The scariest thing about the flood for me will always be two things.
    1. The flood may be capable of infecting physical space itself. This is probably possible through an application of neural physics.
    2. The flood can (sorta)infect you just by you conversing with a grave mind, which is not limited to just AI, as the Ur-Diadact had this happen to him

    • @cristianestrada708
      @cristianestrada708 Před 4 lety +36

The thing is... the flood is the perfect being. The pinnacle of life itself. It has it all, and it preserves everything.
Do you want immortality? Be part of the flood.
Do you want to trascend? Be part of the flood.
Do you want to become part of something bigger? Be part of the flood.
Do you want infinite knowledge? Be part of the flood, as part of the gravemind.
Everything a sentient living could want, the flood can provide. At the cost of individual freedom.
That's the reason every logic can be corrupted.
AI's that protect a living species can be corrupted to think that either they as non biological beings are the only match against the flood (which is eternal) as happened to Cortana, or can be convinced that the flood is the answer to protect all the living species against their inevitable death as it happened to Mendicant Bias.
Biological beings can be convinced to join the "cause" of the flood just offering them one of the multiple "benefits" to be part of the flood, depending on their actual objectives.
At the end, it doesn't matter. The battle against the flood is not against a living being, it is against life itself. Because every living being that stays alive too much time will be corrupted at some point for whatever cause.

I have seen many things like Tyranids/zerg/xenomorphs are just kill the host and take their knowledge and body etc,
The more terrifying things about flood is that it can corrupt your consciousness,
If Jenkins infected body was retrieved and his consciousness was transferred into another 100% healthy non infected body then he would still be infected, the flood isn't limited by anything, forerunners tried to blast stars and making black holes to stop the flood but didn't succeed, most of all, if the flood knows the way of transportation, they can infect it and make it like warp from warhammer, they literally stopped forerunners from time traveling via menachite crystal or known as shards of God's and limited by slower than light speed travel, infecting space time itself is basically a huge feat in sci fi, if flood can do that give them a piece of metal or energy, they can infect that too

I would have to say that the Flood Neurophysics should be top with Flood multi-infection 2nd and cannibalism 3rd. Cannibalism as the TRUE start of a zombie-like infection is more simple minded and a more "human" concept of horror. Next, an infection that can't be cured and has every potential vector (air, contact, and, to an extent, the mind) is also a more human adaptation of horror, just one with only one real (and again human) solution, complete annihilation. These 2 facts of the Flood just ground how horrible the species is to us AND that we're not the apex predator in our galaxy.
That being said, the Flood being infinite and even having the concept of "neurophyisics" is almost eldritch-like. The fact that a parasite can topple an entire species and adapt is this universe's idea of apex life: being able to adapt to ALL situations. The flood being unofficial descendants of the Precursors (a species responsible for seeding most life in the Milky way) has most DEFINATELY secured that title of "apex" due to their adaptability. Now, mix that with their previous knowledge of neurophysics and now they have become omniscient within OUR universe, as they can now bend reality.
However, the infection of other galaxies would be unlikely if you give it some thought. Although corrupted, the Precursors/Flood only wanted a utopian and unified galaxy that THEY seeded in the first place. "To never have our creations rebel against us again" is a big clue that they were focused solely on the Milky way. If they had seeded the Universe then possibly, but seeing as how they barely understood the concept of "neurophysics" they may have been on the verge of expanding to other galaxies before the Forerunner-Precursor war (only speculation). As such, they would have no right to go to other galaxies and infect them. "Well what right does an infection have to obey," this argument isn't entirely voided, but the Flood (if allowed) are exceedingly and exponentially intelligent meaning they may have a small moral compass along with their actions. They were Precursors before Flood, so some mentality may maintain.
Although, who's to say that the Flood now have reserve fleets and populace hidden in deep space like the Reapers in Mass Effect? As a safety protocol it would make sense; without being in range of the Halos AND staying "within" the Galaxy. THAT is what is truly horrifying, the fact that the Flood is omniscient and can bend our galaxy's reality beyond just simple "infection." Worse still is that if an extragalactic species were to arrive in the Milky way and simply stayed out of the way of, The Flood would most likely leave them be (after initial infection of a single of the extragalactic species for interrogation and information). What is worse STILL is if the Flood gets so corrupt it sees itself as the one-all be-all for the universe. It would be able to realize and tackle horrors beyond our galaxy and our imagination. On a less serious note, they can ingrain themselves into a reality which we cannot see, but another entity simply sees as "a new color" beyond our spectrum.
Sorry for heavy read, keep up the good work, signed a Halo nerd.

