Track Pump Showdown - Silca Pista Plus Vs Lezyne Alloy Floor Drive

  • We recently got our Service Centre a new Track pump, the Silca Pista Plus so we thought it would be a great idea to compare it to our other pump the Lezyne Alloy Floor Drive, which costs half as much.
    We paid for both pumps and I have no relationship to either company so this is a totally independent review.

    in case you missed it, what he is saying is buy the SKS "rennkompressor" pump, because it already proved how long it lasts :D
    and the msrp is 65€, but you get it for around 40€.

    I'm not even close to a serious cyclist, but was fed up with the cheap $20 pump I've been struggling with the past few years. The flip up lever on it didn't work to keep the pump head in place, so it would take 2 people to pump up tires. I just ordered the Lezyne, and am glad to see that bike shop mechanics give it high praise!

    I have a Silca small pump for the road $$$$$ and a Lezyne digital drive floor pump that I got on sale half-price for at-home (still was very expensive) after a lifetime of using the cheapest pumps these are so awesome! 🤗

    I’ve got both but prefer the Silca especially with the Classic Stainless steel chuck. I’ve considered the Hiro chuck but hard to rationalize that price. I totally agree about scaling the gauge especuu it ally with everyone moving to tubeless! I’m at 75psi on my road Enve with 28c

    I have a Silca Pista bought new in the late 80's. Its been rebuilt once, still works fine. The push on chuck is good for tubs which have smooth stems, not so much for threaded stems. I replaced with the Hiro chuck, game changer. And now use a Ryobi hand held compressor with a digital readout and the Hiro chuck. Even better again. No need for a hand operated pump in the garage now. The Silca pump though indestructible in normal use, likely a thing you can safely put in your will.

    A gauge is most accurate in its mid-range hence the full range is double the common working value. I am on my second Lezyne chuck also, and now have to replace the gauge which is low quality (read the replacement gauge Amazon reviews) and proprietary ( I cannot find a 2.5" dial, back mount, gauge with M8x0.75 connection).

    I just found that Silca pump at a scratch and dent store for $80. It was only missing the Gauge lens.

    My lezyne pump head is start to leak after 4 months of home use (got 8 bikes for family). Need to wiggle the head after tighten it to tire valve to eliminate the leak. Even if i tighten it like crazy to the valve it will still leak from the rotational part of the head.
    Also the rotate mechanism is not good for some presta valve, sometime when I tighten the head to the presta valve, the valve it self will also rotate inside n eventually closed itself. Need to redo the head is so wasting time.
    Thinking to pick silca, It"s pricier in my country but i think it's worth the investment.

    Very useful comparison 👍
    Perfect timing 😊
    I have been looking for a new track pump and my final choices have been between the Silca and Lezyne
    I have seen the Lezyne but have been reluctant to buy
    the Silca on line as it is not available in Thailand and quite expensive by comparison
    You have now helped me decide so I will go with Lezyne
    Thanks again for another great vdo

    Your comment on the gauges. Gauges read more accurate in the center of the pressure range, divide the gauge display pressure into 3 equal portions and the center has the highest accuracy for read out. If you utilize 80 psig as your goto pressure, you should replace the gauge with a 160 psig gauge for better accuracy.

      Though if you tip the pump the gauge will most likely survive if it's mounted close to the ground.

  • @benbraceletspurple9108

    I've put 165 in a bicycle tire before, plus knowing high pressure is important if you put it on and it is already over 130.

    I'd like to know does the Lezyne pump head work on threadless valve stems or stem extender?

    • @henseleric
      @henseleric Před 2 lety

      I've never seen a smooth presta valve without threads at the top, for a cap. That's all the Lezyne requires. The majority of extenders have threads, too.

    The Silca is lovely. Nice made and feels a bit better than the Lezyne. But, have to say, my Lezyne still is alive, where the Silca broke after around 2 years. The foot (connection cylinder to the foot) is very bad made. Otherwise i would go for the Silca again!

    How strong do you have to pull the pump head of the Silca from the valve after inflation? Does the bleeding button help to make it easier? Got another pump and always slipping in the spokes of my bicycle because i have to pull that hard after inflation.

    • @veloatelier6122
      @veloatelier6122  Před 3 lety +3

      The slice requires a good yank to get it off as theses are pretty strong. I thought it would get easier with wear but so far it has remained consistent.

    What about tubulars that run 175+ PSI?

  • @matthewjackson5515
    @matthewjackson5515 Před rokem

    If you're a road cyclist then you're right, you don't need a pump that goes to 220. On the track though, those pressures are pretty common. I used to have a set of 19mm tires (Vittoria pista speeds) which had a MINIMUM pressure of 215, and a max of 300.
    I usually run my track tires at between 160/180psi.
    It's worth noting that the pista plus is the only pump in Silca's range that actually does go to 220, with the others topping out at around 160. I find a bit silly to buy equipment designed for track use and complain it's not ideal for road use.

    I have the Lezyne CNC floor drive and it’s spot on. Silca seems over priced in comparison. Short hose and it’s not even braided.

    Not a chamber pump for tubeless or a compressor in the back?

    • @veloatelier6122
      @veloatelier6122  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes we have both actually. We use a Zefal Champer in the studio if we need a quick blast to seat MTB tyres or we have the big compressor up at the paint shop.

      I've had this issue, but it was because when unscrewing the Lezyne, it would also unscrew the Presta valve-core, which leads to an air leak. I stopped using my Lezyne because of this obnoxious issue. If anyone has any tips on this, I would love to hear them, because I bought this thing a year ago, only used it a handful of times. can't sell it, because no one wants it

      @@wadewilcox5890 1/ Tighten the valve core, there is a tool right on the Lezyne pump. 2/ Don't over tighten the chuck on the tire valve. 3/ Use the ABS button on the chuck to bleed air from the hose before trying to unscrew the chuck.. I have a couple of Lezyne pumps and these 3 tips fixed the problem of the valve core unscrewing for me.

  • @fendercornford
    @fendercornford Před 9 měsíci

    You need to have a way of tightening the valve core with the Leyzine.
    More of an issue with their mini pumps.
    All those poor newbies who spent 20 minutes pumping up a tyre at the side of the road, only for it to deflate because they didn’t know you have to tighten the core.

    • @KeithHeinrich
