Unfortunately, the iRig Keys i/o 49 falls short in almost every aspect. From proprietary connections, to poor drivers, to an almost unusable audio interface, we cannot recommend this product and suggest you look for a different MIDI controller and a dedicated audio interface.

• Octave, program change and transport
• 5 programmable touch sensitive encoders
These features make the iRig Keys i/o 49 look really promising, and maybe in the future it will be.
Universal connections are an important thing to consider when purchasing any new piece of audio equipment. It is important for all components to connect and work flawlessly together.
One of our biggest concerns about the iRig Key i/o 49 is the proprietary connection between the controller and the computer.
It is impossible to find a replacement cable anywhere that isn’t through IK Multimedia, which is really disappointing. Coupled with the short length of the cable and its seemingly inflated price to purchase a new one, this is a massive turn off for us.
We don’t like buying into tech ecosystems because it can severely limit the capabilities of your home studio.
The other problem we have with this MIDI controller is the built-in audio interface. With only a single channel and no dedicated drivers, it underperforms in almost every aspect and has a large latency delay.
This spells problems and dysfunctionality when it comes time to record, which is unfortunate.
To set the record straight, the IK Multimedia iRig Keys i/o 49 does work flawlessly as a MIDI controller.
We just wish that the features that make us excited for this product worked in the capacity that we need them to, and for that, we cannot recommend this product.

thank you for this, Ive been looking specifically for reviews on the interface..
now I will get a seperate interface and controller
Really good review. IK should pay attention. They could sell many more of these with some simple choices.
I super appreciate the in-depth review, my man. Saved me a huge future headache and upset. Apple still sells this thing on their website as compatible! Hahaha. Thank you!
Happy to help. It's a tricky little beast. Definitely not my favorite piece of gear, in case you couldn't tell, lol.
Holy cow judging by the echo in that room, it must be hard to mix in there!
Just picked up a used version of this keyboard today. Excited to get it a try.
Thank you for a very honest review..
thanks for the review.
saved me from buying it, cheers for that.
btw, I think you might have forgot to put the name of your travel channel in the description (unless I'm blind)
I'm also a huge fan of traveling and I've been to all the countries you mention so will definitely check your other channel
WOW... Saved me from buying this. Appreciate you honest in the review.
Glad I could help. It's not the best buy for a lot of folks, unfortunately. There are those that it could be great for, I guess. But not me, haha. Thanks for watching though!
thankyou very much! i already search for audio interface + keys, i almost buy this one, but when you say its not good about the AI its help me a lot, because i do saxophone cover and i need good AI.
Yeah, the more I've used it, the less impressed I am. Not a very functional device at all. Glad I could help!
Thank you for this very honest review! Agree with all you said. It seems if you need this set of features, you're probably still better off chasing down an old Novation X-Station or Xiosynth (also with built-in audio interface but using a standard USB cable).
Glad it was helpful! Yeah, it's an unfortunate device. Really hope someone like NI or Novation creates a new unit like this, but one that actually, ya know, works well and uses normal cables. Ha
thanks, good video as always. how about some room treatment there ?
Wonderful and very clever!
Thank you so much, I think I will wait for irig keys 2 I/0 whenever that comes out 😂... IK Multimedia I hope you are listening.
1- Get rid of proprietary interface.
2- upgrade the audio interface
3- Need dedicated drivers
I really like the form factor, hope they make some improvements
great video man, which midi do you recommend in 2021?
good review
hi there, did you at least tried the dedicated Windows ASIO driver they have available for some time now ? I guess it is downloadable with no extra charge right ??
I was about to buy the 25 keys version because of it its sheer simplicity and mobile advantages, but your review made me doubtful. Please do share your experiences with the new driver !
Why do you think there are many people praising this thing? So far this is the only video I've seen that says this is not a good product. Very good video!
I have no idea why anyone who's serious about production would praise it, it falls pretty short of the mark. It's a fine controller, but beyond that... not so much.
I have one and absolutely agree with your views.
Is there any value from buying it just as a controller? Considering the software it comes with
I have Irig keys Io 49 doesn't turn on the panel and pads. when connected via USB to mini din cable to Mac it was recognized as input and output and there's color blue lights in the input. But the keys not function no audio. Do you know the root cause of the problem? Thanks I'm hoping for some advice!
Good one thanks. I have the Peavey HD Amp Kit the Alesis iO Dock ll the iRig Pro and the Apogee interfaces. They’re all cool but they all suck. It’s the specific cables they use. None of them have a regular usb to lightning. One already broke can’t get it replaced no longer supported.
I was totally sold on this keyboard until I heard about the propriety cable. Deal breaker alas. Shame because it is the perfect size and it looks so nice.
