Monster Rancher's alt ending writer was like "no child is determined enough to finish this so let's give the adults something to laugh at"
Oh I can totally see that being EXACTLY what happened (though considering Pokemon..... I think they may be underestimating kids and how absolutely obsessed they can get lmao). And I mean.... even kids that did reach that ending will probably gather some of what's up but a lot of it is gonna go over their heads. Very common for children's media (especially when it's main target demographic is children but the devs know they also have a major following from adult fans as well) to include little things for older fans, fans revisiting for nostalgia when older, and parents, so I think you're exactly right.
Well... Tbh. I never knew how to save in GTA SA, so I'd start over and over again. Aw shiet.

would have been right up there with the little easter egg in a later Walking Dead game where you can interact with a specific zombie that talks normally as a result. i think it makes a commentary on something but i forget, i recall the player character actually looked flabbergasted after the fact.

I still can't get over the fact that an ending where the main character of a kids game presumably deflowers all the women of his village got thru the quality check.
Easy answer actually. Back then games were tested mostly on the surface, so a lot of secret stuff got through because none of the age-rating testers ever got to this kind of content. This is for example the reason why the originall "Bionic Commando" got an age-rating buff allmost 20 years later to 18+ (because the testers back then never managed to beat the game and thus were unable to see the very gory final cutscene)
Nowadays games get screened better (the makers of the game have to show every single asset of a game during the ratings process, etc.), and if you'd try to hide anything from the age-rating agencies while they rate your game you could get actually fined, or worse, be denied a rating at all which means your game wouldn't be allowed to be sold in stores. That's why this stuff doesn't really happen anymore.

@@doctorcheese107 11 years is a freakin long time in gaming. you also have to take into consideration that stuff like the hot coffe mod for GTA put the industry on the grill in public, meaning they had to implement these steps to make sure there would no longer be these kinds of scandals.
and yes, people have to do this. this is one of the reasons RPG's take their sweet long time for the most part to get released, they don't have to just translate the script, they also have to get it checked by the age rating agencies.

@@k-leb4671 Toby did play Yume Nikki (and we can assume every other big rpgmaker game) but I very much doubt it inspired Undertale or Deltarune, there's just nothing of Yume Nikki in neither of those games. However, the whole banana joke in Deltarune is a reference to a Yume Nikki fangame but I sadly forgot the name of the game.

A One Man Railway Station!
One of my favorite non standard endings is in Disgaea 2, where you end up facing a level 1000 Laharl (main character of the first game) as an "unbeatable" boss fight in a story mission, but it is possible to beat him if you grind enough before getting to it. If you do beat him in that mission he gets so pissed off that he simply destroys the entire planet with you on it.
The premise of Etna Mode in D1 also always amused me, where Etna hits Laharl too hard when trying to wake him up and kills him, and then has to be the protagonist in his place.

I have Drawn to Life with the car crash ending. I didn't like that all of the game was just inside the kids head, but it made sense when playing though the games a second time. They are still my favourite games on the DS.

Also rather interesting parallel that is created with Moon and Undertale, with both having a major lore aspect buried in the game code, hidden away (the Dragon in Moon and Gaster in Undertale)

@@Hugsloth Only if you want to guarantee that you see them. There's a number called FUN that is randomly generated between 1 and 100 whenever you start playing the game. Only at certain fun values does Gaster stuff appear. It's possible to see them naturally, but it's rare
The thing about Drawn To Life 2's ending is that the entire ending of Mike's coma is actually set up a lot beforehand. In the first game, Mike is the ONLY human present in the entire world, and still is within the 2nd game. A lot of the characters in the Raposa Village are people that would closely be related to the incident, A Doctor, Police Officer, Mari and Jowee are the dolls they had (likely from the carnival they went to) Heather is a reflection of his sister, who had half of her face injured during the incident, and Wilfre (and the shadows) likely are a representation of loss, or death.
When you really look back at all the pieces, the game's ending starts to come together and make a lot of sense. Especially when you take into account the beginning of the 2nd game, asking you do describe a certain scene (that being the accident), and some of the ending bits of the game, which requires you to wake up mike, in the way of putting out the flame, which takes that beginning section back up before heading to the credits to explain what happened that day.
The falling from a tree ending sucks because it completely throws all this out the window, and throws all of the game's stuff that points to an accident in the dumps. It makes everything that happened in Mike's dream seem really strangely high steaks for uh... just being knocked out for a bit rather than IN A COMA AND POSSIBLY COULD DIE
I know this doesn't really count, but I love that fakeout ending in Control where your character gets taken over and it rolls the credits only to have the words slowly distort and reveal that the game isn't over. It makes you think you messed up somehow and got a "bad ending" but in reality it's designed to happen every time
A few games do that, like Danganronpa & DDLC. Those also boot you to the title screen, tho for Danganronpa it looks completely normal lol
Saints Row IV also did this. In the mission where you try to save Matt Miller (a member of your crew), Zinyak (the antagonist) gives you an option to either sacrifice yourself for humanity, or save Matt and make humanity go extinct. If you choose to save Matt, the game continues like normal, but if you try to sacrifice yourself, the end credits will show but with Zinyak’s logo instead of yours. Once the credits are over, you’ll get a game over screen that said “Zinyak lied” or something like that.
Bayonetta, metal gear solid 4 hitman blood money (that can become a bad end too!)
Dead Space 2 Ending
I remember I was yelling in utter disbelief when it happen cause I didn't wanted the story to end abruptly. Glad they included it regardless