How do you equate intelligence and morality? These two things are not connected at any level. One can be intelligent without morality. One can be moral without being intelligent. To say that the flood possess morality is simply unfounded. And even if they did, morality is subjective. Sure, you could argue the flood are "moral" because the Graveminds genuinely believe they are helping those they infect. They don't see infection as an ending or as being wrong. But that isn't moral by our standards, nor the standards of those infected.

This is why the Flood is the number 1 of my top 10 most horrifying monsters/species of any media, for 4 reasons:
. Unlike Zombies and the absurd bite infection that's been already disproven by sciencists, the Flood says "screw that shit" and mutate everytime they say so: airborne infection, water virus, bloodstreams and simple touch... To put it simply, they're the perfect plague.
. Despite being based off the Xenomorphs to some extent, the Flood actually beat them because they don't even need hosts to breed. Even the fucking Tyranids (in my opinion) would have a fair fight against them.
. They are intelligent and adaptive to the most hideous extreme imaginable: pretending to be a harmless power boost for livestock only to strike at the worst moment, taking over ENTIRE fleets and using coordinated tactics to attack more targets and cut off any escape route, subverting planetary defenses against their owners, and eliminating the Forerunners by forcing them to use their last resort (the Halos) to destroy everything, including themselves and their own culture.
. They Can't Die. They are everywhere and can attack anytime, have infected other GALAXIES and UNIVERSES, turned entire planets into one of their own, it will always exist even as fucking knowledge in the air, their lore is so disturbing even the creators of the Halo franchise don't know how to make them less creepy, and their story is tragic as hell, so much that even Shakespeare would consider to check it out.
I hope humanity never find creatures like, or worse than the Flood when space travel becomes a reality.

Ah but according to the halo forerunner trilogy the flood only exist to avenge the fallen precursors, and they are only coordinated by the “Prisoner”, when the iso didact managed to trap the original “Prisoner” he basically asked it why it doing this and why they were losing in which it responded with something like “You did not unite for which you are unworthy of the Mantle”. Now to get to another galaxy the flood would have to take thousands of years of non stop slipstream travel as shown by the librarian traveling to a galaxy nearest the Milky Way. Unless the flood use some sort of precursor tech then they will have reached the andromeda galaxy around the events of halo 3 give or take a few thousand years. Now were the domain destroyed the flood would loose there intergalactic communication and begin to collapse. You have to remember that the flood isn’t like the T-virus it has a purpose.
Now if the flood wars are completely ended the flood could later, if they aren’t destroyed by the “Prisoner” could try to grow again and evolve back into that ancient race they were spawned from. In the end this story will have a silver lining, they always do.

So which colonies fell when, which major battles took place, etc.
There’s nothing quite like that on CZcams and no clear timeline of major events from that period on the halo wiki.

Also is there a piece in lore saying the average amount of time it takes for a flood spore to have its host show signs of infection (ie: hours, days, weeks, etc...). I'd really appreciate it if when you get the chance you answer those if you can. Also I really enjoy your youtube series. I've been watching for a long time now, and I like what you're doing. So its not that far away. And given that Path Kethona has been cleansed by a halo of the greater ark, and the flood has never been seen inventing or creating its own technology, i think its very unlikely that the flood has infected any other meaningful galaxies.

At the the height of their power at the end of the Forerunner/Flood war (right before the final firing of the full Halo array, when the forerunners were too overwhelmed to even react), the Flood WERE powerful enough to leave the galaxy and travel to others. They don't NEED to create their own technology, they just absorb everyone elses, and the Gravemind never forgets, and has already consumed countless civilizations.

One of the many things that makes the Flood so disturbing is just how perfectly adapted they are to be able to infect and spread. Even your technology can be subverted. The Flood is honestly my number one most horrifying parasite/disease/infection/eldritch abomination. Especially because they’re both physically/viscerally horrifying and also existentially horrifying. The Beast from the Homeworld series is a close second for me. Also, the horror of the Floods permanent existence is compounded by the fact that, once it has reached the Gravemind stage, it is essentially one massive organism. Not even a hive mind, just a single immortal and timeless consciousness controlling countless bodies.

