This was an amazing video! The tips you gave are the reason I love the internet. You're like that knowledgeable guy at work who doesn't talk down to you, but rather says "This may make it easier!". Thank you!
Thanks for the valuable tips. I bought this home just 4 months ago and now have a lawn in the back yard to care for...which I've never done. I will be renting an aerator soon and your tips will help.
This is awesome!! Aerated for first time last year and never knew you should fill front end with water!!! Well if you don't know now you know!!! Prepped lawn alrdy (Fri). Can't wait to aerate on Saturday!!! Thanks again 👍🏾
When I was younger I tackled this job on my own. At this point I no longer have a truck to haul a renter, hard to find help unloading anyway and for my lawn size I can get a commercial service to aerate for not much more than a rental fee. Not to mention it leaves me enough energy to do the rest of my yard work. But nice video post. Clear and thorough. Thanks!
We are currently pending on our first house, I’m so glad I found this channel because I need all the help with lawn care that I can get! Great videos and easy to remember.
Thank you so much, everything in my videos is always designed to help you do more yourself. Glad you are finding these helpful. Thanks for watching.
Thanks man Im definitely aerating in the fall . Thanks for the details i was very curious as to how. Very clear now. Hats off
Great and simple explanation on getting the right machine and how to operate!
i like all your videos that focus on making yard work easier
Thank you! I am a new lawn owner, and don't know much of anything. This was really helpful!
Silver cymbal, thank you so much. I have been trying to get my yard looking nice and sharp. Your videos have helped me out a ton.
Thank you so much, glad that they have been helpful.
"every hole is beneficial" a man of culture
My week consists of a Tenacity application Wednesday, core aeration on Saturday with a little seed/fertilizer combo...life is good!!! Gotta get it down before the cooler temps hit here in PA. Great channel for all of us landscapers/green thumbs out there!
Thank you so much. It sounds like you have some fun project work ahead. It's so nice when the temps finally come down it bit from summer.
Wow, I wish I had seen this video before I areated my lawn. Thanks for the tips. I'll certainly use them the next time. I overseeded and I already see a difference.
Glad to help and so glad your lawn is looking good
Great instructions! Also thank you for speaking clearly.
I bought a GREEN SCOTT 🌱 lawnmower aeration wheel I can’t believe how great the product works! I’ll never need to rent again!
Thanks! Never heard about the water tank before!
Great video ! Thank these machines are complicated but now I have a better understanding. Thanks
Thank you very much, I appreciate you watching my video
You're a good man sir. Thanks for all your work.
I appreciate that thank you for watchig
Another valuable, unbiased video. Thank you!
I really appreciate that thank you for being a part of the channel
Thanks for all the videos you make!
Thank you very much for your excellent instructions.❤
I vote for your hosting a lawn symposium next year at your house- your yard is impeccable!
Haha I agree
I purchased one last week from home Depot It took some searching. Well worth the wait
Very nice!
Very helpful and informative. Thank you very much for posting this video. I’ll be renting this machine tomorrow.
I really appreciate that, thank you
Wow this is the same aerator that I am renting next week, great video!
Amazing video. Thank you!!
Used that same Ryan aerator last season on a friends lawn and it's a real workout. Next day I had a good size bruise on my upper right arm probably from that lowering lever. Home Depot rents that aerator and it does a good job. Rather not do it every year though.
Our local Home Depot stores do not have the Ryan LawnAire aeraters to rent, so I ordered one. First, killing the weeds with Tenacity and then aeration and seeding. Thanks again for all the tips!
Glad they helped. They do get busy renting them this time of year. You will really like this one a lot.
You are awesome!!! Thanks for the content!
You have the most useful videos on the internet. Wowww…👍
This was fantastic! THANKS!
Very good instructions. Straight to the point!
Thank you very much I appreciate that a lot
this was an AMAZING VIDEO..thank you soo much
Thanks extremely helpful video I want to aerate for the first time this fall
I really appreciate that, thank you for watching.
love this - thank you!!!!
Great video, thanks for the tips!
My dad still forces me to use a pitch fork and we have a big property it is hard
Good job, thank you very much.
Great, very helpful info!!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!
The local hardware store I rented mine from last weekend gave me 3 options for model which was really nice. I went with the biggest fastest one lol. Turns out that was a “split tine “ model that allowed for turning each half of the tines independently. Only problem is that I would need a trailer to bring it home because it had a center front tire so loading with ramps onto the back of a truck would not work so I upgraded to the toro hydraulic which was easy to just drive straight up a set of ramps into a truck bed. I also rented ramps for 4 bucks extra. Worth every penny lol. No water weights though, just steel weights in the back. You made all good points here!