While it's original ending is dark, the ending to Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter makes sense when put into context with the story. Mike is the only human found in that world, and the character of Heather represents his sister because of her deformed face. The first game deals with the loss of a parent while the second game faces the dilemma of whether a kid should face the darkness of reality or hide in fantasy. The child like elements of the entire game reflect Mike's last moments of innocence before the accident and Wilfre (the game's antagonist) is the impending destruction of that innocence. In other words, the ending to Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter fucked me up too but got me to really think about it because of how shocking it was.
I was so annoyed when he literally said this was abrupt and out of left field. It really wasn’t. The whole thing built up to it. The original probably made emote sense tbh

I used to play these games all the time as a kid (never beat the final boss so i never saw any endings) and let me tell you kids barely read any of the dialogue during cutscenes. If I saw that ending as a kid I definitely would've just cried instead of trying analyzing the story.

Never forget the alternate ending in Command where Fox lost almost everyone in his team to Star Wolf, became a binge-eater and alcoholic, and later decided to join F-Zero along with Falco. Sad and bizarre at the same time.
It's so weird that the default ending for Command is Fox getting absolutely cucked by Panther Caruso. As the DEFAULT ending, and that you have to go through it again in order to get the ending where she sticks with him to have a kid. Especially because there's multiple endings where she leaves Fox for one reason or another.

3:50 While those characters did appear in the anime (with Holly being a main character), they're actually more significant than that. Holly and Colt were the player's assistants for each of the first two Monster Rancher games.
And neither of them even gave a wink to ya' in the original games... But they do far more than that for some random protag.

The Car Accident Ending is actually the canon one and makes more sense with the story's context.
The 3rd game they made on the Switch actually treats this as the canonical ending as well.
The Custom Robo ending really reminds me of a few secret game overs in Super Paper Mario. You can game over by refusing to accept the pure heart at the beginning, refusing to put your helmet on in space, and insisting on teaming up with Dimentio.

I never knew Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter had a modified ending. I recalled having the original and I went back today and re-beat the final level and confirmed I have the original version. Neat! Apparently the strikingly different artwork was intentional to highlight the differences between the imagined world and the real one.
The entire concept went over my head as a kid. Frankly, while I admire the bold decision I generally dislike any "it didn't happen"/"imaginary things don't exist" endings so I thought it was a bad ending as a kid (even though I didn't understand it) and still think so now.
Apparently there's a 3rd game that ties the two worlds together which is awesome.. Too bad the game itself doesn't look very good. Can't say anything about the plot but I love knowing this closure exists.
There's a Wii Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter. It has a completely different plot, despite the same title.

I remember that drawn to life ending as a kid. It had a somber song playing over it with a kid in a coma. I had no idea why it was there after beating the last boss. Dark as hell.

The darker ending to Drawn to Life had to be changed in order for them to keep the lower age rating. A third game in the Drawn to Life series called "Two Realms" was actually released last year which confirms that the darker of the two is the canon ending. The developers also mentioned that their parents' death was also meant to be uncertain.
Imagine being so invested in your hero at the time to realize he was on death row for killing his family...brah lol
Good thing the main character from that game was bland and unlikable, preventing anyone from getting really invested in him.

That Custom Robo alternate ending gets me. Always take responsibility to save the world, people, even if you get bored by sidequests and tortured by unthinkable acts of violence.
You can do something similar in Golden Sun. At the conclusion of the prologue, once the stakes are laid out for you, the village chief asks Isaac if he will take the quest, and if you say no, everyone just gives up and the game ends.

I think Monster Ranchers Raunchy ending was probably a "lets put an adult content ending in the game, kids will never ever be able to accomplish this large task so they'll never see it, it'll only be dedicated adults so heres an ending for those adults"

Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter was my childhood but the ending caught me off guard ;w;
Yeah, I only got the patched version so I wondered why the girl had half her face covered, but turns out it was supposed to mirror her injury in the car accident
I had the original ending and while I found it scary, I also found it sad and somehow I felt it deserved to be in the game because that is what made me think a lot more about the whole game, from little details to sentences.
I really liked the art style and it was seriously well drawn.
My question is why they even thought they needed to add an ending that explains everything
according to the third game the original ending is cannon, though that doesn't really mean anything considering it completely retcons the fact that wilfre created the shadows on accident, and apparently just carried them, which makes no sense. though the original one is still probably cannon, because that was the developers original vision for the game.
Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter might just be my favourite ending of all time, and I'm saying that as someone who hates endings.

