      @@RevereOverland Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. My AGM starter battery is great and, with the aid of my solar, has powered the fridge for several days no problem, but it definitely feels like it's pushing the limits. I like that the REDARC systems can handle different types of batteries.

    I installed a Redarc BCDC1240D in my trailer, and it’s performed flawlessly for a couple of years now. There’s a reason it’s the Australian de facto standard for off-road vehicles. A bit expensive, but well worth it.

    I was in need of a dual battery and have been looking at the portable ones like Jackery, but I have found that it didn't have all the inputs that I needed and was limited to whatever that portable power station came with.
    I then looked at more of the $75 route, but did find that I could run into a lot of issues like you stated.
    I then came across the Redarc BCDC 1225D.
    This unit has made my life so much easier because I was able to customize my own setup specific to my vehicle and I can add more inputs in the future if needed.

      That’s the great thing about such a modular system. I like the battery packs still, but my biggest issue is how slow they charge. The BCDC1225D is over 6 times faster at charging than a Jackery 240.

      Maybe, maybe not. Lol. I like his videos, but in my opinion you’re better off not doing a “$75” setup. Of course it’s just an opinion, so anyone is welcome to disagree!

      @@RevereOverland I like that overland bound did cover well how to do it safely and did address some of the pitfalls. He did say it wasn't perfect and was not the preferred method. I think it was to broaden their content and answer the people who were always going to ask for the budget option. That being said, their position has often been to buy once and cry once so the $75 option is slightly out if character for them.

    Your advice has steered me away from systems like the genesis dual battery system. Like you said, I think it’s cheaper to get an AGM battery, a battery box, and the redarc (along with some circuit breakers and cables). I won’t have to worry about hurting the aux battery or having to buy a new starter battery before I need one. Thanks for the help!

    What if you engine provides max 9 amp??is there a chance you damage the alternator/ stator?

    Hi like your videos and find them very informative but in my opinion Redarc stuff is good but over priced. Also I run a lead acid starter battery and AGM deep cycle in the rear to run a fridge via a cheap battery isolator I know it’s not the best option but I have never had an issue, same battery has been in the vehicle for 6 years. As for Lithium vehicle batteries they are brilliant, I’m not sure where you are but here in Australia a half decent 100amp/hr battery is around $1,000- $1,600 with a 3 -5yr warranty so I would like to know what a battery with 12 yrs warranty is worth. Anyway keep up the good work.

    Okay I got through watching your video a lot of misunderstanding between a lot of people. So can you clear this up if it's two different types of batteries the relay supposed to just regulate how much power and then cut off or on what does that have to do with what type of battery I bought these isolators just for one purpose to turn off the battery when the battery is, and do turn it on when the battery is full can you give me some more information on how this damage is the battery.

    I have the Renogy DC to DC charger on my DIY overland trailer. It works very well. I ran #4 cable from the jeeps battery to a plug at the rear, then a cable going to the charger. I also have a 100w portable solar panel and finally I added a NOCO Genesis charger for shore power. It runs the refrigerator and charging ports. I'm anxious to try an electric blanket. Just bought an 04 class B and want to add batteries to it.
    I'll be researching your recommendations. Thank you.

      @@RevereOverland Amazon has the Amperetime brand. 100Ah LiFePo4 . It does not have a low temp cut out however, the Renogy does have one. I taped it to the side and put 1½ foam insulation around the battery.

      Just remember Rob is talking anout Lithium, but Lithium Iron Phosphate...significantly different than Lithium Ion...

    Been running a Renogy dctodc charger with a 100w fixed solar panel on the roof. A 100ah gel battery. Ive found that even with my wife and I taking showers, running (usb) fans all night. We hardly go below 90% charge overnight. When its cold wee use electric blankets that bring us down to 80% capacity. Still the charger is able to top most if not all it up with about 5-6hrs of engine run time. Depending on how long this battery lasts will determine if I go lithium next time or not.

      Sounds as though AGM is working out great for you! I use a ton of power with all the drone batteries, so lithium made sense for me!

    I never tried the " 75$ " setup, although I have been piecing together a dual batt setup for my 2nd gen 4runner. Standard acid under the hood and a 100 ah agm in the back with 100w solar panel on the roof. It's not bad, but I thought it could be better, so I picked up a renogy dc to dc charger, as of yet uninstalled. The agm I got for free from work, and everything is renogy. (MPPT Charge controller, 100 watt fixed panel and a 100 watt suitcase ) I've been toying with cutting my losses and just going with one of those fancy dancy jackery or bluetti solar generators and have yet to bite. Then maybe the option of just the lithium battery. I'm interested in your comparisons.

      Sounds like you have a good setup, go with it! The Jackery/Bluetti stuff is nice, but charges super slow. You’ll never have to worry about plugging up a dual battery either!

    Have you seen the video from Wanderlost Overland? They did a temperature test with the Lithium battery you showed, they shared their results with the manufacturer. After the their tests the manufacturer wrote them a letter stating that the under the hood use of their battery was not safe because of the high temps and there was a real risk of fire.

      I did! It doesn’t surprise me. Lithium batteries really are best used inside the vehicle for both heat and cold protection!

      The real problem with a quality LifeP04 under the hood (manufacturer doesnt reccomend) is not fire or explosion. LifeP04 is very safe. The Battleborn has a high temp cutout. Under The hood gets really hotel. What good is a sunstantial battery under The hood of it wo t charge due to high temp cut out. This is by design.

    So I went to a shop to get some help with my set up. I originally was thinking American Adventure lab with 100ah LiFePO battery, but I plan to sleep in my vehicle, so the techs recommended the genesis system to keep fumes out of the vehicle for safety…that check out?

      Find a different shop. There are no fumes from charging lithium!

    I’m sitting here with almost zero knowledge of electronics…bought a high school course just to understand terms….bought a 1993 GMC Vandura ….have no one to help me find things and get things in order. I want to get a new engine battery, it’s a couple years old, then see how to manage the house stuff.

    I've heard this several times recently, and I don't understand: why do people think AGMs only last a few years? My oldest still in daily use is a 12-year-old Optima Red Top.

      It really depends on how you use it and how deep you discharge it when you use it. If you barely use them then they can last forever. On the other hand, if you’re constantly taking them down to 50%, they’re only going to last a few years. Whatever you’re getting out of an AGM, you’re going to get 3-4 times the life on a LiFePO4.

    The drawback to lifepo4 battery is it doesn't like extreme hot 120f + or cold 32f-. Both can cause damage, too hot can cause fire. This is important information for viewers interested in dual.

      Absolutely! I just didn’t want to get into all of the details of battery chemistries since I already have that in another video! You definitely don’t want to install LiFePO4 under the hood. They are usable in the cold, just not chargeable. They do make heaters for them though, and Battle Born even has ones with heaters built in.

    I’ve been doing vehicle electronics for over 25 years. You do not have to have the exact same battery when using a solenoid. This claims “sponsored by redarc”.

      Exact same charging profile… which ultimately means replacing the starter.

      I agree with you, how many are providing ventilation for batteries in passenger compartment? All batteries gas! some more than others and some just straight catch on fire. I will stick with my dual battery system which includes Insterstate AGM group 24 batteries and a 17.00 solenoid. Total cost under 400.00 maybe 450.00 with 4gauge wire... not this wimpy 8 or 10 gauge crap...