Yeah... it's a serious issue. Not only is it proprietary, it's less than 2 feet long. Seriously bad design.
Can you please help me know the input and output of the power supply adapter of this device? i bought this device around 2 years ago and I’ve been using batteries since then, I couldn’t find it’s original power supply adapter where i live and I paid a lot for batteries. Thank you for the review, I don’t find this device useful either for many reasons and the power supply is definitely on the top of the list.
Does it have sustain pedal port?? I didn't see any
Now they have iRig ASIO Driver for Windows, as I know.
About mini DIN cable in first seconds I even cant understand about what you talked - I was sure that it should to have USB output, unbelievable that it doesnt(( And no standart MIDI ports too
So what is a good keyboard to make drum beats and samples ?
Great, very informative review! Did I hear you correctly? All the power needed to run the keyboard and the mic preamp can be handled JUST by the USB power from your laptop? No powered hub or extra AC adapter needed?
* I think IK finally wrote/licensed a legitimate low-latency ASIO driver for Windows to replace the garbage ASIO 4 ALL driver a little after this review in 2020. Did you ever try it?
Bummer about the volume knob…bad move on IK’s part. Volume knob should always be dedicated. There’s too much of a chance for catastrophe otherwise.
How many volts has the power supply for the IRig Keystone 49.
whats the measurements on the keyboard? I need to fit it under my desk.
I can't find the Download the iRig Keys I/O Control Surface Plugin for
(Logic pro x - 10.4 or 10.5). and also it don't work with Mac OS 10.9.5
Yeah - the more I use this thing, the more I don't like it. Very poor design on IK's part.
@@consordini6258 Wow dude I’ve got the same traveler bass in sunburst..Back of the neck feels cheap but otherwise I really like it
Does the iRig USB ASIO driver not work with this?
I was so hyped up about this keyboard, but with all this issues going on i am not sure if it's worth 3 minimum wages. Yep, in Brazil it costs about 3 minimm wages to get a keyboard like this.
Can you use iRig Keys I/O 49 on Windows?
He never actually played the keyboard in this video. It’s all talk, talk and talk. To be avoided.
Nice review! What's the name of your other CZcams channel?
The Nomadic Bard link is not working 404 Not Found :-(
Broooo you got too talk k about that laptop I was super interested in it for Studio One
I reviewed it here on the channel. Check it out!
So, no anu alternatives for that short cable?
Nope! Besides a USB extender, which apparently has varying degrees of success. One of my many gripes with the product. I'm glad they finally came out with actual drivers for it, but I won't be testing them - I ditched this unit as soon as I got back to the States.
Over all... it seems to be an overpriced crap... Thank you for your vid. It stops me just in time from buying this thing.
Well i wish i saw this before i bought it
Hi. Thanks for your review. I own an irig Keys I/O 49, and I am having an issue with the headphones output. If I turn the volume up into the max, I get the level of volume that I need, but I get distorted audio, with a pair of headphones that have (Impedance - 24 ohm).. If I connect the headphones into my computer cheap card I get the high volume that I need without distorted audio... I know the Irig headphone output is 100mW / 50 ohms, so it should work...
Does anyone experience this strange distorted / clipping through headphones? Please help... Thanks
Yes, I use an iRig Pro I/O as my main interface. It's great, but this proprietary connector is the only really bad thing about it. It should be replaced by USB-C.
Does anyone know how the audio interface works with iphone/ipad>? I am looking to pick one of these up
I've heard bad things, that it's not really compatible at all despite what they say. I've never used it with an iPad but it barely works at all with a laptop, so I'd have pretty low expectations. I would recommend a different unit.
It does. It just sucks. No direct monitoring. And the it disconnects from the iPad when you switch apps. You’d have to cut it off and on again. Not good for recording. Great just for mobile production minus vocaling.
work great with an iPad
Shazamm the iPad Producer how do you handle latency when recording into auria pro?
He doesn't like it. Thing is, the Audio interface is just an IK Irig, which are great and they DO have ASIO windows drivers, although you could ASIO4ALL, like almost everyone knows, except of course YT......(whatever). The Mini-din isn't proprietary, and can be gotten anywhere, although that's not widely known. No defense of iK as they are a little strange. The lack of ASIO drivers has been a huge point of contention. That's no longer the case. People hate some of iK's practices, but they make innovative, great stuff. Innovative for years and years.
Man. I am having issues with the latency, too! My vocals are being recorded a quarter of. Second too late!
