The CheyTac M200 Intervention is a massive precision rifle chambered for the .408 CheyTac cartridge (although it can also be had in .375 CheyTac). It uses an action made by EDM Arms, and is capable of sub-MOA accuracy out to 2200-2500 yards (2000-2300 meters). There are other rifles that fulfill those specs as well, but the M200 Intervention gets an exaggerated amount of attention because it has a pretty distinctive look, with its large under-barrel carry handle and collapsing stock (you may recognize it from the 2007 movie "Shooter", based on a Stephen Hunter novel). Today I will take a look at some of the details of this rifle and its ammunition, and address the more common misunderstandings about it and long range shooting in general.

"You might recognize it from the 2007 movie Shooter"
Nah we all know this from MW2.

A rifle more well known for it's depiction in a video game then in real life or films.
Not very often you can say that.

This was the rifle Harambe was killed with so its only available by assassinating him in the Cincinnati Zoo
traditionalfire you also have to blaze it too
I like how professional shooters choose $3 spray paint finish for their $10k guns, but mall ninjas pay $200 to have their $500 Delton cerakoted.
Usually the pro's don't pay for the gun but sometimes do pay for the spray. They also don't get to keep it. The bigger joke is that the mall ninja bought the gun at all.
+meka erwin this one never saw any military/special forces use, so just a regular guy chose the cheap finish
whats the difference between 3$ green spraypaint and 100$ green spraypaint ? you guessed it the 100$ one is vegan.
USMC Scout Snipers paint their own rifles. They use spray paint.
how do you know no special forces used it don't they get to choose their weapons and why would you know what they picked?
You didn't mention the rigorous wind tunnel testing this weapon went through to idealize its aerodynamics for 360 noscopes.
1:32 Ian is the only human alive who can describe a sniper rifle's bipod as "sexy looking" and sound completely legit.
How many 1v1 matches were won with this gun?
Mark Guzman 45124531 games on rust
All of them were quickscopes only... obviously
Millions
The kinda comment that means I've never shot a gun unless it was in a game.
Hey guys, is this gun good for 360 No-Scoping? I'm asking for a friend.
this is good for a triple collateral on free for all.
But it gets RUSTy pretty fast
btf4 no noscopessssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Finally someone makes a real video over this rifle, like you said, there's not a lot of info on the M200. As I've traveled states to film for events I've only seen one replica before and a manufacturer rep told me it was slightly lighter than the real thing but it was still an uncomfortable experience to handle, real respect goes out to the man who had to lug a real one to any location of distance.
My dude!
Thanks MW2
A rifle primarily used for 720 noscopes.
Ian I swear to God you better quickscope it.
Don't forget to jump and do a 360 first.
You also need to time it right so its Winning killcam
Oh baby, a triple!
The Trifecta!
Ian be like "wtf are this guys saying"
I just got the horrible idea of cutting one down to pistol size.
I've always kinda wanted to make something like that. I'd probably make it out of an AR 15.
well this was going to be a "bit" different then anything you would find in a store.
Conceal carry .408 cheytac.
Because why not?
You could just go with the T/C Contender that's been chambered in .600 Nitro Express.
i feel so ashamed to say this, but call of duty is the only reason i knew about this gun
HOW DARE YOU :O
I just realised it's the real life equivalent of the srr61 from bf4.
Well I didn't know it period :) Stopped playing COD after world at war though.
Back in the US-Russian war, i was prone, just before the boundry.
I had this gun, i scoped in on the helipad.
Squeezed the trigger whilst aiming for a single soldier, but just as the bullet passed through his skull his friend ran up behind him.
Double-kill w/ Headshots
I was the best sniper in america, i've been everywhere.
From operation firestorm, to operation locker, i've rained 408 Cal death from 500 yards out.
My longest kill was from a helicopter i had my friend stabilize it while i rode in the back, 1080 yards out, took a good two seconds to pop him.
I think it was operation paracel storm, he was camping like a noob on the broken aircraft carrier.
Those where the days, i used to be able to run all day every day.
My old age has gotten to me unfortunately, and my sniping skills have deteriorated.
