  • New Follow-Up Video: • Using Meter-In & Meter...
    When you're looking to control the motion of a hydraulic actuator, you will encounter the terms "meter-in" and "meter-out". We show you what they mean, the difference between them, situations where they work well, and what can go wrong.
    We make all the interactive animations ourselves, and they're available online at www.lunchboxsessions.com

    Sir, you mentioned on metering out in both directions would cause a significant increase in pressure on the rod end. What it not be better to meter out the bottom end and meter in the rod end? Thank you for any information.

    can you please tell me if my Marine hydraulic crane traverse motor or slewing motor runs jerky when traversing what might be the problem with this?

    • @lunchboxsessions
      @lunchboxsessions  Před 7 lety +1

      I'll try to help as best I can. Half of the battle in hydraulic system troubleshooting is knowing exactly what 'normal' is. So it will definitely help if you provide even more detail about how the machine has functioned right up until recently and then what exactly you are observing now in the faulted state. You said "traverse motor OR slewing motor runs jerky when traversing" (upper case letters - mine). Does this mean that the traverse function is jerky when traversing only, and that when slewing while traversing, that it is now the slewing motor that is jerky? Are there pressure gauges on the hydraulic system ? If so, do you have any pressure reading data from before and now during the fault? - Carl

    • @udayanpaul8042
      @udayanpaul8042 Před 7 lety

      Hi tnx for reverting back! Actually the crane it self jerky while slewing the slewing motor foundation is OK. Do you think that any problems with the slewing ring or bearing ? Shall I conduct a rocking test. Or might be some other fault in the system line itself ? And none pressure gauge fitted over it.

    • @lunchboxsessions
      @lunchboxsessions  Před 7 lety +1

      If there is a hydraulic system schematic, please email it to info@lunchboxsessions.com. If there is no hydraulic schematic, I would recommend that you try to obtain one from the crane manufacturer, and or have a schematic made up for you. The schematic is an important tool for troubleshooting.
      There are a good number of possibilities for this behavior, and yes sometimes a mechanical binding fault outside of the hydraulic system, is the cause. I once had a client with a hydraulic slewing motor that would stall, and every few weeks they would continue to increase the relief valve pressure setting, well beyond the machine manufacturer's specification (very dangerous) to get the motor to turn. They believed there was a hydraulic fault. They later discovered that the slewing bearing lube system had failed. The slewing motor itself may have an internal fault. If there are cross-port relief valve between the motor ports, there may be a fault in them. The list of potential faults is long, if we are just speaking theoretically.
      It is difficult for me to say exactly what you should do next without specific knowledge of your machine. Is the crane manufacturer still in business? If so, you will want to get them involved. They will have safe and best practices for your next steps.
      If you have access to a hydraulics maintenance/troubleshooting expert who can come and help you at the site, they will most likely spend some time making sure that the hydraulic system overall is adjusted correctly (pressure control, pump controls, flow settings etc.) before diving into the specific sub-circuit for the slewing system. - Carl

    in your example (3:57) is that a double acting valve or a single acting valve?

    • @lunchboxsessions
      @lunchboxsessions  Před 6 lety

      I'm not sure I understand your question. At 3:57 the 4 port, 3 position directional control valve has returned to it's closed center. It is centered by springs. Is that the valve you are referring to? That valve has two solenoids, one on each end. The solenoids are the valve operators and are the rectangles with the diagonal slash on each end of the valve symbol. Only one solenoid is activated at any one time.
