I was trained as a silversmith, now a wood turner. Love to see other turners adding metal to their bowls! Thanks
I don’t add a lot of metal to my work, just a touch of leaf here and there.
Bog Oak is amazing stuff to work with and I can’t believe how well he did with the lump I sent him and that metal looks amazing! 😁👍
Thanks Tom, I really want to try a silver inlay but I'm thinking of using silver wire rather than melting it, what do you think?
@@MikeHolton silver melts at about 1800 degrees. Pouring molten silver into a wooden slot would cause a big fire. You would have to fabricate the silver into the shape desired then get it glued into the wood. It would also cost a bit. Silver is about $20 an ounce. Bronze or brass would be more cost effective. Good luck and thanks for the videos. Tom.
@@tomweishaar2998 Thanks Tom, I was considering cutting a recess with an undercut and then hammering silver wire into the recess. Like you said, silver is expensive so I will experiment with cheaper alternatives first. All the best and thanks again for your reply. Mike
This is, in my opinion the most beautiful bowl you have made! It's rich dark , almost black, wood and the inlay are inspired companions
Thanks so much my friend 😀
I absolutely loved this blank and what it revealed. I hate it so much he put metal in it.
No way in hell I'm doing that, to that bowl.
@@The_Dawg_father We all have our opinions and views, thanks for yours 😊
@MikeHolton
Of course sir. You are very talented and I've also seen you appreciate beautiful wood as it is. Just in this particular one, in my opinion, I would have kept it natural, but that's just me. You should watch your vid objectively, like you were watching another channel.
OMG Mike. The amount of time you spent on the bog oak was incredible. The finished piece is beautiful but clearly tested your skill and patience. Again, I learn so much from you on how you address issues as they arise. Thanks for sharing.
You are more than welcome, I cut out so much video of me just going through the process again and again, good job I started with such thick walls lol
@@MikeHolton Mike, does the wood alloy quickly dull your tools?
@@laweiner1 Not as much as you would think, it is quite a soft metal.
What a precious gift... and I think what you made is a wonderful tribute to that ancient wood
Thanks Lee 😁
As a former amateur archaeologist with an infatuation for prehistory, the bowl is singing to me on so many levels. It's not just beautiful wood, it's a piece of prehistory, and a stunning work of art 😍
Thanks Nikki and I share you love for prehistory, all the best, Mike
Very nice Mike, love the old wood , a hollow tool would have made another bowl 😊 Brian Erwin NZ 👍
As a much more novice turner, I appreciate you showing when things aren't working quite as intended and how you go about dealing with them. First, it shows that everyone has to overcome challenges sometimes. Second, it gives me ideas to deal with my challenges.
Thanks! The one thing that helped me most when I started was to make myself finish every piece I made, if something was not going well, rather than just throw it away I would keep on working until it was done. You build up a knowledge of how to deal with situations and make things work.
Fint arbeid
I agree. We learn so much from our challenges. Much appreciated.
@@johnlivsey4146 We do indeed John!
I've been so interested in woodworking since I was a child. I've been collecting for my own shop, and at 48.. I'm finally excited that I have the opportunity to begin. Better late than never.
I really appreciate how you stop intermittently and discuss issues and your fixes throughout the video. It feels like more of a tutorial than a showcase. Thank you.
That is awesome, good luck! I started a few years ago and not looked back 😃
Slowly working my way through your older videos to help with views since learning of your upcoming move. I'm not a woodworker, just an appreciator, but like many of your other viewers, I find a place of peace and calm in your workshop that helps me decompress at the end of the day. Your quiet determination and unflappable composure in the face of obstacles and setbacks (with wood turning projects and in life) is simply inspiring. You were made for this. Thank you so much for taking us all along on your journey. Godspeed.
Thanks so much Norma, I really appreciate your kind words
It’s absolutely incredible to think of the fact that this piece of wood has been around longer than so much of recorded human history. The fact that it lasted so long, to wind its way up into your workshop, and to be turned into such a gorgeous piece of art that will likely last longer still evokes a strange sense of nostalgia in me.
Good luck to everyone entering the 20k giveaway, and here’s to 30k in the future!
Thanks so much, it is an incredible piece of wood and with the right care it should last another 5000, al the best, Mike
There is nothing better than coming home from a stressful day in the office and winding down by watching one of your little experiments. Thank you.
