    When I was younger I tackled this job on my own. At this point I no longer have a truck to haul a renter, hard to find help unloading anyway and for my lawn size I can get a commercial service to aerate for not much more than a rental fee. Not to mention it leaves me enough energy to do the rest of my yard work. But nice video post. Clear and thorough. Thanks!

    The local hardware store I rented mine from last weekend gave me 3 options for model which was really nice. I went with the biggest fastest one lol. Turns out that was a “split tine “ model that allowed for turning each half of the tines independently. Only problem is that I would need a trailer to bring it home because it had a center front tire so loading with ramps onto the back of a truck would not work so I upgraded to the toro hydraulic which was easy to just drive straight up a set of ramps into a truck bed. I also rented ramps for 4 bucks extra. Worth every penny lol. No water weights though, just steel weights in the back. You made all good points here!

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před 5 lety +1

      That Toro you rented is very nice I owned one of those for a short time. They are awesome to rent, not the greatest to own, very expensive parts but renting and using it's a dream.

    About to do this tomorrow. First time I aerate since I got irrigation. I know some of my lines aren’t super deep, though not their exact locations. Fingers crossed. Thank you very much. I wouldn't worry too much about sprinkler lines they are almost always 10 inches or so below the ground. Mark the heads and things should be good. The sprinklers themselves are 8 inches or so long and the pipe usually is under them so hopefully you will be fine. Thanks again and good luck with your project,

    You have a couple good points about mowing and marking spray heads or termite traps.
    One suggestion to make this so much easier and way more fun. Purchase an agrifab pull behind core aerator for your lawn tractor. Throw on 3-4 flat cement blocks twist off a beer top and ride that mower around the yard to your hearts content! Then no cleanup, no rental rate, no return and much easier on the back!

    I have a 42” Lawn-tractor (craftsman T1000). Is there a DIY or cheap core aerator attachment I could use with my lawn tractor?
    I’ve been using a “core aerator weighted attachment” that replaces the tines on my tiller. It works fine but is hard to handle (even once a year - haha).

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před 4 lety +1

      Unfortunately I have never had good experience with the tractor models. They work poorly and I know some guys love them but I think they just love what they own. Best bet is to rent one, or do option 2 and buy one using my super discount video from Home Depot. This is how I bought mine: czcams.com/video/nc_7RZ-2y5A/video.html

  • @daddy69plus4
    @daddy69plus4 Před 3 lety

    Couple things to note make sure that your aerator has sharp tins that they don’t look flat.. when you put an aerator on your truck I would put some plywood underneath it can damage your bedliner.
    You also wanna strap it down if you’re transporting yourself it could be a disaster otherwise. And lastly I would irrigate you lawn really good the week that your going to do it for good plugs.

    Thank you so much for this video and for taking the time to show the different aerators and where the weights are located! Would spring/summer be okay to do this? I know it will be a lot hotter but will it adversely impact my lawn to aerate it in warm temps? Is it possible to add seed during spring or will it make the weeds worse? Thank you!

    • @benvoliothefirst
      @benvoliothefirst Před 2 lety +1

      Absolutely okay to do in Spring, less fun in Summer. You'd have to water more because of the heat. Moist ground is easier to aerate. And ABSOLUTELY overseed/starter/fertilize into the holes!

  • @tomjones4318
    @tomjones4318 Před 5 lety

    I guess the tine wheels have to be independent to be able to turn. We are having drought problems. I'd like to get something down into the soil to help retain moisture. I hope top dressing with a compost and biochar mix after aeration will help.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před 5 lety

      It's interesting for the Ryan they have some type of split differential in the tines. All mechaical too, But others like Toro have a hydro unit that turns also that is at a lot of rental shops.

  • @JD-mw8ob

    Thank you and very helpful. You mention leaving the cores loose on the lawn surface as a top dressing . How is that best done without causing them to be compacted or squashed into multiple little soil “ coins “ which stick onto the grass after walking on them or if using machinery ? Do you suggest going over the lawn with a mower mulcher or similar to “blitz” the cores into a powder as a top dressing and if so does that actually work ?

      Thank you, I haven't ever tried the liquid ones. I am skeptical since the golf course industry still uses mechanical and they would want chemical so bad for reduced labor costs. Can't say it doesn't work but I am still out on that one.

    Good Day. I missed out on buying one at Home Depot. Maybe next time. What was that backpack sprayer you used in another of your videos. How did you get it in your truck?

    Thanks for this video. I’ve always felt however; that the timing of aeration comes at a time (Fall); when all the noxious weed seeds are getting dispersed. This is why I’ve generally stayed away from the aeration process altogether. Another belief I have is if ones lawn looks great, don’t aerate!
    I do appreciate and view most of your videos however. You always have a lot of helpful advice and information. Thanks!

      Interesting. For me aeration in combination with my other steps has been a real game changer for me. But if your lawn already looks great than you are obviously doing something right.

    I used a walk behind back in the Spring on our properties. The best way I described it as getting in a ring a wrestling a bull by the horns all day😂😂

    How deep do you core aerate? Does the Ryan machine allow for adjustable aerating depth?

    I like the fact that you use a Ryan with a Honda engine. Best machine going.
    Your turning skills need help. Best way to turn is to (if you're turning left) lift on the left, push down on the right and swing your body around, ahead of the machine essentially getting the machine to pull you around its centre of gravity. I takes practice and admittedly some muscle but if you can master it, you can do a 180 on a dime.

    I prefer a pull behind the rider mower type with about 300# of weight in the tray. The John Deere labeled one has served well and independent core tines on the axle allows turning and backing, plus core depth is adjustable. The cost is low enough to just buy it.

      That's interesting. They stopped selling most of those that have true core and most just have 1/2 sided spoons. I never had great luck with them but you must have a really good one.

      @@SilverCymbal Model# PA-48JD and the only vendor right now seems to be Home Depot. Plus a tray full of 12" foundation blocks.

    Fall? Okay, great! If you have Bermuda grass like I do, still aeration is best to do in the fall?
