Did you ever determine what broke the flexplate in the first place? . . Besides the common reasons (that we always hear about). Mine was breaking around the crankshaft bolts due to improper alignment of starter to ring gear. If there's the slightest slant, it will stress the flexplate over time, and will crack around the center. Yet there's no damage to the ring gear, because it will still mesh just fine.
My 97 f150 started doing it 6 months after I put a new motor in it. Thought it was rod bearings found out it wasn't but changed them out anyways. It remained me of a lose flex plater or torque converter being loose not all checked out. I came to the conclusion it was either the flex plate or torque converter. Both can make the noise. So when I drop the transmission I will just replace both at the same time and be done.

1978 cutlass knocks at idle put it in gear no knocking even when u rev the engine in gear still no knocking put it back in park knocking comes back flex wheel ?
Sounds like it could be a bolt on the torque convertor has come loose. If it has then every time it comes to the top of the bell housing it will make contact. The load put on it while in gear may move it just enough to prevent this contact. If that is not it i would suspect a cracked flex plate.
Zach Heffernan there was no visible damage to the starter. It also stops when under a load thats why it stops the clacking twice in the video because i pit it in gear

hows it going man yea i know its a old video haha hey bro my 95 z71 that ive had for 25 yrs now it was making that noise so i just got aroundto replacing it,i took the old one out and there was not a single crack in it dude,so i replaced it,cranked it up sounded fine well then when i put it in gear and was backing it up on this little hill where i park it today it started doing it again,so i got someone to sit inside and put it in gear while foot on the brakes and i crawled under to listen and then it just quit,so i got in it and drove back and fourth up and down the hill putting some stress on it and it hasnt done it again, not sure if it will or not,but while we were hearing it while in drive it just stopped all of a sudden,im super sore and tired from doing this crap do you have any idea why or what it could be,the old one wasnt cracked, was yours,i saw a couple marks up inside the bell housing where it looks like something hit it in two spots but i dont know if that was anything, any help or ideas bro.god im beat,i left my transfer case attached and just slid the trans back enough to get in there to change it.thanks
Couple things come to mind. Could be the starter not properly shimmed to where when the flex plate flexs it contacts the starter. That sounds like the most likely scenario to me. A differential that is low on gear oil could also make a similar sound. If you were going up the hill in reverse those sound like the most likely culprits because reverse is lower geared plus the strain of going up hill. Try to replicate it by putting in reverse, mashing the brakes (to simulate load) then give it gas. See if makes the noise again. If it does then more than likely the starter needs shims

@@alonzo5.040 you should have an inspection port on the bell housing. Best thing to do would be to run a bore scope in that port and take a good look at the flywheel/flexplate. Ive also seen the torque converter bolts come loose and will tap the bellhousing every time they spin around. May check that as well. Easy to do
My f150 97 do the same noise I live in Oregon but I need to drive to California you think I can make that trip could you can help to know it's like 1000 miles
I wouldn't chance it. If the flex plate is cracked there is a chance of it coming apart. I've heard of people getting seriously injured by flex plates exploding under high torque in older vehicles. It can come though the floorboard if it has enough force behind it.
My 86 Monte Carlo SS, does the same shit...thought it was a bearing, but when car warms up it's fine, for the whole day, just on initial startup after sitting in the garage. Replaced flywheel and starter, when left stranded...Now, won't start(after 6 months of use), just that annoying GM "zing". I hope it's the starter, and not because the lazy asshole mechanic didn't torque my new flywheel to spec.
My truck was making same sound every time I start it but only in the beginning not when I drive it, I thought was a piston but I think is same issue, 3 days ago I start it sound was gone but doesn't engage shift any gear, what could it be¡¡
It would be worth looking into the flexplate. If it sheers off just right it may not be connecting to the torque convertor. Pull pff the inspection plate and see if has wiggle. May check to see that the bolts are still connected from the flex plate to the torque convertor too
My flex plate is cracked as well. Only to find out the torque converter is actually stuck to the engine as well. Mechanic is on it, but he said if they can't get it off I have to get a new engine..... They've been trying to get it off for about 4 hrs. Next step is cutting the torque converter like a pie and putting some heat to the center. Please pray for me lol engine is clean as can be too. It's going to suck having to get a new engine when there's nothing wrong with mine..
