US Marine Breaks Down Military Movies | GQ - Zábava
I remember in bootcamp I smacked a mosquito off my neck. My company commander then made me pick up that mosquito, dig a hole, bury the mosquito, name the mosquito, then say it a prayer in front of all the other companies.... good times
ha! Thanks for writing your experience, that's hilarious.
What did you name the mosquito?

Update: November 14, 2019. I’m a behind the scenes kind of guy so when GQ called me to be in front of the camera, I was incredibly nervous-absolute trepidation. Three weeks later and over 5.5 million views, the messages of encouragement, love and support have been profoundly appreciated. I try to read everyone of them and respond if I can. Sincerely grateful to GQ for the opportunity they gave me. Hope we can do it again in the future. And thank you all for watching.
Original Post-To clear up some misconceptions 1) No, I was not dishonorably discharged. Honorable discharge after eight years as a Marine infantryman 2) yes, after the military I gained weight. War and depression will do that and I’m working on it. 3) I did not serve in Iraq, I served in Afghanistan. 4) a correction is needed, I was incorrect to say the lower receiver of an M-16A1 was made by Mattel, it appears I was taught a myth while in the Marines, which is also not uncommon. 5) I did not know what movies or scenes would be shown to me, so everything was off the top of my head. 6) Thank you to everyone who enjoyed watching the video 7) if you didn’t enjoy it, that’s okay, no hate here. 8) I can’t control the sound of my voice, apologies for that.
James LaPorta I thought it was awesome man - you were eloquent and really interesting!
Makes me sad people just assume the worst and feel the need to write it online. Wish you didn't had to clarify some of these or apologize for your voice. Thanks for the video, I found it really interesting and I wish you the best for your mental health.
It was really a joy to watch! Thanks for making it happen.

"Jody is like an urban myth."
He was definitely being polite here. Jody is alive and well, and at every military base.
Jody's British cousin is Leroy.
Are you Jody?
That sunnavabish fecked my ex-wife while I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. He took the form of a banker, her boss, at Wells Fargo at the time. He shapeshifts and appears all over, at all times, like Santa claus, to feck all our wives/Gf's while we're training or deployed. He's real. And his real name is Jim.
Jodies deserve to be court marshalled
See my comment. Jody is kinda real.
My friends dad was in Vietnam. He said full metal jacket was by far the most accurate as far as what boot camp at that time was like.
My ex thought so too
Pretty much the same in 2004. I hope it never changes TBH
My Dad went thru the USMC Boot Camp in 1947 and when he watched the movie, he was very impressed. He called out the beating Private Pyle got before he ever saw the scene. Meanwhile, the Army Boot Camp during my son't time in 2014 allowed recruits to "pull out a stress card" if they were overwhelmed so they could take a break.
I went in 05 and it’s pretty accurate imo. His yelling and antics are familiar however being obviously being comedic for the sake of the movie. For me in my platoon it was just intense screaming and bs when you were interacting with the dis. It was more like 3 guys spitting all over your face yelling insane incoherent nonsense while you yell aye aye sir trying keep your composure.
Ex-BF had just gotten out of the Marine Corps when the movie came out. He said it is very accurate. You could do more back then and get away with it. Is it any wonder it was accurate with the great R. Lee Ermey.

9:22 Just a little correction. Combat Medics during WW2 absolutely carried weapons, however Desmond Doss was a devout pacifist and refused to disobey one of the Ten Commandments that’s says you should not kill. The fact that he saved that man lives without a weapons is what is spectacular.
It was a very heroic thing for him to do in light of his interpretation of the 6th Commandment. However, most modern Bibles now correctly translate the Hebrew as stating “thou shall not murder“ versus “thou shalt not kill“. Otherwise the behavior of the old testament Hebrew armies would’ve been violating God’s direct command while under his command.
Yeah, I also caught that and knew he was mistaken. I wasn't going to correct him until I saw yours. That will be sufficient.
Semper Fi
He was not a coward.
@@vitesse_arnhem He was a medic and saved peoples lives, y'know like a medic does. The medic's job is not to shoot people it is to help the wounded, and despite being shot at, he still did his job. A coward would hide and not help people but that is simply not the case for Desmond Doss.
@@spahvahnishsniffah Is this the same guy who refused to shoot and refused to vote? Anyone who runs through a war zone deserves respect, but people who refuse to vote are fools.
I always saw Full Metal Jacket as an anti war film so to hear that people joined the military because of the fill is like hearing kids joining gangs after watching Blood in Blood Out .
Oh believe me I've met a few who did after watching that movie
its becuae half of the film is military training and its quite gripping however all the vietnam but is really metaphorical and woke and deep and thats the anti-war bit
I think making anti-war movies is almost a paradox. Too make a true anti-war film means you have to make it too un-comfortable to watch, Like "Johnny Got His Gun" or "Come And See"
A good chunk of mainstream war films are anti-war at their core. I really can't think of a single mainstream war film that is pro war.
Boys in the hood, Menace to society, etc nothing new, of course it makes kids want to dress and act like gangsters.
As a former Marine myself, you did a fantastic job and represented us well. I have also struggled with my weight and depression after I got out. This is extremely common and often not talked about. Semper Fidelis brother.
I do get that training has to be that hard, but I still do not condone this kind of behaviour. It just destroys a part of us. It is actually really sad. I believe there can be other methods of training an army without hazing. But please do correct me if I am wrong.
Still I got loads of respect for soldiers because I know for sure, I couldn't endure anything of that kind.

