I saw him start to shift in the corner of my vision cause I kept my awareness. So thank you for these videos. I also did nothing more than shake my head and continue on with my enjoyable ride.

The bike is small enough to be hidden by the A pillar of the car and as the car turns the bike moves and continues to hide in the A pillar.
Try it yourself, sit in a car and have a friend walk until they are hidden .

I drive motorcycle since 51 years....started when i was 14 with 50cc...than 250cc...350cc...1000cc...750cc...900cc...200cc..now here in the Philippines a 600cc Yamaha Tenere built 1986....and i love to drive fast but always the mode of driving has to be ZEN state...total awareness of everything i mean everything plus your intuition and feelings. I love this state of being on the motorbike...in the absolute NOW.
What i want to say too without insulting anyone , as much i watch your channel, most like,60 to 70% of the riders are not experienced and do not know their bikes how they react to extreme maneuver....but sometimes we just have to be lucky too.

Yeah, I can see how someone not familiar with the accent might take it as sarcasm but, being from the East, it sounds sincere to me.
In surfing, we call a “high side” “going over the falls”. That’s when the wave’s surface waters’ momentum overcomes your desire to dive deep and then takes you through the same path as the rest of the water. This usually results in feeling the same impact as the lip (or crest) of the wave pact on the surface of the water, so you get the wind knocked out of you just before being held under by the wave AGAIN!

That happened to me once, not surfing, just trying to jump a big wave before it broke. Knocked the air out of me, then slammed me against the sand two or three times while it held me underwater. I was 10 or something like that. Quite frightening!

I just recently (in the last year) went through basic driving training and defensive driving and I watch that white SUV turn in to the orange bike and my instant reaction is: "How did this person pass their drivers test? They need to have been checking that lane at least three times before that merge happened and they would have seen the bike multiple times in that window".
It amazes me, coming fresh off of that training seeing how many poeple drive like complete lunatics. Everything they learned just right out the window the second they get their license. Even with the sun at the biker's back, that driver would have been able to see the bike at several different distances before merging if they'd checked more than once. Your eyes are attracted to things moving, or changing, right? It just tells me they didn't look at all before merging and by that time the bike was already in their blind spot.
Exactly I always watch for following distance. That suv made that sudden merge cos they were bumper riding.
What amazed me of that crash was how the bike had like 3000 years worth of time to stop, using bike brakes.
My 90s BMW car at that speed stops in like 10' lol, so I'd expect far more from a high performer like that bike.
@@RobertMorgan Bikes have garbage stopping distances compared to cars. A sport bike stops like a passenger car. A light cruiser stops like a van. A big Harley stops like a truck. And that's maximum braking. Cars are far easier to reach max braking with, and you're not going to flip over if you lock a wheel for a second, so it's safer to start mashing the brakes, which means you've got even more latency on a bike to brake safely unless you're a super pro.
Hopefully ABS on bikes gets good enough (or already has) that you can just mash the brakes on the newer stuff, but you still have mechanical limits so you're not stopping that well. Even at 1 gee braking, you're not stopping in time in this case. Let's say the bike's doing 40 mph, that's about 60 ft/s. 1 gee is 32 ft/s² which we'll call 30 ft/s² (even cars don't typically hit a full gee), so it takes about 2 seconds to stop, with an average speed of 30 ft/s, giving a total of 60 feet to stop.
If the other guy is doing 20 mph (30 ft/s), it takes 1 second to slow down to his speed, during which time you're closing at an average of 15 ft/s. You're traveling 45 feet, but he's moving forward 30 feet, so you need to be 15 feet or more (about a car length) behind him to avoid him. It looks like he was half that distance when he really got on the brakes, and I'm really not sure about the relative speeds. Maybe your Beamer would stop in time, but probably not.
@mootie667 The problem here is a combination of things: first, the difference in speeds between lanes means the other guy needs to act quickly to get into what he thought was an open space, so he's rushing. Second, the sunlight means would have glanced in the mirrors and still managed to not see the motorcycle through the glare, even when the motorcycle is right in the middle of the mirror.
I've seen people run into city busses they didn't see through the sun glare. The solution is to keep your windows and mirrors squeaky clean, and slow down. And don't trust mirrors you can't see out of. But it's not inherently an issue of not looking when the sun glare is really bright. It's entirely conceivable he looked a couple times and still didn't see the bike, which is made worse by the fact that he's rushing to avoid the stopped traffic which means "looking" got shortened to "glancing".
On the BMW video, you skipped and missed the best part 😂