Some people are saying i should check my flex plate for the noises my truck is having Could you all watch the video i have on my channel and tell me your opinions
Could come on quick or could take time. What is happening is the flex plate is cracking. In this case it was pretty severe crack all the way around the crank bolts. To fix you will have to buy some long bolts to place where the transmission mounts to the engine. 2 or 3 bolts about 6" long should work. Remove all the bolts for the bell house and torque converter. Remove the cross member and drop the drive shaft. I like to use a ratchet strap to help support the transmission. Install the longer bolts carefully and slide back the transmission giving you enough room to reach the crank bolts. Remove and replace the flex plate then re assemble. Be sure to use lock tite on the crank and torque converter bolts
Could a flexplate make this noise only and only after 40 miles an hour from a dead stop to 40 miles an hour there is no noise but after 40 miles an hour there is a noise just like your video 🤔
FamilyMatters2015 well than that's one quiet fly wheel, mine would make a loud clacking sound occasionally and then on prom night my car broke down and we found out the fly wheel is basically in pieces, last I looked at it it was cracked so bad it wasn't even, it had an upper layer and a lower layer from where the crack was

Is it possible to find a cracked flexplate with their scope method? I hope they just missed that part lol. thanks!
Mind was bad enough where is was obvious. You may unbolt the torque converer and slide it back to get a better look
hows it going man yea i know its a old video haha hey bro my 95 z71 that ive had for 25 yrs now it was making that noise so i just got aroundto replacing it,i took the old one out and there was not a single crack in it dude,so i replaced it,cranked it up sounded fine well then when i put it in gear and was backing it up on this little hill where i park it today it started doing it again,so i got someone to sit inside and put it in gear while foot on the brakes and i crawled under to listen and then it just quit,so i got in it and drove back and fourth up and down the hill putting some stress on it and it hasnt done it again, not sure if it will or not,but while we were hearing it while in drive it just stopped all of a sudden,im super sore and tired from doing this crap do you have any idea why or what it could be,the old one wasnt cracked, was yours,i saw a couple marks up inside the bell housing where it looks like something hit it in two spots but i dont know if that was anything, any help or ideas bro.god im beat,i left my transfer case attached and just slid the trans back enough to get in there to change it.thanks
BTW this is my video. I'm just in a separate account rn
@@TheBigstew5508 thanks man yea i saw another video and it was the starter on his truck, come to think of it,its the original starter haha so its oh wow 29 years old haha,i installed the engine in 2006 its a 350 HO with a slight cam,i was thinking about pulling the bottom cover off and looking at the new flex plate to see if there were any wear marks.damn cant believe i did all that work for nothing,oh well thanks man take care
@onewheelup happens to all of us. If it makes you feel better I've seen trucks sell that had a "rod knock" that turned out to be a loose torque convertor bolt hitting the bell housing.
@@TheBigstew5508 yea i know man,you know you have two types of mechanics, one finds the problem and fixes just that, the other throws parts at it until he finds the problems and thats how i feel,i just dont know anyone to ask,i dont have a single friend anymore, you know i did a complete every nut and bolt ls 6.0 with cam and centrifical super charger in my blazer all by myself, geez talk about a lot of work and trial and error but anyways hopefully its just the starter and nothing serious.thanks for helping me out man it means a lot.like i said ive had the truck for 24 yrs now, while under neath i see ii need to power wash then do por 15 cause theres lots of rust.uhhh it never ends.later friend
My Audi A6 makes that sound when I start up and when I slow down
My A3 sounds like this now too.
was that noise going away wjen you put ot in neutral?
it went away when put in gear
+TheBigstew5508 like clutch pushed in and no sound? was it also your bendex gear on starter not adjested right ?
+Iworkupnorth.com it was the flexplate. it was cracked
Nooe that aint it. My starter is getting stuck on and it makes that eeeekkkk sound like it would starting a running car but mine isn't running. I was told the teeth isnt engaging with the starter..help!!!
if its a chevy there notorious for the flywheel cracking
My 2.3 liter mustang makes almost a similar noise. I got to replace the rear seal in it anyhow and have the transmission rebuilt.
