    Thank you for a proper review (ie, taking the bike down some proper gnar).
    I've watched MANY youtube reviews of this bike and there seems to be a common theme
    1) Just standing there reviewing the bike specs (which I can do myself from reading the Trek slash webpage)
    2) or taking this bike down some weak ass green flow trails
    You actually rode some proper gnar and worked the bike
    AND
    Talked about whether you'd buy it with your own money.
    This is much appreciated.

      Thanks man! That's exactly what we were going for. We wanted to ride these bikes like they were our own bikes and ride the stuff we normally ride to see if we would want the slash for ourselves as our local shop and mountain picked them up so we wanted to see what they could do. We definitely weren't disappointed.

    Sweet video. I also ride a Stumpjumper Evo with Cascade Link and and air shock so it's interesting hearing your perspective on the Slash. I still feel like my Evo could use more mid stroke support and it's something I'll be looking for when I get a new bike. Thankfully the cascade link came out and fixed the rear suspension somewhat. It seems that the Slash may be more supportive in big hits and heavy compressions. That snack hole is also a nice bonus.

    Now that I'm on the '21 Meta TR, I'm really missing the ABP on my old Remedy. I never had to worry about pedal kickback or the suspension locking up when braking over chunk. There's a compression after a slow speed roll at our "local" bike park that never bothered me before, but now it makes me lose my footing every time. Left ankle starts hurting after long days of riding too. I love the geo and build quality of the Meta, but I might consider getting the Slash for 2022.

I feel more confident on steep technical stuff with the geo of the Meta, but I really miss the ABP for high speed chunk. I thought it was all marketing BS, but there's really something to it. A mullet slash with a steeper seat tube would be the dream though. 😍 Fingers crossed for 2022. 🤞

    Great review of downhill applications! If this bike. Most are interested in how it can battle the more complex terrain and this literally shows it.
    This however is not a true enduro review as I don't think any actual pedalling occurred being lifted. I'll find out directly in a few days how it rides climbing and over obstacles. These guys know their geometry and differences in specs between bikes and parts. Thank you gents.

    • @Projectnortheast

      Vs. Enduro is because I compared it to my current bike at the time... a specialized enduro. Not the discipline of enduro riding...

  • @Alex-md6bu
    @Alex-md6bu Před 3 lety +1

    Good to see actual ride impressions rather than a brochure reading, comparing the spec issues with a top their model is a tricky one, if you had a 9.9 that was speced more similarly to the s works bike you are used to then it would come with the high speed compression adjustments, and most of your gripes with the suspension front and back are centred around air volume adjustments which given 6 days not 6 hours with the bike you would be able to figure out.... comparing a more mid range bike with a flagship one and then calling out spec issues isn't the manufacturers fault at all!!

    • @Projectnortheast
      @Projectnortheast  Před 3 lety +1

      Well heres the thing... we were trying to find something we didn't like about the slash to give an honest review. I wasn't directly comparing my custom built sworks with spec of an XT trek. However you are mistaken on the suspension. The XT slash gets the same shock as the 9.9 which is the super deluxe. I dont think it was the issue for me, I think the only issue was the seemingly lighter weight tires and lack of inserts which again isn't a gripe just a preference. I mean, I have a slash on order if that tells you anything 😉

      @Projectnortheast  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! I feel like the yeti and the slash are very similar geometry wise but I think the suspension characteristics are slightly different. Both perform awesome but one thing I noticed alot vs any bike previously is the active braking pivot that works really good and was surprised how good it worked on the slash when coming up to those bike park braking bumps. I think the trek overall somehow is poppy and playful but yet still planted in situations like that. The yeti is great but feel the new slash edges it out now that the sb150 suspension design is a few years old

    @the_vids Před 3 lety +1

    Great review! The bike sounds great! Just want to know about the "if not racing" part? Is it just about the parts, like lower spec fork, or does the frame and linkage also fall apart? I know trek sometimes have some bolts losen for no reason?

    • @Projectnortheast
      @Projectnortheast  Před 3 lety +1

      So our comments about not racing is if you wanted to ride the thing right out of the box and do nothing to it. Its an awesome bike as is... but we felt if you want that competitive edge for racing tire inserts were a must (no bike comes with them though) and definitely needs beefier tires like a 2 ply tire etc. And yes possibly a higher end fork and possibly some tuning of the rear shock. I have to say though we were very critical in this area as we usually custom build our bikes to meet our needs so its no surprise we would want to change a few things. Overall though we thought the bike was seriously spec'ed very well... but kinda like we were reaching for something to complain about 😅

    It looks like you had good traction with the SE5/4 tires, what did you find that was undesired and make you run Vittoria? Maybe try swapping the tires around, the 2.6 is superb on the rear for extra bottom out protection and then run the 2.4 up front. The G5 has the same pattern as the SE series tires but is available in a 2.5 which you may appreciate due to the downhill casing and a more point and shoot, less overall sidewall roll.

