- Real quick! Josh explains the more efficient and less painful way to air up your tires. Are you losing air when you disengage? It might be the way the bicycle industry has taught you to air up your tires. Why is that wrong? Check out these tips & tricks.

Hiro Chuck: silca.cc/colle...
Transformed my experience with the Silca hiro chuck. Went from not loving it because it tilted askew at 6 o'clock to perfect pumps time after time at 12 o'clock. Thanks Josh for the nifty hack.
thanks Josh, I have been loading from the bottom for over 35 years. Ok, I slow, but just tired your method and it is great. Thanks for the hack!
Thanks Jon!
Even though I use a Leyzene treaded presta chuck on my circa 2000 Super Pista pump, I still always use the ~1:00 valve position.
I swapped out the old Silca brass chuck I was using (exactly like the one in this video, on the 'lesser' pump) since it seemed to be putting A LOT of undue pressure (getting it off of the valve) on the valve attachment point to the latex tubes I use in all of my wheels/tires.
BTW; that is one of the track bikes I would consider if I ever get back into racing, at the 70 year old Masters level. 😉
Thanks for clarifying the best way to use the classic silca chuck by tapping the valve to release the rubber seal. It has been driving me nuts for the past several years. Thanks again.
Over the last half century of trial and error, I've found I agree with and practice almost everything you mentioned, especially with the classic Silca brass chuck.
But I have one caveat with non-Silca right angle chucks. They seem to have a hard time maintaining seal with the sideways force of the hose dangling and tugging on those chucks. With them I prefer the six or nine o'clock position. It's a little bit harder to squeeze them on and off straight at six or nine, but still easy enough and they stay sealed until removed.
Hi Josh. Watched your video this morning w/ #justridebikes and sub’d immediately. Saw this video just now, and I couldn’t agree more. In fact, the problem solver in me realized this was the way to go w/in my first year of cycling (2018). Great to see a company focused on gains and efficiency… rather than style and trends. Thank you. Cheers from NorCal.
Finally a useful pump video
Thanks Terence!
Thank you, soooo much. I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.
So simple, but so helpful, thanks
Excellent info.
So simple and effective!! Thank you.
Things I learnt from my father when I was 9 years old that I didn’t know were pearls of wisdom.
I have been doing this all along ... and now I know why.
Thank you!
Everyday, 30+ years this way. With a Silca of course
Love it! - Josh
Your right
I've been doing this from the start. Not because of these reasons though, but because I'm too lazy to bend all the way down to 6 o'clock position. Glad to know there are other reasons too.
If I had a dime for every time I've watched someone put the chuck on at 12 o'clock only to have it leak or fall off the valve I could buy another Super Pista floor pump! I say "let gravity be your friend" and do it at 6 instead, especially if the gasket in your pump's chuck is a bit worn - otherwise you might find yourself with one hand holding the chuck on the valve while pumping with the other!
This happened to me a few times when I use my Pista at 12 O'clock and the whole Hiro chuck just get undone and blows off the stem valve hitting my carbon fork. I now does it at 6 O'clock while my bike is on the repair stand and only turn it to 9'oclock when I am ready to released the hiro chuck.
Super nice bike
Thanks ✌️
I learned to do it that way 30 yrs ago while wrestling with el cheapo pumps.
Not releasing pressure before inflating just makes it harder on yourself. Valves normally are stuck even with moderate psi.
This is all well and good, but I have a heck of a time removing to old style Silca pump head off a threaded valve stem body. I get smooth valve stems when ever possible, but they are not always available on the road. The new pump head is the only answer I have found for this issue.
Keith, the new 242 gasket for old silca heads, has a step in it that helps it seal when pushed on just 8mm, and the seal is on the base of the core and not the threaded stem, this makes it much easier to push off, but the trick is to just push it on the 8mm and not deeper.
Impossible keith... I think you are not using an original Silca Gasket... there are many compatible product on the market that are very bad product... original Silca gasket works very well on all my seven silca pump head after a small break-in period... olso the older one black was a good product... anyways... the new ones red gasket works better... If you are using an original gasket I think you are fine tuning the pump head...
Beautiful Black Pista Superpista!!! sell it again!!!
I have the 'old school' model, with the light colored wooden handle, triangular base, and the smaller diameter, chrome steel piston shaft.
These things last FOREVER, and yes, if you have cycling offspring, can be passed on as heirlooms!
6 position for me. Whenever I try 12 the air leaks, no matter how much adjustment I do to the hiro it just always leaks.
Try not pushing the chuck on as far, it should be able to seal on just the valve core if needed, but we have years of experience using Hiro 12-1 o'clock without issues
SILCA Velo silca, I will try that. Thanks!
Who hasn't been doing it that way??
From the marketing images, I'd say pretty much every other brand of pump!! There are 2 ad campaigns running right now from brands showing the chuck at 6 o'clock.. which is what inspired this video, so thanks to them for that!!
Well lol I’ve been messing this up FOREVER