I only made it to rank 83, i miss being out there, hiding in a bbush, on a small hill in the back of the O-Z, racked up around 100 kills, with all different types of guns.
Through my service, i've seen some things... done some things that i wish i hadn't.
I was at lancing damn, the year was 2015.
There was a cool breeze, and a constant fear of the damn breaking.
In short, i hid away atop the large office buildings.
I saw something move in the distance, scoped in with my 20X-14X scope
I had my sights on the cockpit of an enemy helicopter, just spawned.
Not 10 seconds late i saw one of them chinese soldiers pop into the cockpit.
Boom
Helicopter goes down, mass chaos.
Two kills.
I see their faces everyday, mostly because every person in the O-Z where clones of eachother.
I'll play you 1v1 quickscopes
In case anyone is wondering, "Dohicky" is an industry term, and was chosen mainly for its compact form factor and ease-of-use. During the military testing process, it's primary competition was "Thingamabob". "Whatchamacallit" was also in the running, but dropped out earlier in the stress testing phase, as it was shown that its length and general overall unwieldiness prevented it from being used effectively.
oh boy i can remember the time i had my good ol CheyTac ,,,,, back when i was in the Army we use to quickscope all day long. but it was tough believe me , from the Favela in Brazil to the chernobyl wasteland i have seen it all. even a Russian Sub base.
yes it is true i fought all over the globe and the only thing i had was my good ol trusty Cheytac and a bottle of mountain dew.
That where the good days ,,,, fighting side by side with my sqaud mates XDonDeathclawX , don diablo and don dimago those where the days for sure ,,,,, and ofcourse Owning those pesky squeakers while trowing insults at them. HaHa we gave them so much hell thats for sure.
Now its all boosters,Jetpacks pewpew starwars stuff. ugh the generation of real Soldiers is long gone to Arma and Battlefield.

I still prefer the M21, spray and pray of the sniper world. lol

Second - i respect people that are good at their thing, respect to you, good sir.

Fourth... man, i love your name.
With that said, don't dare to detain you any longer.
In short: Anyone can buy the finest violin in the world... but you still have to learn how to play it.
Just because I play video games doesn't mean that I am not a combat veteran.
That is true, but the chances diminish significantly when you start *talking* about video games.
LOL.
+Forgotten Weapons not really...
i wouldnt be so quick to diminish video games, their potential for cognitive conditioning is already quite well known in the medical business ( alot of surgeons play videogames for that reason). Not only does regular playtime increase reflexes and finesse , it also shows clear improvement in rapid decision making , which all quite frankly is what a good shooter needs.
So one could argue , that chances increase when you start playing them..
"This rifle can be accurate up to 3000 yards" And here I am being proud of hitting something at 500.
Oh baby a triple, oh yeah!
Ian I feel bad for you anytime a famous gun that has a meme connected to it comes up your comment section turns into regular internet chat.
Gamer views = more $$ from ad revenue
+Hughes Enterprises indeed. Could work to this channels benefit.
+V Guyver that's why I watch on full30 and CZcams and sometimes click on ads. This is how Ian makes his living.
Hughes Enterprises I often have adblock on my system, but I used the option to whitelist channels like this to make sure they get the revenue to be supported.
I get what your saying. He just spent ten minutes giving a concise history, and a detailed description of the features of, what is essentially, a masterful work of engineering, the culmination of great minds, and passionate craftsmen, just to have someone watch it and ask "yes, but can you quickscope with it?" It is asinine, and a little disrespectful, but I guess its to be expected, and maybe when they grow up they'll have a bit more appreciation for firearms after watching vids like this, rather than vids uploaded by people with "look, it makes a loud bang!!!" mentality from the "dual-wielding, full auto, exploding zombies" channels, that like to cater to the simple minded, easily amused children that make up an alarming portion of youtube viewers. (im just venting a bit really) Thanks Ian for keeping your feet on the ground, and not acting like a tacticool tool.
"Precision trick shooting device"
"Effective at 2000-3000 yards" = CQC quickscoping machine
That gun is featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and used frequently in multiplayer where the players are often running around with it quick scoping despite its massive weight and the player's goofy grip on the rifle. In MW2, the M200 Intervention does not negatively affect mobility while guns like the M4A1 are about 3/4ths as mobile.