I had that original version of the Drawn to Life ending, didn't know there was a updated version. That ending was foreshadowed in the first game too.

The original ending in Drawn to life made sense because it was properly foreshadowed throughout the beginning and later in the game it worked well as well while the parents' deaths were left ambiguous as an interview basically said whether they died or not is up to the player's interpretation and although the ending is sad the primary conflict at the end of the game is whether or not the characters in game once they are aware that if they do defeat the villain they have to be willing to vanish when the comatose boy awakens and the sad mood that is pervasive through the finale really sticks with you.

I actually got that ending as a kid. I legit freaked out a bit. I'm not bullshitting because I vividly remember the girl with the head bandage covering her eye. I even told my mom about it and she remembers too. We both agree that it was very dark.

Huge Drawn To Life fan here! The alternate ending was not added in a patch, contrary popular belief. All copies of Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter have the original, very sad ending in which Heather and Mike's parents are killed in a car accident, and Mike is in a coma. The much more tame ending is only found in a collection version of the game, which is a DTL 1 and 2 bundle.
This, at least, is what I've learned from the DTL fan Discord.
i thought the ending to drawn to life was awesome, how it was literally "all a dream" or whatever, because that was my first exposure to the concept of a videogame occuring inside a character's head.

Custom Robo is a gem. You can even give away a very important item halfway through the game, and then you need to awkwardly run across the entire map to get it back near the end of the playthrough.

the comic book is one of the most self-referential and puerile premises ever... if there is comic book like SandMan, watch man or Hellblazer or even Spawn (sometimes) for how much silly it gets, that could be presented as a form of literature, comic books like Wanted and Kick-Ass (I sense a pattern) are a representation on why people reading comic books are considered with their stereotypes...
the movie at least presents us a logical world with logical reactions to somewhat logical actions.
WOW, so as a kid I actually experienced the much darker Drawn to Life ending! I never knew it was special up until now and it just BLOWS MY MIND how they put this in a kid's game. Sure, Drawn to Life has always been one of my favorite games for the DS; that ending however, is something that has stuck with me throughout the years. So Thank you OddHeader! I appreciate knowing that the ending I SAW around the time I was 10 was actually censored after release.

Didn't know about the change in the Drawn to Life ending, had the car crash one as a kid. Definitely a brutal way to end such a colorful adventure, and was pretty crazy to see as a kid, but just had me thinking about it a lot instead of being scarred really.
Oddheader is the culmination of all my favorite things about "easter egg" channels. fun personality, good collabs, and actual in depth explanation with knowledge of gamesense. Keep it up man.
I played drawn to life when I was a kid and the ending of the second game caught me by surprise but it also made me upset because everything I worked for wasn't real

It makes more sense and i would say is the canon one considering Heathers face is injured in that ending and the car smoke manifests as the dark smoke monsters in the game

Dunno if it's unpopular, probably is, but I kinda prefer the Coma ending in Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter. Considering some of the heavier tones (Heather in general, Mari coping with the death of her father while taking over his role as mayor, etc.) I feel like a rougher ending makes more sense than "oh, mike fall out of tree and get owie" (could also just be because I was one of the people who got a cartridge with the coma ending though)

I think all copies of the game that weren't a collection/bundle copy had that ending.

I remember that drawn to life ending very well. Interesting to find out that there was a happier ending then the one I saw as a kid. Still love the game though.

I think it was because of time constraints. It was done during the debugging phase, was it not? Too late to add one entire extra ending.
Because the writers for the game didn't come up with it. One developer threw it in for fun.
Custom Robo was such a fun game when I was a kid. One of my all time favorite underrated game cube titles.

If I remember correctly, similar to number 2, in Super Paper Mario, you can just say you don't want to save the world, and they don't force you, so the game just ends, I think endings like this are pretty funny

Whenever someone brings up Drawn to Life I get extremely happy. They ruined the whole point and feeling of the second game’s ending by toning down the violence in the rerelease. It was prolly the first game that made me cry, along with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, i was 11-12 and had severe unmedicated depression so those endings hit me like a ton of bricks 🙃

Fun fact about the original ending to Drawn to Life 2: it's entirely canon.
DtL3 references the original "unpatched" version's ending about halfway through I think? I've not played much of the game myself because it's... not very good, but that's in there and it does reuse frames from the original ending slideshow.
Also there's a tiny bit of false/missing info regarding where the patched ending comes from: Drawn to Life 2 was released in two separate versions; the original standalone release and the "Drawn to Life: The Collection" release which featured both of the first two games *but is where the patched ending originates.*
