Hi Matt, I have been using photoshop for the past ten years and I have no idea about what I am doing, my progress had been really slow since nobody is willing share the essentials. Your video taught me a lot within minutes. I am very grateful. Please keep up the good work! God bless.
Just switched to the A7Sii from Nikon and I've been watching your videos all day, learning. You are super helpful and explain things well. And i appreciate your sarcasm. Subscribed.
+DanielMVideo Haha thanks! For the flatter profiles, I like to use the Gamma Display Assist to get an (oversaturated) preview of what the white balance will look like. I use it if I'm ever unsure of how the white balance is looking.
Matt you are repeatably "the man" thank you for teaching me soo much, and enabling my videos to be soo much better. You ever in Vancouver, this girl owes you a beer!
It's only a matter of time before your tutorials blow up with views. I watch a lot of your tutorials to get a glimpse at how someone else does things and the amount of detail you go into is awesome and refreshing. I always end up learning something new. Keep making these dude. They're very helpful.
Just got my a6300 a couple days ago. Upgraded from a canon t3i to start doing weddings professionally. I use CC and RGB curves but the way you go about editing was a tone of help! Thanks bro!
Coming from a t3i I couldn't be happier. I'm worried about having issues with overheating during the summer but it's still a huge upgrade! I do still hope to get an a7s ii in the future. Your videos have really helped me transition.
I'd love to hear what you think! I'm just excited I can finally shoot in lower light. I would've never been able to shoot what I did in a recent video I uploaded. My t3i would've failed miserably.
This was awesome! Thank you so much! I just bought a Sony a7iii and just booked for 9 weddings this year after doing 3 weddings last year, so I'm definitely taking notes and getting into color grading. Onto that color calibration tool. Thanks Matt! You're awesome.
Hey Matt! Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I am partially colour blind and this is a part of film making that I find awfully difficult. Using this as a reference has helped so much. I just posted my first video using your tutorial and I'd love any criticism/feedback from this amazing community. Cheers!
I've been trying to find a good color grading video for the longest and the information you shared was certainly the clearest, simplest, and best THANKS!
Thank you for the "Short" tutorial (other tutorials are way longer). It is really interesting listening to you explain everything, It helped me a lot to learn more about color grading and I will definitely use this in my next film!
I'm so incredibly thankful that you posted this video. I'm just starting out when it comes to video and this helped so much. I will be watching every one of your videos very soon. Marathon time!
I KNEW there was something different about you. I KNEW it. Watched your A7Sii (part 1-4) tutorial and I knew that you seemed different... and it's because you are a follower of Jesus like myself!!! Much respect, dude!
thanks for making this video.. I don't have sony .. 5d3 and t4i..but still helped me understand grading more than any other video..with canon seems like the video has very little flexibility before it starts to look weird but still huge improvement over what I was doing before ..4k files from my panasonic where a little easier to work with.. thanks again!!
I appreciate this so much just putting out this basic color grading. I now understand why my videos are so dark with horrible contrast lol. I'm learning so much from your videos and appreciate you taking the time to go in depth to why you make those choices. Also the resources you provided are helpful. Love to learn!
Dude, this video is crazy helpful. I've always used the basic correction and curves tab, but super scared of messing with the wheels. Thanks for making this.
Thanks a lot, I was searching the basics of color grading, there are a lot of videos on youtube but you finally made me understand the basics of curves and color reels, which were the missing parts of the basics of my color grading skills. and thanks for telling us about color grading central youtube channel: I think I can improve my skills greatly now with your informations and what I am going to discover on CGC channel. I really appreciate the claruty and simplicity of your explanations. I am editing weddings as well, it is 2 years now, but I always had deficiency in this part of the job. Thanks from Italy 🙂
Hi Matt!, I really appreciate a lot of work and effort you put in your videos and share. I found your color grading/ correction really stand out as you don't overdo things like some other. It is always about the effect you want to show, and right balance between color, contrast, exposure and saturation.. and you can find right balance between all of that ! I want to thank you sharing this outstanding tutorials / knowledge to us newbies :D cheers!
Hey, just wanted to let you know that you rule, I have watched all your training videos (on a friends recommendation) and ended up buying the A7sii. I'm only just starting out with video, but have been a wedding photographer for a few years. (Love my canon for that). I hope Sony gives you aaaaalllll the gear.
Thanks for the great information - well explained. I use FCP X but was able to translate pretty much everything you said. Appreciate your time and effort.
Subscribed to your channel yesterday and been watching a lot of your videos. Super insightful and I’ve already learned a ton. Keep it up my dude, looking forward to more
Yet again Matt you are a God send. I’ve took a load of footage in Gibraltar during a recent dive on some beautiful wrecks and I am only into about 31 hours learning premier .... it may sound a lot of hours but I am dam thick 😂-- moving on,,,, The video camera gave loads of green and I am moving to a bluer sea 👍
I have some Dude giving Matt a hard time with “ one cell dude comment” comments .... and moving forward ....Matt ... you are good and I thank you as I learn from you
Man, if you get older and cant film more. Just go to school and teach everything about filmmaking ;) Best course ever! Do you really grade step by step every clip? Somebody using adjustment layer and place one grade to all footage.
I've already enjoyed watching your videos and learning from you, but right when you said the words "Bible study group" at 6:42, my respect level for you jumped up significantly :) I always enjoy finding other Christian creators on CZcams.
Thank you for this great resource!! This vid really helped me understand what I’m doing with color wheels and curves. I haven’t tried your advice yet but I feel like it will be very beneficial! You da man!!
