  • Here we are, with the final game in this Dept. Heaven Retrospective. Gungnir came out at the worst possible time, and was not received well critically, but was that rating well-deserved?
    Underneath a disastrous launch lies an incredibly fun and well thought-out game. A fitting conclusion to the Dept. Heaven Franchise. Gungnir: Inferno of The Demon Lance and the War of Heroes might be a ridiculous title, but maybe that's just suitable for this final entry in the series.

    Dept Heaven felt like it was leading up to something, I wanted to see all these character interact , have them all go in one crazy , insane , lore indept story , as a Singular team. Ein , Yggdra , Maria , Gulieg , all to find out what Sting had cooking in the back. *Sigh* Oh well

  • @soratheorangejuicemascot5809

    This game is the most replayed rpg I have played. The classes and weapons are just so fun, strategizing aspect is so good.

    I put the Sting studios in one word,Troll. The Sting studios is a bunch of troll people. Riviera is trolling the decisions,Yggdra Union is the moral recovery,Kitn is about the true ending and Gungnir is the refined AI in the advance difficulty (and more in nightmare difficulty). Even the other games of Sting got somethings trollings things in the games.

    10:30 you gave me an idea on what I might do on my next run. I will go with 3 priestess, 2 assassin and 1 thrower(I atleast need a long ranged initiator aside from Elise).

    The only reason Gungnir has a Grimdark ending is that it's clear that it's a half-finished game(because they likely ran out of time and money) and not because they were necessarily going for some supposed sophisticated deeper meaning with the ending(not that there wouldn't be otherwise it just likely wouldn't be as depressing). Even if they were going for a depressing ending it makes no sense for it to end as abruptly as it did and leave plot threads and character backstories unexplained. It's clear they slapped their two endings together at the last second and tried to explain it away by trying to claim they were going for a deep nuanced depressing take the whole time.
    It's an absolute tragedy and pisses me off to no end that they removed the asgard/underworld/supernatural elements they were clearly going to include and as a result turned it into just another generic political intrigue story. It's a massive bait and switch and a slap in the face. The political intrigue is not bad of itself and is even necessary but including only them removes that unique flavor that makes the Dept Heaven series special. It would be like if they only had Lyn's route in Fire Emblem 7.

      Yeah, it feels like a sequel hook which sadly never happened

      To say that I was incredibly infuriated and disappointed with the direction Gungnir's story took, is an understatement. And I absolutely DESPISED the fact that Robertus was still alive by the end!

    I remember playing Yggdra Union when i was younger but never finshing due to how burned out i got from overload of info my child brainlet could store(english not being my 1st ceirtainly dindt helped). Your retrospective not only reklindled my interest in trying the game again but also the entire franchise at some point. That said, did you ever played or heard of the Summon NIght franchise? Specifically the swordcraft spin-offs? 2D Tales-esque combat with visual novel elements are unique. Especially for GBA game. If memory serves correctly they also had interesting development history but the details are foggy in my head.

      I did play Summon Night Swordcraft Story 1&2, I then tried to play Summon Night 5&6, but can't say I ever got too interested in actually finishing it. No idea what I would think about Swordcraft Story nowadays, but I had a good time with it back in the day.

      @@Zyraizo Funny that i had a very similar experience with SM6 when it released. There's also a 3rd one in the swordcraft franchise that is a japan exclusive.
      There is a rough fantranslation (which its team has been going back and forth with members for almost a decade by now?) of the game first day which dropped a open beta last year. but i havent had the chance to try it out for myself yet though

    While i feel like Gungnir was a big letdown for me, mostly because of the plot details that never get a satisfactory conclusion like Elisa, Gungnir, the Astral Heir and that one diviner chick you meet once that info dumps you then you never see again except for one cutscen, i also didn't feel like it was a waste of time although it definitely is my least favorite out of the 4 main Dept Heaven games (not my overall least favorite to, that's probably Gloria union)

    • @Zyraizo
      @Zyraizo  Před rokem +2

      Yeah, the story is a big bump for most people. initially I was fairly critical about all the flaws, but after having gone through it again, I felt like there was stuff to love about it even if the story was a tad bit questionable.

    • @adrianthenormie20
      @adrianthenormie20 Před rokem +1

      @@Zyraizo yeah, the stuff that they actually finished was pretty good, i personally loved Robertus as kind of a deconstruction of the "noble general from the enemy kingdom" trope you see in some games like FE, were he at first looks like a good guy fighting for a wrong cause but as the game goes on he becomes more hateable but for the right reasons

      @@adrianthenormie20 I really... REALLY wish that the game didn't place all of its bets on a sequel that never existed. Because freaking damnit! I was so frustrated that you never a proper chance to beat the ever living crap out of Robertus!