Thanks Ivor, glad you enjoyed it, all the best, Mike
That's awesome that you have access to wood 5000 years old. Good job in overcoming the problems you incountered.
Thanks so much Bruce 😄
A lot of work went into this beautiful bowl. Just shows there is a way to accomplish the desire you want if your willing to work.
Exactly effort=reward
Congratulations on your channel growing. It's a testament to your hard work. The bog oak bowl is absolutely stunning.
Thank you very much! 🙏
A beautiful piece on its own but the history of the wood adds immensely. Glad to hear that you’re getting so much out of this out of this wonderful journey.
Thank you very much Tony, I'm having the time of my life 😀
Fantastic 5300 years old bowl, beautifully done, a real pleasure for taking care of it for the next generations. Let’s hope it will reach 10600 years.
I hope so too, I wonder what the world will look like then!
Wife and I watch this turning. Truly beautiful.
Thanks so much for watching, all the best, Mike 😊
The color of this wood is amazing, never seen anything like it. Nearly looked like you were turning stone insteand of wood. Great result as usual, Mike!
It’s amazing stuff to work with and I can’t believe how well he did with the lump I sent him 😁👍
Thank you very much my friend, this one was a good test of patience 😂
Quite an interesting and challenging piece! You've turned a piece of fallen history into a beautiful work of art, Mike. The Woods metal makes a great highlight and suits the dark tones of the wood. Whoever wins this will have great story to go with it!
Thanks so much my friend, all the best, Mike
The metal finishes off the wood beautifully.
Thanks Margaret 😁
at least you didn't drown into a bucket of epoxy resin like a lot of other people do. well done
Thanks so much Chuck 😀
Well, Mike, that was one rollercoaster of a video! But the finished bowl is just... exquisite. Such beautiful colors in the wood, and that shine: wow. Also, thanks for teaching me that Woods Metal is a thing! Cheers!
You're welcome Ronnie 😀, all the best, Mike
Yes. That Woods metal is so spectacular. Sad that it's so hazardous. Stay safe!
Everything about this bowl is truly special. I live beside one of Aberdeenshire's recumbent stone circles, and it's crazy to think this wood predates that. Congratulations on 20,000, so well deserved!
It’s amazing stuff to work with and I can’t believe how well he did with the lump I sent him 😁👍
Thanks so much, 5300 years is quite hard to imagine. It looks so good for its age 🤣
It's zen like watching you taking something with issues and returning it to beauty.
Thanks Pamela 😀
That is a beautiful bowl . The shine is incredible.
5000 years under the ground and now it has its time in the sun again.
It does indeed, glad I got to work on it 😀
I bet the ancient who chopped this tree down five thousand plus years ago didn’t use an axe of Woods metal! But I’m sure he would think it was Oak Eh.
Haha very good 😀
What a beautiful blend of wood and metal. The simplicity of the design belies the hidden complexities, the imagination and the skill needed to make it.
Thanks John, I do my nest, kind regards, Mike 😀
A beautiful bowl where the stone age (past) present (2024) and the future (tomorrow and beyond) meet!
Thanks Paul 😃
The best bowl I've seen , you did the old wood proud.
Thank you so much John 😀
Amazing to think that that tree was alive around 3200 BC. Congratulations on your 20,000 subscribers, someone will be very lucky to have that giveaway, another work of art.
Thank you very much Peter, well it could be you you have as much a chance as anyone else. All the best, Mike
Probably the most interesting piece of turning I've seen in years, and the age adds to the interest.
Thanks so much Isobel so kind of you to say, all the best, Mike 😀
This bowl absolutely sings! Thank you for not only educating but for also inspiring others to take up the craft
You are so welcome! And thanks so much for your support 🙏
This is a piece of wood so ancient that at 5300 years old, it may have stood tall in the sun before the construction of Stonehenge. You've given new life to an incredibly beautiful and properly simple piece of history.
Thanks so much! all the best, Mike 😀
It's amazing that wood this age was still in a condition to be worked. I know oak is especially durable and bogs are renown for their preservation properties but I am still in awe of this wood's integrity and beauty. An astounding piece, flaws and all.
