I was at this performance in the Rockefeller building,..after the show we were in the dressing room and all of the sudden the door opens,..it was the police and fire department,..news center 4 downstairs called 911 because of the smoke and explosions,..it smoked out the news set. When Wendy hugged me after the set where she smashed the flowerpots,...she got dirt and cream all over me. Back then,...she was my friend,..I knew it was special, but now it is something so unbelievably surreal and all the more precious...it seems like a dream now. I tried to bring home the car door she gave me but the NBC elevator guy started to go on a powertrip and was a control freak,...it was something like if I didnt put it back he wouldnt let me on the elevator. I used to carry all kinds of blown up and cut up stuff home from those shows. I Miss You Wendy......but I will never forget you.....
Still blows me away that this was in a studio of the Rockefeller Center Building! I am sure the fire marshals afterward had a filed day with this incident! ;-)
You should have seen the looks on their faces.....when that door swung open it was an awkward hot minute,..then a silent "alrighty then" nod,.. backing out clicking it back shut.
The spirit of that era really shines through the mist of time. I was around a lot of the 80s alt/ punk/ idle whatever label you like to use. Great times and mad memories.
Axeman I was 16 years old at that show and a GLOBE SECURITY GUARD, You fugtards bowled me over going to the elevator. One of ya reached back and yanked me up off the filthy hallway... Maybe you dude... It was a good show really... This girl was like so skanky but yet I woulda married her. She was like thee most popular of the male genome fantasy girls. The problem is the fact I met her in New Hampshire right after that show was the summer of 87, my THEN old lady was Bi and her best friend from NH area was a newbee to NH on her first job ever at 20 years old she became a GYM teacher in NH and then a short while after that show I/we had an invite to the house Wendy had rented/lived in because of our ON STAGE antics and passing notes Wendy took a liking to blond haired blue eyed Adel was also Bi like my blond haired wife and Wendy was really interested from that note we passed her. We talked by phone for weeks about raunch and kink and a 4-somes. The more we talked the worse it got. That concert led to a night I would never forget and never will. If I could have married all three of em I would have... Todays porno it's like in plain day light. back then there was something special about all of it happening in the dark after dinner and booze at night not like it is done in porn movies today. But Wendy was the venture goddess is the only way I could describe her. We were on edge for months after the show and getting her invite my late wife jumped out of her panties whenever Wendy called our house. PS I was a security guard that you guys knocked over in the white shirt. Nick Capuanno my best friend was there with me and he was Adels date that night. He owned Nicks Speed Shop in Bethlehem Pa. The only reason we were there was Wendy not the music. My ex she had a fetish with her and when I met Wendy she was fantastic she hypnotized my late old lady... Wendy was Not anything like the tough bitch singing in the songs and that was what killed her. Probably the exact thing that killed her.. She really was a real woman.... Wendy was a special woman and I wonder what the hell happened the way I live now. That was the old days... Wendy in NH and the PIZZA THEATRE restaurant in Ansonia, Connecticut by the river. Incidentally I had owned at that time and drove a YELLOW CHEVY NOVA like the one in her video. Wendy posed on my car with ADEL and my now deceased ex. My mom is 81 and has the last remaining 2 pics of us with Wendy my ex and Adel together on my car... So if you were with the band I doubt you know me but you might know of SUE & ADEL FRANCONIO and I think I muffed Adels last name... THE REASON FOR THIS IS (WE) ARE ALL STILL ALIVE ME AND ADEL AND A FEW KNOWING FOLKS. WE DON'T KNOW WHERE WENDY GOT BURIED AT LEAST NOT ME. I WAS ENLISTED MILITARY DURING THOSE WILD TIMES AND I WAS ACTIVE MILITARY AT THE TIME JUST HOME ON LEAVE FROM DOVER AFB. I GOT TO CATCH UP ON MY LIFE ABOUT 6 YEARS LATER. SEEMS LIKE A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME BUT IT WASN'T.... IT WAS 4 YEARS AFTER WENDYS DEATH. Wendy acted up on a date her in Pa according to my ex. I was away at the time in Panama on active duty those two had some meeting and that happened just... Weeks before she died. Some fucktard did shit to her and ripped her off is all my late ex could tell me by phone. Sue my ex said Wendy kept talking about a KEVIN... She made no sense when she sat down to talk about it/sense. She was on something my late ex wife told me and she not she was not the night of our meeting in NH. My ex said she kept telling Wendy she had the Yellow Nova of mine and wanted to come get her. My ex said Wendy was in Florida the last time she ever talked to Wendy O.
I stand corrected I was 16 that summer I bought Nova. It was the night of the show in Philadelphia after we put the engine in it and had just enlisted... Now it comes back. Wendy played at a show in Philadelphia because I was still16 and junior drivers license and I got grounded after I came home 2 days later looking like a torn up old alley cat... That was first time we passed Wendy notes on stage my then old lady and now late wife hooked up with a bunch of retarts for a time at the Pressman Hotel I think it was in Philly. When I got home my folks went thru the roof.. I was a Plasmatics fan after that anyway. Wendy was nothing like the singer in person.. Not even close..
