They are both amazing SUV's and I like both for different reasons. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

I've had my 1991 YJ for 21 years now & it has 347k miles on it (I got it in 1997 as 2nd owner with 73kmi). My YJ & me are like R2D2 & Luke Skywalker.
SQARE HEADLIGHT GANG
matthew rutledge its hip to be square
I do think that as well
HERE!!!
Wrongler
YJ all the way!
Love both but gotta go with YJ. I daily drive my 95 yj, uncomfortable+bumpy ride, noisy, not exactly watertight in the rain, got 4 squirrels under the hood, always something to fix...Love every second. It's a Jeep thing
Totally hear you...1991 here.
I have 91 and that’s my experience but I love me jeep
95 here. i got a 99 tj but still i like my yj better
95 YJ. Does anybody else have the wiper module that only will go slow speed, even though it's set to intermittent, and then become intermittent, and work properly in all settings after about 5-10 minutes? Not the circuit board, replaced it several times, and replaced caps on one of the boards. That totally f'ed up the operation.
Rey Serna 1988
probably one of the only videos of Car A vs Car B where 95% of people respect both pretty much equally lol
Amen
My dad has been driving his YJ ever since 1993. Runs solid still to this day at 230k miles.
I have a 93 YJ manual, a 95 YJ automatic and a 2012 JK automatic. YJ 93 is the best, by far!
TJ was the best Jeep and the last true Jeep before they evolved into plastic Millennial Mall crawler SUV’s. TJs are Smaller, lighter, less complicated, have a truly modern and functional suspension. Owned TJs, CJs and JKs. Came back to the TJ after owning 2 JKs. Great video. I’m sure the debate will continue.
I think the TJ is in the sweet spot where it just the right amount of technology and modern components, without being unnecessarily over complicated and filled with useless electronics like the jk. If i had to pick any other jeep besides the TJ it would be a YJ.
I agree, the Rubicon tj or the upgraded with rebuilt motor yj
Had three TJs, the Rubicon had the most problems. Rusted out so bad. I had to get rid of it with only 33K miles. It was my DD and hardly off road. Just bubbling rust everywhere. All the TJs rust horribly.
useless electronics? lol...take a look at the JL then!
Ironically, besides all the other issues, my '06's TJ was the one with the faulty electronics. OBDII. Forgot about that. Chrysler sent a statement saying they were faulty, and future warranty since it was ongoing. Then, look up OPDA, issues. A nightmare that can't be correctly fixed, they used cheap metal gears and wears fast.
The right amount of technology comes in the yj
I like the 1995 yj. It was the only Jeep Wrangler year model that had a galvanized frame and body. They hold up well in terms of rust prevention. You can still find them for a reasonable price.
Lol not mine, had to replace side panels and floor pans 🤷♂️. It’ll never rust again though, raptor inside and krown twice a year outside.
Tough choice, since both TJ & YJ have their merits. I found an 05 TJ Rubicon 4.0L and made it my daily driver. With coil springs and 33x12.5 tires being on the road every day, I have to say I Love it! It has just over 183,000 miles and runs like a champ.
YJ.... The original wrangler!
Ken Kuta you mean CJ
cj is a jeep, but it is not a *Wrangler* ....
the cj came first, but there was NO wrangler until the YJ
any jeep 1941-2006 is the best
My is very rugged
Even KJ
Not sure I'd include the Liberty. But that's more lookswise for me I guess than being an outright dog of a vehicle
Andrew Cheatle yeah i’m not too big on the liberty myself. this is refering more towards the 4.0 jeeps
@@noahbones1221
Yea sure gotcha - I've an RHD XJ here in the UK. No complaints with the engine or tranny but had way more than my fair share of electrical & ignition related issues. + A LOT of underbody rust from one too many winters up on the Scottish coast . Nothing too major though. It is a 22 year old vehicle though so I can't expect miracles!
Finally, someone explained the difference. About to buy my first jeep. Needed to know the difference. Explained fast and simple. Thank you.
What did you end up with ?
I have an XJ so I’m not biased. I’d prefer the YJ with the 258 engine. Square is cool, leafs are cooler. If it’s such a problem slap some coils on there.
