She is quoted as saying she grew up thinking that English was for speaking and Spanish was for singing. She could speak very minimal Spanish and learned this album mostly phonetically. This is still the best selling non-English language album in US history and her versions are now considered the standard of how Mariachi should be sung.

From what I understand, in vocal terms Mariachi is serious heavy lifting, even more so maybe than opera. It's not just something you just walk up and do, it's very disciplined and taxing, and you either have the talent and ability or you don't. This is why Linda is high grandmaster GOAT class beyond even many of the best known singers out there. She's practically in a class by herself.

From the album “Canciones de Mi Padre’ the biggest selling non-English language album in American record history. “These canciones were a big part of Ronstadt's family tradition and musical roots. The title Canciones de Mi Padre refers to a booklet that the University of Arizona published in 1946 for Ronstadt's deceased aunt, Luisa Espinel, who had been an international singer in the 1920s. The songs come from Sonora and Ronstadt included her favorites on the album. Also, Ronstadt has credited the late Mexican singer Lola Beltrán as an influence in her own singing style, and she recalls how a frequent guest to the Ronstadt home, Eduardo "Lalo" Guerrero, father of Chicano music, would often serenade her as child with these songs.”- wIKi

She worked very hard to learn this music to a professional level as an adult after having heard much of it as a child. Hi Britt. You and Linda are a winning combination. Everyone who saw you be introduced to Linda through her Trio harmonies knew you wouldn’t be able to know how her solo singing could not take a backseat to anyone.
She does have Mexican heritage on her father’s side and grew up with such music in her Arizona home, but is not known to speak Spanish conversationally. She has commented that as a child she thought English was used for talking, while Spanish was some magical language used for singing. The album from which this came was a tribute to her father and that heritage, and was a great success despite her record label’s reservations. But despite not being fluent, anyone who does know Spanish will tell you that her pronunciation and knowledge of what she’s singing about are first rate. And the song is about what was written at the beginning, and consistent with this very emotional style, where our heroine has so tired of searching for love that she is now content to simply die singing as do the cicadas. So great reaction and you’ll never be disappointed with Linda who always puts everything into whatever she does.

Thanks for the wonderful reaction to “La Cigarra.” Her best singing voice was during her two Mexican song albums, Canciones de Mi Padre & Mas Canciones.
Her pronunciation in Spanish is perfect as is, her interpretation of each & every song. I believe she was too shy to speak in Spanish but that shyness went away, with what came naturally to her, SINGING!
I look forward to Rod Stewart’s, “You’re in my Heart,” reaction.
Btw, I listen to music in many different languages that I don’t understand. For me, it’s about the song itself ( good melody) & the singer’s voice. If those two criteria are there, I don’t mind too much, that I can’t understand it.

When you were introduced to her via The Trio, I thought to myself, wait until she hears her sing in Spanish! Linda Ronstadt has released 24 studio albums and 15 compilation or greatest hits albums. She charted 38 US Billboard Hot 100 singles. Twenty-one of those singles reached the top 40, ten reached the top 10, and one reached number one ("You're No Good").
She was raised in Tuscon, Arizona, where she worked and sang with her Father who loved Latin music.
She said she spoke English and sang in Spanish.

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock & even opera. She has Mexican heritage on her dad's side. Growing up she listened to many types of music, including Mexican music, which was sung by her entire family. She does a great job singing in Spanish. I have the album "Canciones de Mi Padre (Spanish for "Songs of My Father"). Sadly she now has progressive supranuclear palsy & can no longer sing a note.

    English translation:
Don’t sing to me anymore, cicada
    Let your singsong end
For your song here in my soul
    Stabs me like a dagger
    Knowing that when you sing
You are announcing that you are going to your death.
    Sailor, sailor
Tell me if it is true that you know,
    Because I cannot distinguish,
Whether in the depths of the seas
    There is another color blacker
Than the color of my sorrows.
    A little dove came flying
    That bore a wounded breast
    Now almost crying
    Said to me very afflicted
Now I am weary of searching for
    A mutual love.
Under the shade of a tree
And to the beat of my guitar
    I sing this huapango joyfully
    Because my life is finished
And I want to die singing
    As the cicada dies.

I was fortunate to be able to see this concert 3 times in 3 different venues over a 2 year period. I played this CD multiple times a day for years. Not exaggerating! Learned to sing several of these songs phonetically myself. Was even lucky enough to sing one of them at friend's wedding reception with a Mariachi band. A most treasured memory! Linda does not speak or understand Spanish, per sey. She sings phonetically. She had an aunt who was a pretty successful singer of Mexican music. Her father, her brothers & at least one of her nieces (Mindy, who sing's "Y Andale" in this concert with her) can all sing. Very talented family.
Linda, wherever you are right now, thank you so much for ALL of the beautiful, heart wrenching and joyful songs you sang to us. You are one of the great story tellers of all time. Some people can have great voices but not be able to bring life to a song. You had both abilities. Muchas Gracias❤

This was a beautiful reaction by an extraordinary talent. I had voice lessons while attending University, and I know the difficulty pronouncing a non-speaking language that's unfamiliar, e.g.Italian. Linda was an acclaimed rock singer in her debut years, but as she progressed, her singing talent became much more obvious. Recently I got hurt at work, damaging my hands, and the loss of playing my guitar gave me great depredation. But Imagine her situation, though, the recollection of all she'd been through before that terrible disease silenced her singing. But ever hopeful, I will look for Linda in the next eternal life, happily in Heaven!

I was born in Ohio, but I've been in Tucson, AZ for 9 years now. After all this time I still love diving into how historical this part of the country was and still is. Linda is still alive and shows up at events from time to time, bit now always relating to music. her most recent event appearance in town i know of was her speaking at a sort of book fair/youth literacy event.
My favorite ways which the city has honored her is that they named the downtown public transit center the Rondstadt because once upon a time her families general store from back in the day was there. Not only that, but just down the road is a music hall basicallybehind the cities convention center that was renamed Linda Rondstadt Music hall. Recently to my knowledge, modern female rock icons such as Dorthy and Halestorm (Lzzy Hale; Lead singer/lead guitar) have preformed there.
I just had to re-research to make sure I had things straight, but her Great-Great Grandfather immigrated from Germany to Mexico in the 1850's. It was his son that moved the family to Tucson in 1822. Bare in mind that Arizona became a State in 1912, while Tucson became a city in 1775.
But, yeah-- Pretty much anything you're interested in, I've fund that Southern Arizona has a wild ass story for it. Have fun researching!

Linda is Mexican-American from the borderlands of Sonora and I think both Texas or Arizona or New Mexico, I don't remember that history with her. This is music especially composed arranged and sung strictly by women. I'm 70 years old I grew up on this music. I am so glad that you found the music and you enjoy it so much. The style is strictly Mexican and usually accompanies a rodeo where women compete along with the men on the ranches in Mexico and South Texas.

All the songs were transcribed phonetically for her to learn. Growing up her family sang in Spanish but talked in English and grew up on her paternal grandfather's hacienda in Tucson, AZ.. At elementary school the students would be punished for speaking Spanish but as a young girl she thought everyone spoke English but sang Spanish.. This song is from "Cancoines de me Padre" which sold over 2.5 million copies within 24 hours from release, and holds the record of still being the highest selling non-English record. She was strongly discouraged by her record label from doing this album as they told her she would destroy her career.
