I've watched dozens of workbench videos by now, and this is exactly what I've been looking for! So far I've only seen one other video that hides the table saw when not in use and changes its height, but I like this idea way better. Thank you American Woodworker!
Richard love this power tool friendly work bench. I had been looking for something that I could put my Dewalt table saw into and move it around the garage. I downloaded the plans and build it over a two week period. Thanks again for the great work bench idea.
This is a very nice design for small work spaces and perfect for a hobbyist. Some of the flimsy parts can be redesigned and reinforced for heavy use. The concept is very nice and useful. Thanks for uploading this video.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I'm planning on building an new house with a complete two-car garage sized shop. Even with all that floor space, this bench makes perfect sense for storing my oscillating drum sander and router table. Thanks for the excellent idea!
Full of ideas. No need for negative posts. Modify it or improve it if you are critical. I think I could just have the saw on a table with locking castors and pull it out. It might be a little lower than ideal, but I could rip long boards then. The blade guard seems to be disposed of in reality, as it would be a pain to fit it and remove with each use. As you will need storage for power tools etc it might be better to have shelves under the bench and store the saw elsewhere, instead of having a chest of drawers elsewhere taking up space. The saw could then be on a firm base at the right height, and have the blade guard and dust extraction on. Just thinking on the hoof😀 Interesting video.
Great design and I'm impress. But there's a flaw in your design in regard to the table saw and how the bench will get in the way as soon as you want to use the groove. Unless you can extend the groove to the bench then it might actually make a better groove than just the one in the table saw if you know what i mean. Thanks for the video.
I made this bench and put drawers on the right side. The only problem I had was the lever. Using 1/2 inch plywood I had the bushing falling out and the cable elongating the hole. So I used 3/4 plywood, it is a tight fit but works great, just like in the video. I have a Bosch benchtop router table and just finished building a cabinet on casters for it to go on top. When on top the router tabletop is at the same height as the workbench.
I love this concept! I'm considering building it to house my DeWalt 735 planer and spindle wander. Also, due to the size of my shop and considering I have a full size cabinet table saw, I would make the bench at a height to also function as my outfeed/assembly table as well. Are plans available for this?
all over a good project, but i would optimize the circular saw mount it feels unsolid to me. i would rather mount it solid fixed under the table. no need to make it removable only lower the blade if you dont like it thats it
There are a few factors in building a table saw. One place I discovered which successfully combines these is the Wilfs Wood Blueprint (google it if you're interested) definately the no.1 plan i've heard of. Check out all the awesome info .
I'd love to buy the plans and/or the magazine. The web site is useless. This is the first time I've ever tried to purchase a back issue and found a magazine site that lumps several magazines plus books into a random search result. Is the magazine still available?
It's not - but PopWood now has the content, and I've just posted this article on our site: www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/power-tool-friendly-bench-richard-tendick
That table saw set up looks like you'll be joining the "less that 10 fingers club" in a hurry. From the legs that stick out that you could possibly trip over, to the fact that the swing part of the mount isn't locked, I can see something getting bumped and your hand being turned to mince meat in a jiffy.
Wow! Awesome design! Total efficient use of space in a small table! If you’ve got some time would you mind giving feedback on my shop table build? Would love an experts opinion! I know this is 4 years old but still incredible
As Chris Arndt, I'd love to buy the plans and/or the magazine. The web site is useless. This is the first time I've ever tried to purchase a back issue and found a magazine site that lumps several magazines plus books into a random search result. Is the magazine still available?
What power tools required to complete 90%+ projects? Your table has three, after those there's a drill press, miter saw, planner, lathe and band saw, any others?
what is funny is he said, we built this with 4 sheets of plywood. The way we made the top is with a hollow core door lol well that's not plywood last time I checked.
Richard can you post a video for the outfield table published June July 2014 issue? Just purchased a delta 36-725 and need a out feed extension. Too complicated on magazine
I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great czcams.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.
The solution to many of my problems! Thanks Much! Question. Does the table saw sit flush with the work table in the upright position? If so there wouldn't be any space for the fence overhang. Am I missing something?
I too was looking at the saw, saying to myself "How's that gonna work with the fence installed??" I have a Dewalt contractor's table saw (DWE945X, I think), and the back part of the fence moving back and forth prevents you from having a outfeed table perfectly flush... That is, unless you are cutting something super wide and have the fence all the way over.
The subjects covered in this wood working book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) varies from wood types to tool types and also uses. Some other subjects range from the different types of wood and their different levels of difficulty in terms of managing them. In case you are still a novice in woodworking, then you will find this book very helpful.
That's Great, I'm retired and looking for possible hobbies to get into such as woodworking and/or blacksmithing? Unfortunetly I have virtually no experience with either Skill/Art (since high school). This table might work for a newbie with half of a garage? Though, I see that it's too thin for tool(s) on the other side (maybe hand tools)? The accessories are mounted on the end (near vice), correct (or maybe on the other side)? There seems to be enough room for a small drawer under the saw? Will there be provisions for dust collection and/or piping for air tools? Thank-you for the time.
American Woodworker Magazine was bought out by another company. I went looking around trying to find the magazine which contained this bench. The company that bought the magazine offers a collection of all American Woodworker magazines from 1985-2014 (which should include the edition with this bench) for $15. It is all on a CD, I just ordered mine. Here is the link www.shopwoodworking.com/american-woodworker-magazine-1985-2014-compiliation-cd
I must say that “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) is a great wood working book. It provides a lot of general info that would help any beginner and also some seasoned carpenter. I`ve been very amazed how often I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.
The most dangerous tool in the workshop is now only supported by a couple of drawer slides, a gravity lean against the table, and a loose cable..............what could go wrong? This design is too clever by half. A smaller separate table for the table saw with similar retractable casters that can be rolled over to the workbench for the out feed would be better.
it don't really make any difference as long as you know what he's saying! Does it! A mother questioned her little boy after hearing him praying - only saying his ABC'S! He said the Lord could make words out of his letters!
+Ad Nast, PS, below there was a link for the original story from American Woodworker #170. Here it is: www.popularwoodworking.com/wp-content/uploads/AW_PTBench.pdf
I started searching for a pre-owned used magazine issue (AW #170) on craigslist ebay amazon etc. i have had luck, but thats about the best i can tell u.