Even as a kid when the square headlights came out I thought "that's going to go over like a lead balloon", which it did. But i think as time goes on, the YJ is going to go like the Ford Edsel and be a collectable because of the square headlights. Having said that, its round headlights for me and I love my '06 TJ.
The YJ is a great Jeep despite the squares. I'll take any '41 - '06 Jeep over a pos '07 - present heep.
I just want a TJ from the frame down, a YJ interior with a CJ front clip... is that too much to ask for?!
and we shall call it
.3jo
Just link a yj
and a small diesel (1.9l tdi)
Auston Reeves call 1 800-make-a-wish
TCYJ
YJ all the way
dfazzino your right cuz yj are very old school....and they were used in the Jurassic park movies haha
Here in Wyoming the YJ is my favorite. Perfect for Trails perfect for hunting and I could do a u-turn anywhere
Yes u turns are very small
Coming from
A 15 Chevy diesel crew cab this thing feels like a golf cart
TJ all the way! But I'm a bit bias because I own one. Lol.
5 speed yj, it's like an amusement park ride, so much fun to drive, love the square headlights, different is good!!!
Rectangle headlights.
@@Photojeeper uhh ohh, the geometric police are out today!
I've owned CJs, YJs, & TJ.....I love CJs and I like YJs & TJs. Oddly, I think I like the YJ because it's so much like the CJ.
If you look into it, the YJ is just a CJ but modified in certain areas.
I had a cj7 sold it and got a yj. It's the closest you can get to a CJ.
Flat fendered late 40's, then CJ5, then TJ. Always loved the old school, but I'm loving the TJ more and more due to it's driveability; stiffness in the frame and more suspension travel beats the old flexible frame and limited suspension travel both on road and crawling up rocks and walls. Safer too.
This "comparison" is great; but YJ will be much cheaper and the after market Mods are still plentiful. At some point, there will be less and less and less YJs just due to age. My 95 YJ is in good shape; and plenty of mods; so I love it. However, hard to complain or compare to the more modern suspension of the TJ. YJ gets my "vote" for nostalgia, hands down. (love the square lights and old school interior dash!!!!!).
Saint James i agree 100%. actually looking at a 95 with 190k. which is nothing for these i6 motors!
Since you mentioned the 'Dash'. That's one of the biggest surprises when you look at the later Jeeps. That 'CAR' look is just "Not Jeep". That's one thing that gives the older ones way more appeal.
I have owned 2 TJ and 1 YJ, liked all but like the TJ best, cheers
For the TJ they had to put in a full more modern dash because by law it needed a front driver & passenger airbag
TJ is my favorite. I own a TJ and one of my friends owned a YJ and I definitely like the TJ a lot better after riding in both of them
My favorite Jeep is the TJ hands down. I just think it looks the best and has the perfect balance of manual components (like how you actually move the butterfly on the intake manifold with a cable instead of a computer doing it) and the computer components like the electronic windows. But if there were no TJs, then the YJ and the XJ are both tied for second place as a Jeep I would choose.
I owned 1993 YJ 3 months ago and it's really fun to drive
I love it 😍
buying a TJ this year! 😎
YJ just bought a 1994 in September last year, and I love it. My first Jeep ever.
how is it holding up, looking at a 94' now
Great video. I just purchased a '99 TJ Sport. My first ever Jeep. My first ever 4x4. I love, love, love the way it looks. Gold. Really a nice vehicle.
I have owned both. My first Jeep was a 1999 TJ 4.0 and then I "upgraded" to a 1995 YJ 4.0 withonly 60,000 original miles and from Texas so no rust; I also have a 1995 YJ with a Chevy V8. I am almost 50 years old and I really liked the interior look and feel of the YJ over the TJ because it reminded me of the cars that came out when I was a kid (graduated high school in 1987 and college in 1992). The YJ, simply put, has a more vintage feel and look which I prefer.
How difficult was it putting the V8 in? You do it yourself?
How difficult was it putting the V8 in? You do it yourself?