Matt, you and your awesome video's have become a really great resource for me! Thank you very much for another great video, really appreciate your work.
Hey Matt thanks for this great video, very helpful and informative as usual. Love your presentation style, straight to the point and easy to follow and understand. Bring on the LUTS's..
hey Matt! thank you for this video, very helpful! It would be great if in a next color grading tutorial, you include the waveform and vector scope for guide. We're learning a lot on your channel, greetings from Peru
Very well explained Matt, I will have to watch a few more of your videos to try and improve my video footage, up until now I’ve only ever edited with transitions , audio etc but never colour adjusting and grading! Looks fun and a little testing to get it right! But it does work really well and improve the film a great deal! I use Pinnacle 19 for my editing and not sure if it has a similar colour grading incorporated into the soft ware! Anyway please keep them coming!👍
You should mention lumetri scopes in a future video. They look incredibly intimidating to use but they're really helpful in making sure you don't peak your whites or crush your blacks and overall give you a better understanding of what the colour is doing in your clip. In some cases you can grade by looking exclusively at the scope (obviously not a wise thing to do but it goes to show how useful it is).
+Sam Caldwell I love scopes! But they are complicated enough that I figured they would be worth another separate video in the future. I didn't want to bog down the tutorial with 10 minutes talking about RGB parades haha.
Fair dibs man! Keep up the great content. I'm freelancing at the moment but I'm not really interested in doing weddings, however you're tips and discussions are incredibly helpful, well informed, and useful for any number of jobs. Very pleased to have you on my subscription list!
Thanks from Pakistan... you are a good teacher.... I bought a7sii with 16-35 f/4... but unable to record even a single clip properly.... even watched all your videos.... now on adobe premier cc 2020, its hard to color the clip
Another great video with clear explanations. Looking at the other video on your favorite pic profile I really think you might consider Andrew Reid's flat profile (which, alas, uses high the high ISO) and his package of LUTs for Log grading--I worked with scores of LUTs when I shot Sony as my main video tool, but I never found LUTs as good as Andrew's---and they really get you into a real authentic Canon look. Just a suggestion.
+William Ridenour thanks William! I've heard good things about Andrew's latest Sony color picture profile too, but haven't had a chance to test it out yet. Thanks for the tips!
If you get a chance let me know how you like it. I'm a Canon shooter and love Canon color....and so does Reid. I find his judgment to be very sound, and configuring his two profiles (one flat, the other for an out of the camera look that requires no grading---and his LUT package) I find they are really beautiful--and I don't miss the image and color of the 1DXii. That's especially exciting for me because I love the full frame look of the A7sII, and its low-light performance gives me confidence I can take this cam into almost any place and come out with at least usable footage. Awesome. And by the way, I don't know if you've ever done this, but I've put my Rokinon 35mm 1.5 cinema lens, with the clickless aperture, on the Sony, and manually focused it, and the results with the 3 way stabilization is really beautiful. The seamless exposure control and fluid fine focus and lightening fast aperture control make this, in my view, an outstanding wedding tool. Plus, they're lighter than the full frame lenses from Canon, Sony, etc.
I know I'm 4 years late but thank you for these. I am not professional and casually uses the church camera(lumix g7) and hopefully I'd be better through time...the only way i learn now was through youtube.
For another great color grading resource look for alexis van hurkman: color grading handbook. That man'a another legend in the color grading business and essentially wrote the manual to BMD's DaVinci Resolve. Yet nice video, even though I kinda missed the difference between lift/shadows gamma/midtones etc. cheers and keep uploading :)
Just watched two of your colorgrading videos. I love the way you talk and explain everything! Have to subscribe your channel. Great job Matt! PS: Nice mustache!
Excellent video as always. A lot of color grading videos are just full of people trying to push their LUTs. This is great, I use FCPx and I still learned a lot. Off topic but I am looking to add a third mic to my arsenal, I took your advice from another video and bought the DR-10L mic and want a third that is small and I can strap to the speakers mic inside a sleeve or Velcro. Do you have any recommendations? I love that the DR-10L’s record two different levels, if the third mic does too that would be awesome! Thanks in advance.
Great lesson like always times Matt! If you want to warm your meddle tones, remember to use your beard to adjust the right level of yellow in your image and, thats it! Warm and soft clips for you XD !
thats the best explanation on colour grading on the whole of youtube! thanks it helped a lot. i'll be applying these tips on my coming videos
Haha thank you!
I agree with you.
Hi Matt,
I have been using photoshop for the past ten years and I have no idea about what I am doing, my progress had been really slow since nobody is willing share the essentials. Your video taught me a lot within minutes. I am very grateful.
Please keep up the good work! God bless.
+Fi Vigilans so glad I was able to help you out! :)
Just switched to the A7Sii from Nikon and I've been watching your videos all day, learning. You are super helpful and explain things well. And i appreciate your sarcasm. Subscribed.
+Kenan Convey thanks Kenan!
good lord your footage is amazing and color grading explanation is top notch. wish you do many more of these in the future.
Thank you! Glad it helped!
Man you always set such a happy vibe to your videos. Enjoyed watching it and good info.
+DanielMVideo Haha thanks! For the flatter profiles, I like to use the Gamma Display Assist to get an (oversaturated) preview of what the white balance will look like. I use it if I'm ever unsure of how the white balance is looking.
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson oh duh! Great feature of the a7s II and a6300. I even have it as a custom button. Have you had a chance to try out the a6300?
+DanielMVideo not yet but I plan on renting one soon.

