My favorite part of s1 was simply the way it looked. The visuals in splatoon 1 are different from the other 2 games in a way i cant describe, but i loved the way it looked

It's the lighting engine! The lighting in Splatoon 1 definitely has "Mario in unreal energy" but I feel it works a lot more in here, gives it a weirdly nostalgic look and makes it feel like the game is constantly in this weird "summer break/sunny Sunday fun with friends" energy, which imo fits a lot with splatoons identity(or at least it did back then)
Splatoon 1 had a Nickelodeon vibe, if that makes sense. Not just because the colors were similar to the type of neon Nickelodeon's orange and green were. But, it felt like the assets were ripped from a kids' game show and stylized with a 90s/2000s aesthetic. Maybe more like the set of one of Nick's sitcoms, where everything looks clean and wacky and maybe even a little bit bland (in a good way).
What made Splatoon 1 fun for me personally, is that even if it was broken in terms of kits and balancing, I still had a ton of fun trying out every weapon, every kit, and finding out their use in battle. While going to S2/S3 It just feels like the game forces me to play a specific set of weapons or else ill lose the game and do terrible.
Agreed. Splatoon 1 was only considered broken because of a few issues, some easy in hindsight, others not so much. #1 special weapon balance. #2 ability balance. The invincibility special of bubbler and kraken needed to be fixed. Neither could have been done except in a new game (kraken, not so much, but definitely bubbler). The deadly squad of quick respond, damage up/defense up, and stealth jump made splatoon 1 difficult to play. Yes, you could have reworked stealth jump and quick respond, but damage up/defense up simply couldn't happen. The only possible scenario I could see that happened is if defense up got the same buffs as later exclusive abilities that came in splatoon 2 and 3, but even that sounds drastic.
Yup, I fondly remember the H3-D from Splatoon 2 and wanted to give it a go in S3 after not playing it for a while. All I was met with in Open were braindead shooters or Tri-sloshers and Explosher which hard counters H3-D. I just went back to playing Vdualies.

As someone who hasn’t played this game before, I feel a major sense of dread and sadness that I never got to experience it, but am glad I can still play newer installments.

I'm glad I got a Wii U and Splatoon 1 this past December so I could get a chance to play it, but I'm quite sad I didn't use those 3 months to their fullest, I wasted most of them and didn't experience it as fully as I could have.
Luci absolutely popped off on this video, I can't imagine how much time it must have taken to make. It was all completely worth it though, I was genuinely tearing up at the amount of nostalgia packed into these only 6 minutes

Thank you for everything Splatoon, I will miss you with all my heart and soul. I remember pre-ordering you as a young boy in 2015, and played you for hundreds of hours and hours on end. The sheer excitement, thrills and joy I experienced from you were unfathomable, and I couldn't be more grateful. Split & Splat was always my favourite track in the game, and to this day, my favourite in the series. It was a pleasure to experience the final few hours with players from all across the world on the Nintendo Network. We squid party'd our way to the disconnection message, and will keep on doing so through your memory. You are a staple of my life. And of course, forever and ever, you will always stay fresh to me :,)
I definitely enjoyed how wacky and immensely POWERFUL everything felt in this game. The specials, some of the main weapons. They just felt so damn powerful and ridiculous it was amazing

Splatoon 1 came at a time where all my friends were into Call of Duty, leaving me behind by myself I didn’t like those sorts of games, and when I first saw a trailer for it on TV, I marked down its release date cause I fallen in love it it at first sight, and the chaotic, broken gameplay made me love it all the more. I have followed the series ever since, keeping up with it as I grew up with it. I’ll miss the first entry with all my heart.