It blows me away how Wendy could come off so fierce vicious and wild on stage yet when you the interviews this you realize she was just a really sweet young friendly woman and very cute and sexy makes me miss her all the more!
I remember watching this as a young black child 12/13 years old. Changed who I was and the type of people and music that I wanted to be around. I’m now 58 years old and it still has the same effect on me. 🤘
As well on Fridays on ABC late night comedy show....Sid and Nancy....Nite Flight saw Black Sabbath first video....early 80s Mtv.....Black Sabbath Trashed, Devo peek a boo, Ramones psychotherapy.....Nite Flight interview with Wendy O. Williams and the Another State of Mind documentary ......Get Crazy rock n roll concert comedy with Lee Ving...Rough boys Pete Townsend, Pete Shelly homosapian..... All that good 80s rock 52 now.
Wendy actually spent a weekend with Tom Snyder, they were friends, but not sexually, he really knew she was a "SHOWMAN", but at the same time he was trying to understand her and a new generation. They made a great couple as Plutonic Friends.
I'd kinda forgotten Wendy O. until they played Butcher Baby on KFJC today..a version with her playing sax. That's right! Well, anyways, I saw the Plasmatics at Berkeley Square in the early 80's. This was a very small venue and they set off that flash grenade/smoke bomb and the whole establishment ran out the front door...including the bartender! Watched the show through the front door until the smoke disapated. Shaving cream/electrical tape/thong.Awesome! Sorry you had to go so soon Wendy! RIP
I remember this growing up.I was at pier 62 for the free show and saw them at the Dr.Pepper show.u guys dont even know.this band scared all the adults. With this bougus PC ass world today.u couldnt do anything like this.I got suspended for wearing a PLASMATICS button. The day i bought all there albums on Bleecker st in NYC.I walked out the store and ran into Wendy she signed all the albums and 45s.She spoke 2 me for like a 1/2 hr.She was so cool.i was 14 or 15
HolyCrap that was an Explosion!! wow. You can hear it ditort the speakers & is very compressed. It even screwed up the band for a moment even where they got off time. - I MISS THE PLASMATICS!!
it was an edit. special effects of the time. an explosion capable of doing that to the car would have taken out the entire studio. the song is half live, half taped.
Granted, but the explosions did in fact happen regularly & some werent small. Band members and others have stated sometimes it would be su intense theyd lose their place on guitar or lose hearing on that side etc & they felt sorry for people in the front row because the heat was massive.
Oh, it was. Literally. At my high school, at one of the pep rallies, they spray painted one in the opposing school's colors, & everybody took a sledge hammer to it. It was fun. I guess you can't do that sort of thing, any more. :)
Seeing Ritchie Stotts (who actually did this in the previous song, though for some reason the Tom Snyder crew edited it into both songs) run into the audience, climb across the seats, and fall on the guy in the audience was a pivotal moment for Young Me. Up until then, my impression of rock music and concerts was all choreographed precision. The sheer sloppy Fuck-You'edness of the Plasmatics appealed to me, and still does. "You mean you can DO that?" To me, that spirit of the moment remains the heart of punk rock.
when you wanted to corrupt someone, you took them to a plasmatics gig, and that is the problem with today's kids, that's why there so nice, well-groomed and clean, they need dirt and they need it bad, Wendy RIP,
I remember this episode. I was working at Red Carpet Inns as a night auditor, just about *@it myself when the car blew up. I thought the TNT was just a prop. there is another episode when some Rasta man is trying to light a big fat doobie and Tom keeps blowing our the lighter telling him he can't do that here. Rastaman says "It's my religion I am free to do this" then succeeds in lighting it up, then commercial break and Tom comes back and Rastaman is gone.
Most likely in some faraway corner of the world, far from the prying eyes of the media and social media. I can’t say for sure, but I’d be willing to bet everything I have that there isn’t anything even remotely as visceral and intense as this happening today in America.
No, this is definitely not the original airing. Proof, you ask? At 2:01 Richie is clearly shown onstage and in the audience at the same time. She spray painted F##k The Status Quo on the car. Still great.
So weird that they reused the guitarist running into the audience from the first segment. They even had a little editing blooper where it showed him onstage and in the crowd at the same time. Also gotta love the cheesy video stagger effect. Good stuff.
This isn't the original airing. The original showed her clearly painting Fornicate on the side of the car. Ritchie didn't go up in th audience during this song. It was spliced in from Head banger. Which Tom Snyder introduced as Head Ranger.
I meet her in Houston, my brother won a new tv from a local rock radio station and Wendy came to our apartment to bust up the old television, which she did and then left the mess for us to clean up..lol..that was around 82 I think.
lol, they used the same car the next night, the spray "paint" wiped off, she only broke the headlights and windshield, the rest of the car went right back together, it was designed to come apart after the flash and noise maker.
Fuckin' hell!! Maybe it's just me, but today, they might have a little difficulty getting away with doing this. Something about safety rules and such. That's too bad.
poor Tom Snyder having Wendy Williams and Kiss with Ace hi as f**k what an hard job. Later wendy and Ace made a tour together and she was going to make an LP with Gene Simmons.