Of all the tricky benches I have seen, this is the one I think I will aim for!
Richard love this power tool friendly work bench. I had been looking for something that I could put my Dewalt table saw into and move it around the garage. I downloaded the plans and build it over a two week period. Thanks again for the great work bench idea.
Beautiful work, I love how you incorporated the table saw and spindle sander!
Great idea and well thought out. Very adaptable for anyone's particular needs.
Brilliant design!!! I am going to make one for my limited space workshop... thanks for posting!
A truly remarkable bench, you are a very clever man, thanks for posting from Garry in the UK
Wow! A lot of thought went into building that. Great job!
The sliding out then lifting up part is great.
thanks for the idea, I am a wood, metal, mechanical worker so I have a lot of tools to store in very limited space (2 car garage) this will help tons!
That is very nice looking power tool bench and it's nice to working with both hand on your own designs of project and keep it up with amazing designs
What a nice and very creative video of Power tool friendly bench its great favor keep doing and keep safe
Yes, is a great project. Congratulations.
Great bench! I'm trying to limit my power tools, but I sure can use that swivel-to-raise action. Thanks!
Excellent work bench. Almost a piece of art. So well thought out. I want a subscription to the mag, and thus issue
this is just what i was looking for. thanks
When I see this video, I have new idea about work bench....thank for sharing the idea
This is a very nice design for small work spaces and perfect for a hobbyist. Some of the flimsy parts can be redesigned and reinforced for heavy use. The concept is very nice and useful. Thanks for uploading this video.
small workspace means no driving around with a workbench like he showed us.
Great job 👍

VERY CREATIVE - great bench for my garage.
The recessed power strip is clever!
I love this workbench
I would love to build that.. if only I had a place for it. When I get that though, I most certainly will :)

Facing the door with plywood...good call.