Gorgeous edit work. What a send off. I briefly played a level or two of storymode. . .it was my younger sister and dad that played a bit of actual Splatoon 1. Which, incidentally made me get Splatoon 2 for my sister, who no longer had interest. . . now I play competitively if on the very bottom edge of that scale. I appreciate where it all started.
I'll miss this game so much. It acompanied all my childhood and is still the game I spent the most amount of hours... I was revisiting this game every month and... man... 🙋♂️😭

I only ever got to play the original ONCE, and it was well into Splatoon 2’s lifespan by that point, but it got me hooked. I chose Splatoon 2 over Breath of the Wild when I got my Switch a few months later, and got S3 on Release Day. I’ve never been a super hardcore competitive player, but it’s been my favorite shooter game ever since, by far. I never really had the opportunity to dig into S1, and that’ll always make me a little sad. But I got to play it once, at least.
Documenting all of the unbalanced mechanics in this game for one last time while saying farewell shows an admirable amount of dedication,because you've been here since the very beginning yet you prevail and inspire ,looking for ways to brighten up the community all the same .Thanks for the final goodbye.
Absolutely loved how broken and overtuned this game was. Slosher Burst Bomb would be cuckoo bananas in any other game but never felt cheap in this game because I would be dodging Krakens, Bubblers, and E-Liters looking at me. It was like a game of superhero kits duking it out

Splatoon 1 was such a massive case of "when everyone's super" that ut was a blast to play. The maps were amazing too, so much bigger and more vertical with loads of routes. I hear soloq was also a lot more fun since there isn't nearly as many things that inscentivize coordinated team play (both the specials and lack of clam blitz lmao).
I was like 10 at the time splatoon 1 came out and didn't keep up with patch notes and the like all the way until 3 came out lol, so it's interesting looking back and learning what the actual meta was like outside of my own experience of playing turf war and avoiding ranked like the plague because I was scared of losing, making gear sets based on what I though looked "cool" without any regard for abilities, intentionally causing overtime in battle dojo so me and a friend could roleplay, 1v1, and play hide and seek as much as we wanted, refighting Octavio a million times, thinking dual squelcher was just better than jet because I didn't realize it had lower range and damage, shooting straight down to pain with chargers (and missing all my shots), not using motion at all before forcing myself to learn it in 2, watching [weapon] in a nutshell videos several times over, complaining about how slow levelling up took (I never got past like 32), staring at the great zapfish in piranha pit and the blooper/octorock sprites in urchin, not realizing agents 1 and 2 were the squid sisters until the game basically spelled it out, and of course wondering if it's possible to play as octolings. Rip splatoon 1, my first ever shooter game, may your respawn be quick and your jump be stealthy

A distinct memory from Splatoon 1 competitive play was one of the finals in the AUNZ qualifiers. Chargers had no piercing, so ScarthAce *body blocked* Latias' shots to get an overtake.
I don't know if adding piercing was a good thing, but I always like to think that their addition was a direct response to that moment.
Can't wait to see the Splatoon 3 version of this in a year or two...

I miss this game's couch coop. I have such fond memories of going to my friend's house in like middle school before I had any idea of anything about gaming and just doing 1v1s against him.
One thing I shall always love about Splatoon 1 is how the environment feels. From the stages to the Plaza, it doesn't feel like we're on a battle ground with different mechanics to deal with or a cheesy hubworld to make the game feel 'livable'. It feels like two groups of friends managed to set up a casual turf fight under the officials' noses in random locations, to have fun after a long day of shopping or playing arcade games. I could probably write an essay on how even in the heat of battle, you can spot the life within the game and shape a world from what little you can see/interact. But I'll end it here.
nostalgia hits hard a veteran i remember staring into the sky for everyone who u knew had stealth jump, quick respawn cycle for tower was so annoying, my last game of splatoon 1 was blackberry (what is it called) skatepack splatzones win felt so nice to end on a win rip toast "to always my favourite game from my childhood you died to soon my friend and now rest peacefully in our hearts"🥂

As someone who's strictly played this entry in the series so far (due mostly to me not owning a Switch until, like... last week), this was a nice way to cap off this game's lifespan and a fun look back at just how chaotic and broken this game was. It was very, very stupid, but also a lot of fun and I will miss it very much.

