100°F Heat, Waterfalls, & Bridge of the Gods: Father-Son PCT (Part 10)

- Welcome to Part 10 of our father-son hike of the Pacific Crest Trail! In this video we continue our journey on the PCT from Mount Hood all the way to Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks, Oregon! This leg of our journey was scorching hot but also had some of the coolest waterfalls and rivers we had seen yet! There is a sad announcement at the end of this video but you'll have to watch to see. We started hiking on June 26, 2023 and this video covers days 48 to 54 (August 12-18, 2023). I hope you enjoy our journey and follow along for the entire three month trip!

Biggest mistake I see you all making is not unbuckling sternum and waist straps when crossing any river so if you fall in, you can slide out of your pack.
That is something we considered but there are actually two trains of thought on that idea. The first is what you shared. If you unbuckle your pack then you can slide out easier if you fall in the water. The second thought is that unbuckling changes your balance significantly enough that it could make you more likely to fall in the river in the first place. That’s why we stayed buckled up. Shifting all the weight to your shoulders when you are used to having your pack weight distributed evenly between your shoulders and hips changes your balance. Not to mention the pack is less secure just hanging on your shoulders and the pack will shift more easily as you twist and move your body. That’s why we stayed buckled. It’s really a personal choice for each hiker. Also, the rivers we crossed were rarely deeper than our knees. If we fell in, the packs would not drag us underwater. However, on the California section of the PCT there are river crossings that are pretty deep and a fall with a pack on could make it hard to keep your head above water.
@HikeCampClimbTalks fell in the North Fork of the Sac river outside of Mt. Shasta years ago and it was winter. Had 45 pounds of gear in my pack and it drug me under and I managed to stay calm and get out of my pack. So I'll take the dynamic of being unstable verses drowning