I saw this on the Tom Snyder Show when I was in 8th grade, never forgot it. She was great.
I was a teenager and watched it when originally broadcast - we could not believe what we were seeing!
Wish she was still with us. So sad , I saw over 200 shows. Was fan club president and roadie. Nicest people I ever worked with.
This was 10x more destructive and badass than Keith Moon's drum explosion
I can'tstand believe they are aloud to do that that could be extremely dangerous
Wish I had that Chevy Nova today.
Me tooo looolol
I swear if she were still alive, not only the music world, but the WHOLE world would be a much cooler place!
Wendy's social statement about authority and corruption of power certainly is eartastic and visually overpowering. What a lovely roll model.
Was there ever anything like it on TV???? Tom Snyder was never speechless, but when this was finished he nearly was.
This is what's missing in today's ROCK Scene ... EXCITEMENT !!!!😎👍
Time for a REAL ROCK Movie...
WENDY O. WILLIAMS 😁🤘
Greatest performance on television ever.
Beefheart on SNL rates a 10. This rates a 2.
Chris Stokes only second to their SCTV performance,....
@@nickygentz "Doom Song" for Gil Fisher/John Candy --->
Both great. No one else has even come close!
Too bad the song is pants
@@Daniel_Delayne”pants”?
Snyder was a great interviewer, and I felt sorry for that Nova. RIP Wendy.