    Hey guys, great review! I just rented the 9.8 at highland yesterday. SAME first impressions. When you hit a jump, you just FLY! With that said, I realized how much air was in the tires. Thanks!!!

    • @Projectnortheast
      @Projectnortheast  Před 3 lety +1

      No difference really. I mean, air pressure in your tires is not going to cause the bike to pop. What you were feeling was just sluggishness from having too little PSI in the tires after you let some air out. I would never run that low PSI when riding highland even remotely aggressive, it's just asking for a broken rim or atleast a pinch flat. Run the tyres down and then swap out for something else.
      I find the SE4 a bit squirrely on damp rocks and roots and lacks traction on loose climbs. The SE5 I don't like the lack of side transition knobs. On my 9.8 2019 Slash I went to a Magic Mary upfront and a Hans Dampf out back and I am much happier with these tyres for the tech slippery riding I do. Now riding -8 Centigrade in the forests round me on forest cutter paths and they are holding up really well and fairly controllable on the ice and snow covered roots, rocks and tree debris from the forest harvesters.
      The rear shock I livened up with a Meg Neg and the 36 Performance Fork I put a Luft Klappe in which woke it up. Now I have gone to a X01 drive train and not sure about upgrading the bike or sticking with it another season. The 2021 sounds like a good ride though.

    Nice review! I found the Slash to be really poppy as well. Pretty agile bike. Biggest issue with it for me, that I didn't hear you mention, is how slack that STA is. At 6'2" it's just too slack for trail riding/climbing. Bummer.

    • @Projectnortheast
      @Projectnortheast  Před 2 lety

      I didn't mention it because it doesn't bother me at all and didn't notice a difference between my last 3 bikes and the slash in that regard. I would say the slash still climbs better. My kindof riding with the slash is not trail riding... thats what a fuel EX is for. My slash goes 2 directions, up, and down. It's not a trail bike it's a burly enduro bike made to ride mountains

    • @JLambinator
      @JLambinator Před 2 lety

      @@Projectnortheast fair enough. In AZ we have a lot of undulating terrain. Punchy tech climbs with gnarly decents. Causes a lot of guys to push their Enduro bike into trail bike use.

    • @Projectnortheast
      @Projectnortheast  Před 2 lety +2

      @@JLambinator so, I've ridden a ton in AZ and completely understand where your coming from. I would argue this... what is the gnarliest stuff your riding in AZ? Sedona? SoMo? Mt Lemmon? As I've ridden all those areas on 67 degree HA bikes and would argue nothing in those areas really warrants more than a Fuel EX with an oversized fork and piggy back shock and would make for a spritely brawler. I personally love my slash I think it climbs great and at 6'2" I would think you'd be on a large for sure. Have you test rode one? and what else are you looking at? Pivot I'm assuming since it's local?

    • @JLambinator
      @JLambinator Před 2 lety +1

      @@Projectnortheast All those areas. And I agree, I've ridden them all on a Ripley, no problem. Sedona is slow tech mostly, although pretty steep sometimes, so while the extra travel can smooth stuff out, it's not needed.
      As you know, SoMo can be ridden on a hard tail, but it depends on whose rear you're trying to stick to. Natty and Geronimo runs can be fast through the chunck if the bike allows, and there are some lots of bonus lines, some that are big booters and drops on Natty, 24th etc that are too much for smaller travel bikes. At least for my skill.
      I've only been mountain biking for about 4 years, but come from a dirt bike background. Figuring out what I like... so far I generally like bikes between 480-490ish reach. (475 and 495 have felt ok, but are on the far end of what I've liked). Steeper seat tube angles generally feel best when climbing, especially as the reach pushes past 490, since 650mm or longer TT feels a bit too long. I also really like a higher BB for the rocks out here... 345+ which can more easily be found on bigger bikes, but still the Wreckoning, Slash, Enduro are kinda rare with their higher BB's.
      I'd like to end up with lively 130-14o rear bike and an Enduro 29er. But, for example, I'm loading our MTB van, and the wife and kids and are taking the next 4 weeks or so to drive from Phoenix to Montana and back, and will ride along the way in Ut, ID and MT. That will include long peddaly days and lift access days.... so always looking for that one bike to take, since we already fill up the 7 bike velocirax we have!

    • @JLambinator
      @JLambinator Před 2 lety +2

      @@Projectnortheast Oh, to answer your question, my previous bike was a GG Megatrail, then GG Smash, Then Ripmo AF. Have demoed, borrowed or swaped with buddies the Ripley, Evil Offering, Kona Process 153, new RM Altitude, Norco Range, Niner Rip9. Very brief peddle on a Slash.
      I thought the GEO on the slashes looked great; higher BB, moderate CS, long but not ridiculous reach, short seat tube, low stand over. Just felt really slack STA when I sat on it. Heard it rides well. Could be wrong.... may need to try it on a proper ride.
      Interested in a few of the above, as well as the new Wreckoning, Nukeproof Mega, Canyon Spectral... I mean, geo charts and bike reviews are my toilet reading/watching so... ya know :)