Thanks Julie, I know what you mean, if it had no fallen in a bog it would have gone thousands of years ago! 😀
I have only been watching your channel for the last 6 months and each woodturning project is a real work of art. I have learned so much in those months that it makes me want to go out and buy a lathe.
Wow, thank you Mark, you should give it a go, it really is great fun 😀
Bravo! I always enjoy watching you figure out how the wood wants to look. Love the end piece 👏
Thanks so much Diane 😀
That was amazing - bringing life back to a 5000 year old piece of wood - well done
Thanks so much Ian, all the best, Mike 😀
So interesting to consider this wood under water for 5000 years, and then coming up for air to become a beauty. Amazing work
I know, it was a real honour to be able to turn it. 😀
That bowl is incredible, 5,000 years old and beautiful wood working.
Thanks Charles, it was an honour to be able to turn something so old 😀
Bogwood , such a blast from the past for me , I remember a helping a friend who was homesteading in Ireland 40 years ago harvesting peat and finding all kind of ( mostly small ) pieces of bog wood , all deeply blackened ..
It's amazing to look at, the colour is just so rich, would love to have a load more.
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TURNINGS I HAVE EVER SEEN.
Wow! Thanks Tommy 😀
So you posted this video on my birthday - and you're giving the bowl away on my wife's!
We both love watching your videos as you're the only woodturner who gives some background on what you're doing.
Keep up the excellent work
Thanks Rod and Happy Birthday to you and your wife 😀, all the best, Mike
WOW...WOW....WOW!!!! Bog Oak can be an absolutely beautiful piece and you managed to make this piece stunning. The dark oak with the Woods metal....WOW!!!
Thanks James, I guess you like it 😀, all the best, Mike
Just amazing the wood is 5000 years old! Love it.
Thanks Ann, so glad I got some to play with, all the best, Mike 😀
Amazing to see a piece of wood that old being turned into something so beautiful.
Thanks so much, beautiful wood to turn 😀
WOW !!! I keep thinking about the 5000 years and all the history and the lives that have been lived between then and now, echoing down the ages. I love the way you see the beauty in it and give it a new life and most especially the acceptance of the cracks in it. There seems a kind of reverence in that. As to the metal, I think of it as anchoring it in the present, by way of a wee pause in the time when the formula for the metal was developed. Lucky, lucky person that wins it.
Thanks so much for your thoughts Cecilia, it really is fascinating to think of all the history that has happened since this piece was around 😀
The colours in this bowl are memerising - I wouldn't have minded the holes or cracks, it's part of the wood's history and character but you're obviously a perfectionist and to my eyes it's perfect!
Thanks so Margaret, you are very kind 😀
I really have run out of superlatives Mike, Its a wood turning lesson and a chemistry lesson all in one, I love it
Haha thanks Steve, that woods metal is pretty easy to use, you just need to keep yourself safe. 😀
I like the way you also explain what all you are doing with what tools and what polishes whilst turning. Better than having no commentary like on other channels. Cheers!
You're welcome Taylor, I hope it helps people understand what's going on in my head. All the best, Mike
Really nice bowl from the ancient wood. Would love to have it!
I wanted to mention it is so nice to see when things go wrong, even with a professional. Thank you for showing us problems and how to continue with a finished product to be proud of.
Thanks Tommy, dealing with problems is part of life and I would much prefer to show then to hide. All the best, Mike
That's mind boggling to imagine how old that is. What an awesome opportunity 👏😊
It really is 😀
Wow, Mike, that one really fought back didn't it! However it looks brilliant now, so well done for sticking with it!
It would be an honour to win such a beautiful piece of work, particularly given its age!! I have only ever seen things this old either on telly or in a museum!
Thanks Phil and fighting back is one phrase that comes to mind although I may use slightly more colourful language 😀, all the best and good luck, Mike
So amazing. The honor of being able to work with that piece of wood 😊
I agree Mary, I'm a very lucky guy 😀
Very nice work Mike. What privilege it is to work with such an old piece of wood.
I completely agree! I feel so grateful to work with it and I knew Mike would do something amazing with the bits I sent him to play with 👍 😊
Thank you very much Loran, indeed, I was very lucky to be sent this by Richard 😁
Greetings from Birmingham (Alabama). Just last night my wife and I came across your channel and were delighted with your demo on that challenging chunk of bog oak. The use of Wood alloy was entirely new to me. That was beautiful work and I would be proud to add your bowl to my collection.