Can it quickscope on rust?
Pls stop
Callum Williams
Get out!!
I would dare say that 60% of its recognizability comes from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. That gun was tits, and I'm sure that's why it was used in Shooter in the first place. The COD:MW2 effect popularized just about every gun in that game amongst this generation gun fans.
Shooter came out in 2007. MW2 came out in 2009.
The last bit of your comment, absolutely true, but the movie Shooter predates MW2 by about 3 years. I'd say the reverse effect happened in this case.
+toadie2k yeah I was guessing there on the relation with Shooter. I remember the movie, but it was garbage.
FiXXXer024 I remember liking it, but it didn't blow me away or anything
BF4 and ArmA 3 for me.
It hurts... nostalgia for the days when I took a 3000 metre shot at some bad guys in Pripyat after killing about 50 of them and camping for a week in a building without them finding the bodies... oh, I was just a leftenant back then. Now I'm old, have 10th prestige, and have been in SAS, 75th Regt., 1st SFOD Delta, TF141, Spetsnaz, Opfor, and Marine Force Recon. Life is dull now that I have no family and only all gold guns on my wall. All I can do is sit here, watching cable whilst drinking mountain dew. Sometimes I think back to when I fought on all 20 maps around the world, died about 3000 times, and screamed like a girl into the mic at enemies on the battlefield. Once, I got four care packages taken away from me, so I killed 25 enemies with a helicopter then just nuked the whole place. A nuke within a mile of me hurt, but I walked away just fine, and I brought my kdr up above 1 before quitting the specfor because I had trouble with nightmares from slaughtering hundreds of civvies in a russian airport in an attempt to start WW3. Makarov shot me in the head and they found my body, so I had to go to the Favela to find the shell that was right next to me when I died. I went to defend America and killed a few hundred ruskies with a laptop and missiles, then I went in an AC130 and killed even more. I proceeded to take Washington D.C. with just my M4 and a flare. After being lit on fire, I went to kill the traitorous general. I stormed an outpost full of elite men and killed em all, no big deal. Then while I had been stabbed I pulled the knife out of my stomach and threw it at his eye lol. A few days later, I was recovered and I went after Makarov. Then I died and I had to go hang him from the helipad on his highrise in dubai. Then I smoked a cigar while watching his body swing around. So yeah. I guess you could say that I've seen some shit. I have this gun still on my wall with gold camo.

Probably going to be difficult because it is pretty rare/expensive. But I'd love to see your take on the Walther WA2000.
armoredp Thats an AWESOME gun.
JakeTheRipper 73 Yeah, but it's a shame you can find so little about it. Like one video on CZcams where a guy is shooting it.
Would be great to have on this show especially if he is allowed to strip it for us.
The Cheytac .408 has some of the best bullet coefficient out there, it's a GREAT long range round.
.338 lapua: 250 grain bullet @ 3000 FPS, 4997 lb ft of muzzle energy, solid, G1 BC 0.648, supersonic range 1738 yds, max range 1738 yds,, 28" barrel
.408 cheytac: 420 grain bullet @ 3000 FPS, 8395 lb ft of muzzle energy, copper nickel alloy, G1 BC 0.949 over 2 miles, supersonic range 2575 yds, balance flight means that bullet doesn't lose accuracy though sound barrier, is accurate to 3500 yds, first round hits and 0.5 moa accuracy at 2500 yds, max range 3500 yds+, 29" barrel
.50 BMG: 661 grain bullet @ 2750 FPS, 11102 lb ft of muzzle energy, lead core fmj M33 Ball ammunition, G1 BC 0.62, supersonic range 1500 yds, no balance flight, max range 1500 yds, 29" barrel
.408 has huge advantage over both rounds . over 625 yds the 408 cheytac has more kinetic energy than the .50 bmg and talking about power and penetration, the 408 cheytac ap round penetrates 24mm of hard steel but the .50 bmg ap, API and api-t penetrate just 22mm. even with hornady a max bullets, the best 50 bmg bullets, they only have a max range and supersonic range of 2200 yards and don't have balanced flight, so are completely useless after that, while 408 bullet are useful to 3500 yds and beyond
I think we both know why this one is popular
Eric Lavric lol MW2
I love how when he was saying the reason ppl know this gun he didn't say cod mw2
so are you part of faze clan or are you an optic?
