    This was the scene that convinced me Tom was an actor first and an action star next. He struck every note perfectly in this scene as he goes from bewilderment to rage to grief to resolution.

    What's horrific about this scene is when Cruise is on top of the man after he claimed to drown his son. There's no choreographed fighting. No bad ass punches or kicks. He's just screaming, shaking, and pounding on the man like an animal. The camera moves so fast and you can only see what's happening through the reflections of a broken mirror that you can't even tell exactly what he's doing. This is Spielberg trying to accurately recreate what it would be like. Just pure rage, anger, pain, and hate...all of it exploding. It's like if this happened to you and you tried to re-imagine what it was like when you beat the man...this is how your mind would remember it.

    This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Especially after when time runs out and he begins to recite the man’s Miranda rights and as he says the line “anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law” as he says the word law his voice trembles and fades like he’s weak inside like it took every once of power in him to not pull the trigger. It’s a subtle thing but something that Tom cruise nailed in his acting in this scene.

    peak era of spielberg - A.I., Minority Report, WOTW

  • @mcnamaraky
    @mcnamaraky Před 9 měsíci +9

    John actually DID have a Minority Report, it just happened to NOT be created BEFOREHAND, because Agatha was THERE TO SEE IT IN THE PRESENT. She didn't see it in the future because she couldn't, because she was there for it. So, Anderton DID have a Minority Report, and it was CREATED IN AGATHA (as predicted) just as she saw it in REAL TIME, and NOT in future time. She saw an alternate future there, in person, where Crow is the one to cause his own death and NOT Anderton. It's only slightly different, but it's enough to confirm the doubt that has been sowed: that pre-policing IS fallible and shouldn't be used.
    As she said, the other's never saw their future, this is another reason he has a Minority Report that isn't created then, but only when he actually reaches that moment in time. He cannot change his actions prior to that because he hadn't met Crow, but once he did, we see that the outcome WAS different: he DIDN'T kill him as the precogs ORIGINALLY PREDICTED, but instead we see Crow essentially kill himself as Agatha watches. And being the one criminal who KNOWS his future can allow him to maybe, POSSIBLY ALTER IT JUST ENOUGH, and he manages to do that. But as we know already because of the existence of the reports: others could have been innocent too, but Anderton actually has a larger degree of free will because he KNOWS what the future is so he can consciously make an effort to choose differently. If you're unaware of your future, you cannot ever truly plan for it.
    For example: if buying a box of cereal resulted in the deaths of all of your immediate family, that's something you had no control over because you had no idea what the result would be. Your decision was an uninformed one because you had no way of knowing the future consequences. However, if you KNEW BEFOREHAND that the outcome would be their deaths, you could CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSE DIFFERENTLY. Anderton does choose differently. Again the differences are subtle: the precogs are right about a LOT, but it's a significant enough difference that it changes him from an ACTUAL MURDERER into a man who tries to arrest someone before they essentially commit suicide. So, the Minority Report only differed in what appears to be a very subtle way: Anderton CHOOSING NOT TO KILL CROW is the main difference, alongside the slight differences in the physical act of how he gets shot (pulling the gun away). So, his future may only be MARGINALLY DIFFERENT, but this difference is LARGE ENOUGH to state that free will can be real for some (mainly those who know their future), and that Anderton is EXERCISING HIS FREE WILL.
    So, John DID HAVE A MINORITY REPORT. It was just created in REAL TIME by the precog because that's just when she saw it. She couldn't have made the Minority Report earlier because she hadn't seen it earlier. She only saw it AS IT HAPPENED, which is why his Minority Report was created then.
    That is when he exercised his free will and chose a different future for himself.