That Toro you rented is very nice I owned one of those for a short time. They are awesome to rent, not the greatest to own, very expensive parts but renting and using it's a dream.
great information here!
Your content is absolute quality
I really appreciate that, thank you
Another top notch video. Thanks.
Thank you
About to do this tomorrow. First time I aerate since I got irrigation. I know some of my lines aren’t super deep, though not their exact locations. Fingers crossed. Nothing ruins a minor overseed project quite like no water and having to dig up the yard 😆. Thanks for another good vid! I’ll be using the same aerator so I appreciate the tips!
Thank you very much. I wouldn't worry too much about sprinkler lines they are almost always 10 inches or so below the ground. Mark the heads and things should be good. The sprinklers themselves are 8 inches or so long and the pipe usually is under them so hopefully you will be fine. Thanks again and good luck with your project,
Very helpful. Thanks.
Great video. Nice looking yard.
Thank you, great info.
Great video as always.
Great video! You read my mind!
Thank you
Thanks for many great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
outstanding....thank you!!!
Awesome!
excellent ty
Great tips
Very help full ty
Great tips! Thanks !!
Thank you very much
Thank you!
You're advice has helped save my yard. I'm just nervous to use tenacity and stuff because I have kids
Try using a pre-emergent, soon- there are some in granular form that are easy to apply like The Anderson's Barricade- it will definitely help you get /keep the upper hand on weeds.
I'll be using the two prong step aerator for my yard.
I like those, especially if you don't have a huge space. They are very handy
Mr. Cymbal good info....👏🏻
Thank you so much Chris!
Excellent!
Thank you
I bought a billygoat plugger model. Its awsome. :-)
I like those ones, they are very hard to find used. I always watch for them. Very nice!
Thoughts on the plug aerators you can pull behind your riding mower? Looks like if you add enough weight on the top they might be decent. Price is right to buy on of those verse rent a push version a couple times.
A little warning for everyone. I rented that exact model from Home Depot. They help me put it in my SUV. Did not realize it would roll. Didn’t even make out of parking lot before it went through my back window. 😳🤬😭🤦♂️
Scott Musgrave fat oof
That's terrible. They should have tied it down for you. If you are lazy and don't tie it down I have put down a towel and lowered the tines, it doesn't roll much that way. I hope they paid for your repairs!
Silver Cymbal well the Home Depot guys felt bad for me and gave me the rental for free. Just had to pay for the window...
Your vehicle, your responsibility to secure your load! BTW, HD also sells these cool devises called ratchet straps which secure loads very well!
trailerpark cryptoking agreed but I did not think it was going to move it all. It very much surprised me and it happened very quickly.
My weeds will love me!
Thanks for all the great info. I’m telling everyone about your channel!!! My question is about another video. Because you have that awesome Tenacity concoction for weeds, do you still use fertilizer with weed killer in it or do you only use the Tenacity for weeds and crabgrass??
I rented this machine today. Nice video.
Thats awesome, glad it helped.
nice....very good video
Seriously helpful since I rented the exact same machine lol
Good info
I tried to read through the comments before asking, you mention the best time to aerate is in the fall but is beneficial or harmful to aerate in the spring? I have not done this before and would like to do it as soon as possible if there is benefit in the spring. Thanks and great videos!
Very helpful
Glad to hear that. Thank you
My local Home Depot tool rental will also rent a 5X8 utility trailer with a drop down gate. Even after draining the water and removing the weights, it's still very heavy.
Thats fantastic the small trailer makes everything very easy!
Great video. Do you suggest thatching at the same time?
You have a couple good points about mowing and marking spray heads or termite traps.
One suggestion to make this so much easier and way more fun. Purchase an agrifab pull behind core aerator for your lawn tractor. Throw on 3-4 flat cement blocks twist off a beer top and ride that mower around the yard to your hearts content! Then no cleanup, no rental rate, no return and much easier on the back!
not the same
Your right. The rental way is more expensive and work
Hey! Thanks for these great tips! Quick question, what is that type of grass that is shown at 3:36'? Thanks!
Nice videos and very helpful, can I put seeds after aeration? And what's the method?
Great Vid💞 Wanted to see how you loaded it on your truck.
The best way I like to load it is to park my truck against an incline anywhere you have one and then I use a piece of plywood that is 3/4" like a ramp, not a full sheet but enough to get it across.
You mentioned seeding in the fall, can I put St Augustine plugs down if I do use pre-emergent?
I have 5 acres I put In end of last year, I live in upstate NY. Come spring time would you fertilize and aerate would you just fertilize? Thanks for the help!
nice video
Love your videos. Need your advise. Planning to repair my lawn first week of September. Which following order would be better.
1-aerate, over seed and lever the lawn with top soil.