@@jaco5187 It is fairly simple but it all depends how far you want to take it. Just remember it only takes 3 wires to start and run most engines, everything else is integral to the engine. "make the engine think it is running in its original GM chassis. A simplistic but fair summary would state that a 1955 Chevy 283 and a 2004 LS1 have the same basic wiring requirements; power to the starter when it is required, power to the distributor (or coils) when needed. The battery needs power from the alternator to keep it charged." - Novak Conversions
Novak Conversions is a great resource
www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/engines/swap-guides/chevy-buick-gm/yj-87-95-swap
I swapped a 2.5 4 cylinder out of my 1995 YJ for a TBI 350/700r4/NP241C...I also may have gone a little crazy and swapped in 1 ton axles from an F250 and put 38s on...
Vintage look? It's got 80s square headlights...... The TJ is peak jeep.... The E46 M3 of wranglers............
Well had CJ. YJ TJ and JK. Right now i still have my TJ and JKU Rubicon. The one i like for playing with is still my TJ that 4.0 will always be the best off-road engine in my book. Although my CJ5 with a 360 AMC V8 gets my nostalgia vote
I drove an 89 yj in high school and now have a 99 tj. I loved how everything was very rugged in the yg. Spill shit and it just leaks out the drain holes on the floor, get the interior soaked from the rain, don't wash it for months and it's just as awesome. The tj is a little more modern but you can't beat the yj feel.
Never owned a YJ, but would like to!! Have had two TJ's. A 2004 and now I currently own a 2006, both with the 4.0! I went with the 06 due to it being the last year of what I consider to be a true Jeep! The JK's and now current JL's don't interest me one bit! Too many electronics and amenities on a vehicle designed to be simple and fun! I'll take a CJ, YJ, or TJ! After that, you can have it!
Gotta 2000 TJ garaged kept with a frame still in fantastic condition. Drives like a dream with 32in tires without any rise. Its a sweet ride.
I have a 02 TJ I love it needs a little work but when its fully done and has all the new things on it oh its going to be beast
TJ all the way. My dad has a 1998 Jeep Wrangler SE (Yes. The 4 cylinder one) It has around 150 horsepower now, 33 inch tires, and is super cool looking with matte black.
It’s the TJ life for me! I found & bought back my same TJ because he’s the best ever!
YJ I own a 95 you do hear every little bump in the road but I like how rugged it is it has the feel of a CJ
Had a YJ and a TJ... Loved both but the YJ and the leaf springs were tough in the woods !!!!
The yj looks very military and serious grill atitude i go with the yj
jaime velazquez plus you can turn it into the Jurassic Park Jeep
Yeah, it does look more aggressive.
Great video, have a 05 TJ Rubi that i will drive till it dies..have had a cj5 cj7 and now my tj...love them all and will always appreciate each owners view...there is something special about the freedom and ability to travel where many vehicles can not dream of...guess thats why it all began so long ago and is still very loved today...simple, versatile and dependable with the freedom to go where only few vehicles can go...jeep on and be safe ..enjoy the adventure..
Looks: TJ (but only because it looks more like a CJ).
Performance and purity: YJ.
Performance?? The TJ has the upgraded intake 4.0. Makes better power. TJ has a better 5 speed, and you can get the Dana 44 rear axle on the TJ, not a yj, and the front axle engagement on the TJ is better, no vacuum disconnect. TJ out performes the YJ all day. Plus has better purity with round headlights.
@@rediron44 Right on! 👍👍
Love the TJ
JEEP= GP= General Purpose
"It's a Jeep Wrangler... Just Kidding!" hahahaha I love it, so true
Pen Tuner except my JK performs circles around my tj in every aspect but tight trails...
funny you said wave. When i drive by another YJ I almost can 100% count on a wave back to me. The JK's are usually the same people who almost bought a hummer who dont even realize they are driving a jeep lol
Yes. I already made that joke. Jeep Wrangler......Just Kidding.
I think that is more so a fact, rather than opinion. JK's are garbage and I would never EVER own one.