Welcome aboard! and good luck with the competition, all the best, Mike 😀
What a beautiful piece. The big oak is lovely, but what you’ve done with it take it over the top. The Woods metal looks great against the dark wood. Well done.
Bog Oak is amazing stuff to work with and I can’t believe how well he did with the lump I sent him 😁👍
Thank you very much Doug, it was quite easy to use and I'm glad as the oak was a pain 🤣
Mike, when I saw the cracks I was certain you could never get it turned without it shattering into toothpicks.
Once again I underestimated you abilities. And that bog oak takes a marvelous finish.
I'm so glad I discovered your channel - You never cease to amaze.
Thanks so much Dave and thanks for your continued support, it means a lot, all the best, Mike 😀
You find such interesting wood for your projects. I’ll be honest. I didn’t know there was wood recovered from bogs. Makes for a very interesting piece. The darkened wood contrasted nicely with the metal inlay.
Thanks Scott, you can really only find it in the UK or Ireland, glad I got hold of some 😀
Mke: I certainly enjoy your calm demeanor, narration, and your thoughtfulness towards each step. You did a great justice to this ancient wood. It’s a beautiful bowl. Thank you for another inspirational video!
Glad you enjoyed it Joe, I really appreciate your words, Mike 😃
Trail's and tribulations come to mind on this. The oak is not making it easy for you but, what a finish. Beautiful.
Thanks and you are so right, I got to a point where I knew it was not going to get any better lol.
Just an amazing piece of wood! And a beautiful bowl. To think it spent ocer 5000 years waiting for you to wake it up!
Wow, thank you, hopefully it will last for another 5000 years 😀
Mike, the Bog Oak bowl..... absolutely stunning!... it was a joy watching you overcome the problems you encountered with this project...... amazing!..... and yeah..... I'm still looking at giving wood turning a go!
Haha thanks Steve, there were a few problem but I just hate to give up. What are you waiting for? 😀
Absolutely gorgeous piece. 5,300 years old. So very cool.
Thank you very much Jake, it's hard to comprehend that sort of age!
What a beautiful piece of wood.
I think so too! 😁
Good thing you started so thick! It's amazing to think the bowl is made from such old wood.
Haha I was thinking that at the time of turning, all the best, Mike 😀
You did such an awesome job on this bog oak piece. I'm so happy you kept trying and didn't resort to either giving up or filling it with resin and adding lights. 🥰
That black part makes me think the tree might have gone through quite a fire at some time in its life. During that 5,300 years, it must have gone through a lot. To me, this is a showpiece bowl..I'd put into a showcase box and place it prominently on display in my home... something visitors could ask about. Not for me. For the wood, for the bowl... for all your hard work. I think I'd even have the video there so people could watch you make this beautiful piece of art.
Thanks so much, bog oak is a tree that has fallen into a bog and it's the lack of oxygen that stops it from rotting away and created that colour. Amazing wood!
I’ve always wondered what bog oak would look like.
That is a phenomenal piece Mike which anyone would be proud to be the custodian of hand to their kids.
Thanks Mick, this was a tough turn but I'm glad I had the chance to turn it. All the best, Mike
Mike, I can't explain why I am so enjoying watching you work, but I really do. This is a lovely bowl, and I loved watching you problem-solve and turn out beautiful work. Thanks!
He did an amazing job! Bog Oak is amazing stuff to work with and I can’t believe how well he did with the lump I sent him 😁👍
Thanks so much, I just try and keep it as real as I can, what happens happens and we deal with it. All the best, Mike 🙂
This is a beautiful piece. We’ll done!
Thanks! 😃
I am just so amazed by your craftsmanship! I know nothing about turning wood, but I love watching and learning!
Thanks Suzanne, glad you enjoy it, all the best, Mike 😀
Absolutely beautiful, crazy to think how old the piece of wood is, pays true homage to its age.
It really does, can't wait to turn another 😃
I like how you said "Oh Blimey". And how you persevered!
Haha thanks 😅
Omg...!!
One can only love that wood.
Amazing patience with a great end result as usual.
Thank you very much Lars 🙂
Love it. 5300 years old! Wow!!
