The 2021 Dodge Durango R/T is a Muscle Car SUV

  • The Dodge Durango has been on sale now for 11 years without a major redesign, which means it isn't too competitive as far as mainstream three-row family crossovers go. So to make up for this, Dodge has turned it into the muscle car of the three-row SUV segment, and despite its flaws, it makes for a unique package.

    It is not the typical RT, it has the Tow and Go package which has the same exhaust and suspension of the SRT hence the loud exhaust, you can call it SRT lite (SRT look with the smaller 5.7L engine instead of 6.4L on the SRT).

    Speakers in the D pillars come with the Harmon-Kardon sound system upgrade. The Alpine system is standard. Don't hold me to this, but I believe the H-K system has 19 speakers and the Alpine has nine.
    As for your getting into the third row, the second row captain's chair tilts forward to make access easier.
    The drive mode buttons on the center console means this R/T is equipped with Tow 'n' Go that has a throatier exhaust as well as the SRT suspension and a limited-slip differential. The Tow 'n' Go option also adds six-piston Brembos (black) front and four-piston calipers rear. Red Brembos with the SRT performance brake pads is a $495 option for ALL R/Ts, not just Tow 'n' Go.
    As for your remarks about the potholes. The firmness of the ride depends upon which drive mode you're in. The suspension has adjustable Bilsteins.

    • @icecoldac3
      @icecoldac3 Před 2 lety +1

      HK sound system worth the upgrade over the Alpines?
      Also what’s the major difference between the black brembos and SRT red brembos?

    • @TheCondoInRedondo
      @TheCondoInRedondo Před 2 lety +2

      @@icecoldac3 Well, I have 'em both. Frankly, for the vast majority of popular music, I cannot detect a difference. That's probably because of two factors:
      1) There's so much glass that stereo imaging is lost to reflections... particularly with "wall of sound" arrangements. There's so much reflection that XM and ordinary radio gets muddled. I haven't yet tried opera (or other classical music where stereo separation is easier to hear), but I will do that this weekend and will report back. This is why audiophile stores use curtains or sound-absorbing foam along the walls of their audition rooms.
      2) I'm not a sound engineer. But, I'd wager that the additional speakers in the HK option further muddy separation.
      As for wattage.... I have never felt the Alpine to be underpowered... even with the windows and sunroof open.
      Okay. I lied. I actually am an engineer, though not a sound engineer. The extra wattage of the HK does not really translate to more "hearable" loudness. Remember, your ears hear logarithmically To achieve a measely three decibel loudness improvement, you'd need for the HK amp to be fully twice as powerful at the Alpine, not just twenty percent more powerful. So, don't waste your money if your aim is "more wattage".
      All that said, I must confess I've heard one or two songs that were very well produced with good dynamic range and the HK did make an impression that the Alpine did not. But, that's with the fader shoved all the way to the front seats so that the rear speakers are muted (except for the subwoofer, of course). This is so sounds from the rear speakers don't hit your ears a few milliseconds later, muddying up the sound from the front speakers.
      I'll speak to the brakes in another post.

