after learning that stephanie meyer is mormon it really made me see the vampiric fantasy of twilight as being related to mormon conceptions of the afterlife i.e. living with your eternal family

I distinctly remember the way Stephanie Myer had everyone described as marble, and even the movie showed the death of vampires as concrete being ripped apart before being set on fire, which would imply that fat vampires should have also been literally cemented in the body they were turned in. Putting aside the fact that none of this is real, that means they are unaffected by things like exercise, calories, thyroid issues (hyper or hypo), health problems, disordered eating, or any other potential weight gain or loss in her universe. She turned them into that dude from the fantastic four franchise. Literally made them rocks. Stephanie did you forget your own plot?

I always interpreted it as fatphobia in general. In that in popular media, they want to emphasize that immortal vampires = thin hot people. I also felt in visual media one can make the argument that the thin frame is a sign of the cost of being a vampire, the living dead. They eat less because they drink blood and it's not a "fun" way to get nourishment. And so they are cursed not to be able to enjoy the human/living joy of feeling full (of life) and truly enjoying their meal. It's easier to get this idea through in visual media by showing a vampire wasting away to skin and bones.
But yeah, if we don't scrutinize this interpretation, it can romanticize anorexia, even if it's not the intent. It also plays into the stereotype that anorexia isn't real until a person is massively underweight, when in reality you can be any size and have anorexia.

I felt that comment about the plus size models that fit within the hourglass figure being the more standard look for plus size clothes. Here I am, thinking my body is not proportional to how I “should look”. It’s something I still struggle with, and even if I find myself being very accepting of other bodies… I can’t easily give myself that same acceptance. Great video, was never big into twilight myself but I enjoyed it nonetheless!

This video was so good! It highlighted a theme of vampirism that I had overlooked, as feeding is often interpreted as inherently s*xual, (p*netration of fangs = s*x) a more literal reading of feeding is definitely valid, and deserves to be dissected. I think a large part of the reason we now see vampires as sexy anti-heroes and no longer as monsters is due to Anne Rices Interview with the Vampire ( Edward gives HUGE Louis vibes). Louis' struggle with feeding is a large part of the book, and his refusal to indulge and find enjoyment in it is a big reason why he's seen as more human and virtuous than other vampires. Although Louis does ultimately decide to feed on humans his anguish in feeling pleasure in partaking, and his refusal to seek out more victims than he needs, is what sets him apart from the other morally dubious or outright evil vampires we meet in the book. The book can arguably be seen as the reason why a a significant theme for the modern vampire, the choice to feed or restrict their feeding, is ultimately a battle of morality. Those who choose to feed and enjoy it being seen as selfish monsters, and those who don't as inherently more human and morally superior. I think American society internalized this more than we realize. As for Twilight I did read it during my teenage years and the obsession with not only Edwards, but also Bella's hunger and apatite had a negative impact on me. Growing up I was always fatter than my friends and siblings I was always a size large, but was not fat enough to warrant public scrutiny more subtle fat shaming from family reminding me to be careful that I was looking heavier, and to be careful about gaining more weight. Food was a comfort for me and still is now. My grandmothers always cooking a lot of food and cultural dishes that were delicious a way of saying they loved me, but then feeling guilty as family were not shy about telling me that the way I looked was more important. Constantly pointing out the perfectly sculptured vampires who never ate at lunch. The way that food is described as tasting like literal dirt to vampires certainly had me fantasizing about how nice it would be to simply not have an appetite or eat food at all. The Cullens, especially Edward's ability to restraint themselves even with the food they are supposed to want, blood, was impressive to me. While Bella's lack of appetite in New Moon can be attributed to depression, there are plenty of mentions before and after New Moon where Bella does display a real apathy for food and eating. Funnily enough many of the times Bella's hunger is more encouraged is when she is expecting, the food being more for the baby than for her. As much as I wanted to believe I was above being insecure about how much I ate, I still found myself thinking maybe I could be more slender and therefore more desirable if I had Bella's same attitude towards food, or Edward's restraint. As for Siobhan I feel like Stephenie Meyer was trying to do representation that made everyone happy, and while understandable, representation that becomes more about appeasing everyone rather than accurate and for the group you are portraying always ends up feeling insulting, half-assed, and weird as you have pointed out. I think making Siobhan tall and voluptuous gave a the surface-level depiction of a fat positive vampire. However knowing people might make fun of her as manly, as other female vampires in the books are often portrayed as beautiful and doll-like she felt the need to really jam in the feminine descriptor. On the other hand not wanting to be seen as glorifying fatness, Siobhan is never seen as inherently desirable. While I'd argue the fat positivity movement hadn't become mainstream yet this would coincide with Meyer's very religious ideals as gluttony is considered sinful. I am so sorry this comment is so long, but your video really made me think about the ideas that I hadn't realized I internalized about vampires. It also made me consider new ideas I hadn't before so thank you for putting your degree to work, and coming out with this great analysis love your videos and fashion hope you have a great day!