I'd wager the only thing more accurate than rifles of this grade are those precision rail guns.
I would imagine that to be so
+CoreMaster111 no nuke needed. Drone might just do the trick.
***** indeed. Would love to see a small arms version one in action someday.
Guided mortar munition(like STRIX) would do the job much more cheaply
+traditionalfire
As Simon Woo said, a railgun in this context is a big, blocky rifle-like thing in an ultra-precise mounting. They basically cut out all (or at least most) physical interaction with the shooter.
They also tend to weigh a huge amount.
The Intervention, the magazine fed, fairly accurate, and the MLG sniper
Video popped into my recommendations a bit of time after this gun was released to MWII. It's like Google knows.
A large part of the popularity of this gun, as you might have guessed from the comments, comes from the game Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 where the gun features quite prominently in both the single player and multiplayer modes. The gun is 'endgame' material and is enough to kill enemies and other players in a single shot, but the game features nothing that would be considered long range shooting. In essence, and contrary to its real life variant, weapons like this, the CoD4's M82, Counter-Strikes AWM etc, require no skill to be used effectively, allowing players to kill other players at close range with a single shot to any part of the body while their enemies will be using guns that can take upwards of 6 shots to kill them in return. You obviously don't have to deal with the weight and bulk of these weapons in a video game and they basically take on the form of a high power pump-action shotgun but with pinpoint accuracy and no spread (Where the "No scope" obsession comes from). That imbues the player using it with a great sense of skill, power and strength, a false sense of being some amazing legendary Sniper, and a bond between the player and the weapon that makes them feel that way forms. Of course Airsoft companies follow these kinds of things. Some people would argue that the guns that feature in many of these games are just based on Airsoft models, and there is some truth to that, but in many cases it's the Airsoft company basing a gun on "Which is the most popular gun in the most popular game right now".
Thank you for calling out quickscoping for what it is. Most people play with aim assist most of the time anyway which makes it easier when the game locks on for you. Left trigger right trigger is all it is.
Hey no problem :D I just wanted to explain it for anybody who didn't know. Non-gamers might not get the obsession with guns like this, even though this appears in Shooter too.
It's gaming man, it doesn't require much skill period. LOL. Just time. Anyone can sit down and kick ass at a game in 10 minutes. That's one of the reasons gaming never took off for me, anyone can do it easily, anyone can sit down, after 10 minutes play and win. I prefer some more talented arts, I guess you could say. Some games are fun though(I was the biggest borderlands 2 fan ever) but I digress. Plus, a few common knowledge bits on soldering and circuits, I can create a modded controller(also in 10 minutes) that'll completely destroy your gaming world. Gaming is very easy to do, very easy to be ruined. Not my cup of tea. LOL.
Umm.... the AWP in CS GO requires skill, it is pretty damn hard to use that gun at times, you can't just go all willy nilly with it and expect 30 kills.
"...require no skill to be used effectively..." ??? Are you sure about that?
I'm guilty of making a cardboard model of one. I wish i had a real one. SO expensive.
I learned that I'll need a 155mm howitzer to hit anything at 2,500 yards.
can't believe he made a video about the intervention and didn't mention MW2 even once.
Meme Gun.

This is one of the most fascinating channels. The amount of information you have on guns is incredible!
"A crap Ton of muzzle energy" now that's extremely technical jargon. My favorite quote!
"Forgotten weapons" uses the most OP sniper rifle in CoD history. GG dude. Keep up the channel.
actually the MW3 barret was better in every way.

i am aware on the game it was in, and this is in response to the original post. he said it was the most OP gun in COD history. and as much as i loved this gun in MW2 it was not the most OP.
also i state again. who cares, this is the real deal. and it is cool regardless of the gun.

