  • The iRig Keys I|O 49 gives you everything you need in a portable MIDI controller and then some. It provides extensive MIDI Key and Pad controls and adds a high-quality 1-in-2-out audio interface. It is compatible with Windows and Mac OS as well as iOS devices (iPad, iPhone). iRIG Keys IO also has a generous assortment of music applications to get you started on Windows, MAC OS, and iOS).

    *NOTE: I am using my iPad to mirror my computer display. For this video, I am using the Windows version of Sample Tank 4.
    * UPDATE*
    IK Multimedia has released a firmware update along with full native ASIO support. This increases the value and functionality of this handy controller. The updates should be found in your User Area.

    Excellent presentation! I have watched many other videos about this keyboard and yours is, by far, the best. I was wondering what the keyboard action was like and I feel that you did a very good job of describing it. I love that you are a pianist, like myself, and that you talked about the 'playability' of this keyboard instead of focusing on all the gadgets. Thank you so much for making this video.

      Thanks so much for watching and your thoughtful comments. The iRig Keys fits in a nice place between all of the rest that is what I like to say the 49 keys is “just right” for a portable controller and not sacrificing too much.

    Great keyboard and great review. I am looking for a midi keyboard to replace my old QuickShot MidiComposer. This has only an 'old school' midi-OUT, so I need to use my iControl Garageband controller, also to be able to connect it with my iPad. I want to take it with my on our holidays in our small RV, so maybe the 25 keys version is better for me. I'm not a very good keyboard player. I had some classical organ lessons long ago, I learned to use both hands (and both feet, bass and volume). But a 49 key is maybe a bit to big to take with us.

      I think the 49 hits a sweet spot for portability. I will try and post a pic comparing it to some of the other keyboards I have for comparison. MIDI is standard and should work just fine with Android too, given that you install a synthesizer software on Android, such as FluidSynth, and you employ an adapter cable such as USB-A to USB-C or maybe USB-A to mini USB-A cable, in case of old mobile phones.

      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 3 lety

      So I am not sure, I would have to hook it up and check it out. i did have it connected to the DAW and it was amazing how well it performed. ASIO4ALL basically wraps the Windows Driver and disguises it as an ASIO driver to sort of trick the audio application. Sneaky huh????

    I started with the irig keys pro 37 key version on iOS . I upgraded to an iMac with Logic and an interface, and Nektar impact lx88+ and I absolutely love it. However, I work on the road and my irig keys pro has been my portable keyboard. But without an interface. I have to wait until I get home, weeks later to do vocals. This would be perfect for the road. They don’t still use the usb mini jack to connect do they? Usb mini is a seriously outdated and inferior option for connectivity. My irig keys pro has serious issues with that jack.

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 3 lety

      YEs, the iRig Keys IO is really nice with the built in audio interface. Also the updated ASIO drivers for the IRig products are really great. The latency and such is so much improved. As far as the MIDI connectors they use a custom DIN type of connector instead of the mini jacks and you have several options that are included. My favorite setup is using it with an iPad and iLOUD, it is the perfect portable setup. Load the iPad with SampleTank and Ravenscroft and you have a great portable solution.

    Does it save "transpose" settings as well in the user presets?
    Does it have a split function? :)
    Any drawbar options? :)
    Thanks in advance if you're gonna answer any of all these questions!

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 4 lety +1

      Thanks first off for watching and glad you co to use to enjoy the vids. Yes, every preset stores the complete state the keyboard, pads and controllers are set. This includes transpose, pad settings (which can be midi notes or MIDI CCs). Also you have virtually 8 separate rotary co trolls that you can assign to control the draw bars (you would only have 8 however). There is not a split function but in theory you could use a program called Bome MIDI Translator to create custom routings and splits; it is a very powerful Swiss Army knife of MIDI.

      Hey Leandro, thanks for watching! A big thing to remember is that the iRig Keys I|O is MIDI controller with a 1 in stereo out audio interface; that means it does not generate any sound on its own but is used with your platform of choice (Pc, Mac, or iPad). The great thing about the iRig Keys I|O is that it is very configurable as far as setting up the keys, pads and other controls to send MIDI messages and such to control your performance setup. You can also store different setups as user presets.

      Well, there is not a way to do Bluetooth audio with this particular controller/interface, you might be able to do it through AirPlay but it is not the best way. The main issue with trying to play an instrument's audio over Bluetooth it latency, it is a huge factor. The time delay between when playing a note and when the sound is sent through the speakers is a lot, enough for it to make a difference in how you play. I use a Y cable to take the two outputs and combine them into a single 3.5 mm plug I can connect to the iLoud and it works great. It also allows you to use the built in headphone jack on the iRig Keys IO.
      I know you will continue to explore and enjoy this wonderful keyboard/interface combination. All the best for the New Year ahead.

