    “Oneesan” and “Oneechan” are Japanese words that basically translate to “sister” that male children usually use to refer to older girls (usually teenish age), not just their actual sisters. Pretty sure the weird “sis” title is a clumsy translation of that

    • @DarkCobra88
      @DarkCobra88 Před 3 lety +73

      It's the awkward barrier when languages cross, they portray Al to see Hitsugi as his "sister" whilst the JP version uses his younger position to attribute "onee-chan" as elder > family, though this is commonly overstepped in translation, not sure if that's because they literally translate and don't follow the culture (unlikely) or more that english doesn't really have direct translations for words of respect or mention of ones elders.
      Regardless, i think the seen could of been enjoyed in a comedy sense, I played the JP version but only up to ep4 (this update is where i quit i guess) so i didn't play this scene but i am certain they could of played it over as a joke, it's undeniable a fair amount of players to the game of familiar with JP culture via anime/manga as the game appeals to these crowds with it's large number of anime cross-over events, symbol art useage (create/import images into the game for "reaction" purpose) and general appreciation to said fans of the culture.

    • @blankpage9277
      @blankpage9277 Před 3 lety +28

      Younger girls use it too. It's not just for boys to refer to older sisters or older girls of older sister age. Korean is the one with specific words for older sibling that change based on if the younger is male or female.

      @@DarkCobra88 EP4's story had a fair bit of backlash from the NA community because of schoolgirls looking after a young boy... adding this scene to the mix would have probably pushed a large chunk of the community over the edge. On the other hand scenes like this are fairly normal in anime, it's one of those cultural barriers where Western audiences see this sort of thing as perverted (at least more so than jp audeinces).
      On a related note, you could throw together an entire video series looking at scenes that were cut from PSO2 (cut from the JP version before the English release was even considered)

    The whole "sis" thing in Fantasy Star Online may be a reference to the Japanese phrase, nee-san, which, while also meaning sister, is a term used for referring to an older, teenaged girl, or one who is at least respected by the speaker.
    It is the same for the male counterpart, aniki, which is used for respected young men by their juniors. Aniki, however, also has a very informal context, so using it in a formal conversation is seen as a faux pas.

      Honestly, I don't think the Bad Fur Day writers intended the ending or the removed experiment scene to be humorous. I got the impression that they wanted to take full advantage of the opportunity to have kiddy cartoon characters be featured in a variety of adult situations. Yes, it certainly has many comedic elements, but I don't think they felt tied down to make every aspect a comedy. The Spooky chapter is an example where they dabble in adult horror themes of zombies, gore, jump scares, etc. and have some adult humor sprinkled throughout.

    Honourable mention: The infamous 'Ma Belle Peche' cutscene from Xenosaga Episode 1, where the censored version somehow became _far more_ disturbing.
    There's the understandable changes, like removing blood and cutting away from Kirsch's arm being broken (though the sound's still there), but then we get to the man himself, Albedo. They removed his knife and re-rendered all instances where he holds it, resulting in him _tearing off his arm and head with his bare hands._ They then, for whatever the fuck reason, *UNCENSORED HIS STILL-TALKING SEVERED HEAD.* No wonder poor MOMO faints at the end.
    Also, there's a certain scene in Xenosaga Episode 3 where a woman is mauled to death and her young daughter tries desperately to scoop the pool of blood back into her mother's body. Yep, they removed *all* the blood from that scene, without changing anything else.

    I can't believe I'm still learning stuff about FF7. It's insane how much was in that game.

    I remember playing paper mario as a teen and thinking several times that it was a bit more mature. There's the scene on the spaceship with peach that left me practically speechless

    4:48 you have this almost entirely wrong. Bubble Bath Babes an NES game, not a SNES game. And it was the US version of a game by the same name developed in Taiwan. It was released in Japan too, but it was nearly a year after the US release and it was named "Soap Panic". The Mermaids of Atlantis game was a censored and re-released version so they could also sell it to a broader audience. I don't expect anyone to just know ALL these things, but like one google search would have helped you out so much, man.

    3:18. You have no idea why an Easter egg would be in a game? Dude ain't that your entire channel

    Completely forgot about that Nitro-Fueled censorship, I remember when that first happened.
    Actually, there were more instances than just Tawna. Pretty much any character who had a “black” or “white” skin was renamed. (“Black Zem” became “Solar Flare Zem”, “White N. Tropy” became “Quartz N. Tropy,” etc)
    The character Papu Papu, who is a native tribe chief, had a censored skin that’s arguably more interesting than the Tawna one.
    In the original game, he was unlocked by beating the Red Gem Cup, as other bosses were by beating other gem cups.
    However, since N-F has bosses become unlocked by simply beating them, the Gem Cups unlocked skins for each boss themed after their gem cups. (“Green Ripper Roo,” “Yellow Pinstripe,” etc)
    Naturally, Papu Papu‘ swans “Red Papu Papu,” which, in the same update that changed the other skin names, changed to “Crimson Papu Papu” as calling Indigenous peoples “red” is considered extremely offensive in North America.
    Love your vids, Odd!

    What kind of people are these companies hiring?! One time the devs just puts some WEEEEEIRD shit in there and had to be told that's bad. In other cases something that's actually cool gets removed also.

    When I saw the "Watermelon Tawna" thing, I thought it was removed because it was referring to her..."watermelons"