All the JK bashing. Personally I love both the TJ and the four door JK. Two different style of vehicles. But I agree that with the JKs you get a lot of people that don’t really connect with the heart of what a Jeep is. A Jeep is like a part of the family. It’s about half and half with another JK waving. But at the same time the big lifted TJs will snub you as well because you are a so called “mall crawler” even though I haven’t been to the mall since I was sixteen but because I drive a four door JK that doesn’t look like it just crawled out of a mud pit I am automatically labeled. Lots of opposing forces within the Jeep community but in the end it’s all just a Jeep thing I guess.
I want a YJ with a TJ suspension lol
I want a CJ-7 Laredo with a TJ suspension.
Great intro video! I am doing my Jeep research now and still decoding the TJ/YJ/JK etc jargon. I like both CJ’s utilitarian component but then again the TJ round headlights and smoother ride are compelling.
My 1999 Cherokee Xj has 330,000 miles and is just like new.4.0 AW4 BEAST!!!
Hi Ry great video. I had a CJ now own a TJ love it!
I just purchased a 1998 TJ a couple of months ago but, I would love to have a YJ Jurassic Park.
I am almost finished with my Jurassic Park. Paint job is done already
Good video. I owned two YJ's prior to my current TJ. Both are solid options for a good offroad rig.
Scott
Yes they are ive owned both and there awesome. The tj was the first vehicle to ever survive a grand tour top gear special without breaking.
YJ all day long!!!! Love it.
I have a 1999 jeep wy TJ ...4.0LTR.....5spd ... love it!!!!
Just got a 99 TJ for my 16th birthday, and i love everything about it so far, so im gonna have to go with the TJ.
Tyler Strand-Fox no way😂 couple months ago i got a blacked out 97 tj for my 16th birthday (happy birthday btw)
Have fun feeding it
2003 2.4l, had to buy mine for my birthday...
Glad I stumbled over this. I need a hard top for my 2005 TJ. Will any year from 1996 to 2006 fit? Anything I should be leary of when purchasing a used hard top?
I recently bought an 87 YJ. The thing drives like a haywagon so I know that I need to do some steering work! Should be a fun toy/project tho!
HI I went with the 95 white YJ and yes l love it, sure the TJ has updated/better interior, but I like utilitarian look and feel, besides I can always get suspension upgrade . Oh, and lights as long as they work can be either shape...
Mine is a 1991 YJ, 2.5L, hard top with half doors. I enjoy driving it, though I agree it is a wee bit rough riding.
I have a 98 tj but got to say the yj has no problem going where I go..so I like them both and fixing to own both. Great video
AFTER 46 YEARS … I’m finally a Jeep guy. Just bought a great 93YJ off a guy and I am in love.
Yes! Aren't they amazing? 💪🏻💪🏻
1st vehicle was yj and loved it, and 3rd (current vehicle) tj and love it!
If your truly going to wheel your Jeep,
the YJ's have less computer nannies to deal with.
Antilock breaks, air bags, speed controlled automatics.
And you can get them to articulate pretty good with the
right suspension setup.
My 95 has the best of both worlds with fuel injection.
It’s hard to pick for me because I have a tj and my dad has a yj we ride everywhere together
Just bought a 94 yj and I’m about to rebuild it from the frame up.
how did the rebuild go?
@@NickSiekierski still going. I got handed a few other projects and a brother needed his basement renovated because he is expecting his first son =]
very well said and put together. explains everything perfectly. thanks!
Love my 97 TJ!
I like YJ. I like the headlights and interior
I owned a 46 many years back, and Own a 05 TJ now. For those YJ guys, while in that 46 “Hold my Beer”. I’ll take my TJ any day of the week. The truth is, I’ll take any Jeep any time.
"I'll take any Jeep any time" amen to that!
I prefer LJ because of the longer wheel base however using your comparison the TJ mainly because of the coil springs at 4 corners...don’t know why Jeep went with square headlights for the YJ but I kinda like ‘em but if I’m gonna have leaf springs I’d prefer the CJ it’s more closely related to the original Bantam/Willy’s style....that said any wrangler Jeep beats all comers in the 4x4 market because of its iconic looks....often imitated never duplicated.