      Got it. So it is amazing what can be done with the iRig Keys and a recent iPad/iPad Pro (would be better). There are a lot of great apps included with the iRig Keys IO to get you started. There are also alot of free and paid iPad instruments available; one I like is the Ravenscroft 275 piano, that I have also reviewed the Windows version and it is very nice. What I like about the iRig Keys 49 is the number of keys. I think anything less than 49 and you will start to feel cramped if you are going anywhere to try and duplicate a two handed playing style. The smaller keyboards are fantastic in some situations for sketching out ideas on the road.
      So with the iRig Keys, not having on board sounds you have the opportunity of selecting the libraries and instruments that will sound good to you. You also have to consider outboard speakers, which the iLoud series is incredible for the size and price point.

It is actually a perfect setup for a street keyboard player as the keyboard controller is battery powered, so is the iPad and the iLOUD has a built in rechargeable battery. You can plug into power as well but can also go totally power cord free.

      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 3 lety

      OK, so I just checked this.
      When I have an app (SampleTank) open, I can play the instrument and it sounds as you would expect. The problem is when I launch the camera app then the audio from SampleTank is not captured.
      On the other hand; when I have my mic connected to the iRig Keys, it is captured by the Video/Camera app. So I will do some more research and see how it goes, so in this case the camera app cannot seem to multitask with another app that is sending audio from another application, but it can receive audio coming from the iRig device.
      When you are using the iRig typically the audio coming from the mic input is mixed with the audio coming from the connected app and is sent together to the main iRig outputs.
      I hope that helps?

      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 4 lety

      Well I have used an M-Audio sustain pedal as well as a basic foot switch control and they worked fine with the iRig Keys IO 49. I think you might be running into a polarity issue. I would check the bottom of one of the pedals to see if there is a switch to change the polarity (always on or always off).
      The iRig Keys IO also lets you change the function of the pedal jack so you can use it with a Sustain or a volume pedal so there might be an issue with that setting. Look at page 37 in the manual for more info.
      One other thing to try is to do a factory reset as it will default to Sustain pedal operation. I hope that helps.

      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 4 lety

      First of all, thanks so much for watching. At the outset if you are wanting to learn to play then I would recommend the iRig Key IO 49. The main reason is the number of keys; they just give you that little bit extra to sort of stretch out when you play, If you were just working on melodies and other rudimentary things then one of the smaller keyboards might work just fine and they are always useful for a secondary keyboard.
      Also if you go with the IO49 definitely get the power adapter as it not only powers the keyboard but charges the iPad/iPhone as well.
      IK give you several sound libraries to get you started on both iOS and Windows/Mac platforms.
      I have not played the new iRig Keys but my time with the 49 has been very nice. I hope that this was helpful? Please let me know if you had any other questions?

      Simeon hello was doing the firmware update when it was at 60% it gave an error and did not advance the process and with this it is only lit the led input lost the controller is no longer working as a colto for previous firmware on the ikmultmidia website only has this newer version for mac.

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 4 lety

      JEFERSON MUNHOZ , so sorry you experienced this. I ran the update on my Windows PC 😳
      I would say to power off the keyboard, etc. and possibly try the process again. It seems like there are several hoops you have to jump through to get the update to complete successfully.
      If that fails I would highly suggest submitting a ticket to IK support to see if they have any alternatives to possibly restore the older version or if there is another workaround.
      Firmware is sometimes tricky but hopefully this can be resolved.
      So is the controller working at all when you power it off and try reconnecting it to your DAW.?
      Let me know who things go?

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 3 lety

      You would just need to assign the trigger pads to output on a different MIDI channel (channel 10 for drums in the channel General MIDI spec).
      You can also output MIDI CC, program changes and other MIDI events using the pads. Whatever you set up can also be saved as a user preset so you can have different setups for projects and songs.

    My iRigKeys I/o does not communicate with my iPad Pro. no configuring of cables, USB hubs will get the iPad to recognize this keyboard. You should be able to use this as a midi controller with Garage Band. Anyone else with this issue?

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Pƙed 3 lety

      It might be the position of the switch on the back of the iRig Keys. It sets whether the keyboard is getting power internally or through the USB connection.

      So I just double checked the manual and here is where the rear panel switch should be won using iOS devices:
      - Move the back side switch to the battery position (both if you are using batteries or the external PSU) -

      Yes, and like I mentioned 49 keys in a portable gives you just enough to be able to do things smaller controllers would feel a little tight doing. For something you could take to fun gigs, it is perfect. I used it to play for some small Christmas parties along with the iLoud and it worked great. I used an iPad Pro to play back MIDI files and tracks to play along with.

      What compatibility would you be looking for? When installed on your system it will create MIDI ports and serve as a controller. You can then configure it if you want by customizing the pads and controls. When playing the software instruments, you just select the iRIG KEYS as your MIDI input source and go from there.