I think he could reasonably have seen the bike and stopped if he was really paying attention, but the bike was also going fairly fast as he rounded the turn, and he came out of the shadows. You always have to be careful of that kind of thing when you're entering a new road, especially if you can carry a bunch of speed onto it.
I think the driver was more at fault, but the biker could certainly have had better planning.
If I remember correctly, end of the angry bmw, he did a burnout and popped his tire. In my more experienced years of riding, I've learned to stay away from pointless shenanigans. Have a good time, enjoy the elements, the sights and sounds. Become conscious of everything.
I crashed on black ice a couple months ago, I didn't start trusting wet asphalt until recently (now that it's warm), but I guarantee that once it gets cold again no riding on wet asphalt EVER.

The no 1 most common deadly accident for mc riders is you going straight and someone in the opposing lane turning left right in front of you. Whenever we see that coming up, slow down and get ready to go around or just come to a stop, if you dont see a way out. A lot of them come down to people driving too fast and person in the car doesnt not seeing us.. Bc of this, I just assume they dont me you never fly through intersections (you cld also get hit by someone running a red light) or when lane filtering. You never know when someone;s gonna open a door, or jump into the other lane w/o looking carefully. Riding safe greatly reduces the chance of a crash.
When riding a motorcycle, or when driving a car, but especially on a motorcycle, you have to ride in a manner that is cautious of other motorists not seeing you at all. Any car you interact with, they may see you, or they may not see you, and you have to anticipate their most extreme actions and put yourself in a position to navigate around the threat. You have no right to be speeding, don't anticipate anyone to make way for you to travel faster than the speed limit, even if they can see you. Take a step back and concentrate on riding defensively, and you can't be mad because you were wrong first by speeding or riding too fast for traffic even if that's below the speed limit.
So many people get pissed off on the road. If something happens to me im just like whatever. Not worth my time.

11:30 - When I started riding many years ago, I had a friend who had just bought a new '79 CB750F. He had the bike slide out onto its engine cover, at speed, twice, on different days, only to regain his footing and continue on his way as if nothing happened. Two "just high enough" sides. Lucky teenagers we were.
I merged onto the highway once and it was pretty clear so I ripped it about 110 to the fast lane and a statie saw me and thankfully gave me the siren blare and a head nod to slow the f down lol

When I found my 08 1600 nomad in barn, had new tires put on it right away and fork seals done. Before I hit the highway on a 870lb bike I was the parking lot king buddy..lots of progressive breaking with back brakes manly 2/3 back 1/3 front. Lots of u turns, figure 8,s fast stopping circular moves..two days, made sure this bike was road ready, and me. I was on Yamaha team in my teens..Lots of practice. I keep a first-aid kit and water in saddle bags.
The clip at 20:00, the guy filming was in the wrong. The car, before switching lanes had turn signal on. So it was the motorcyclist's responsibility to slow down just as anyone would do on motorcycle or car.

To be fair to the driver at 15:20 - they had their signal on and in the left turn lane which is very visible from the yield sign - that motorcyclist had more than enough time to take it easy and avoid.
Highsides are terrifying. Flipped my GPZ at about 100 mph after blowing out the front tyre on a broken bottle, time slows down, fly, slam into the tarmac, watch the armco coming towards me at high speed, stopped before that and think - oh holy hell the bike's following me. It end-over-ended past me and smashed into the armco. Writeoff.

