  • Which water meter is better, a mechanical or an electronic meter?
It’s been over ten years since electronic water meters were introduced in the U.S. for residential applications. Many utilities are using electronic meters for commercial and industrial applications.
However, the number of utilities adopting electronic water meters for residential applications continues to grow but is still only a small percentage of utilities.
As an interesting comparison, think about what happened in the electric utility market during the early 2000s, the industry change from electro-mechanical to electronic meters almost overnight.
This video discusses the differences between the two types of meters, mechanical and electronic and provides you with practical guidance on choosing the right meter type for your utility.

I know a company that uses IOT technology that can measure under the accuracy curve of mechanical meters (measure under the very low flows), and also help water utilities recover lost revenue by using analysis and their equipment to find faults in mechanical meters. They have recouped a ton of revenue for a lot of different cities.

Very informative, makes it easier to explain to builders the options

Its a general opinion that the accuracy of electronic meters does not change over period of time since there are no moving parts. But what about the shift in calibration or any bias expected in the signal processing in electronic components used in the meter?

Thank you, Morrice, for a very clear and concise explanation of water meter differences. My application is measuring sap flow from maple trees for my maple syrup production. Would you recommend an electronic meter for this...since there are sometimes small particulates in the sap lines coming from the trees through the vacuum tubing? If so, what type of electronic meter would you recommend? Thanks, John at Brown Lake Maple

Morrice- Great video! Isn't another difference between mechanical and elecronic meters is that the air that travels through the pipe will be measured along with water by a mechanical meter, since it picks up volume and doesnt know to differientiate between the volume of air and water, while the electronic meter only registers the flow of water since it only measures the velocity of flow? what do you think? Am I wrong?

I saw a video, in which the tech used a blow drier to operate an electronic meter. How come? Does this mean that when the pipes are empty (no water) that air pressure will cause the meter to show water was consumed?

Hello, do you work at all with residential sub-metering? I would love to get some of your thoughts.

I pray that you are still reading the comments on here. We need some help and some advice. In the village where w live they are trying to force Smart Water meters on us. They don't have a clue what they are. The town guy told us that we could have the radio reader put on a pole outside of our home and connect it with a wire underground. When i asked him where the meter would be he said, in your crawl space under your house. Am I crazy or would this not protect us at all because the meter would still be under our feet and transmitting to the reader? It is an AMI iPERL by Sensus. I hope to get a response soon as they are going to switch our water of end of March. thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Selecting the right meter should always start with understanding the required minimum, maximum and average flow rates. Once understood, refer to our online sizing guide found at: www.badgermeter.com/meter-selector/