I own the TJ, love it - It took getting use to (coming from a Lexus NX) - Thinking of getting another Wrangler, perhaps a Rubicon - Question: my TJ is the unlimited 2004 - I have a hard top but looking to purchase a soft top; not sure the best place to go for that, any suggestions? thanks
Would agree, but I also love the cartoonishly look of the CJ-7 front grill and headlights.....and they had V8s
The YJ. I remember when they came out and had the square headlights and all the jeep fans hated it, but then almost all vehicles had square headlights back then. Still a great jeep.
89 YJ, just picked up a little over a year ago to have as a backup and a fun rider and I've had a lot of fun with it.
🤘🏻
TJ ALL DAY!
YJ fan here :-)😀. Good video man!!!
Just bought a 1995 yj Rio grande edition yesterday. Has the 2.5 liter in it with a hard top!
Love the info in this video!! 👍
Thanks!!
New sub!!
Woop woop!
I got a 1989 Wrangler YJ. The best jeep going in my opinion. Inline 6cyl 5 spd with power to spare.
I like CJ, YJ, and TJ all differently and equally. Have owned at least 25
I owned a 1987 and 1991 YJ. Loved both of them. I’ve driven a TJ and now own a JK. My favorites were my old YJ’s. They look more Jeep and the seats were actually the most comfortable of all. Now that’s my opinion.
They look more jeep? With square head lights?
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo they shared many parts from the CJ-7. And had same body dimensions. Tops and doors were interchangeable. Heck even the keys in my 1987 had AMC emblem.
Have a 2006 TJ 4.0 manual tran. Nice Jeep. Lots of upgrades love it
Good choice!
Well i like them both i have a1991 YJ
I have a 1989 YJ 200.000 miles on 6 cylinder I couldn't tell you how many times I've either towed home or drove to auto parts store to fix some other vehicle I owed. I am selling it now though hope some young kid buys it and fixs it up with the cool after market parts they have today.
Yj, love mine
YJ all day....and when the suspension is done properly can flex just as good as coils.
Says the one with a pic of a JK
LOL. Keep dreaming
SOA, no sway bars or track bars flexes really good
Great, to the bbn point vid. Just picked up a new subscriber.
Hi
You seem to know your stuff on the Jeeps ! is there a difference in the hardtops from YJ to TJ Models
I got a YJ without a hard top an know of a cheap one from a TJ
Great video! Oh, I love both...
Me too, just in different ways. :D I miss my jeeps.
Great video.
Thanks!
A month ago, I bought a lifted 95 YJ on 33" tires and I've been having a lot of fun driving it. Can't wait for the snow to melt so I can do some actual offroading (unfortunately that won't be until mid May where I am).
Where are you from?
@@Rythecarguy Central British Columbia. I do a lot of hiking and climbing and bought the jeep to get me nearer to some of the mountains I wouldn't be able to reach otherwise. The logging roads won't be clear for some time (there's still over two feet of snow in town, and a lot more in the hills).
Tj 2006 jeep wrangle love it
Which one has a longer space between front fender and windshield?
I've got a 92 YJ with a 4 inch Rubicon lift, 8.8 with disc brakes all around. Slip yoke elimator, boomerang shackles, Rubicon shocks, an air Ox Locker, with onboard air, put on the spare tire holder. I'll just say this, I'll put my jeep up against any TJ, even though I like the TJ's once I put on the Rubicon kit and all the other stuff plus it's got the inline 6 I can say with a lot of confidence that my YJ will stand up against most any jeep around.
Yj
great video! thanks
I've had my YJ for a little over a year, the in line 6 engine is 27 years old and running swell. It's super loud and bumpy and not the most comfortable, but thats how a jeep is supposed to be
I had a YJ for 7 years and 190k miles. Had about 7 CJ-7's and 3 TJ's. Best all around jeep is definitely the TJ. The cj7 is my favorite body style but, they ride like a wagon & so does the YJ. 2005 Rubicon is the best Jeep ever made.
I feel the same about my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn. By far the best vehicle I've had.
I have a 75 CJ5 so i'm partial to those. But the 2 you reviewed I like the TJ due to the round lights.
AMC.....Phhhh
Suspension just 4 link it with coil overs what I did to my YJ