Alright, so I keep on thinking of ways to counter the flood, or at least certain forms of the flood, and I thought about a way to counter the flood super cell. The idea I have is that the flood super cells act much like a rapid virus, taking over the nervous system and using biomass that the host no longer needs in order to grow, however it is never explained just how exactly the organisms function after for extended periods of time as the combat forms probably have organs and such used for the extra biomass, and they never exactly explain how the flood "starve", so what if it is not about starving the flood of biomass and more of starving them of the items that let any organism live? proteins, vitamins, that sort of stuff which the flood can no longer exactly get without a constant source of food (aka living organisms), so the idea is not on as grand of a scale as the halo rings or just killing people off, but rather attacking these very things inside of the bodies via chemical reactions on a massive scale, as asides from most of the body being made of proteins and such, it is likely that a harmful chemical reaction will cause the flood to rapidly break down as even if the bodies of the floor are left, they will probably be left in such a condition that the only things that will be left is the biomass as the chemical reaction will probably destroy the super cells which require these to even function in the first place, and unlike a war machine or a strategy, the flood wont be able to properly combat this sort of bio weapon as they themselves are completely organic, and if the bio weapon causes a chain reaction between the flood, then it means a planet can be quickly purified without glassing and similar, even spores wont be able to infect without a flood super cell present, so the only problem would be clean up of the biomass, and I am already sure that a bio weapon like this should work as even though we are told that the flood do not actively infect plants and such, we do not see any living plants in flood infected area or any remains of decaying plants, hinting that they are possibly using plants to help feed them.

    • @charchadonto
      @charchadonto Před 5 lety +6

It would work, to some extend. however there are massive problems.
Distribution, you somehow need to get this chemical agent get in contact with the flood, preferably from a safe distance and in large enough quantities to cleanse outbreaks or even an entire planet. *flood anwser* Target supply lines if they reached high enough intelligence, attempt to quickly kill distributors and then convert them later. Wait out a cleanse until the chemicals have stopped working, then reinfect the biomass laying around.
Effectiveness, a chemical that utterly degrades living things essentially. Is highly likely to also degrade any living organism. it won't be discriminate between flood or people. Meaning even if you manage to cleanse a planet, you have effectively killed off the entire planet. Sure the planet would be killed off by the flood anyway but this would restrict the usage of this chemical to mostly areas that are in threat of being overun, aren't important enough or are flood invested already. *flood anwser if coordinated* Attack and infect important areas first.
Longetivity, if the chemical is short working, the flood may not be fully cleansed or capable of reinfecting an area. If long working, it will make many places incapable of supporting life for a long time, at which points you effectively nuked entire planets. it either gives only breathing room or has a neutral result as it is essentially scorching the earth.
A chemical wouldn't work, however. There is something that is capable of infecting and taking over cells.
A virus, as specifically engineered anti flood supercell virus would be able in due time cleanse entire areas of flood infestation. And only flood infestation.
But this runs into issues as well, without hosts, virusses are shortlived. resulting in the possibility of reinfecting the biomass, virusses mutate quikcly and could go from being flood specific towards other living creatures, and if the flood somehow absorb the virus and repurpose it to infect living things, congrats you made the flood even more dangerous.

First off. that new intro is mad sexy.
Second. I recently purchased 17 of the major Halo books and plan on getting caught up on Halo lore but to the experts; How much do we know about the Halo universe outside of the Milky Way galaxy?
This is coming from someone with very light knowledge of the lore but what if the precursors are not entirely gone? What if they or some other entity are using the flood sort of as population control or as thought of before, a test of some sorts, if not for the mantle, then something else. Surely some powerful being outside of the Milky Way would have the capability right?
How much do we know about the Andromeda, LMC, Whirlpool galaxies etc, in the Halo Universe?
Also, The flood are literally the reason for the Halo installations,; Please bring them back in main games 343.

TymesRhymes that is basically what’s happening the flood are devolved precursors and there going to be used to test humanity for the mantle of responsibility