Thanks bro!
Awesome Aaron!
In case you’re wondering, my husband and I can both pick out your films because of your color grading! So that has now happened! 😉🤓
Wanna color grade using a LUT? Check this out! czcams.com/video/9FKEXCWeLy0/video.html
What's the font you use in your videos?
Futura :)
Couldn't thank you enough! Just got my a6300 last week and this is extremely informative. +1 again, Matt.
+Hayden G How are you liking the a6300 Hayden?
Coming from a t3i I couldn't be happier. I'm worried about having issues with overheating during the summer but it's still a huge upgrade! I do still hope to get an a7s ii in the future. Your videos have really helped me transition.
+Hayden G oh man! Definitely a jump in quality there. I'm planning on renting one soon.
I'd love to hear what you think! I'm just excited I can finally shoot in lower light. I would've never been able to shoot what I did in a recent video I uploaded. My t3i would've failed miserably.
awesome video bro! probs one of the only people on the tubes that actually goes into this kind of detail!
Haha thank you! :)
cool thanks for showing the basic steps to get started, and the subtle reasoning of choices, copy pasting effects and work flow.
+pixelmasque thank you! 😊
This was awesome! Thank you so much! I just bought a Sony a7iii and just booked for 9 weddings this year after doing 3 weddings last year, so I'm definitely taking notes and getting into color grading. Onto that color calibration tool. Thanks Matt! You're awesome.

