We love ours. Which reminds me I need to put it to use again.
Hey loved the video... My daughter Elizabeth was watching the video with me and we wish you would show more with your children... Thank you. We love your channel.
Oh man... I always prefreeze everything. I am glad you love your freeze dryer as much as I do.
I prefreeze too. I made the mistake of not prefreezing raw eggs and ended up cleaning the machine for hours afterwards 😂 plus it shaved off tons of time with equals $$$ and time for more batches
You can remove ALL the air from the freezer bag by dragging it down through a tub of water as you carefully seal the top. At least, that's how I "vacuum seal" cuts of meat before freezing.
What an awesome family! The woman makin’ these videos is so doggone likable. If y’all lived nearby then I’d love to be your friends.
I do really enjoy watching your shows!
When you said "in our family we share cups" you reminded me when my son was around 4 he started not sharing his cups or mugs, he'd get really upset if his siblings had used it or were drinking from it in front of him. My idea to save his frustration was to have all same cups and glasses for the whole family so he won't throw a fit when they'd use each others cups, mugs or glasses. It really worked right away.
Btw great video, I just found you, I'd give anything to have some of that farm fresh milk. 🤤
Excellent video! I'm looking for our family to be more self sufficient, I believe these will come in handy. Subscribed ❤
Thank you girls. We appreciate your input. So cute. Want a beautiful home and beautiful family. YOU are VERY blessed ....😇
Ah yes, I remember I bought natural milk and I had too much so I just froze all of it and kept taking out as the previous bottle was emptying. Was an amazing way to save my milk!!
Your kids are so adorable!
Freeze drying is such an awesome concept. I bought a freeze dried ice cream sandwich from walmart in the camping section. I wasnt big on the texture cuz it was like chewing chaulk but flavor wise it was so good!! I also absolutely love freeze dried fruit!! Wish i could afford to get a freeze dryer
Grateful for you and your content! 🤍🖤 🙏
Always great videos thank you...here in South Carolina I pick up raw milk 4 gallons at a time and I freeze them...i drink a gallon a week so to thaw the milk I just put it in the refrigerator and in about a week the milk is thawed and taste fresh no issues with the cream..😊
Really liked this video. Long time subscriber and upvoter of this channel. Thanks again. 👍
This video really amazes me! I really want a freeze dryer one day. Thank you so much for sharing this video.
I have been looking a freeze dryer for months. You just sold me! Going to take the plunge to buy one.
Thank you so much Carolyne. And I am a proud founder member of the School of Traditional Skills.💪😁.
I love that you preserve the really important things... we have to have our lattes !! 🥰
This is truth.
They have gallon sized silicone bags. The top is pressed together and holds up great just in the fridge and freezes wonderfully. Reusable boil able and nice sized.
This channel is amazing!
Best children ever.
First of all, you look beautiful! Now, can I tell you how happy I am to see your kids?! They are all so sweet!!! Love the older guys! Hahaha the non-conclusive little girl trio was hysterical!!! Thank you!
Thanks for the videos! I really enjoy them. I have a freeze dryer also. Have used it so many times over the last 5 years. I put up all our extra eggs. Lots of dairy. With milk and eggs you can fill those trays up to the top and it drys just as well as it does with your half full trays. If you fill them up all the way you can put up more milk.
Couple things, first, if you put the trays in your freezer and fill them you can pre-freeze and shorten the cycle time on the dryer. Second, if you take the rack out of the dryer, flip a tray upside down and put the jars in with the rings loose close the door and go in to the test settings you can test the vacuum pump and get a lot more air out of the jars than the jar attachment for a vacuum sealer.
I tried this but when we started to get warm (I don't have ac) my seals popped.
@@wendyhoff Then you either had lids with bad gaskets or there was something between the glass and the gasket preventing the seal. I have had this happen but it is always because of something either with the lid or something that got on the edge of the jar while I was filling it.
Love your videos, always great info... thx
Love this! Thank you so much for another great idea!
They are adorable.
The pressure method, under very great pressure, 3500psi for 10 mins, all bacteria squashed, then stored in sterialized containers like fruit bottling. Said lasts Indefinately .No freezing needed. Easy to get this type of pressure equipment. Used this to get to 10,000psi to test hydraulic hoses.
This was such a lovely video! 🤍
I am so glad you got in on the freeze dryer . we have 2 if them live ut
beautiful family, thank you for the video
This makes me want a freeze dryer!
I enjoyed your video very much. We just got a freeze dryer about 2 1/2 months ago and have been loving it. It’s just me and my husband that I am freeze drying for my three daughters household also. I do the same thing with milk we don’t have a cow but we do buy raw milk 2 gallons a week. And as soon as we cut back because that’s too much for us we run short. And we don’t like doing that to our milk lady. So I have been freeze drying milk and eggs. I also make up my cold Summer coffee and freeze dry that. All I have to do is add water, milk and ice. ButI think I’m going to make a batch already made up freeze dried and then all I have to do is add cold water and ice. Once again thank you for the video.