I like most of your videos, I love the backstory about the weapons and how you present the facts and you also dispel the myths while showing a respect to the history of each and the men who have a love of the weapon due to how it served them or kept them and their buddies alive, this is not a forgotten weapon by any means but it's an awesome delivery system in the hands of those who've devoted themselves to the discipline of mastering it and honed their skills by their utter dedication to their craft, I've heard the tactical and technical gurus discuss this rifle but I feel I've gained more from your quick review than I did watching all of theirs combined and at the end of the day I just respect the hell out of your opinion and although I don't always agree with you it's because my opinions are based on what little I know and yours are the culmination of your experience and overwhelming breadth of your weapons knowledge, thanks for your insights and another great video Ian
your incredibly knowledgeable and articulate with every gun you present, and i thoroughly enjoy all the videos you put out. great work!
I think that was an excellent video explaining the skill required for long range shooting. Like any tool, the user needs to be skilled enough to be able to take full advantage of the range that rifle provides.
I really like how you edited in shots of different features of the gun while still talking about its history and use.
Ian, I'd love it if you could do a firearms basics series to teach newbies like my self the basics of firearms. But not so basic like I've never heard of a firearm before. I love your videos and how detailed and concise they are. Keep up the good work!
Take a moment and observe the beauty of the M200 with me. Observe the monopod design, an endlessly durable and functional column of solid metal, remeniscing one's thoughts to a column on a long abandoned temple. Grace your eyes onto that built-in level, just a cylinder of knurled contained metal. Everything is unassuming, yet there are a few features that jump out at you and shout "This is special". Look at that riser mount for that Nightforce. So many minutes of elevation give hint as to the distance this rifle can reach, like a special forces bodyguard wearing a finely tailored Armani suit, barely concealing the rippling muscles and icy veins beneath. The way the free-floated smooth handguard just delicately presents itself around the barrel, nothing gaudy at all, and with that unassuming and indestructible bipod design gracing the end like a shoe on the end of a ballerina's foot. The buttstock, collapsible yet solid as the Pentagon, gently arches over the inside cavity like a flying buttress in a gothic cathedral. The carry handle, utterly functional, yet romantically beautiful like the fossilized jawbone of an ancient predator. Take in the rifle as a whole, whose emotionless parallel lines betray the brutal and surgical death it can deal in the right hands. The M200 represents the zenith of what a self-absorbed and competent killer can be. It had it's own round, it's own suppressor, and its own special set of quirks and features. Complete selfishness, yet deserved. The Dracula of firearms. Seen and beloved in TV shows, movies, and video games alike, yet wholly unseen and unobtainable to all but the most desirous. It is overwhelmingly heavy, and has one purpose. It's only purpose is to be the best at one single objective, and that is killing people or destroying things from a stationary position very, very, very far away. And that friends, is pure beauty to me.
Cole Pennock Well said my friend, well said.
Commences gun-fapping
I am not even into the guns but I love your videos
Love these videos. That you went into the insane skills and variables involved long range shooting made the video stand out.
Nobody who played modern warfare 2 will forget this weapon :(
"The only person who could miss with this gun is the sucker with the bread to buy it."
Ken Foree in Dawn of the Dead
Man, you always get to play with the coolest weapons.
The knowledge you have for weapons is what I strive to achieve. I listen to so much of your stuff
anyone who's played call of duty modern warfare 1, 2 or 3 also knows this rifle. I'd never heard of it till MW. Didn't see anything on it ever past that till now. thanks a bunch for the video.
This was one of your most technical episodes yet. Sadly, it's NSFW in my profession; however, it would be a fascinating case study for my high school physics unit. Thanks, eh.
ive noticed a vast increase in quality in your videos. Better camera, better editing. Keep up the work, im loving it!
I appreciate the history you provide on these weapons. Thank you!
Thanks Ian , learned more from you in 10 mins than everyone else , Rock Island is lucky to have your services .
Funny that people think you just buy a precision rifle and become Hathcock........yet,they don't think you can buy a Steinway and instantly go from chopsticks to performing Chopin at Carnegie Hall
"You could take this same action and barrel system, put it in a traditional-style stock, and shoot just as well." ... Now I totally want someone to do that. Twenty-first-century T-gewehr. :)
I really like your practical and pragmatic approach to the weapons you describe. In this video you provided information from simple stuff like the carry handle (because the gun weighs a ton) to complex things like a bullet losing accuracy when going from supersonic to subsonic speed, but it's all important details about how the gun works in real life. No glorifying or gun porn.