@@Leprutz Well that's kind of the point of boot camp. They break you down (destroy a part you, as you put it) and rebuild you as a marine. It's supposed to be brutal because the things one may encounter during deployment will make boot camp look like Disneyland.
Mav Taco Thank you for your service.
**slams head into chalk board**
“That’s accurate.”
Not an expert on US military but.. IF an instructor touches and hurts a recruit, he IS responsible. It is a court case. Sadly, it's hard to validate. The instructor is, or should be, responsible for the safety of the recruits.. Again, in many countries, this is a joke… But many might recognize the situation at a workplace. The same rules apply. This is the 21th century, not the middle ages. Just letting everyone know...

R. Lee Ermey is without a doubt the greatest representation of a DI in cinema....ever. Very accurate. His portrayal was the closest to when I went through basic training in 1984.
It's weird how few people know that R. Lee Ermey played a DI in "The Boys in Company C".
Same type of movie as Full Metal Jacket (boot camp then off to Vietnam). The ending is stranger than grunts singing the Mickey Mouse Show song.
The accuracy may be due to him being a real DI in the USMC.
@@xuser48 Correct. Another very accurate DI was Santos Morales, the man who portrayed the Senior DI in "The Boy's in Company C" in which Ermey played the junior buck Sergeant DI.

I am related to a Vietnam veteran (RIP) who was in R. Lee Ermeys platoon who told me that the thing that bothered him most about the movie was that they show that the drill instructor struck recruits - he said they were not allowed to do that. They did, however, have plenty of ways to psychologically break down recruits who refused to obey.
Sorry...thats BS...at least prior to 1975 (recruit killed at MCRD SD).... especially in 3rd BN MCRD SD (my dad did 2 tours with I company 3rd BN.... I observed the same during my enlistment
Yeah hands on instruction was still happening after 2000. Usually it was something quick, but as it became more involved they would take the recruit somewhere and make adjustments. So they aren't supposed to happen any more, it isn't as common as it once was, but it happens to most recruits at some point.
That maybe true about not punching recruits but they still kicked, punched, stepped on our heads and occasionally close line running recruits who ran too close to a Drill Instructor. I only got punched once in the face.
Technically they weren't allowed but did it happen?Absolutely.I didn't see it in my platoon but I knew people who were there before me and it happened all the time. And yes, they absolutely punched recruits, usually in the stomach.
R. Lee Ermy absolutely terrified me when I first saw Full Metal Jacket. He still does! Vincent D’onofrio broke my heart. Stunning performances.

Imagine making an anti-war film, trying to exaggerate everything bad about it and 30 years later, some ex-marine says "Yup, that's what it's like. This film made thousands of people want to join."
First thing you should learn is there is no "ex-marine". We are Marines and always will be. Also, it is disrespectful to not capitalize the "M" in Marine. Just in FYI.
Was it an anti war movie ? I never really got that impression, but that's only my view of course.
@@moe9098 A marine who gets offended by a letter not being capitalised? Yikes
@@jimreily7538 It's a bit of a grey area, but most people regard it as not portraying the US's actions in Vietnam in the best light. Especially with scenes like the Blackhawk (Edit: some folks have pointed out blackhawks weren't in service in Vietnam, thanks for the correction!) minigunner screaming "get some!" while indiscriminately massacring fleeing Vietcong troops, the second half of the movie tends to show the Marines as cold and unfeeling. It also (at least in my opinion) seemed to give the impression that they weren't actually there to accomplish any objective, and were really just there to kill NVA soldiers.
It's not as overtly anti-war as some other films of the time, but I wouldn't say it's pro-war, either.
Luke Rudloff we all do nub cause it’s a sign of disrespect. Make sure of proper etiquette before responding or shut up.
Watching all these scenes together let's you appreciate how good Full Metal Jacket was. In addition to being pretty accurate, its just great film making.

