  • We ordered a batch of Cornish cross a little over a month ago and now we are down to half of what we had! I've never lost so many birds so quickly. Thankfully our friends at Hoover Hatchery sent us out some more and so far they are doing great! We also have a batch of Red Ranger meat birds coming next week!

They also need magnesium. When they look sick it is a magnesium deficiency. You soak them in epsom salt water for a couple of minutes. Large chickens 5 minutes.

Get mad if you want, that breeder is way too small for 60 chickens . I wouldn’t put more than 30. A small pain like that though dog pile on top of each other, and the bottom ones get smothered or overheat.

Glad Hoover made it right and helped you out! There will always be successes and "failures" in life and I believe it is good to always show both. Everyone seems to think this life is easy but being transparent and showing that everyone has hiccups is a good thing! Keep up the good work!!

The cornish cross is a hybrid chicken. They grow so incredibly fast that there are many issues with them. Personally have always raised Red Rangers for this reason. Out of 100 last year only lost 5. I think you''ll be happy and less stressed with the Ranger.. Also have been very happy with the end product.

Hi Zach, sorry to hear that you lost so many chicks but at least Hoover Hatchery sent you replacements and then some. Can tell they are a good company to stand behind their chick's health. Just a thought that the waterer in the Chicken Tractor may be a little too high for those smaller chicks to reach the nibs. It looks high on the video, but maybe not.

Sorry to see the deaths. Hey try rounding out the corners in your young chick brooder so they cant all pile up in a corner . Also maybe just maybe its something in your feed. Maybe start them on medicated chick starter for the first bag. Just a suggestion, Zack.

That is the worst looking batch of 4 week old Cornish I've ever seen. My Freedom Rangers were twice the size of those things at 4 weeks; 1.5 lbs (F) to 2 lbs (M), across the straight run. @6 weeks they are 2.8-4 lbs. Something seriously wrong with that batch - 50% loss is catastrophic, even for Cornish X. My last dealing (and I mean last) with hoover was for some Buff Orpington and they were the smallest I've ever seen; we are talking 6lb roosters @ 18-20 weeks. I have one female left who is 6lbs; I sold or ate the rest - she was the only decent one of the 10.

@@ThePasturedHomestead I have Big Red Broilers coming from MM in July as well. I got 5 and 5 so I can do some cross with some of the FRs and some of my better Buff Os. I'm trying to create a decent dual purpose bird... The Orpington has fallen away from that role in the US badly, and Hoover sure isn't helping with their 'breed anything' policy. Hoover and other volume commercial hatcheries like it supply TSC and I've found all my birds from them to be very under sized. Good luck with the Rangers and I'm glad Hoover made good on those chicks. Sorry you had to go through all that.