The lack of intellectual curiosity in some of these comments is astounding. I don’t understand why some people can never grasp that culture impacts art, and vice versa. And their arguments don’t make sense either, because they’re trying to justify their thinly-veiled fatphobia with the excuse of “world-building” when, as is mentioned, there ARE fat vampires, they’re just not common in media-so the explanation that vampires lose fat in the transformation process is not like, an enforced rule of vampire lore.

i really appreciate this comment! the whole point of this video is (for me to have fun cause i like researching stuff that interests me) but also to analyze HOW the views of the society in which media is made affects the depiction of characters which, in this case, would be vampires in general. like you said, culture influences art and art influences culture.

@@lovejessicablair In reality I think societal values (both adherence to and subversion of) will always inform art, even if something doesn’t seem immediately political, AND even if it wasn’t something the artist made a conscious choice to portray, so accordingly, media has the power to influence the public for better or for worse. I appreciated this video for touching on that fact, and just for exploring this specific subject in general because yeah, more fat vampire would rule.

i find it quite interesting how the shift to hot vampire fantasy and the inclusion of “desirability” into these supernatural creatures includes a telling message behind their aesthetic, immortality, and their engineered desirability. i only watched the movies so maybe meyers talked about this more in the books, but edward’s spiel about “everything about me is designed to draw you in” paired w the frigidity and inflexibility of his appearance just seems to lack sense given how quickly and easily beauty standards change. if everything is make believe and vampires possess inhuman abilities, it almost makes more sense that their bodies would change to reflect what is aesthetically attractive in the era they’re in, their body malleable and ever-changing. sure, if a person was turned in 1800, they’d look different, but if their appearance and body is engineered to lure in prey, why are there not vampires walking around with bbls? (this is partly a joke but also a nod to how quickly beauty standards change and are culturally subjective.) like it would almost make more sense if vampires have flexible and ever-changing appearances to reflect what is beautiful to their prey and not larger society. the lack of fat vampires to me seems to convey the idea, which you touched upon when you explained how opinions about fatness and fat bodies hasn’t changed much in centuries, that thinness and the idea that it is the desired body is skinny, and authors make the decision, even if it is subjective, to write this into their fictional worlds and works because, to them and their audience, this is an easy thing to assume and believe that it’s almost compulsive to assume? i feel like that’s the true messaging that writers and fans sometimes don’t want to grapple with or confront when talking about why there aren’t fat vampires.

an answer: yes there are fat vampires. but the societal norm is "skinny" or "equally proportioned" just like being black as a vampire isn't the norm (vampires usually are pale). they are usually exuding an aura of class and traditional beauty and "perfection" and the term "fat" just doesn't align with that, i know that zeitgeist might play a big role in all that so maybe when chubby becomes the new beauty standart, movie characters like vampires might follow suit.