2- aerate, level lawn with top soil then over seed.
3- level lawn with top soil, aerate then over seed.
Thanks in advance.
I had same questions. Turns out #3 is the better thing to do. You should seed after aerating and you don't want to cover up the holes with Top soil so best to Top soil before aerating
@@WeatherNut27 thanks for the quick reply. Not looking forward to this project, but it has to be done.
Thanks for ALL the great videos!!!!
I have a 42” Lawn-tractor (craftsman T1000). Is there a DIY or cheap core aerator attachment I could use with my lawn tractor?
I’ve been using a “core aerator weighted attachment” that replaces the tines on my tiller. It works fine but is hard to handle (even once a year - haha).
Unfortunately I have never had good experience with the tractor models. They work poorly and I know some guys love them but I think they just love what they own. Best bet is to rent one, or do option 2 and buy one using my super discount video from Home Depot. This is how I bought mine: czcams.com/video/nc_7RZ-2y5A/video.html
Couple things to note make sure that your aerator has sharp tins that they don’t look flat.. when you put an aerator on your truck I would put some plywood underneath it can damage your bedliner.
You also wanna strap it down if you’re transporting yourself it could be a disaster otherwise. And lastly I would irrigate you lawn really good the week that your going to do it for good plugs.
Thanks
I want one!
Thank you so much for this video and for taking the time to show the different aerators and where the weights are located! Would spring/summer be okay to do this? I know it will be a lot hotter but will it adversely impact my lawn to aerate it in warm temps? Is it possible to add seed during spring or will it make the weeds worse? Thank you!
Absolutely okay to do in Spring, less fun in Summer. You'd have to water more because of the heat. Moist ground is easier to aerate. And ABSOLUTELY overseed/starter/fertilize into the holes!
I guess the tine wheels have to be independent to be able to turn. We are having drought problems. I'd like to get something down into the soil to help retain moisture. I hope top dressing with a compost and biochar mix after aeration will help.
It's interesting for the Ryan they have some type of split differential in the tines. All mechaical too, But others like Toro have a hydro unit that turns also that is at a lot of rental shops.
Thank you and very helpful. You mention leaving the cores loose on the lawn surface as a top dressing . How is that best done without causing them to be compacted or squashed into multiple little soil “ coins “ which stick onto the grass after walking on them or if using machinery ? Do you suggest going over the lawn with a mower mulcher or similar to “blitz” the cores into a powder as a top dressing and if so does that actually work ?
i went over them with my mower and broke them down
Good stuff! Does the handle on that model fold down?...I have an SUV.
Would you recommend removing plugs if your soil has a high clay content?
Thanks for the quick tutorial. What do you think of chemical (surfactant) vs. core aeration?
Thank you, I haven't ever tried the liquid ones. I am skeptical since the golf course industry still uses mechanical and they would want chemical so bad for reduced labor costs. Can't say it doesn't work but I am still out on that one.
Good Day. I missed out on buying one at Home Depot. Maybe next time. What was that backpack sprayer you used in another of your videos. How did you get it in your truck?
Thanks for this video. I’ve always felt however; that the timing of aeration comes at a time (Fall); when all the noxious weed seeds are getting dispersed. This is why I’ve generally stayed away from the aeration process altogether. Another belief I have is if ones lawn looks great, don’t aerate!
I do appreciate and view most of your videos however. You always have a lot of helpful advice and information. Thanks!
Interesting. For me aeration in combination with my other steps has been a real game changer for me. But if your lawn already looks great than you are obviously doing something right.
I used a walk behind back in the Spring on our properties. The best way I described it as getting in a ring a wrestling a bull by the horns all day😂😂
Those can be tough the easy steer makes it so much easier
Silver Cymbal I could imagine so
How deep do you core aerate? Does the Ryan machine allow for adjustable aerating depth?
I like the fact that you use a Ryan with a Honda engine. Best machine going.
Your turning skills need help. Best way to turn is to (if you're turning left) lift on the left, push down on the right and swing your body around, ahead of the machine essentially getting the machine to pull you around its centre of gravity. I takes practice and admittedly some muscle but if you can master it, you can do a 180 on a dime.
I prefer a pull behind the rider mower type with about 300# of weight in the tray. The John Deere labeled one has served well and independent core tines on the axle allows turning and backing, plus core depth is adjustable. The cost is low enough to just buy it.
That's interesting. They stopped selling most of those that have true core and most just have 1/2 sided spoons. I never had great luck with them but you must have a really good one.
@@SilverCymbal Model# PA-48JD and the only vendor right now seems to be Home Depot. Plus a tray full of 12" foundation blocks.
Fall? Okay, great! If you have Bermuda grass like I do, still aeration is best to do in the fall?
