  • 😍 I MADE LUTS FOR THIS PICTURE PROFILE! whoismatt.com/luts
I've decided to call this picture profile "MattFlat." Because it rhymes and is fun to say.
Three months ago, I started making wedding cinematography training videos to help others film weddings. It took about a week after uploading my first video for me to discover that there is a massive community of wedding cinematographers out there that want to get better at their craft. As I produce more videos in this series, I find that I am asked even more questions in comments and emails. These messages are added to an ever increasing list of videos that I will be making in the future.
By far though, the most popular question I have received is, "Which picture profile should I use when shooting with my A7Sii?" This is definitely a complicated question due to the sheer depth of the picture profile menu on the A7Sii and FS5, as well as how many differing opinions there are across the many blogs and forums across the Internet. Your train of thought may have been something like mine: "Do I shoot with the new fancy SLOG3? But doesn't that cause noise in the shadows? What about SLOG2 instead? Isn't that going to cause an odd green tint in some images? Maybe one of the Cinegammas then? Aren't those called Hypergammas in the higher end Sony Cameras? Why is everything so different? Am I crazy? Does this even look better?"
I'm excited to say that today I have an answer for you. After extensive testing, and reading throughout the vast corners of the Internet so you don't have to, I have found an ideal picture profile. Please keep in mind that while this may be my favorite picture profile, it doesn't have to be yours. You can have a different opinion from me, and that is alright.
I wanted a picture profile that would suit my needs well. It needed wide dynamic range, a flat image for color grading (but not too flat!), and be versatile for the wide variety of shooting locations I typically go through on a wedding day.
Those needs almost immediately cut SLOG2 and SLOG3, with their minimum ISOs of 1600, and their bright exposure requirements, from my list of options for picture profiles. Incidentally, the 8-bit codec of the A7Sii in SLOG3 can also cause banding in the finer color gradients like blue skies etc. I wanted to avoid this as well.
If you don't feel like watching me ramble in the above video for 6 minutes about picture profiles, here are the settings for my favorite picture profile:
SETTINGS FOR MY FAVORITE PICTURE PROFILE FOR THE SONY A7Sii and FS5
    Reset PP8 to default.
Change the Gamut from SLOG3 to CINE4.
That's it! Congratulations, you're now shooting in my favorite picture profile! Leave all the other settings as they are. Go try it out and see how you like it. I'll be making another video soon, showing how I color grade this picture profile.
Special thanks for Marien Breithouwer for originally sharing this picture profile.

HOW TO EXPOSE THIS PICTURE PROFILE:
A lot of the questions I receive on this video are about how to properly expose your videos when shooting with it. I generally keep my exposure between .3 and .7 stops over on the built in exposure meter. I also film with zebras on and set to 100+. If the video looks bright, but it is only saying .7 over and there are no zebras then I know it will look good.
    Hope that helps you! :)

Do I need to change aperture or shutter speed to achieve this exposure meter reading? I'm having trouble with outdoor filming, too overexposed. Using a Sony a7sii.

      @marcosmontero7141 Pƙed 6 lety +1

Hi Matt, On editing do you then lower the exposure to what it would have been 0.0 on camera or do you keep footage with that +0.3/0.7 on the edit? My initial guess is that the reason you overexpose to 0.3/0.7 is to capture more detail on the shadows but then you would normaly bring in back to 0.0, is that right?

Biggest difficulty is colour grading for me. I find using Slog2 and running film convert is quickest and easiest as it has the slog2 profile all ready to go. very minor tweaking if any after I apply the LUT.
    - I try to keep exposure around +1 stop and never had any issues thus far in post.
Waiting for your colour grading video to see which is a faster process while maximizing DR.

I just got a second hand A7 II, and it's my first experience getting into video and the sony system, coming from Nikon and Fuji for photo specifically.
I have been playing around with some settings, dropping them on the computer and haven't dug the results. I have a big project coming next month so this is exactly what I wanted, a setting suggestion that would allow me to go to different conditions and be able to get going fast making minor adjustments to the exposure, white balance and focus and be done with that.
Thanks, I have graded sony footage in the past so I'm not too worried about the post, but I was worried in the filming stage on how to get a good recording.

Thanks for posting this. Your reasons for not wanting to shoot SLOG aren't that far from those shooting a film. In a sense, much independent filmmaking is like shooting a wedding. Not a lot of light, changing conditions, not much time because no permit, etc... So this is spot on help.

