I’d have stayed until they made me leave until I had a garbage commander. Bad commander can make a 1SG’s life a living hell and I never wanted to chance that again. Retirement is official next month.
You have to approach everything with an open mind even if dozens of others have tested the theory, you have to test it because you dont know everything they did or didnt do in their tests. I have found that people see things and think things differently. Doesnt make them right or wrong, just a different approach. Many times someone will say or do something that triggers something in you that you piggyback off of that idea and incorporate it into your ideas to come up with a solution. A prime example of that is my comment on your TX22 short video about the fix for feeding problems to where they shoot any and all ammo. I for sure am going to try this my next time out. Cold bore shift sucks.

Went out today with the Rem.597 today. I forgot about the advice given in the previous video. Sure enough, first shot after cooling was a 3" flyer. After that it all came together and we got an 1 1/2" goup at 100 yards. Gonna learn to use the straw technique and will probably use it in a video soon. I have suggested the technique to other channels with your channel name!❤❤❤

I have arrived at the same conclusion that rimfire is anything but consistent. So many variables. The ambient temperature difference between your Eley testing and this one probably made a difference too. But the mind blowing part of both part one and part two is the straw! Who would have thought? I have regretted not staying in the reserves after my RA enlistment many moons ago. But other things got in the road and I didn't. Glad you are doing it. Thanks for your service and good decision.
Good content Josh, since I started shooting a RimX with Lapua/SK ammo I haven’t noticed the cold bore shift as much but when I was shooting the Bergara B14r I noticed more cold bore shifts using Ely and Geco which both have the waxy lubricant especially in colder weather. It is so refreshing to see tests like this that are comprehensive and conducted carefully enough to produce meaningful results. I’ve long wondered about the cold bore shift question, and although I’ve about decided that it’s not something I experience with centerfire rifles, there are too many reports about it from 22 rimfire shooters to ignore. I tried this by plugging the barrel with a (clean) ear foamy and an ECI on my CZ PV. I can say it certainly seemed to work. Will test it on my CZ MTR next time I have it out using the straw method.
The benchrest competitions is shoot in have sighter targets and therefore, cold bore shift is taken care of by putting one round into the sighter and then checking POI. I have been using SK Rifle Match and there seems to be little cold bore shift and my rifle likes it. The only problem is it is hard to find here in Australia.
Very interesting herr Einstein … yahh! I suspect there is an engineer somewhere that already knows what is going on here ! It may be that oat & relative humidity also plays a part … if that is the case then barometric pressure does as well
Thanks for sharing Josh. I have a couple things to bring up. I believe the rifle you were shooting in this video had a custom barrel and your gunsmith would have checked for tight spots in the barrel, so in your case, I think it has more to do with what you were addressing in your 1st video causing the increase in FPS on the 1st shot. If a barrel has not been checked for tight spots it would be a good spot to start.
Good stuff Josh … I would still like to see your bedding jobs and technique on your CZ rifles. Like free floating the barrel . Getting rid of the barrel pad in the manners stock
Josh what we have been doing between firing is leaving the empty spent case in. I know you can’t do this in prs matches but on bench rest matches we have I don’t know if it works are thought is it keeps the moisture out. Might be blowing smoke?????
If this works out and more and more people start blowing in the barrel, pretty soon they will start putting nipples right on top of the receiver, so you'll have a place to attach a hose.
Nice but one comment, at 46°, the humidity in the barrel might not be evaporating near as quickly as at 60°. But overall very interesting test. Would have been fun to see the poi shift before and after, especially at 100 yards. Always like your content. (Ha! Even gave you a Grundy vote 😊)
Have you tried out the Hoz and Shield Cold Bore Cap? Seems like a nice durable alternative to the finger condoms. I know you say you were done with the series but it would be cool to see you shoot groups for cold bore shift with all of your precision 22s. If you start with one gun the 30 minute wait might be up by the time you shoot a group with your last one. Also, interested if you’ve noticed a POA to POI shift in any of your guns when shooting off a bipod compared to off props or with varying amounts of shoulder pressure.
@@austinkroe that sounds expensive to test lol. Some stocks and chassis will have a poi shift from bipod to bag on prop that I've noticed. Haven't noticed any poi shift with different shoulder pressure.