Omg.I miss the early 80s.Wendy O where ever you are, thank you, thank you.....
Well, to be perfectly accurate, it certainly is entertaining.

flipping great
This happened on network TV. We will never see anything like this ever again.
awesome, wendy is a legend
when you wanted to corrupt someone, you took them to a plasmatics gig, and that is the problem with today's kids, that's why there so nice, well-groomed and clean, they need dirt and they need it bad, Wendy RIP,

this was raw, this was real. what followed by others was just a pale imitation.

They must have to notify the Fire Dept. before Wendy's shows
lol, they used the same car the next night, the spray "paint" wiped off, she only broke the headlights and windshield, the rest of the car went right back together, it was designed to come apart after the flash and noise maker.
tomitstube you're so full of shit
Nope
No Not a Classic NOVA!!!!!
classic? now it is, just crap back then.
Bych with bawlz bigga dan da bois.
How was it pulled off from a special fx viewpoint?
I think Tom Snyder had to had to change his drawers after this!!!
🙋⚡✨
What happened to that Nova?
That's entertainment.
What a nice young lady....... ;)

What a fox.
Love the way she destroy the car very 🔥

that was a bitchin 2 door third gen Chevy Nova SS or at least it had the SS hood.. This makes me sick.
Jacob LePage
That’s what I was thinking as I watched. We didn’t know any better in 1981. Probably Class II explosives, ... used inside a television studio? Wild. Totally wild.
Jacob LePage Axel Foley used to drive a Nova. True story.
Cars suck.
It was definitely a nice Nova but fuck it it was Wendy's way to express her art through expression
Damn, I would have liked to had that Nova. Idiots!
She's so crazy and controversial
FUCKIN A!!.... ThatsABOUTit
luv you more than can be measured =--_+_:
Who was rhe drummer? I don't recognize him at !
They really blew up the car......wow
That was a good car. She had to destroy it.
Back then (early 80’s) no one gave a shit about Novas. It was considered a hunk of crap by most people in those days. Different story today.
Fornicate the Status Quo
(what was painted on the car and shown the 1st airing)
The Tom Snyder show was the greatest. He would have Charles Manson on one night and The Plasmatics on another. He seemed like such a square, but I think he was genuinely interested in people from all walks of life.
1981.
F*cking Google/CZcams not posting dates.
May 1981.
Hence all the people whining about the car. Anyone old enough to remember that era should be able to remember that Novas were considered as nothing special in ‘81.
3:20 Punk Prance?
I suppose future generations will grieve over the junking of Evos and WRXes with body rot, high mileage and bad engines. I suppose a high mileage/weak compression Nova SS would've been high school bash 'em up fodder at the time.
Ну что, ну прям почти "Я гуманист, я созидатель, я обновлённый председатель" :))
tell me they dont destroy that car please!!
DID SHE JUST LIGET BLOW A CAR UP ON STAGE? THATS FUCKIN PUNK.
Wow Wendy trashed a nice muscle car i'll never know but atleast it was a chevy & not a Mopar :-)
Those were different times. Nobody gave a single shit about Novas in ‘81.
The wrong car got blown up here, They could've been patriotic and delivered a Mercedes or a Toyota to such a fate.
Ehh...they probably got a good deal on this car.
Well said
this i have to say was FUCKED she could have been somebody but looking like a freak and screaming then destroying a car was not my type of music, too bad she was a pretty gal and i bet could really sing if she wanted to but she choose that till her dying day! Rip Wendy still thought you were great as a person will miss ya
I kinda like it
Obviously you’re not a golfer. 🕶️
This proves Green Day are posers
not a Chevy fan i guess
Oh my gosh, I remember this.....she was so grossly obscene. Lets face it, she could not sing.
Flutter Bize listen to the damned,
Yeah, unfortunately, the music sucked.
Her vocal abilities were never the point, sparky.
Smashing a car....Ho Hum...Zappa did that 13 years earlier...and with greater effect.
Naval intelligence stooge Zappa did it with less effect
He sucked
He did? And with “greater effect”, you say? Is that why literally nobody ever talks about Zappa blowing up a car, but pretty much *EVERYBODY* still talks about Wendy O doing it? Yeah ok. 👍
Zappa famously took a shit on stage once. That was done with “greater effect”, maybe. 💩