As somebody who was only recently thought about getting a motorcycle, your videos are excellent. Yea they have scared me away from the idea of getting a MC 😂 but they are so informative about what to think about and do if I ever do decide to get a bike. keep them coming they’re very useful.
Nah fam, stick to speed limits and ride your own ride not how other people want you to ride and you will be safe. People speed and act surprised when they get injured or empty their wallets on repairs. Ride to your own ability and be defensive and you’ll love every second of it.
The last rider failed to countersteer. You can see them turn the handlebars to the left instead of pushing on the left grip to steer left. All while grabbing a handful of front brake
Black Ice, Riding in Canada in spring . you usually encounter black ice in places that are predominently shaded for most of the day.

Had a highway patrol behind me once when I was waiting to make a left hand turn.....there was some invisible antifreeze in my path. Good thing it was only 15ft in front of me.....I wasn't going fast....stopped..left turn. My bike just went out from under me like it was ice. I didn't even hit the ground...kinda hopped out of the way and skied backwards stopping in a push up position.
CHP was walking up to me and slipped...😂

00:11:33 , One way I've been told to *try* to save a highside is by lifting your outside leg up and towards the outside of the corner to try to stabilize the bike (easier said than done, as seen in moto gp). It would seem the rider has to catch it as soon as the tire starts slipping. The idea is that the rider has added too much throttle too soon before removing enough lean angle to keep traction on both wheels. So if the rider shifts their center of gravity away from the corner it should help offset the violent attempt of the bike to correct itself upright.
I will say that this saved me from my one could've-been-highside, but that's my only real experience.
That lane filtering/splitting is just … not wise and shouldn’t be legal in any state. Too dangerous!

@14:06 - Dan, this is a common theme throughout, yet NO ONE will say anything about it to correct the common actions. Do you see how this car is turning left and the motorcycle continues heading in the direction to go in front of the car? - MISTAKE - You're going to get crunched EVERY time! The car is moving forward and turning left. There's plenty of opportunity for the motorcycle to go behind the vehicle. Two things that will never ever change in the world of car driving....1) a car can not change it's path of direction of 180 degrees in an instant. The car is already going forward, let the car go and ride in behind the car....because as long as the car moves forward, it closes the gap in front....but also at the same time widens the gap behind it.
Oh, and for the second rule in the world of car driving....horn honking, rev bombing, and hitting the car never ever works. "Go around the car and move on with your life". - Just sayin'

13:46 in the aerospace world, this is called contrast blindness, and fighters use it to their advantage by attacking from the angle of the sun where possible because the enemy planes won't see them. Of course with radar, this is more difficult.

20:16 - is why people's mirrors get punched. Lol the sad fact is most people don't actually check their blind spots. They either assume, half ass check, or rely on their new blind spot sensors.
Curiosity question though, how well do blind spot sensors detect motorcycles? I find it's a bit inconsistent with cars at times, so I can only imagine with bikes.

First clip funny story i was making a right turn at an intersection on a 95 degree day and ran over some of that tar repair aka (black snake) my bike slide sideways and i curbed it mistakenly putting my left foot down (dirt bike brain took over?) Broke my tibia with soft tissue damage to my ankle. Was wearing boots so damage was minimal to the foot/ankle. Bike was unharmed...

This happens really often here in my country, I just stop steering, (so the bike straights it's self), and I apply brakes, and pass the loose gravel/oil,
Once passed, I start leaning again.
Of couse if you are like, leaning at 150Km/h, best of luck, but in most cases this helps.
When you practice your wheelies is your foot on your rear brake so you can bring your bike down if it goes back too far? Wheelies freak me out.
Same, that's why my current bike has wheelie control. I started riding in my 40's so that might have something to do with it. 🙂

14:04 is something that bothers me to no end, weather it happens to bike or a car, and I see it all the time. Regardless if he saw the motorcycle or not, why the hell do people put themselves into the oncoming lane and just poke along at what looks like 5 km/h ?
I understand you don't want to turn into a parking lot at full speed, but for the love of god if you're going to put yourself in the way of oncoming traffic (even if you don't see anyone there at the moment, you never know if someone will be there 1 second later, as this clip shows) then move your damn ass out of the f'ing way.

