  • What is the hardest wood you have ever turned? Well for me it's this one, Angelique, we all know woodturning yew can be touch but it's not even close. I think I lost count of how many times I had to sharpen my gouge. Anyway, can I pull off a segmented bowl using two of the hardest wood about?

    ANGELIQUE - A short story. Since dinosaurs roamed, my family have been in the architectural millwork, renovation, preservation biz at significant scale, mostly in New Orleans. You may know, the city was built on a sand bar between river and swamp with a miserable sub tropical climate. Most of the early structures were constructed of Swamp Cypress with some Southern Pine or Red Oak timbers brought in from the countryside. So much of the slow growing Cypress was depleted that substitutes for the weather resistant lumber were needed. Hondurans Mahogany was imported until it was in short supply. Various lumber speculators tried their hand at filling the gap and at one point, a privateer showed up at the docks with a boat load of what was then a relatively unknown species - ANGELIQUE. He had it hauled to our facility and contracted to have it re-sawn and planed into manageable dimensions. When the lumber baron got the bill for all the saw and planer blades, he elected to abandon the entire lot where it sat in the racks for 50-ish years. It's tough stuff, very weather resistant, but ridiculously hard on tools.

    That was a very good choice of accent wood for that bowl. Stunning. I wish I was more of a “purist” when it comes to turning. I only own one bowl gouge and I stink at sharpening so I do the majority of my turning with carbide tools and a scraper. After I learned how to re sharpen carbides, I save tons of money. I really need to press myself to use my bowl gouge more. Excellent as usual Mike.

    I applaud the puritan in you for trying to use the bowl gauge but the carbide was working great and your cuts looked better

      You are right Rob, I did start off turning with carbides but moved into HSS tools, must admit I did enjoy going back to carbides on this one they are fun to use.

    What a STUNNING bowl. Adding the Yew was a great idea & I think was a 'clincher' for the finished piece. When such hard wood is encountered I am always surprised by the apparent reluctance of most wood turners to turn to using Carbide tools, to me they invariably are used to stunning effect. Obviously throwing keys etc into this bowl is unlikely to cause much harm, but it does look stunning & worth all the hard work, plus, what a brilliant finish can be produced on it. Hope your hand healed well too. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Před 5 měsíci

      Morning Don, a lot of traditional turners believe that carbides are beneath then or they see them as beginners tools. To me they are just a tool like anything else, they are good at some things and not great at others but used in the right way they can produce some beautiful shapes. This is still one of my favourite shapes to make. It retains the weight of the wood and although very simple the design just pleases me. I really must make one for myself. All the best my friend. Mike
