Doc is aerating the lawn and discusses the whole aeration subject. He uses spikes vs. cores on this lawn aeration but explains the difference and why most will use a core aerator. The subject that always comes up is do you leave the cores on the ground. He gives his thoughts. After the lawn aerating he also applies HUMICHAR for soil health. - Jak na to + styl
You made some seriously solid points that I didn’t even think of when people talk about leaving the cores and brushing them back in.
Ive been building and managing pga major championship golf courses all over the world. Various degrees in soil turf entomology water management micromanaging turf at various heights is a serious hands on job that i constantly need to be on top I agree with a lot that u talk about.
Hey Doc all is well here in NE Ohio...just finished my seeding again front finally put some peat moss down with seed makes great bed. Will do the aerator this summer. If affordable.
Amazing what you have done
Excellent advice here. Really appreciate you taking the time to put it together
That hat is awesome @8:30. Great video too!
Great video I have ran one
This was very educational!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! DOC
Welcome
Wish I saw this 5 months ago. Good video
Thanks Doc
Great information Doc.
What is the music at the 5 minute mark?
About the preemergent barrier, just put down another light round of it after you aerate if it worries you.
Good knowledge!
I prefer a $79 for a Green SCOTT 🇨🇦 aerator for my medium home yard, wheel for mowers as well they makes their own TINES… pretty cool.
As a lawnmower I never understood aeration and now I do.
middle ga 05-15-2024. fertilizer down, biochar down for about two months. taking back my centipede one season at a time. question...can i core aerate this time of year? if another time of year i will most def wait. love the videos!!
Glad you found that HumiChar. It’s now $94 for 40lb bag
I think it's nearly doubled in price since it came out
Its currently up to about $99. Definitely has risen about $14 in the past 3 years.
Leaving the cores if your lawn is good. If your lawn is not on good shape makes sense to pick them up
I have a lawn that is seriously compacted, and is heavily water logged in spots, so much so that it has impacted hedging that is at the edge of that section. I estimate maybe only 50 percent of the seed that went in actually took so it’s extremely thin. I am planning on aerating in march. Would aerating and overseeding help the drainage and actually help my lawn to grow? It looks yellowish and only really grows thick in some spots!😢
What I’m gathering is first spike aerate to build up a strong enough grass to then core aerate? I’m new to Georgia learning about my Bermuda lawn.
How about the pre emergent such as prodiamine or dithiopyr.
After aerating a lawn, do I need to wait before cutting the grass? when is it suggested that it's ok to mow?
Hey Doc
My lawns is struggling so bad 😭
I've got holes and I think it's moles
I've got jumping worms and don't know about grubs
I've got patches that are brown and bare areas with nothing but soil
My lawns is struggling really bad 😭
I have been trying to find where I can rent one of these to no luck. I have even contacted the manufacturer to find out what equipment rental companies they have sold to. I get told the head of sales will get back to me with that information but have yet to get that.
Once I plug aerate my lawn do I have to over soil it? do i use top soil or lawn sand?
Is it worth composting the cores or should we just dispose of them?
What about using a pitch fork in the lawn to aerate the lawn?
Hey Doc - could you link to your leaf collector? Looked on site but no luck. Thanks!
Question. I was at my neighbors last week and his yard man was arrating his St Augustine grass. It was a nice big machine but it did not kick out the plugs. The guy said it constantly clogs and doesn’t matter if it doesn’t kick those out. Is this guy pulling my leg?
I’m aerating my St.Augustine lawn next week. Can I put Humichar immediately followed by Nitraking?
Can you please give me the model number for this aerator I'm very interested... Great video thanks in advance
How often can you aerate with core cutters
Hi Doc, great video, i plan to replace my lawn and just see if you have any recommendations the type of grass should be using in Florida area? i am thinking about using St. Augustine....
Which leaf sweeper are you using?
my lawn has brown patch and wondering if it is a good idea to add humic acid to it. thanks
Doc, my yard is totally uneven. Should I level the yard first before aeration’s and seeding?
Should I weed feed prior to aeration?
The problem you'll have is that the leveling might wash away or move without active growth. I prefer to do it when the lawn is active.
Dr. Where did you purchase the steel tines I just picked up a used billy goat 18 inch. My tine is 5/8 diameter
I generally just google it and check out current suppliers. They often go out of stock. I've even bought some on EBAY
Well one added tidbit. You didn't De-Thatch. That should be done before you Aerate. Then IF you wish, use a lawn Sweeper.
that looks like 1500-2k sq ft back there ... is the 40 bag on there too much at one time? Looking to pound some biochar over the next few months and the bag tells me 1-2lbs per 1k at a time ...
There is no such thing as putting down too much biochar
So...I'm getting pestered by aeration people to perform the task in the fall. Seems like a waste of money. I'd rather do it in the spring. Thoughts?
You like the skinny solid spikes vs the fatter solid spikes?
I say I will prob do larger ones next.
Hey Doc, what’s your thoughts on those aeration spikes that strap on to your boots?
They do very little
Keep your strap on for the bedroom, the lawn is no place for that
My yard 45x45 has been infested with gophers over the last couple of years and I trap what I can using gophinators but they have ruined my yard. It's no longer level with many dips and lowered areas and the ground is very soft basically everywhere. Help
Gophers are beautiful and a part of nature leave them be
@@crunch9876 You've probably never had gophers ruining your yard but thanks for the laugh anyway.
Thanks for the laugh.@@crunch9876
Found your big spikes.
@3:49
Should the ground be: wet, damp, or dry ( at time of aeration)?
I dampen mine so the tines can penetrate better. Do not soak.
Does gypsum help to break up heavy clay.
So do you think it would be wasted effort to aerate and level at the same time?
If you're sand leveling it's fine.
Great video can you please give me the model number of your billy goat aerator. Thank you
18" plugr mine has the BRIGGS but I think they switched to Honda.
I just picked up the PL1801H and it was $3,900 but it’s 2024 and thats our world today with the so called inflation
I understand that with spike aeration you would be improving oxygen and water access to the top layer of your lawn, but wouldn’t it actually cause increased impaction (though possibly very minimal) or at the very least you wouldnt be getting de
compaction benefit
Correct and I go over that difference in many videos.
@@HowTowithDoc Thank you!
3900.00 now
Where can I buy one of those billy goats?
At the farm
We aerate HUNDREDS of acres of grass a year. There is no practical way for us to pick up the plugs.
You guys don't wear hearing protection when using mowers?
I guarantee you, you will have noise induced hearing loss
I get mine done to hide all the dog poop.
First
SIGH ....Core Aerate when lawn is wet or dry?
Wet but not muddy.
Wtf is a quarter inch and a half
3/4! Lol.
He actually said 1-1/4" or 1-1/2".
Spike aerating is so pointless on a clay soil because you're creating temporary pour space. The core aeration creates proper pore space. I worked on a golf course in Illinois for years and one of the main things I did twice was to aerate the heavy clay. then I would go over it with sand to keep the pore space and it takes longer for it to close in on itself. Tine Aeration on clay soil is basically for vanity. It doesn't really do anything in the long run. Some people enjoy wasting their time
If you spike monthly (which we do) it helps a LOT... we state in the video the difference between core and spike.
Hey awesome. What is the brand of your fertilizer spreader. Unable to find one
