y2k fashion just looks like a more colorful heroin chic. it's like saying, "the problem doesn't exist anymore. look at all these colors and cute shit." but it's all just surface level.

I feel like the 90s and 00s were a body dysmorphic ED normalizing hell. Women had to be SO thin to be respected. Nowadays' "thin with curves in the right places" ideal is on the other hand most often unattainable without plastic surgery. I remember the it girl of my highschool (tall, blonde, tan, skinny) suddenly being laughed at for being flat and boyish. I despised the boys for sexualizing her when skinny was the thing, and despised them still when they turned around and made fun of her. Male Gaze and patriarchy dictating female bodies has to end.

ugh i completely agree!! i remember when people super skinny with a flat butt was super trendy and now everyone wants (like you said) thin with curves "in the right places." it's so wild how body types have been made into trends and how anybody who doesn't fit into that "trend" gets ridiculed and dehumanized.

    • @robokill387

It's not a case of "other body types not trying the styles" it's that a lot of fashion plain does not fit any other body types except for the skinny ideal. And in the case of Y2K, it's designed in such a way to emphasise skinniness and flat stomachs, and makes people with other body types look bad.

I feel like girls today are alot more empowered and proud about their bodies and we should thank ourselves for that. We were made to feel fat and we didn't want the next generation to feel that way. I hope it just gets better with each generation. Women empowering women to be our best selves and to straighten each other's crowns. We are all queens and we all deserve to love our bodies and wear what makes our souls sing!!

A common trend I’ve seen in fashion right now is, “if you’ve got big boobs you suck”. Literally every dress or corset top has built in cups only for a/b/c/d cups there is NO option for having big boobs and a skinny waist. You either have to be skinny or plus size to fit fashion rn

thank you so much for this video. I was hitting puberty in the early 2000s and as far as I remember, I felt to fat. I felt to fat to wear anything fashionable or the stuff I found cute and I remember beeing so horribly aware of my body, when I wore something a little out of my comfort zone. I felt like a complete failure for not having a freakin thigh gap, I did not eat for five days in a row and shit like that. I thought everybody was staring at me, judging me. Nowadays, way older and way heavier (and still not fat), I finally start to not giving a shit anymore. Some days it is easier than others. And Videos like this are so helpful to identify why I felt and feel this way

I see this all the time on modern TikTok. Reminds me of the 2000s and feels like nothing changed. Skinny white and Asian women wearing outfits that on anyone weighing more than them would look INSANE! If I wore an identical outfit I’d either be accused of looking slutty or crazy. If someone larger than me wore them people would make fun of them. Absolutely do not understand how in such a supposedly “woke” era this ugly thing remains so strong.

Love this videos! Also, I think it’s important to note the context of fatness as being desirable because of its ties to wealth in the Middle Ages and how symbols of wealth affect how we see desirable body shapes. Like how wealth now is associated with thinness/certain unattainable body types in the western world because you can pay to have those features (through surgery or expensive diets, personal trainers etc) or you need time to be able to dedicate to attain those features and so privilege (like hours to run or being able to go to the gym etc).

    • @linauk5026
      @linauk5026 Před 2 lety +16

Totally agree. Now being fat is attributed to poverty… not lack of food but cheap, processed foods and lack of physical exercise. Total opposites.

It so sad how people have misinformation for weightloss. Hours of cardio and restrictive expensive diets is the worse and less efficient way to lose weight. Eating healthy consistently is all you need to do, and that’s not expensive at all.

Most have to maintain that in one way shape or form so for it to be so pushed is very unrealistic. The most weird part is now days they want flat stomach and big other regions which is not natural either in most cases.

anywhere where you type “y2k” in the search bar anywhere you buy clothes from like amazon/ebay has nothing but super thin models all different poses and places the pics were taken with only “s, m, l, xl” and half the time it’s in asian sizes… sounds like some factories in china are pumping out cheaply made imitation clothing that relies sales heavily on photoshopped pictures of random trendy skinny models and what they’re wearing in the pictures when it’s just unrealistic for anyone buying, even thin because they model whatever they’re selling only on a picture (the same picthat pasted in all the same types of listings) pretty much every single picture shows their stomach.

I graduated high school in 2004. I was right in the middle of all of this. I was a size 5 from about 2000 through 2006 and I was always self-conscious because I was considered kind of chubby, mostly because I always had very large boobs and I carry weight in my belly instead of my hips or butt . I remember the day I tried on my regular size 5 jean while shopping and they were too tight. I was mortified. I never felt "thin", although looking back at pictures I looked great! I just wish I could go back and tell myself that. I saved some key clothing pieces from my teenage years and they look so tiny now. Now I'm a Mother of 2, I've worked office/desk jobs most of my adult life and have the now size 12 apple shaped body I was always terrified of having. What I DO have though are 2 wonderful Sons and a hot Husband who adores me (I never thought I would end up with a hottie of a husband, but this is #2, I upgraded ;) ). I have a great job and a house to call my own. Yeah, I'm not a size 2, nor do I want to be one at this point. I'm tired of being uncomfortable in my own skin. I've been working on loving and accepting all versions of myself. Some days are better than other, but the right clothes help a lot. I love vintage and pinup fashion and have recently found Rockin Betty in Las Vegas. Holy moly! It was amazing to go to a vintage reproduction store full of amazing cloths that actually fit!!! It has really helped me feel better to find clothes that fit me instead of trying to fit into clothes not meant for curves. How amazing is it to have so many options now.

ahMAZING video :O ! your final note made me reflect on myself while selecting new pieces to try on. It doesnt always "flatter" me, because the item of clothing lives in my mind on a slim model. More and more with age, being a fashion lover, and knowing my body, self, and what brings me confidence, I am able to more accurately predict how a certain piece of clothing will look on me (minus the quality of the article- sometimes they are just crap unfortunately). Thanks for this amazing video, its very succint and i so appreciate your point of view, amongst all the content creators here on youtube i see a uniqueness in what you decide to put on here.