Very interesting video thanks. Slightly confused Matt, I thought the general recommendation from Sony for the Slog2 curve is an underexposed image, (not an almost overexposed image) having 18% grey sitting at 32% IRE (compared to 42% for a standard rec709 curve), in order to maximize dynamic range. Granted some people (eg. Alister Chapman at xdcam-user) prefer giving it 1 to 2 stops more than that in order to reduce noise in the shadows, especially when using 8 bit cameras like the a7sII.

Thanks so much for this simple trick. With my ZV-1 I can only use the S-Gamut3.Cine color mode in combination with the Cine2 gamma setting. But it is way better than the default PP6 combination “Cine2 gamma + Movie color mode” and even better than the often recommended combination of “Cine2 gamma + Pro color mode”. I watched countless tutorials for hours because I wanted something easy to shoot with (I neither have the time nor the experience for playing around with exposure settings when shooting) and easy to edit (because I don’t have the time to play with color wheels for hours when editing). With the combination of Cine2 gamma + S-Gamut3.Cine color mode I have great dynamic range, but still only need three or four clicks (using manual correction, no LUTs) in DaVinci Resolve to achieve a nice naturally saturated look with perfect skin tones.

Finally! It's like back in the old fs100/700 days and all the custom PP's that were on the forums. I remember having so much fun playing with other people's settings. People don't realize that you can actually set up some of the other picture profiles to essentially mimic S-Log if you know what you're doing with your Gamma, Knee and Black Level settings, etc., without, as you said, the limitations of using Sony's log profile, the way they've implemented it.
Most assume that the ISO limit is simply because it's the "native" sensitivity level of the sensor, so the D.R. is best there. And originally that was partially true, but what I also think they're trying to do is simulate the "Cine EI (Exposure Index)" mode on the CineAlta cameras, which locks you into the native sensitivity of the camera too (but also limits/opens up more things on the CineAlta cameras as well, which is why I consider it "simulating" the Cine EI mode). It's all with a good heart though, as Sony just wants to give you the best image possible... IF you know what you're doing, and/or are able to deal/work with the limitations for your specific work-flow, which... not everyone knows how, wants to, or is able to deal with, given their specific needs. Your example is a great one and I think speaks for a large amount of shooters; which is why it's good to know how and when to dive into the PP settings and change 'em around a bit.
Know your camera's strengths AND weaknesses, accept and work with them to deliver the best end result possible. Super dooper ultra mega flat video profiles are not always the end all be all ways to shoot. Sure sometimes it is, but just as often, it isn't.

Thanks for the great tutorials Matt. I would be very interested in how you gauge WB on your shoots. I don't shoot weddings, but I do shoot in varied locations and find things like grey cards, colour sheets (and I have an expodisc), to be too much time wasting when my work is so run-and-gun. What's your method?

What picture profile did you use in Iceland landscape? And instead change pp8 to cine 4, setup to cine 2? Would be more flat to pos production. Do you agree?

Awesome! I tried shooting some video with SLOG3 but ended up with alot of noise. I was shooting outside. But let me get this straight ( IM NEW TO THIS :D ) - slog3 gives me the opportunity to color grade more accurate afterwards? or??? If you could explain the abc to it?

    • @whoismatt

Slog3 allows for more dynamic range, so your highlights will not be blown out and your shadows will not be too dark.

AtillaZilla Don't waste your time with log on that camera, looks like shit and you'll never get the colors back right in post. Sure it retains slightly more detail, but at the expense of everything else, most likely due to being 8 bit.

Great video! As an amateur, I've been using PP5 (Cine1) which seems more manageable to use than S-Log2 which I sometimes struggle with in terms of exposure and often frustrated in post grading. Would you suggest moving to MattFlat? Also, do you have a video tutorial on how to get a proper exposure with MattFlat (or maybe another Cine profile)? Thanks!

I've got a question for you. So I recently got a6500. B4 I didnt know anything about color grading and Using LUT and etcs... After watching some videos, I came across your video finally! My question is that is that picture profile works on a6500? and do you use it on picture still and video both?

I've found your tutorials very helpful Matt. One challenge, whether on the A7sII or III is when you have a client that just wants footage "straight-out-of-the-camera", they're not going to colour grade it or really tweak it at all. Happens more often than you would think. The trouble I have is finding picture profile settings to give a nice, well balanced look, similar to a REC709 that you'd see on the news. Any recommendations or links for settings? Thanks!

Have you done a video showing what kind of gear you use? I know you've briefly talked about them in the review videos, so how about one just about the gear and setups you have for the different situations, run and gun outdoors, church ceremony, reception, etc. Camera and lens combinations, audio, sliders, steady cam setup, tripods/monopods, etc. What do you think? Hook us up with the info!