I have been freeze drying Goats Milk and it has been great for cooking. I haven’t used it for drinking yet.
Your property is AMAZING. Akin to my dream home

Love Latah idea
I freeze milk from store in gallon jug. To thaw, set out all day and warm in pan til fat melts and combines with milk.
I freeze full milk in plastic bottles, which I use over and over again. After it defrosts i just hake it on the bottle real good.
Would love to see a farm tour.
Great video!
I’m a milk lover, so it’s great to learn about preserving it ..not that I would ever not drink enough & have any left to preserve.
I love the latte idea too!
One question.. the whole milk being fat-clumpy after freezing, would using a blender before drinking help that out?
Love this! I can’t wait to get my freeze dryer and make instant lattes:D
Awesome. Freeze drying sounds awesome. Now on to find one🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
I just saw one at a Farm and Home store, it was over $1000 don't remember the exact cost.
Here is the Harvest Right brand like she has :
harvestright.com/home-freeze-dryers/
I can’t wait to get a freeze dryer.
I can goats milk at 180 degrees for 30 minutes. But when i use it i always add kefir grains and then drink. Very good product.
I can see Im going to have to invest in a freeze drier. Thanks for your awesome videos. 💙🌎✌
I wish I afford a freeze dryer!
For now, I freeze milk in qt jars. The trick is to lean the jars at an angle so the jars don't break. Also don't totally fill the jars.
I too noticed that fresh milk balls up when thawed. Warming it or straining the fat globules off works for me. Right now, I have to buy my milk so there is not problem.
That’s awesome!!
Three girls and three answers... LOL They are adorable.
I want one so much!
In Canada we have milk in bags. It's sold 3 bags for a totaling 4 Lliters in another bag. I have frozen bags and the texture was great thawing the milk in the frdge.
Babies drink frozen, thawed milk all of the time. I exclusively pumped for my first, and her first year was supplemennted with frozen milk from my oversupply those first few months. Frozen milk is a great way!
The very best way to store fresh milk is by pressure canning.
Fill your jars just as would with any canned produce, seal in your canner, bring the pressure up to 12 lbs and IMMEDIATELY turn off the heat.
Let the milk cool completely inside the canner and you're done!
The milk will keep indefinitely in your pantry, and it tastes exactly like fresh.
It will not taste like store bought canned or condensed milk unless you over process it!
Of course, just as in canning anything, you must be sure the individual jars have sealed properly, but by following the correct technique, this won't be an issue.
I have canned GALLONS of fresh milk over the years and have NEVER had a single failure...in fact, I am just finishing up using goat and cow milk that I canned 4 years ago...it's just as fresh and delicious as the day it was squeezed from the udders!
If you do that too raw milk you’re killing the whole idea behind drinking raw milk and are wasting money and nutrients just go buy the crappy milk in the store that’s already pasteurized and don’t double pasteurize your milk lol
Oh man. I did not need another reason to invest in the Harvest Right. My husband's going to flip his lid. Haha! Cannot wait to get my own freeze drier!
I don't have room to freeze, so I give my milk to the horses every day (plus some back to the goat, and visiting cats) and th horses LOVE it.
This video could NOT come at a better time! We finally bought our own Harvest Right, as a means to put away some of the food we grow that isn't as suitable to canning. We thought it might help with extra eggs. (Though we just had a severe heat wave go through and sadly lost over half of our birds despite all our efforts to cool them. So maybe it won't be an issue now 😭)
We have very limited pantry space, so anything that can be stored elsewhere is a help. We have a deep freezer, but after a problem last summer caused us to lose a bunch of time/hard work and ultimately food and money, we knew we had to find some other options. If drought and other costs keep increasing, a food loss like that again might mean big trouble. And we certainly couldn't take frozen food with us if wildfires got worse this year and we needed to evacuate. We don't currently have dairy animals, and with the size of our place we'd be lucky to have a couple goats or sheep, but knowing that we could preserve the milk long term (and still enjoy it, lol) definitely makes a difference in the pros/cons of evaluating if it's feasible for our family.
Please keep the freeze drying videos coming! Thanks for all you do.
Amazing video
Thank you 😇🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I wish I had this in my life..id make so much butter..I remember grahams making curds..I don't exactly know how they took curds later and then made cream cheese and various other dairy things..I just remember the curds
Ok so only 1 kid left at home who lives mostly on takeout (indecent working teen)....and you made me want to get a freeze dryer!
It's funny I've actually considered moving out of state more than once this year just because I can't buy raw milk in my state. It's illegal
Can you buy into cow shares?
Here in Kentucky you can buy a share of a cow or goat and get part of the raw milk.
What state? It is legal in my state as long as you buy a raw milk share of a dairy cow. This is in Virginia.
Research if farms have cow shares. You pay for them to take care of the cow, the milk is free.
Wow. Yes, I'd move.
We make homemade ice cream and freeze that instead of plain milk
So cute your little girlies and the boys tall and handsome. 👍🏽🙏🏽
That is useful and it could be used to freeze-dry other products as well yet I need to see the price of the equipment and the energy use of it.