In practical sense I understand why vampires are portrayed as muscular, but what I don't understand is the dact that bigger people also have muscles ?!???? Like 😃😂😂😂 If you're plus size and then turn into a vampire, sure you might get more muscles but the fat won't go anywhere. Like even if you think scientifically, when we die the cells also die. So the fat wouldn't get burned anywhere. Also, wth was that skin melanin stuff 🤣🤡🤡 Like "tell me you're racist without telling me you're a racist". Black and other skin coloured than white ppl can also be pale ??? You can be the deepest shade of black and yet look dead pale when no blood is circulating inside your skin. Wth 🤡 I do hope when the day comes that the vampire genre pics up again that we get more variation and representation. Especially !!! Bc those "bad" vampires are portrayed eating for pleasure and not for hunger, and by science, if you just eat and eat you most likely will gain weight. AND to nit pick even further, surely it would matter what kind of blood you're consuming from what kind of person.
Anyways, thanks for this video. I love the vampire genre but there are some really annoying and stupid things ab it

this video is so vindicating, it reminded me of a godawful quote from the mortal instruments thats been pissing me off since i was 15
"Clary wondered if there were any ugly vampires, or maybe any fat ones. Maybe they didn't make vampires out of ugly people. Or maybe ugly people just didn't want to live forever."
Like jesus christ, you might as well just say fatties and uggos are better off dead. I know the author is fat herself, so i do empathise with where this toxicity comes from, but god its so harmful and irresponsible to put that kind of stuff out into the world, especially when you're writing for young teens.
I don't have any major additions for your very short fat vampire list, but there was a short film (produced by disney :/) called Growing Fangs released a few years back where the main character is a fat teenage girl vampire, and its pretty fun! The main character is played by keyla monterroso mejia, who has a side role in abbott elementary. I'd love it if the movie was less disney and a little more gothy, but i'll take what i can get

that’s so interesting! i’ve never read the mortal instruments but that’s such a wild (and harmful) quote to include in a book that’s predominantly read by tweens/teenagers. this is kind of a tangent but that reminds me of carrie (by stephen king) and how she’s fat in the books but has never been played by a fat actress in the movie adaptations and how much more the story would make sense if they included that detail. representation really matters not just for the people who look like the character, but to de-stigmatize and familiarize those people (whether they’re fat, queer, disabled, poc, etc) for people who aren’t like that character

@@lovejessicablair God I think about fat Carrie all the time! It's such a missed opportunity that none of the many many adaptations of that story (that I know of) have featured a fat actress as Carrie.
There are so many points in the story where a fat actress would make the scene so much more impactful but I think the shower scene especially. The terror of changing/being naked in public and being ridiculed for just having a body is such a quintessential fat coming of age experience.
I'd also just love to see a fat girl use telekinesis to get bloody revenge on everyone who treated her like shit.
The closest to a fat Carrie that I've ever come across is in the notorious flop musical adaptation of Carrie from the 80s. The musical itself is a complete fever dream ( tbh I personally kinda love it) but the main actress linzi hateley, though I can't say that I'd describe her as being fat, was slightly closer in body type to the Carrie of the book.

@@lovejessicablairhonestly their comments aren't worth jack, if we REALLY wanna get into "vampire biology" (without just making stuff up because... it's all fantasy...), people in the real work would die from an all blood diet. That's it, that's the end of the "it makes sense biologically" argument to vampires. The reason they don't die from an all blood diet is because they're made up! Not real!
So I could just as easily say "actually, for vampires, an all human blood diet is like an all carb/overly rich diet, so all human blood drinking vampires should be at least a little fat," because that's the fun of fantasy!
Anyways in this essay, I believe all vampires should be at least a little fat 🧡

Imagine missing the point of the whole video
They're fantasy creatures, why would it be "inaccurate" for them to be fat? It's okay for not everybody to look and act the same in a species