I guess I'm biased as a grew up with a father who is an extremely pragmatic engineer.
A GREAT narrative, Ian. Your characterization of the equipment vs the skill, and the will is ... ahem ... Bang On!
Very interesting. I remember first seeing this in I believe Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Loved all the info on the firearm! Nice job Ian as always!!
That bolt looks like a scaled-up Savage model 10/110.
i like the fact that you also do the odd modern gun that is somewhat relevant, since you always make good videos with good information about the guns.
I love this guys videos he really helps you understand how the weapon works
I thought this was gonna be "let's take a look at this famous but realistically obscure gun" not "Ian's precision shooting lesson"
9:40
Totally right, owing a scalpel doesn't make one a surgeon.
you have a talent , Ian ,for sliiiding right into that sell at the end of your always informative, and always entertaining videos....
Excellent video, very precise and accurate information. Thanks for your work online, worth every second.
Hey Ian, do you think it would be possible to do a video going over the history of the AR-15? As in, showing its prototype as well as going through the various models (early models, as well as experimental models and such)?
Such a sweet looking rifle. I am one of those 12 y.o.s who really enjoyed mw2. So I am extremely biased in that sense. Thanks for the extremely informative and entertaining video, Ian. Always a pleasure.
Excellent explanation of the move through transonic velocity.
Learned a lot here. Thanks for taking the time to explain the rifle.
The army and special ops in todays modern warfare used this rifle by specially trained 11 year olds with remote controllers and cheap Walmart microphones that was operating in the enemies wavelenght in their radiostation back in 2011. This makes the psycological warfare the main winning factor for these extraordinary high pitched premature children that are reacting to every kill they may get using the "no-scope rotational tactic whilst falling down from a given altitude" I think many doens't know about the sniperrifles tailor-made purpose of being operated by smaller humans that can't carry other heavy duty sniper rifles like the Barrett for example. Where these Spec-Ops 11-year olds are now, is still a blind mystery. Some say that technology has allowed their mics to not be as cancerrous, and some claims the step-down from the gaming console Xbox 360 is the reason.
My main problem with precision shooting is time/money, unless your a millionaire you can't afford glass, spotting scope, weather tools/computers, ammo, gun it's neverending. Also like you said the time it takes to actually understand principles/practice, and it's to much time for regular working people, plus a lot of places don't have ranges that long. Anyway great video, the Cheytec always looked like a franken-gun to me personally.
another key factor to shooting past 1000 yards is also called the Coriolis effect if you don't know what it is look into it it's actually quite interesting
I'm fairly certain there's more video game representation of this gun then there are actual guns in existence.
How does this even "Forgotten"?
Nevermind that, i love the review
Rock Island Auctioneer is watching him record this, thinking "He's ruining it for us, oh god"
Just picked up one of these in a video game where they've portrayed it with a magazine well sticking out the left side, and named it the 'Ekho', very pleased to have one, albeit of the virtual, ephemeral variety XD
The longest confirmed hit on a target (a paper target) was made with this gun, I think.
Capt.price loves that weapon,he says it works great in cold weather and has near as many kills as he's knife.
👀❤-MW2-
I remember when this video came out hardly anyone was talking about the video game. The internet has made sure to correct that mistake
I had the pleasure of viewing one and let me tell you it's amazing to witness it first hand
Cory McNevin how about you go belly flop from a sky scraper. And yes I did. If I wasn't scared of dropping the thirteen grand on it I would have owned it
It's funny because I know that at least 1 person came onto this video because it's in mw2
Andrew Morris what's mw2?
Mikhail Kalashnikov military wives 2. it was a porno that was set in a marine armory. this gun was in it.
Michael s that's cool dude... I don't watch porn though haha have the wife for that...
and it was you
Kelpy G lol idk if that was a joke or not but mw2 is modern warfare 2 which this gun gets most of its popularity from along with battle field 4.