The orange bike - use your horn three blips an stay out of the blind spot.
Old man left turn - should be engine breaking with uncontrolled intersection - you gotta understand it's the most dangerous situation for a rider. And way back - the rider should have been covering the brake - which he wasn't because almost no braking before impact.
U get a six sense at this over time and 99 times it looks weird but necessary to slow down and when they commit the turn no braking distance is lost.
Why does nobody talk about lights on motorcycle - fog lights down low in a triangle pattern are easier for cagers to pickup. It's an observation I have had made - IMHO would help with the drivers who look right thru you with a single headlight.
What I would do for that oil slick and not being able to swerve.... What I do is you can still maintain the turn but you go to lean the bike up. Don't have it leaned at all. Like you can still make your turn but just throw it up straight but have your body to the side real quick while you go across the oil and then lay it back towards your side. After you get across it you know what i'm saying like straight up then angle. I just lean it up real quick back down

I feel like the one at around 13:40 where the guy on the red bike got side swiped it would have been easier to hit the brakes hard (albeit progressively) than swerve out of the way there, that car really moved sideways quick.

My most important rule for myself is never ride when the temp is below 35 degrees or has been below freezing i with in the last couple of hours. I have learned over the years that most places on NYC roads, that can have ice will have ice LOL...
It depends on the area I think. In Spokane, which was pretty dry, I never cared too much about the temperature unless it had been raining or snowing, or if it was near a bridge. The main roads stay pretty clear, and there won't be ice unless there was already water. I had the advantage that I was either in a car with snow tires, or my bicycle that's a lot slower so I can see the ice coming, but I didn't have too much issue knowing whether it was likely to have ice on the roads.
I imagine there are areas with a lot of fog and dew that are more likely to have road ice though, since the ambient vapor has to go somewhere when it freezes out of the air. And if it's been below freezing for weeks, it's hard to know if a new corner had water on it between then and now.
I live in AZ too and it always blows my mind about people not in AZ (over seas, other parts of US) doing horn honks, and aggressive gestures. I keep thinking "oh that would get you 👉 in AZ" . It's a little more polite in our state, even if people drive poorly as hell still 😂😂
The wildest part of losing control on ice in any RWD vehicle is seeing your tail end come up next to you. Whether low-siding or fishtailing, those front wheels have no power and turn into bad ice skates. Fuck around with the pedals and you're going backwards into the ditch.

If you're sliding, that's still control if your work a shit in anyway, just keep the same power or add some, steer through, drift out like the hero.
In a spin, your priority is or gain the control you have in a slide, which means arrest the spin into a slide by both feet in, full clutch to kill power, full brake to kill momentum.