Thanks Andrew! So glad it helped you out!
I really enjoy ur video tutorials but now it made me more happy that we both share the same faith!
You're awesome Mat. This so great for learning color grading other than jumping to using LUTs
Thanks Russel! Glad it helped you!
I've been trying to find a good color grading video for the longest and the information you shared was certainly the clearest, simplest, and best THANKS!
thanks Trenton!

I'm so incredibly thankful that you posted this video. I'm just starting out when it comes to video and this helped so much. I will be watching every one of your videos very soon. Marathon time!
Thanks Nick!
it's pretty the same as with a flat color profile with contrast and sat set down. why do people say slog is extremely hard to grade?
I KNEW there was something different about you. I KNEW it. Watched your A7Sii (part 1-4) tutorial and I knew that you seemed different... and it's because you are a follower of Jesus like myself!!! Much respect, dude!
Did not know you were based in Texas or a believer. I have even more respect for you. ✊🏻 Keep up the work! Oh and thanks for the tips.
Same here! would love to join your Bible study group ;)
thanks for making this video.. First time in my life I understood how to use those wheels and curves !! THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤️❤️
I appreciate this so much just putting out this basic color grading. I now understand why my videos are so dark with horrible contrast lol. You're welcome Colin! :D
Great Video Matt!!! simple and fun, the best way to introduce to color grading.
+Francisco Javier Jurado Hernandez thanks Francisco!

This is the most valuable video I’ve ever found on color grading
Hi Matt!, I really appreciate a lot of work and effort you put in your videos and share. I found your color grading/ correction really stand out as you don't overdo things like some other. +Josh Landis glad that it works for FCPX too!
Subscribed to your channel yesterday and been watching a lot of your videos. Super insightful and I’ve already learned a ton. Keep it up my dude, looking forward to more
interesting, as an audio engineer there are so many parallels between color grading and audio mixing. Thank you for this video
Thanks Zachary! Totally true. There are highs, mids, lows, and incredible stress associated with all of them working together in harmony. :P
Such a helpful video, thank you! You're very easy to listen and convey the information in a simple and effective way.
I have some Dude giving Matt a hard time with “ one cell dude comment” comments .... and moving forward ....Matt ... you are good and I thank you as I learn from you
I want to get my experience with the software sorted before I get involved in the higher stuff... Walk before Run.

Great tutorial Matt! Thank you. Looking fwd to your LUT's segment.
+13 Stops Pocket Films thanks, it's coming soon!
Awesome! :)

Thank you Matt. Great video
Thanks Bobby! :)
Amazing! Thank you so much for that. Very clear, thorough explanation, and you seem like an awesome dude!
+Breakside thanks so much!
I got so much out of this ! Thanks so much for your time appreciate you mate
+Daniel Irvine thanks Daniel!
thanks for the video. I really liked the close ups of couple and groom, but the wide shots was tooo red as for me=\
+Елизавета Постол thanks! Totally alright, that's the joy of color grading, you can adjust the colors to whatever you would like. :)
Your videos are simply amazing, thanks man
Thank you!
looking forward to the next one... LUTs!!!!
+Khoa Nguyen Yessir!
Love Alexis! He's great!

Matt, you're awesome. Thanks so much for your videos.
Thanks Taylor!
Great tutorial. I learned a bunch... thank you!
Thanks Jamey!
I needed this lesson. Thank you!
Great video! Very helpful and inspiring!
+Jonathan Abramovich thanks Jonathan
Great lesson like always times Matt! If you want to warm your meddle tones, remember to use your beard to adjust the right level of yellow in your image and, thats it! Warm and soft clips for you XD !
Im really loving your content! you really deserve a lot more subs
great video! just one question: how do you expose in PP4? do you go neutral or do you overexpose like in Slog profile?
thanks Antonio! I try to overexpose a bit. My meter usually says .3 or .7.
You''re awesome Matt, I love watching your videos. This one is a beauty. God bless champion! Enzo
+Enzo Maisano thanks Enzo!
