Torque Converter Bolt Noise - 1998 Chevy k1500 (4L60-E)

  • In this video you can clearly hear the sound that seems to be caused by a bolt bouncing around inside the bell housing. It was not a bolt. In short terms, CHECK YOUR STARTER. After multiple hours of trying to figure out the problem and pulling stuff apart. We learned that the starter would not hold the drive pinion back causing it to bounce off the flywheel. This is why the noise was more noticeable while on an incline. Hope this information and video helps!

I would check the starter first! I spent so much time to get to the flex plate and it ended up being the starter that was tapping on the flex plate. This went on for like 6 months! Before you tear things apart I would recommend putting the front of the truck in the air (the noise will be more frequent) and then try putting the back of the truck in the air (the noise will be gone). This will help you figure out if it is the starter because when the front of the truck was up the starter gear wanted to fall back and tap on the flex plate making it sound like it was the bolt. This came to me because every time I would go to a friend's house with a steep driveway it would tick more frequently. But it wouldn't tick when I was parked on my level driveway. I would give this a try if I were you and you have this problem! :)

That was the EXACT noise my 2005 Suburban was making. I put mine on car ramps and it did make the noise more noticeable. I then backed the vehicle onto a small steep hill. THE NOISE STOPPED. I pulled off of the hill, it started making the noise again. Backed onto the hill again, no noise. I REPLACED THE STARTER AS SUGGESTED, AND THE NOISE IS GONE. The only thing I can figure is that when the armature is energized it kicks out the starter drive to start the vehicle. But the internal spring that draws it back had weakened. REPLACE THAT STARTER. THANK YOU Cole for the suggestion in the fist place

I got lucky went to 7 shops muffler , basic , transmission etc. Well finally stopped at a little shop I hadn't noticed sitting back off the Rd . The looked at it and it is the starter . It isn't engaging properly. Fixing it tomorrow . Think I will do a video as this has me so stressed and finding the problems saved me a few thousand . I was going to start with the catalytic converter as that was 5 shops diagnosis . $656 just for the direct fit setup . That I could do my self so no labor. The others all said flex plate / flywheel . I wasn't feeling confident that I could do that job and they were all saying about $1000 for the shop to fix . Starter is $326 and I can do . thanks cole for actually telling us what the problem was because people will post videos on what is this and then never say what fixed it ... but i do have a question for all the 88-94 gm truck owners, has anyone experienced a sputter that will shut the motor off everytime you give it gas but when you let off the motor comes back on ... but it only does it sometimes
and it came up for a code that was tps sensor and i replaced it now it does it do it as much but it will still do it ... i do have motor work done but nothing too extreme just alittle here and there to get better perfomance but not enough to mess with the computer

Hi. I've got a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, 164,000 miles, 3.3L V6, 5 speed automatic transmission. When it's first started it knocks or rattles for 3 seconds. Then it stops. Once warm it will only do the startup rattle about 50% of the time. Exact same noise returns from about 1,800 to 3,200 RPM and then stops. If I'm going up a hill it won't do it 50% of the time unless I press the gas pedal and cause RPMs to sharply raise.
The noise increases with RPMs increasing.
The main bearings and rod bearings were changed. Looked good. No rod or crank shaft slop was noted.
Oil/filter is new and full. Same with transmission fluid.
I've narrowed it down to 4 things based on its part time occurrence:
    1. Flex plate?
    2. Timing belt tensioner failing (unknown when last changed)?
    3. Torque converter?
    4. Hydraulic lifters?
I have two short videos I recorded it and can share. Thanks!

Had the same noise on my 2000 Tahoe Z71 and it was not the torque converter. Its the starter teeth randomly hitting the fly wheel. Changed the starter and all gone. I initially thought it was the torque converter bolts or the stater shaft/clutch in the torque converter. After inspecting the starter it was still difficult to determine if the additional play in the starter teeth would cause this. I swapped with a known good starter from my suburban and random clanking was gone. It sounded exactly as this video, like a couple of rocks bouncing around.

I have a 96 Tahoe 4wd and it just started making the same noise sounds like loose bolts on torque converter. I just checked them best I could because in order to take inspection plate off I have to remove exhaust and I don't have that nice little access hole like yours. mine does it at idle and when I accelerate but not when coasting or at steady speed. did yours do similar. its funny that you said its the starter because mine wouldn't start or even click and i would wiggle the wires and nothing is loose but then it would start. now it starts no problem and this noise started. i watched the sprocket on the starter and it don't seem to be tapping on the flex plate. the noise seems to be coming from the area. im down to cracked flex plate or starter. it sounds like someone randomly tapping on metal with a wrench. can you please give me some feedback on how you figured out it was the spring in the starter. did you rebuild it or buy a new one. any info would be greatly appreciated.