I can't believe I just saw this three years later, but this whole thing was fantastic. I wasn't a Marine, I was Army. But there's of course many parallels between the corps and the army. Little technicalities and little differences here and there, but a lot of it is very much the same. It was cool to see a regular enlisted guy talk about his experiences and what he noticed. I was saying so many of the same things even before he said it. They should do this more often.
Reminds me: a drill sergeant was getting a bit too cocky and aggressive with a new recruit on this side of the world. So he, the drill sergeant, challenged him to a fight to prove his "superiority" to other recruits. It went down really really bad. The new recruit knocked him out cold and completely humiliated him. Which tanked the sergeant's reputation...

I used 550 cord to secure my blankets to my bed... slept on top of everything...
Funny thing was,,,, when the DI came in and started flipping beds because someone messed up... at some point in life, when you've done your job, and you are a man of intellect, you'd actually be wiser after seeing all those dark sides of being alive. I have a boss, and he was in the war, seeing people being tortured alive and even after they're passing away, having to comply with a small amount of food to protect his family, having to defend himself in a situation when you actually have to put a man down with anything you have, and after all of those things and we are at peace now, he is like the nicest and the most patient person I've ever known, you can actually see it in his eyes tho, the pain and suffering, and that some part of his humanity is dead. But still, he is wise, he's not yelling in the street, and or doing stupid things, instead, he's become a more intellectual person, and teach the young how to be a man.

R Lee Ermey was my neighbor's drill instructor in boot camp. My neighbor said his character in Full Metal Jacket was exactly who he was in real life.
Even the punching and abuse 😂
I did Army Basic in the early 90's, I remember one of my drill sergeants, he was a tank driver, never raised his voice louder than needed to be heard, but he explained his teaching method the second day we were there as the three T's, first he'd teach us, then he'd test us and if we f'd it up, he'd torture us, we got really good at pushups and leg lifts. Our lead instructors goal was we would excel on drill and ceremony and aptitude tests or we'd excel at physical fitness, by the end we were top in all three. The only week we didn't have the lead platoon banner on our flag was one miserable week. Of course we started with 60 and only 46 of us graduated, vs the other three platoons in the company lost about 8 combined out of 180. They never endorsed or allowed hazing, really wasn't needed. Fair but tough is how I would describe them all. All of us wanted to quit at some point I'm sure, but it was definitely worth it.
I did Army BCT in 1970, very similar to what you described. Lots of PT as training or motivation. We were also tops in all 3. We graduated about 110 of the 160 that started. Many were re-cycled for physical reasons, more were still hospitalized. And a bunch were AWOL - they were drafted. Could not believe how many failed to qualify with the rifle, that was 2 weeks re-cycle to the range. Rifle expert was easy for me but I grew up a deer hunter in Western Pa. Some of them caught up to us at AIT but we were half way through. The drill sgts. Were hard but mostly fair.
The movie STRIPES was filmed at Ft. Knox and yes there were a lot of tanks on the roads all day, all night and weekends too. At least when I was there. Those were M-60 tanks in the film. Sgt. Hulka was realistic. I lived in the old 2 story wood barracks, many of them burned down, they were fire traps.

There is a Russian saying: "If you've been to the army, you don't laugh at the circus".
Weren't they ordered to kill imprisoned russians in ww2 ?
That's the most Russians thing I've ever heard
@Vlad Tepes it's means since in the military is very strict watching circus is a whole lot different experience compare to the one you were used to because you'll no longer have fun in the circus cause you got used to the strict no laughing in the military
@@onesidedunpure109 Actually there might be another meaning as well, military sometimes is like circus, if you been part of it you are part of the 'scene' and you doin some pretty stupid and unnecessary things so after being part of a circus for x amount of days in your life you might not find a normal circus funny anymore :D

In heartbreak ridge, they were filming in and around Camp Pendleton. If I recall correctly.
Supposedly the story is, the actors hung out with real marines to get a feel for it. Supposedly the marines even tossed them a few pieces of gear here and there, sort of as a loaner for the film.

Nidhogg I wouldn’t say he’s violent and aggressive. At least not on normal day to day activities. When I was younger my grandpa at 50 was very gentle and soft spoken. However to stay in shape he took still practiced boxing. I remember he knocked out 2 guys very quickly while the third ran away. Ex marine. It just depends really. The guys who were knocked out needed stitches and one had a broken jaw and socket. Sometimes people are strong enough and now how to use what they got compared to super strong but are clueless. That Part with the Marines standing on the catwalks.. such an underrated scene, and such a powerful moment. I got to my fleet grunt unit on a Friday evening..it was quite a bit uglier in real life than in the movie, I will say that. It began a very difficult year of float workups. They would try to break us any way possible..Like if they could break you, you did not belong anyway. We lose more marines in those first 6 months in the fleet than any other time. I try to explain it to people, and they never really understand. I was grateful in the end, it all made sense when i was senior and going to Iraq with some pretty hard boots lol