the finger condoms have been sold for muzzles for years. I was given a pack years ago at the Shot Show In O'rleans. Idea was t keep rain, snow and grit out of the muzzle When I was there with Nugent. @@michaell397 moisture is naturally left behind after firing a round, so each shot has moisture helping to lubricate the bore. The problem is the 1st shot after a time that has a dry bore, it's going to create more friction and resistance creating a mv spike
It looks to me like there could be a low velocity on the second shot, but while it does seem to have happened multiple times it may be my imagination, but it would be interesting to see if it was statistically significant (as well as the degree of speed change with different ammo ?)
I still believe it's the amount of oxygen that causes higher velocity of first shot. By blowing through straw the air is replaced with moisture and Carbon Dioxide and both are non combustion materials and keep the velocities in tight figures. Some lubricants also burn and might help in increasing the velocity by few feet per second and that can be checked by rubbing the tips with alcohol patches and get the velocities compared with the lubricated ones 😅
I am not sure about this take. Because when you exhale most of the oxygen that you breathed in is exhaled, you only use a small amount of the oxygen in each breath when your not doing vigorous work. Additionally having more or less oxygen in the barrel shouldn't effect the combustion very much as the gunpowder is self oxidizing and the oxygen in the barrel is separated from the combustion at all times by the projectile. As for the lubricant burning, that could be an interesting thing to test.
Hi Josh, just wondering what is your average cold bore shift. I am averaging .1 and after 150 200 rounds my cold bore is .2mil. Not sure about the other tight spots theory as there isnt enough time for the metal to take the heat, i think of annealing brass flame time along with that.

Is “cold bore shift” unique to .22 or common across calibers? Would think this is something the military has studied. Something the artillery has looked into. Is it something that must be accounted for. (Would need one damn big straw)
Military shooting does not require "accurate shooting" as competition does. The military usually has wider tolerances for acceptance. While you or I might require half MOA or better, I believe, military accept 3 MOA. Therefore, cold bore shift is not something to concern them.
I have a point of impact question that is not just relative to the first shot. I watched your vids. and Day at the range vids. and I am wondering why is there a POI., shift target to target? Nobody seems to address this phenomena. Either it's point of aim or there is something else going on. One group is at 11 o'clock and the next group will have a flier at 11 and the rest of the group is at 2 o'clock, or something to that effect. I, neither have the skill or the equipment to under-take such a study, but I figure that since the 22, is one of the longest and most produced rounds in the world, someone would have looked into this by now. I'm guessing most of the time, while shooting groups, people don't adjust the scope to hit the center dot because they want that consistent aiming point, but I would think that on a challenge target, with one shot per target, that would be ideal. I'm I right or wrong on this? I thank you for your videos and the knowledge I'm gaining watching them. I am planning to get into bench rest, or something in the near future so I'm trying to soak up as much as I can.
Poi shift can be from something as simple as wind direction etc. Production rifles are much more prone to this as well. Custom smith'd rifles will have the actions trued eliminating any shift due to expansion as the rifle heats up
You mention that it’s moisture buildup inside the barrel but blowing with a straw removes it I would think that would add more moisture from your warm mouth and lungs I would lean more towards the oxygen amount like a mono core suppressor has a 1st round pop after the first shot it’s quite.
Hey Josh, any plans to get a Victrix 22lr? Fellow CZcamsr "X Ring" did a recent video where he was shooting 0.1's straight out of the box. He said Vudoos and Rim X's just can't compete and the Victrix has no feeding issues which is a huge bonus.

It’s in the works on the Victrix. I’m hoping to get my hands on one soon! Also, I believe that the testing that Josh is doing with the straw has total merit very similar to much of the suppressor testing I’ve done with regards to first round pop. The first shot is always louder because of the oxygen within the suppressor itself ,all subsequent shots are normalized and are much quieter because the displacement of oxygen.

I see a slight drop on the 2nd depending on which ammo etc but its usually 10 fps so within the acceptable ES.

At a match id just plug the barrel like we did in the 1st video.
Or you could just blow in the chamber during your make ready

I actually meant your adding moisture with the straw. I believe the mv jump is due to airflow removing the moisture

Also, I believe that the testing that Josh is doing with the straw has total merit very similar to much of the suppressor testing I’ve done with regards to first round pop. The first shot is always louder because of the oxygen within the suppressor itself ,all subsequent shots are normalized and are much quieter because the displacement of oxygen.
But what did that do to group sizes??
Out of that rifle it eliminated my first round from being .2 high.
Its not gonna affect group sizes so much as eliminate that 1st round mv jump

I am looking for a new rifle & that looks to be the exact one, I notice the Theos but nothing else, please could you list all geek specs so I can replicate a full clone, especially the ultra low, forward reach (3"?)mount, I have looked without success.