Can you hear it at high rpm ? Like super loud
No it goes away under a load. If ut gets louder with rpms then may be abrod knock
FamilyMatters2015 it’s sound exactly like this , rodknock is loud , it sound more like aggressive grinding at high rpm
Easy to do
FamilyMatters2015 thanks man appreciate it
My f150 97 do the same noise I live in Oregon but I need to drive to California you think I can make that trip could you can help to know it's like 1000 miles
What's the cost to fix this usually?
i just priced out a flex plate replace based on hours, my shop says min $700, its a big job, taking the trany lose and moving it backward
Hi question what kin of car is it.?
1993 chevy z71
My truck was making same sound every time I start it but only in the beginning not when I drive it, I thought was a piston but I think is same issue, 3 days ago I start it sound was gone but doesn't engage shift any gear, what could it be¡¡
It would be worth looking into the flexplate. If it sheers off just right it may not be connecting to the torque convertor. Pull pff the inspection plate and see if has wiggle. May check to see that the bolts are still connected from the flex plate to the torque convertor too
What kind of engine is in there
Was just an old 2 bolt main 5.7
I HEAR A ZIP NOISE WHEN I START THE CAR SOMETIMES. ANY IDEA ON WHAT IT COULD BE?
WIZZLESODOPE YALL KNOW probably the starter
Starter
Starter not aligned properly
I have an '87 Ford Tempo , it squeaks & squals really bad have sprayed the flywheel only for the noise to return.. HELP!!!any suggestions???
Frederick Kidd if it is coming from where the flywheel is then it may be the torque converter. Check your transmission fluid for material
FamilyMatters2015 nothing in trans fluid
Probably the torque converter
Too close. Drive gear remains engaged.
Mines nit doing that. My ford taurus is chirping from the transmission area any thoughts anyone??
My flex plate is cracked as well. Only to find out the torque converter is actually stuck to the engine as well. Mechanic is on it, but he said if they can't get it off I have to get a new engine..... They've been trying to get it off for about 4 hrs. Next step is cutting the torque converter like a pie and putting some heat to the center. Please pray for me lol engine is clean as can be too. It's going to suck having to get a new engine when there's nothing wrong with mine..
Suh Dude good luck bud. Put a little heat on it and have at it.
FamilyMatters2015 thanks man
Suh Dude what happened??? Results?
Shoot, I’d find a way to get it off.. even if I had to pull the whole thing engine and all and use a blowtorch and a friggin jack hammer! Lol
manual or automatic transmission?
Automatic.
the turbine bolt are lossing
Some people are saying i should check my flex plate for the noises my truck is having Could you all watch the video i have on my channel and tell me your opinions
How to make Minatory
When this happens, does it come on all of a sudden or does it get worse and worse? Is it hard to fix? Thanks!
You could also drop the transmission but I prefer the long bolt method
@@TheBigstew5508 awesome! Thanks much!!
Could a flexplate make this noise only and only after 40 miles an hour from a dead stop to 40 miles an hour there is no noise but after 40 miles an hour there is a noise just like your video 🤔
That's just how minds sounded but I get it fix
Jay Stewart how did u fix it?
Jay Stewart was it the flywheel
Fly wheel sounds fine, and I would know
USMC FT BLASTER it shure didnt look fine when it was pulled. Was almost in 2 pieces. Cracked all the way around where it bolts to the crank
FamilyMatters2015 well than that's one quiet fly wheel, mine would make a loud clacking sound occasionally and then on prom night my car broke down and we found out the fly wheel is basically in pieces, last I looked at it it was cracked so bad it wasn't even, it had an upper layer and a lower layer from where the crack was
USMC FT BLASTER yea mine was in a couple pieces
Think u need some more keys
I think we all have the problem of too many keys
What is the less metallic .. wub wub wub noise ?
iamyourfuture808 its the exhaust. its coming straight out of the manifold
Hi I have a 2004 mercury mountaineer I don't know if it's my flywheel or my transmission but when I put it in gear it makes a grinding noise can anyone help me with this
The Cute Kitty Cat is it a standard or automatic?