    • @TheCondoInRedondo
      @TheCondoInRedondo Před 2 lety +1

      @@icecoldac3 There are two differences that I'm aware of:
      1) The SRT Brembo rotors are two-piece slotted, compared to the Black TnG Brembo rotors which are single-piece smooth. The rotor diameters are identical red/black. That's 13.75 inches for the front.
      There is both good and bad here.
      The slotted/two-piece rotors will (on paper at least) resist fade better than the single-piece rotors. But, in practice, this advantage really only applies to track applications or if you're doing repeated launches. You've got to be slamming the brakes a lot for the fade advantage to be noticeable. If all you're doing is slowing your Airstream during that eight-mile descent after passing through The Eisenhower Tunnel, you're not going to notice fade. If all you expect from the Brembos (compared to the stock R/T brakes) is to shorten stopping distance from 126 feet down to 116 feet (from 60 MPH) there will be no difference between black or red calipers. You've got the same diameter rotors and the same 295 Pirelli's as the SRT... Furthermore, your TnG is 200-250 pounds lighter than the SRT, everything else being equal.
      Theoretically, two-piece rotors can be split such that you only need to replace the outer ring. Whether these SRT rotors can do that, I do not know. I'm speaking in generalities.
      Also, I have been told that slotted rotors are not supposed to be resurfaced (turned). They're supposed to be replaced. It's got something to do with "lathe chatter". I am NOT a machinist. So, if there are machinists who wish to stomp on me and claim they can turn slotted rotors, go for it. I won't push back.
      2) The red Brembos are supposed to come with "SRT performance pads". They feature an ablative material which is why they wear down faster and release more dust. Specifically, the dust is supposed to carry away the heat when it releases from the pad SRT replacement pads are supposed to cost more, too.
      The dust is why I opted NOT to get them. I was quite willing to spend the extra $495 for the red brakes until I read on the fora about customer irritation with how quickly the wheels would discolor... to the point where posts were made pointing to third-party ceramic pads that eliminate the brake dust problem. I dunno if this is true. I'm not a brake guy. And yet, here it is now ME complaining about brake dust. Go figure.
      As for how much "better" the SRT pads are compared to the ones that come with the TnG black calipers, I cannot say.

    I've owned 3 Durangos. The last 2 have been the R/T...and we're considering a 2021+ with Tow and Go BECAUSE of that exhaust. The Durango is still selling well BECAUSE it's what people want and need in an SUV. Power, Utility and Attitude. Dodge has done an amazing job at building attitude into each of their cars. Is it perfect? No, but at least it hasn't been reduced to a 4 cylinder turbo eco machine (with a quite exhaust). Unfortunately, the pussification of America is well underway...and these cars are going away with it. Buy one and hang on to it.

    I think you might have missed the mark with why this is appealing to some, if not many, who are looking and actually buying this rig. It has towing capacity! Well above others in it's class. My main reason for buying this rig is not because I'm in to muscle, it's because the husbands truck can now tow the 5th wheel and I can tow the boat! Makes our weekend getaways easy and no more borrowing somebody else's truck to tow. Also, I don't want a big SUV for everyday, BTDT. I liked my last little sporty car that is now off with the youngest to college. So, going back to a big SUV, NO interest. This is much easier to maneuver for everyday errands etc... Boat towing is evidently a big deal in 2021, as everybody and their brother now owns, or wants to own a boat, as evidenced by super crazy demand. I guess it's easy to social distance in a boat. Anyway, though some boats are docked, most are still towed. I've got this baby on order mainly for that reason. I have to say it will be nice not to have to wait for hubby to come home on summer evenings to go launch the boat! Yes, this is essentially the sister model to Jeep Grand Cherokee, and super similar in and out, but guess what, good luck finding the Cherokee in a V8 ready to tow, damn near impossible right now.

    • @TheCondoInRedondo
      @TheCondoInRedondo Před 2 lety

      The drone is there if you think about it. Of course, how much of it you hear depends upon the shape of what you're towing. The sound is not going to reflect off the bow of your boat back towards the Durango. But if you're hauling an Airstream, then yes. Expect reflections off the front surface of the travel trailer to magnify the drone at some frequencies.
      To Dodge's credit, they do have "active noise-cancelling" to attack the exhaust note during highway cruise.

    • @TheCondoInRedondo
      @TheCondoInRedondo Před 2 lety

      If you tow a lot, you might consider the Wagoneer, which is body-on-frame. That will help isolate the cabin from trailer and hitch noise and vibration.
      If you tow only occasionally, the Durango is quite capable, particularly with the 5.7 hemi. That said, there is a CZcams channel of some guy with a large travel trailer and his Durango is a six-cylinder.

    I don’t know why it aggravates me when a person purchases a vehicle just to complain about it. I know that this is just a review, but it’s still aggravating 😂.Who doesn’t like the sound of a hemi and exhaust? Who cares about touch points in a Dodge? The only sound that’s annoying is the sound of all the whinny complaining…

    You literally have no idea what you’re reviewing or what you’re speculating about.

      I really think the refresh makes it look like a completely different vehicle. V8 hemi will hold value in the future because V8's are going away next year.

    imagine you pay somebody to review and sell your car and he just starts straight hating on the vehicle is not really a honest review you can tell he is a Dodge hater since the beginning of the video