I’m surprised that you didn’t mention hip bones!! That was mine & my friends OBSESSION in 2000-2002. We were all 20 in 2000 while they all had flat stomachs, I did not. I have always carried some fat in my stomach even when I was a high school cheerleader and weighed 130.
But I specifically remember spring break in Mexico when we all laid out in the sun (no sunscreen of course!) and lamented that our hip bones popped out when we were laid down, but when we stood up, we had to suck in to get them to show. And that was just the worst! 🙄🙄🙄
Now at age 43 I would kick a puppy to get the body I had back then. And I LOVE animals.

  • @leannajones9241

I believe 90s/00s fashion was simply a revamp of the 60s/70s, when more people were just getting a TV and had 5/6 channels that may/may not be working if they got them, so people were still a lot more active and thus thinner. This prevailed into the 00s when cable was still very expensive. The “thick” instagram trend did not popularize until the 2010s when TV cable became more accessible, so it greatly boils down to TV and how the majority looks.
There has also a lot of strong class inequity in Africa, so there were a few elites who got the lower classes to do everything and eat less, unlike the European ruling classes in general. I think that’s why force feeding is so common in Mauritania.

I've been wanting to try out some y2k fashion lately but I think I'd feel uncomfortable, I'm skinny but part of me says I'm not skinny enough for the fashion, I know that's a horrible thing to think but it's still in the back of my mind.
My mom was never comfortable with her body size and growing up in the early 2000s kinda warped how I saw my body. When I was about 10 I gained a little weight, because that's just what happens when you grow, family members would say "aw you're so chubby now" and touch my belly. I would hear my mom complain about her body witch made me think there was something wrong with being fat and if I was chubby that ment there was something wrong with my body too. The strange thing is I never thought there was anything wrong with other people being fat because everyone's body's are different but for some reason I thought there was something wrong with mine not being as skinny as possible.
I've really been trying to work on this way of thinking but it's hard to unlearn.

I know it’s wrong for me to say this but I am constantly trying to maintain a healthy weight mostly because my little sister is overweight and I always tell her to stop eating unhealthy she is only 12 and always makes me seem like an ignorant I really hate feeling like I’m the bad person for looking after her and telling her to be healthy at this point I’m scared of even telling her anything she constantly body shames me for being “too thin” it really affects me as person I lack of confidence now. Some one help me please (I don’t mean to offend anyone Plz Love Yourself!)

Well for one, it is one thing to be healthy and another to maintain a healthy weight. You might be putting unrealistic standards on yourself without realizing it. As for your sister, instead, tell her to not be unhealthy. You should be showing her a few ways to eat healthly and do low impact excising. However, I think think this should be a conversation your parent should be having with her, not you. I don't think you should be taking that responsibility. Also if you're having issues with your weight. I can't see how you're having a healthy conversation with her about hers. She is 12 too, so her body is starting to change. Other than helping her prepare healthier meals and showing her easy ways to excise, not by force. I really think you need to leave her be on this. You might be doing more damage than good. I really think you should focus on yourself in a positive way. You seem way too hard on yourself. Be a little selective on who you listen to and question genuinely why they say what they say. You said things about your sister's weight and she became defensive by saying something about your weight. You may need to apologize to her at some point because it seems you offended her. However, I was not there and this is based on what I read from you. Also, focus on clothes, colors, and styles that make you feel good and work for your body. You will not only feel confident but comfortable too. Trends are great for exploration but don't get stuck on chasing them.

Well I grew up in the 90s being Mexican American and I can tell you exactly what happened .
So back then white girl where completely flat 😅, we use to make fun of them for not having no booty lol, so this represented what the fashion and media was .
Time pass we started getting celebrities like Selena ,Jennifer Lopez , girls next door and others witch obviously where extra curby . Little by little this was being accepted in America, shit look at it now, every one has a booty 😂

I Remember being 13 and standing behind a lady in checkout at Walmart. She dropped something and went to pick it up, and her red thong just slapped me in the face!. I was like "Omigosh I did Not need to see that!". Like hello people that may be sexy in the club, but in Walmart there might be a MINOR standing behind you!.

i hate it, it just became "normal" to be vegetarian or vegan, no matter how it made you look and now, there are so many videos about "why i stopped being vegan"
when i decided to stop eating meat in 2003, they said it is "just a phase". they never took me for real (i was 8 years old) and i got "just the salad" i hope it isn't going to return to be like this.

Being fat is critical for health... It's not a thing to be proud of and same goes with being way too skinny ... Anything that is too much is unhealthy