I know, it's pretty amazing!
Mike you have the patience of Jobe to handle those cracks. Nice recovery.
Haha it took a while to get to the bottom lol
That was so awesome to watch! Here in the U.S. we don't have bogs or Anything that is 5300 yrs old, except rocks! Great job
Haha thanks Billy and thanks for watching 😀
So nice to see such an ancient piece of wood become so beautiful.
I can well understand the problems you’ve encountered and overcome. Will definitely be giving Dick a follow.
Great to read Louis, and still struggling to believe how stunning that piece he made turned out 👍👍👍
Thanks so much Louis, it certainly tested my patience lol, loved how easy the woods metal was to use 😊. Dick makes incredible art, you will not regret following him.
Only thing I can is WOW! That wood is something else! Gorgeous wood!
I must agree, it is so beautiful to look at, grain and colour are amazing
What a beautiful work of art you’ve produced right there .
What makes it so much more interesting is the age of the piece of oak you have turned it from.
Thanks for showing the project.
Rob.
Thank you so much Rob, it's quite a privilege to turn something this old 😀
One look and I can see how rich, thus looks like a million, someone is very fortunate to have won this one

The mineral deposits were fascinating. I'd also never heard of Woods metal before. Fascinating project, I'm glad you didn't give up on it.
Thanks Susan, I hate to give up and was so glad to reach the end on this one lol
Just started watching, can't wait to see this turn with wood that old!
Hope you enjoy it 😀
This bit of wood was a week or so away from being a lump of coal! Well done making that bowl - I was on the edge of my seat watching through my hands as I thoroughly expected it to disintegrate. Thankfully that did not happen, phew!
Thanks and yes I was cutting it a bit close! 😀
It was challenging, Mike, however, the end result was worth the trouble!! A beautiful bowl with quite a history. Well done!!
Many thanks Tracy, this one was hard! 😀
Alles Gute, mein Freund Mike
Love watching you master this beautiful piece of old wood. Grain is beautiful.
Thank you very much Debbie 😀
That is super cool to be using wood that was alive five thousand years ago is amazing great job
Thanks Jesse, I know it is pretty hard to believe 😃
I've never seen Bog Oak before but the beauty is undeniable. Fantastic bowl.
Thanks David, this is definitely one of my favourite woods to turn
Good afternoon Mike. I’m behind with my viewing as I’ve been with my Son decorating my Grandson’s bedroom and building furniture near Paris for ten days. I’m catching up slowly and feeling guilty sitting with my feet up rather than playing in my workshop. That’s a fantastic piece of wood with a lovely inlay and shine. Well worth the effort 🌞
Haha sounds like you have done enough over the last 10 days and need a rest! This bog oak is just beautiful, quite challenging but like you said worth the effort 😀
Thank you for sharing with us.
That’s one of those pieces you can just keep chasing your tail until it’s too late. Glad you new when enough was enough.
Beautiful!!
Bog Oak is amazing stuff to work with and I can’t believe how well he did with the lump I sent him 😁👍
Thanks Barry, if I had much hair it would have been pulled out, I cut out about an hour of footage of me turning back and trying again. But we got there eventually, well we got to a point I could deal with lol.
Beautiful modern design contrasts beautifully with the ancient wood. Well done.
Thank you very much Madeleine 😀
The metal inlay gives it a modern look. Very nice.

Thanks Charlie 😀
Great job Mike! I had the good fortune to turn a 3,000 year old piece of Giant Redwood. It is such an honor to work a piece of wood that old! Love the Woods Metal inlay in the rim.
That is awesome, was it just recently felled or had it been down for a while?
I think it must have been down for quite a while ,@@MikeHolton . The widow forwarded the piece to my neighbor after her husband passed away. I get the idea that it was in his shop for a while.
@@claytonbink1647 Ah that makes sense, thanks for getting back to me, all the best, Mike
I love this bowl! Its so extrordinary to be such old wood! Thanks!
Glad you like it! The age is incredible 😃
What an absolutely beautiful bowl. Exceptional and unique.
Thank you very much! 😀
Gorgeous Bowl! The bright metal inlay is a cool contrast against the dark wood. You inspire me to take up wood turning.
Awesome! Thank you, you should give it a go, it's a whole lot of fun 😀