Nice review, but Im sure by now you know dat that keyboard was meant to be used with iPhone/iPad thats
why they built in and audio interface, I use the old iRig 37 keys and it works fine with my iPhone X, iPad Air n Mac
the iRig keys 37 gives you (8pin midi din) and a usb micro output, they could brought that same setup in the iRig KEYS i/o and
maybe instead of micro usb, put in a usb type B/or C
This unit is supposed to be compatible with everything, that's how they advertise it on the box and on their site. Why else would they include a standard USB cable in the box? I'm glad you've had a good experience, but several other reviews and comments about using it with iPad report the same serious issues I've experienced.
9:20 I totally agree the DEVICE connector will be hard to replace if lost. for so much money bad idea and why not midi out port for other midi device.
Exactly... simple stuff! They could seriously improve this thing and make it great with just a few basic tweaks.
So what would be the best alternative controller in place of IK Multimedia iRig Keys i/o 49? Let's say you needed to put together a track like "CRYSTALLIZE" by Lindsey Stirling but still want to use the IKMULTIMEDIA software products.
Stay Healthy!!
@@consordini6258 , Thank you for the follow up. I really appreciate the time and information you provide us. I actually ended up pulling the trigger on a
Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S61 Smart Keyboard Controller before your response. We'll see. Hopefully I don't regret the investment. Stay healthy and safe!
I really enjoyed singing from Ez Voice because I love singing and it's really working fine and I will continue to be a female singer because I love singing.
And It really works for me From Ez Voice and I love singing.
I use a midi module and this is a No No now.pity a built in interface, nice weight ,nice keys ,nice size.nice action.spoilt by no midi.good vid
this product doesnt control garage band nor Logic in latest Mac OS systems. Dont believe what producer says. So if you really need controler for Garage Band compatibille try any other keyboard!!!!
Should be Irigs real life product tester
update - I hear that Ik now has a windows dedicated asio driver - so that part is better. I have not tried it.
I did see that. It's definitely better than nothing, but with all the other issues it's still a hard sell for me.
@@consordini6258 agreed - and your review helped me greatly here ( especially with realizing even a budget separate audio controller will always get me a better bang for the buck and real quality /no headaches for my occasional my mic and guitar use ). And I laughed when you mentioned ASOIforAll cause I have said the same to Apple folks who think hey on Windows thats fine ( no it is not). After this video, I just bought a NI Komplete Kontrol M32 - love it but - the keys are just to small for my fat fingers ( so playing with it for a week to get used to it/Ableton Live then return it - was an old Cubase - Kurweil - Strat guy) then deciding between a NI A49 ( so just the full key 49 version) or the M-audio Oxygen 49 as my budget 'not to big on my desk' mainly do vst work, daw keyboard controller. The Oxygen has a bit of everything but worried it has cheapness and discussed send glitches a bit. Again thanks for your videos - just found you, watched a ton, and subscribed. I am just getting back into this after years - in many ways am an expert in the parallel universe area of computer creativity in AI visual and animation (stuff in museums and gallery and I am a research prof to writing code and papers)- so both attempting to think sophisticated with what I want on one hand as I get back into composing but start from scratch as a noobie to these newer 2020s techniques - well with that your videos get me up to speed quickly in a direct and intellectual strong way, .again thanks. My goal would be to compose music over my AI 3d animations and art installations.
Has anybody tried to use this USB connector into an audio interface. I just want to take the MIDI from the keyboard into a module without having a laptop in between.
Also this keyboard is advertised by ikmedia as compatible with iPad Pro and I assure it is not. I wasted close to $300 on the irig keys 49 plus garbage accessories and it’s useless to me
Yeesh - no good.
Alan Weiss i was buying This just for My ipadpro... if This is Not plug and play on iPad, wich one is??
You just saved me from a bad purchase
Throw it in the garbage then? For Pete’s sake, tons of negatives, I am surprised you bothered to do a review of this product. You said Native, I am going with that.
I mean, it's not so bad I'd just throw it away. It's still a fine MIDI controller and very compact for a 49-key board. It's mainly the interface section that I struggled with.
@@consordini6258 do you know what the best AI + keys in others company? because i really need that.
Bro it was made mainly for the iPad 🤣😂 am I wrong ? Bro you bought a item that wasn’t designed for what you need they give you a stand for a iPad . Maybe I’m wrong here ?
If it's designed for an iPad, why include a USB-A cable? Why market it as compatible with not only iOS, Windows, OSX, and everything else? Why sell it with included VST software that's only able to run in a DAW? Why tell me that it's class-compliant with Windows drivers? iPad compatibility is touted as a perk, not its main purpose. In fact, reading the product description on Sweetwater and Guitar Center, they don't even mention iPad - they mention PC and Mac. So no, it wasn't made strictly for iPad, hence my frustration, lol.
Yea I hate mine haha
Ha! Agreed. A swing and a miss for IK.
3 minutes before he even mentions the midi controller and no playing! What the hell kind of review is this.