4:54 he actually starts showing it you...
Neat design. I imagine hard to execute with little carpentry experience.
Nice-I need to do this with a radial arm-router-and I guess skilsaw as a table saw because radial arm is too big and heavy to store under
Cool bench
Hallo

great job...
Nice bench for a small shop
Genius!

nice job, where can i get the plans to calculate the materials tu buy?
great

Thats pretty sweet.
I'd like to buy the plans TODAY - the project is not listed on your web site that I can find...
I give it two-three weeks before all the levers and gizmos fall apart.
How would you calculate the right height for each user???
Wow! Awesome design! Total efficient use of space in a small table! If you’ve got some time would you mind giving feedback on my shop table build? Would love an experts opinion! I know this is 4 years old but still incredible
As far as a heavy tool I'd rather not set on benchtop to use as an example I'd choose a planer myself...
how do i get the plans or the back issue of the magazine ?
How long will the ball bearing drawer slides last getting full of sawdust? Seems to me they would get clogged up rather quick.

casters, nails, screws, glue, 2x4s, and NOT JUST the "hilarious" 4 sheets of plywood, INCLUDES 4 sheets, .... seriously, you people.....

At around $50 per sheet of 3/4" plywood these plywood projects of yesteryear are kind of pricey. 2x lumber is much cheaper these days.
where can I purchase plans for this build
Where can I purchas plans for this build

Do you see the Catch 22 here? ;-)
Can i buy the plans only, without the magazine ?
Nice
Where are the plans for the table?
now that its yrs later, the plans should be available somewhere other than an old magazine
just posted them: www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/power-tool-friendly-bench-richard-tendick
THANK YOU! :D I plan on building this on Sat (well, a personally mod'd variant, but still!)
Much appreciated!!
does it also fold laundry?

+eddoct Were you able to find the plans? Thanks in advance.
+Ryan Swain yeah, it was in the CD I linked. The CD has a bunch of other projects including this one. definitely worth the money...
+eddoct I just checked the website. Price is $99.99, not $15.00
Wow I guess it was on major sale when I bought it, sorry.
I found a link for the plans only. www.popularwoodworking.com/wp-content/uploads/AW_PTBench.pdf
In the tall tool category, Is there enough swing and lift capability/clearance for a bench top 10 inch drill press or light bandsaw?

neat, except that the bench top makes that particular type of table saw fence nonfunctional.
This is where you can subscribe to the old AW books: www.scribd.com/document/349519293/American-Woodworker-No-170-February-March-2014

Looks like a tripping hazard to me in front of the table saw.
Are the plans for this still available?
+Ad Nast, you can find the full article on Popular Woodworking site: www.popularwoodworking.com/article/power-tool-friendly-bench/
+Ad Nast, PS, below there was a link for the original story from American Woodworker #170. Here it is: www.popularwoodworking.com/wp-content/uploads/AW_PTBench.pdf
Could you make this thing a little harder to build?
No joke. Plus the table saw part just feels sketchy to me. Good way to lose a finger.
His shop is too clean.
where can I purchase the AW #170 issue? Any info will be greatly appreciated.
I just want the plans for this workbench!
+Chad Borchardt Me too, did you find them?
I started searching for a pre-owned used magazine issue (AW #170) on craigslist ebay amazon etc. i have had luck, but thats about the best i can tell u.
Ok cool it worked out, I found a digital version so I'm good as well
Did you pay anything for it? where did you find it?
It's called a riving knife, not a splitter...
I found a link for the plans only. www.popularwoodworking.com/wp-content/uploads/AW_PTBench.pdf
pitty about the saw he used, accurate as a hand saw
nonsense on wheels

Tell him yourself.
It's made of plywood , absolutely crap,it won't last two minutes
The video is 7 minutes long, so you have already been made a fool of. :)
You need to clear your throat...and its annoying me..sounds like you have cold stuck in there...
+Alex Jones You need to fix your face..and its annoying me..you look like a fucking duck, a hideous ugly one at that. Have a great day!
i really don't like this bench at all.