At 18:00 You actually see the shadow of a car from the other lane pass, if he had swerved to the left he likely would have went full speed into an oncomming vehicle and likely have been injured even worse, honestly can't think of a better outcome that just hitting the car on the side there
I had a cop do that to me, I was going 5 over on a surface street... only thing I can think is maybe he thought I ran a red light on a protected right turn?
When I was much younger, people told me bike cops are arrogant jackasses. I chalked it up to confirmation bias and treated them like any other cop. Many years later, I have to say it seems to be true. I've seen all kinds of cops do really dumb things, but I've only run across one bike cop without a chip on his shoulder.
I got pulled over once for using the HOV lane to avoid an accident. The bike cop was just non-stop with all the reasons I was breaking the law (none of which were illegal) and I was just amazed that he managed to not see five lanes of traffic stomping on their brakes when some guy crossed almost every lane doing half the speed of traffic. But somehow I was the problem, rather than the oblivious guy on a bike.
Then I had one run two red lights and hit probably 100 mph to give me a ticket for not having a front plate (car didn't come with a plate holder, so the sheriff's office said I didn't need to mount it) and doing 5 over in a 40 zone.
Then the guy in a completely different state telling me my window tint was illegal even though I had a letter from my sheriff's office saying it was fine in the county it was registered in. And he gave me a ticket in the middle of the daytime. While wearing sunglasses. Then told me not to get smart with him when I pointed out his sunglasses. So I told him I wouldn't seem so smart if he wasn't being so dumb. That didn't make him happy, but he never showed up in court when I drove all the way down there to contest it so I guess I got the last laugh.
Then one who drove straight across the road at me (I clearly had right of way), looked for all the world like he was going to low side, then got mad at me for "nearly hitting him" even though I parked in the middle of the road. Then gave me a ticket for "speeding" in a construction zone I was two blocks away from.
Then a guy who claimed I was speeding when I hadn't even hit the speed limit and was literally being passed left and right by other cars. Not only did he write me a ticket for 60 in a 40, he wrote me tickets for no insurance or registration after refusing to let me get out of the car to access my paperwork. I had recently gotten out of the hospital for back and neck surgery and literally couldn't access the glove box from the driver's seat, and I told him that. It was the first time I felt like I could turn my head enough to safely navigate and had enough strength to operate the gear shift lever, and licensing told me I had to drive it to get emissions tested, so they gave me a permission slip to drive it with the slightly-expired registration (it expired while I was in the hospital).
Then a guy who gave me a ticket for doing 2 mph over in a 40 zone. (To be fair, I've had the same thing happen with a cop in a regular car too.)
Then was the one bike cop who pulled me over to let me know they'd recently changed the speed zone because of new businesses, so they were no longer letting us do 80 mph in a 40 zone, and that it was now a 30 zone. Never checked my paperwork, didn't even write a warning, just said to spread the word since they'd start enforcing things when the construction crews got started. So he's a credit to his species.
Anecdotal attempt at a moral is that I think bike cops don't think they need a reason to harass people as long as they can rationalize that you were doing anything at all that was mildly illegal. Because being a bike cop makes them a superior kind of entity to all us mere mortals.
Maybe I've just been unlucky, but I started specifically looking for bike cops who weren't dicks, and I've only run across the one. I've run into non-bike cops who were dicks, but also a lot more who weren't.
Intelligent police officer. He made his point extremely well and then departs to leave the speeder alone with the knowledge and guilt of his/ her own misdemeanour. Make the stop and the perpetrator can slide effortlessly into victim status mode and never take real ownership of his/her sins!😂

I haven't ever ridden a motorcycle before, but I've been driving since I was 14. I see so many bad decisions like at 7:08 that I would think would be common sense. Is it just different being out on the road? Are you so in the moment that you don't think or analyze your surroundings?

Question, My MSF coach is 80 years old and has been riding for 60 years and says he has never dropped a bike or been in a wreck. How did he avoid dropping it with stuff like oil on the roads or black ice? These things we can't control or don't see until its to late so i was wondering how he had these bragging rights and he says he rides all 4 seasons, and never drives cars.
I'd say it's a combination of the ability to control his throttle hand, skill, with equal measures of luck. All it takes is for one person to turn in front of you and it's curtains. That's why I wear high-viz gear.

So I've been riding since I was 19. I'm 27 now, and my initial reaction to road hazards involving other vehicles has never been to honk. In fact I basically treat my bikes like they don't have horns at all. I'm wondering if there are some riding schools out there than train new riders to use their horns as a reaction to hazards, because the way that guy at 14:00 immediately gets on the horn before he pulls his brakes is just weird to me. Is that something that any of you guys use to do or currently do now?

I have leaned my bikes over so far that I never thought I would get away with it !!!! But I have never lost grip, except once on a British Bike years ago with rubbish tyres on a wet road !!!! You can lean a lot further over with good tyres, so why do these stupid riders go straight on and Bolt Upright instead of leaning over and riding around a Corner ????? Don't they know about leaning over ???? They think you are supposed to sit upright and counter steer straight into a hedge !!!!