Seekers being such a meme sub weapon is what made them my favourite in S1. Seeker Rush was on one single weapon and it was PEAK on mahi zones (the most seeker-rushable mapmode in existence). A single Seeker is easy to dodge? Try jumping over them when there's 6 more coming everyone's way. And it PAINTED

1:25 in my 7 years of playing this game I NEVER saw this hidden spot!
My favourite part is likely the waiting screen mini games. I miss working away at squid jump and the like while waiting for a match. The gameplay pacing feels good but the invincibility specials I remember became a bit of a frustration back in the day.
I got 4 hours and 25 minutes pass server shut down last night and was taken out by a power outage. It was fun Splatoon 1.

Splatoon 1 pretty much shaped who I am now, I didn’t start playing splatoon seriously until late in 2’s life span but I remember getting S1 for the first time back when I was literally 9 years old and absolutely loving it, it’s going to be hard to say bye to this game

Even though I didn’t truly get into the series until 3 (I did own and play the first two games, just didn’t do any multiplayer really) I’ll still never forget the sense of wonder and amazement that the very first Global Testfire gave me. I’ll never forget you Splatoon 1
This game had a hold on me from the first time my friend showed me it in 2015. Since then I have fluctuated between squid and kid nonstop. I met some of my best friends online now nearly a decade ago and splatoon introduced me to shooters and cooperative play. I will miss it. Nothing compares to the fun each special was in this game.
Having quick respawn Actually Function(from a casual standpoint) sounds wonderful. Not so sure about frame 1 actionable invincibility though. Or that tower cheese.

I got this game in Feb and got to level 13 before forgetting about it for two months played one more time two days before it shut down. I loved using Octobrush and Kelpcharger.
Also I thought it was already shut down untill watching you.
Everything was broken yet it was more fun than its sequels LMAO
I'm hoping that once splatoon 1 is old enough to be nostalgic it'll be put on whatever the console of the future has in place of virtual console and we can all have fun revisiting its brokenness again.
Weirdly even though I was there from day one with the global testfire, I don't have much nostalgia for Splatoon 1. Going back and playing it one last time was fun for sure, but even ignoring all the broken game mechanics it was kinda hard to come back to (for me at least). As much as we joke about the series just being the same game each time and not getting enough content, it's insane just how far it's come and just how much of the core gameplay has improved. So long Splatoon 1, you won't be forgotten

IF you DID run Quick Jump, Cherry would be a good candidate because it was not dependent on non-Quick Respawn gear like Run Speed and Damage Up. Some Quick Jump makes your total respawn time less (when jumping back in) than only QR with Stealth Jump. Cherry can work Ink Res which would make your jump even quicker without the jump delay with Stealth Jump. We never talk about Quick Jump but I had some gear with it for that purpose in the new account I published for the closure. I love your S1 stuff, maybe the Pretendo scene will pan out and you can make more content for it.
Whenever I see a stealth jump, funny enough the #1 way I spawn camp them is if I see their shadow on the floor while jumping
Never got the chance to play S1, but it is quite literally one of the most solid bases a franchise could ever hope to jump off and get big from. This franchise will hold a near and dear place in my heart, even starting with S3 being my first game. There's so much I've learned from watching old S1 solo queue & comp vids that have made me the player I wish I could've been back in November of 2022. o7 to an industry behemoth!

i saw lots of people wearing the default s1 outfit while playing splatoon 3 today..
I owned it, never really played it. Even bought a replacement disc because somehow mine stopped working, no scratch, no defect (so did Mario 3D). I did play a little but the lack of squid roll was what made me not re-visit it. The levels though, so unique, they need to bring them back to Splatoon 3 (as long as Nintendo fixes the map rotation, same map out of 2 10x in a row, seriously?). The S1 levels had more of a paintball arena style which really adds to the charm.
